Hello all, I bought a used PC yesterday to work as my first home server. I did updates here and there (and pulled my hair out because networking stuff is SOOO much fun) and in the end I sorta have it set up. One of the problems I have now is that I was trying to rename the mapped drive from the remote computer and while it let me delete the letters, it won't let me type new ones in. Is there a reason for that? Did I change something to make it not work right? Thanks, Jacob

Alright so my current pc has 1TB Western Digital Blue Drive. I found a 3TB Red Western Digital Drive lying around in my house. i know that red is for NES servers but i read its basically just a blue drive with NES support and optimization so i've decided to use it as my new main drive. im looking to move everything like my OS and all my steam games to this new drive. i have both drives plugged into my pc throught SATA DATA and SATA power cables. i would like to know the best software for copying EVERYTHING from my main drive to this knew one without any change to my pc itself and no problems. tried to find this on youtube but too many different results. i know i can trust linus media group and their community so someone help me.

Hey guys, I have a Dell Inspiron 5577 Gaming laptop (i5 7300HQ, 8gb ddr4 2600mhz Ram, GTX1050 4gb) and I ran out of storage on my main Sata drive (WD Blue 256gb SSD) and my laptop has a nvme enabled m.2 slot, so I have 200$ US and I want to buy a new drive, so my question is, do I get a 500gb WD Black NVMe drive or a slower 1Tb WD Blue (Sata Speeds) for the same price??? and will my pc support it??? plz help

Hi! What is the smallest motherboard that has support for 5 NVMe drives? I know that for example the Gigabyte GA-Z170X-SOC FORCE board supports 3 NVMe drives. I also know that there are solutions like the ASUS HYPER M.2 X16 CARD that gives your motherboard 4 NVMe drives. But what is the smallest motherboard that can fit 5 (or more) NVMe drives? Thanks!

I've recently ordered a pretty fast system for around $8000 with a Samsung Pro SSD with Windows 10 installed (had Windows 7 on my old computer). I also have a 10TB internal drive and three 6TB in a RAID0 for performance. Now, all those drives checks out and are fast, but I have around a petabyte of external drives, most of them with USB3. When I plug one in to transfer back some of the files from my old system, the transfer is suuuuuuper slow, not even a little, it's down to 6 kbit/s. Sometimes it pops up and transfers at 70mbit/s, but then it drops down to a halt before continuing at around 6kbit/s. When I explore the drive, going through files, sometimes the explorer window totally freezes up when opening a folder and after 20-30 seconds or so, it opens that folder. This inconsistency is seriously not normal. The motherboard is a Asus Sage X299, so it shouldn't be the problem. I checked to optimze external drives instead of safe eject but that didn't help either. It was not like this on Windows 7 with these drives, so what is it that causes this problem? It has something to do how with Windows 10 handles external drives since it worked before.

What does this mean: Intel Optane memory can only accelerate SATA-based drives (SSD, SSHD, HDD). You can use it with 2.5", 3.5", or M.2 form factor drives as long as they're connected with chipset lanes. I have no idea what it means when it says it has to be connected to chipset lanes... https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000023994/memory-and-storage/intel-optane-memory.html

I have unraid 6.4 with the most recent version of unassigned devices. I added a WD 1tb purple drive that I want to have shared but not part of the array. I installed the drive and it does display in the unassigned devices menu and is formatted to ntfs and i have enable auto-mount and share but I can still not see the share when I navigate to the tower on another computer. Is there something that I missed? I watch a video after messing with it for a while and they were able to do the exact same thing and have the drive show up on the network. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Cause of the windows 10 creators update, I have to downgrade windows off my USB, but then I'll have to format my secondary HDD full of games, anyway to bypass that?

Hello I am having a bit of a dilemma as I am looking to get a NAS drive for my home. This is mostly for me as I would like to back up and store videos and photos that I take as a hobby but I would also like this to be a shared drive for my family where anyone can add a file to this shared drive that anyone can access as well as every single one of us having our own space within the NAS to add to whenever we want. there is a mixture of MAC and PC users so it would need to be able to work on both. I am pretty computer literate this is just a topic that I am not very familiar with so I would like some advice on this. thank you in advance for any ideas and suggestion that any of you may have.

Hey, my think my windows made a new partition after i updated to the new update (1803). So far that's not a problem you might think. BUT the new partition just has 449mb... and has about 409mb used so windows can kill my damn nerves with DAMN NOTIFICATIONS that my drive is nearly full. Ok... so how do i delete the extra partition and should i even do that? This is getting out of control... why does it need another partition?!?!?! (yes.. i'm salty) Edit: I can't even delete it by right clicking it... when i really should not/can't delete it... what can i do against the damn notifications? (And no, i wont turn down the volume. That's just not how it works)

Tier 1 -WD Gold Enterprise (Used in NAS devices) -WD VelociRaptor (Built for gaming, not commonly used due to it's small capacity) -Seagate IronWolf NAS (Can be used for storing games and files if you don't own a NAS but require a large amount of storage, could receive long warranty due to the fact that these hold a large amount of data) -Toshiba X300 (Good drive, bad warranty) -WD Black (Receive your best performance in games for a decent price, recommend for a high budget build) -Seagate Barracuda Pro (On the same scale as the IronWolf but with longer warranty, a little more pricier) -WD Red (A reliable drive, but only runs at 5400RPM unless you upgrade to the Red Pro or IronWolf) -WD Red Pro (Good overall performance, optimized for a NAS, Top-end capacity could be higher) Tier 2 -Seagate Firecuda Desktop/Mobile (Includes SSD NAND Flash for faster speeds, not recommended if you tend to do a lot of writing with the drive) -WD Blue Desktop (A good reliable drive that has been used for many years, recommended when sticking to a budget) -Seagate Barracuda (A good reliable drive that has been used for many years, recommended when sticking to a budget) -Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000 (Good drive, could improve on power consumption and warranty) -WD Mainstream (Basically a re-branded WD Blue but with RPMs that vary) -Seagate Constellation ES.2 (Long warranty with a high capacity, weak performance of the 3TB Constellation ES.2 SAS drive) -Toshiba P300 (Good drive, not much else to say) Tier 3 -WD RE3 (Mainly a enterprise drive, but it's good in consumer devices. Has had issues with read/write speeds) -Hitachi Deskstar 7K2000 (Decent performace for a good value, not as fast as some competition) _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ What to look for in buying a Hard Drive: - Review the item before buying it instantly - Pricing is a big factor in this, make sure you don't overpay, ask a forum community for information - Try to buy a drive over 1TB storage if you plan to use this for large files and games. (Games range anywhere from 2GB to 100GB Average, so you would want to make sure you will have a large drive for your games) - Don't buy used! You never know if the drive has been dropped, damaged, worn out. Drives are cheap at your nearest computer store most of the time - Keep your receipts if your drive is defective (People like to throw out there receipts before they get home and test it, ends up being fried) - Don't leave consumer drives or your computer on 24/7 if you aren't using it for any specific purposes, your drive hours will decrease and it will be a waste) - Consider if you want to buy a large capacity Solid State Drive or Hard Disk Drive. Some people have it in there budget. - Be aware of the type of interface, whether it's 3.5" or 2.5". You will mainly see 5.25" for DVD/CD Drives or Add-ons for the front of your PC. - Don't buy a External Hard Disk Drive, these aren't meant to game of them, and you will more then likely experience stuttering because you are running this through a USB, and are more so for accessing files on the go.

I'm Australian. I'm not sure if that matters, but before people start talking about US/Canada all in one solutions, it's impossible to freight something for cheap. I've tried searching the forum, and and I can't seem to find a comprehensive answer to a question I only just realized I need to ask before buying a home server. I'm looking at picking up on Ebay an old 16Bay rack mount NAS server. It's internals are unimportant for now because they are all up-gradable and I haven't bought anything yet, I've just been looking for a case on the cheap for a while, but I'll list them for the sake of something to work with: ASUS Z8NA-D6C Xeon E5620 x2 24GB ECC RAM 10GbE Now, my question is in regards to drive maintenance, and adding drives to the pool after initial setup. Everyone seems to be in agreement that you cannot add more drives to a FreeNAS pool, except when you can in a specific way. *Confused face* My plan is to use the server to stream TV, Movies and music to the rest of my house. My current setup: 2011 MacMini 500GB HDD via Sata - OS 1TB HDD via USB2 - Music Storage 3TB HDD via Thunderbolt - Burstcoin 4TB HDD via Thunderbolt - Burstcoin 4TB HDD via Thunderbolt - Downloading drive and TV Show overflow 4TB HDD via Thunderbolt - Movie Storage 8TB HDD via USB3 - TV Show Storage Sonarr for TV Shows Safari for everything else PIA for VPN Plex for streaming I'd like my new system to emulate the same functionality that I've been working with since 2016, as this system just works. I would like to, however, enhance the capabilities somewhat. I have no backups. I don't have any more hdds, and if i did I have no more ports to use *facepalm* My biggest concern moving into the NAS arena, is expandability. I'm obviously not going to go out and buy 16 brand new 12TB drives just so I can have the best system from the start. I want to have something serviceable with little upfront cost, and expand as my needs do. My initial purchase will most likely include 2x8TB drives, but I might be able to get 4x4TB for a cheaper per TB price, so that's not set in stone. Then once I have something set up and move all my current data onto the server, I think I plan on cannibalizing the rest of the HDDs in my house for extra space "for now" with a big plan to replace all repurposed drives, but don't know how that is exactly going to work. All I want is a server that has enough redundancy that if I pull out 1 drive, I can replace it without loosing all the data. A system I can add a drive to, two to three times a year without requiring I obtain just as many TB of external HDDs to backup all my data too. Something like this https://community.spiceworks.com/how_to/919-expand-a-raid-volume sounds right up my alley, but this is talking about Windows 2003 Server. Is this possible on FreeNAS? I'm new here, be gentle if this is in detail somewhere on the forum.

So I'm running out of room on my 1TB hard drive and I wish to move all the data from that drive to a new 4TB drive. The data that is on the 1TB drive I want to move is mostly just steam games and saves along with other programs. My OS is on a different drive so I won't be moving that. Would I be able to copy and paste from the 1TB to the new drive or is there a different way of transferring without corrupting data? Thank you. Please only respond if you know what you're talking about.

How would I go about putting 2 usb drives into a raid configuration? I know it's dumb and there's no point to doing it but I wanted to try it anyway.

Hi there, I have a small question. I am running a FreeNAS box for storage and server applications (Plex, Vpn, ...) it has an i5-2400, a µATX mobo, a 8 port hba, a 2 port nic, a 3x5.25" to 4x3.5" hdd adapter and most importantly 10 hdds. All of this is currentyl housed inside a horrible CoolerMaster k380 which could hardly be less suited. So with Christmas just around the corner I was thinking about upgrading. The question is now wether to go for a rackmount case like this or this one whithout rachmounting it or a large tower case like the Nanoxia Deep Silence 1 Rev. B. Thank you for your thoughts and opinions in advance.

Hi Folks, Okay, so I have been Googling all day, got a hold of M$ and they want $450 to help cause it Server 16. I am a student, and got a legit copy of Server 2016 Database. Great right? SO I build a brand new PC for the first time. After a few false starts this mornign, I got the PC together, and have a BIOS. Now the problems; Apparently, the OS install can't see the drives. A SSD and a HDD. So, I find somewhere it says, don't hook them together the first time, install the OS first on the want you want. So, did that. Didn't work. Checked all the connections. All good. Someone said the drives need to be formated for the first time. Okay, makes sense. But, all the tutorials are for exsisting systmes with a GUI. I can't get to that point. So, new build, drives not showing up in BIOS, can't install OS without drives. Here is my setup; Prodigy M case Asus Prime B250M-C mobo Pentium G4400 PNY Anarchy 2400 16GB RAM Aigo 240 water cooler EVGA 450 power supply & a Western Digital 1TB Green 7200 HHD (for files) a Western Digital 120GB Green SSD (for OS) My guess is that I need to format the drives somehow. Fine, makes sense. How do I access them on a brand new build. Thanks for any incoming help Happy Thanksgiving

I recently upgraded my mother board and cpu cooler got all back to get working when all but my ? drive vanished from windows explorer. They all still appear in Bios. After formatting them and loading them back up with games the same thing has happened, I have done virus scans and malware, checked the connections, gone to the 3rd page of a google search and I can't find any clue as to why this happens. My ? drive is the only one that doesn't get this problem. Yet. Okay, here a pretty simple enough but complicated question, but q quick history first. I have Three Separate storage disks, one SSD and HDD that came with the computer when i bough it, and a third HDD i added to increase disk space. Now the SSD is only 128GB capacity and thats where windows is installed on, but thats not the drive in question. My E: disk (because D: is DVD - drive) is where i keep games files and other important files and then my F: is just a dumb for files. I wanna clone some (not all) of the contents on my on E: drive, mainly programmes and videogames and my steam directory to the RAID SSD setup i am planing on getting that will be Striped, (because I am planning on purchasing two 512GB or 1TB (or somewhere between)). is there a way i clone the HDD to an SSD RAID without windows completely losing its shit? I wanna keep the directory as is, all the files being where they are right, just on a RAID.

I've attached pictures of my raid controller bios, device manager, computer management, and my computer, as well as a picture of the physical computer itself. Essentially the issue I am having is that the raid 10 set i configured is not showing up. All 4 drives are showing up in the raid controller bios and show no errors or conflicts. The controller itself shows up in device manager. All cables in the system are secure. All drivers are up to date. Windows is up to date. On rare occasions when starting the computer, the raid set appears fine and i can browse/move files around. It then disappears again after a few minutes and any programs that run off that crash immediately. Usually however, it does not show up at all. Help? Suggestions? Thanks in advance, Ken

Hi guys! I've been trying to transition to Linux from Windows, it's beens awesome so far but I've hit a snag. For some years now my go-to P2P software was QBittorrent, so naturally I wanted to use it as well in Linux, and here is where my problem starts. If I add a .torrent file the options window pops-up asking me where I want to save it, and the only drive that shows up is the OS drive.... I have 3 other drives, another SSD where I still have my Windows 7 installation, and two HDD's where I actualy store data (they are both NTFS). As you can see in this image, the other two drives show up (Main Storage and Storage), although in QBittorrent there's nothing Transmission does not have this problem, the drives show up properly. Is this a limitation of the Linux version of QBittorrent or is there something I'm doing wrong? Thank you in advance MoraisGT

I understand that SATA III is a standard, needs power and data and all and that there are respective cables for that, but how do I know which type of SATA III adapter or cables I need to get if I want to swap the storage drive in an Inspiron N5040 Core i3 laptop? I understand there are SATA power-and-data in one cables, SATA cables with more or fewer pins, etc. Thanks for the answers!
