Hello everyone, i need your help on some of my questions before i will lunch myself into this project. First of all im gonna build my self an external screen for work, it really helps me sometimes when i have a second screen to work on. The screen i recovered was from an old toshiba satellite L300-17L. And i found on ebay the controller board i have to buy for it to work: https://www.ebay.fr/itm/142913931883?hash=item2146558a6b:g:SwUAAOSwj~9bfi-M My work laptop is a Dell Latitude 5580. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My question: is there any way to power the screen from on of the USB ports with a cable like this one ( amazon link ) or will there be no enough power coming from the usb ports? I know i can get a DC plug to power the screen but my goal is to not carry another power adapter and i would like to have all cables connected to the llaptop for power and hdmi output. Thnx to everyone in advance

Wanted custom keyboard but could not afford it LOL!! OK ... truth be told we have an E-waste container and I was bored. Old broken IBM keyboard and cheap Bluetooth keyboard from AliExpress found in the E-waste. IBM keyboard gutted at cut in half, Bluetooth keyboard ripped out of the fake leather case it was in. Then all of the parts mashed together with superglue, double-sided tape, screws and paint. MOM!! can I have custom keyboard !! NO we have custom keyboard at home !! CUSTOM keyboard at home !!!

So I've been around the neighborhood in computers. I know little about firmware and bios flashing as well as how it all works. I've never seen any popular tech youtubers try and flash a new bios onto a corrupted one. Theoretically, the hardware should be fine, The bios chip should be fine. The software/firmware is the issue. Couldn't mobo manufacturers make a simplified removable bios chip like any other part and put it into a device and run simple commands? My understanding may not be correct on this so I'm just wanting to start a discussion about it as it interests me so.

Hey guys I might be moving into a van or camper semi full time. I was wondering if anyone here had experience with actual desktop setups in campers/vans. Is a Desktop PC even feasible for something like this? Or should I just be looking at a laptop for the efficiency it brings. I already have a desktop with a 3080, so if I could keep it that'd be great! Maybe something like a battery backup would be in order to smooth out the spikes. (Also I would be plugged into an external outlet while gaming) Any insight is appreciated ^^

Howdy LTT, I've recently been overhauling an old Razer BlackWidow keyboard as a side project. i got it all soldered up, but now it looks like its missing a PCB trace. im happy to grab whatever i can to repair this, but i dont know how or where to get started. id love any tips, thanks gang!

I've been looking for a new cordless soldering iron. I've had the same $30 Adafruit soldering iron for 3 or so years now, works great, but I'm sick of the cord. Hakko Soldering Irons are generally considered some of the best(from what I've seen based on the community) but they're corded and I'm looking for something a little less tethered. Here and there I have seen all sorts of cordless soldering irons whether they be rechargeable by usb-c or micro usb, but I'm unsure of the quality. There have been complaints about not reaching the specified temps the soldering irons claim or the batteries dying far too quickly. If anyone has any recommendations from personal experience, I'm all ears.

I just recently disassembled my Dell XPS 15 L502X and i disassembled the keyboard to make some use of it if i can. the question is what exactly do i have to do to convert into a usable state? Some help with this is appreciated
-
I have recently disassembled my Dell XPS 15 L502X and i have disconnected the display and keyboard for repurposing. Due to this the innards are exposed and i plan on repurposing it into a HTPC but i would prefer having it in an enclosure that would be soooo much easier to work in. But I am unaware of any such enclosure or even if one exists in the first place. The reason i dont want to use the current chassis is beacause the DC power connector is loose and i don't to disassmeble the damn thing everytime it doesn't turn on. also a corner chipped off and could be a direct pathway for debris and liquid so yeah. Any help with such an enclosure would be greatly appreciated. 1 option that have thought of and turns out be a thing is 3D printing. I don't own a 3D printer and probably never will but a quick google search shows there a3D printing firms that will do the job. heck i can even askthem to the measuring for me and shit. But i'd rather not have to resort to that unless there is such an enclosure or said enclosure is too expensive.

note to mods: if this doesn't belong here, please move it into the right place. I recently disassembled and salvaged what i could form my old Dell XPS 15 L502X (may it one day be of service again) now i remember watching this video where a guy disconnects a laptop display and turns it into a portable display. Well i have a disassembled display that could be put to good use, so why not? Now as far i have ascertained, i need 2 main things. 1. Display control/driver board= takes care of power and display ports 2. some kind of reinforcement- for this i plan on using what was formerly the cover of my laptop. now i am mainly having difficulty identifying which display control board is for my display and i would like some help knowing which one is for my display I also don't know what is the model number hence i cant identify which display board to get. Could someone tell me which is the model number from these pictures?

Budget (including currency): around $20 (for the LCD controller board) Country: US Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Second monitor, Portable Monitor, Retro Gaming, Pi-hole Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): sponsored(?) by micro center This is the cheapest project I've ever done with mostly recycle components and micro center's amazing deal of free coupons on Pi Zero W and micro sd card. And big shout out to DIY Perk for the guide on making second monitor out of recycled laptop. The detailed description on the parts and pictures can be found on the completed build at pc part picker: https://pcpartpicker.com/b/fwWbt6

Hi, I am new around here, so I hope this is the correct place for this type of post. I recently decided to go to an itx build, for portability reasons, and I want to build my own case, from 20x20 slot 6 aluminium extrusions, and some 3d printed parts from ABS. The tray of the motherboard will probably be made of sheet of aluminium. I will be upgrading to a Ryzen 5600X (stock cooler), 16gb ram, Asrock B550M-ITX/ac. I already have a GTX 1070 cooled with an 120mm AIO (Thermaltake), which complicates things a bit, and a CX550M semi-modular PSU. The layout I came up with is shown in the pictures. I am mostly concerned about the placement of the GPU radiator. Is the 28.8mm clearance from the back of the PSU enough? Should I rotate my PSU so that the intake is directly behind the radiator, or this would provide the PSU with too much hot air? The body at the back of the case is a possible place for an 3.5inch HDD. P.S. This is my first attempt at designing a case .

Hi guys, I just recently upgraded a pc specs: r9 5900x asus tuf x570 plus wifi geil ddr4 3600mhz c18 2x16gb samsung 950 pro 512 gb(from old pc) inno3d 1080 ti(from old pc) seasonic 850 plus titanium (from old pc) i updated the bios on the motherboard using a 3200g version 4010(beta)currently also tried downgrading to version 4002(stable) was able to enter desktop once using the 5900x but after restarting it won't show pics(black screen) but if i put the 3200g in it boots to desktop just fine i'm suspecting it's the processor but it's brand new when it boots it beeps once, then once and 3 beeps help is appreciated

Suppose you were to paint the wall behind a transparent TV or Monitor Vantablack (The paint that reflects nearly no light), do you think the picture quality would improve? And if you were to paint the back of a transparent TV would it look like a normal TV with very deep black levels? Or would it look terrible? I don't have the paint or the TV but I am curious.

What project have you all enjoyed doing most as a techie hobby? I've had a lot of fun helping friends/family build PCs and teaching them how to solder on a little radio kit. I'm thinking of getting into voice recording to do some pro-bono work reading some book chapters for Librox. Much love all. Cheers!

For reasons im asking the LTT forum of all places is I dont really think reddits forum for r/Simracing is gonna shed light on DIY projects like these and im hoping theres a few people who work with boards and have insight on how to do wiring or explain it in a way I can understand. for why im posting it in general discussion I dont see any other places that would catorgorize my questions properly Essentially for the button 1 to 16 im really confused on how to wire the buttons when buttons usually have a plus and minus like how pc boot up is where it needs a point of contact between metal to power it on but for this instance its sending a signal but then im really oddly confused since it seems like theres not gonna be any where its gonna get a signal to send to the pad because it doesnt have any power to tell if the button is working or not this is a really confusing post but if buttons only have 2 wires and one receives power and the button is the way to let the power through to the other wire to send a signal then this is oddly confusing because theres only 16 pads there labeled if you are wondering what im trying to do is that im trying to modify my logitech driving force pro and getting rid of the old logitech board and its motor since its weak and horrible in all honesty and the old logitech board would have not allowed me to do a reliable motor swap since the logitech power brick is not that big and it would need more voltage it couldnt handle to run a new motor so I opted to essentially diy a steering wheel inside a carcass of the logitech wheel and I want to keep using the rim while having the buttons on the rim to still work so id need to wire that which is a pain but its honestly cheaper than getting a brand new wheel especially in my economy with this option proving to be more efficient in terms of the results compared to brand new wheels like the g29 or the trueforce logitech wheel so im just confused on how to wire the buttons if the firmware im gonna be using to make this all work says that those specific pads are the ones to receive the buttons signal with no insight on where the buttons can get power to send a signal

I have some old phones that I would like to reuse instead of letting them dust to death or disposing them. Before you ask, giving them to relatives isn't really feasible as it would just be a downgrade for almost all of them (glares in jealousy) Not to mention most of these phones are laughably old or in bad condition so there's that as well. I'm going to describe the phones, their respective conditions and what could possibly be done with them though feel free to give your suggestions on what I should/could do with them. Do keep in mind that I'm on a very tight budget and I'm very hesitant to spend money on these phones unless it's abosu-fukin-lutely worth the investment. FYI, I'm on a Samsung Galaxy A50 so I can't really "upgrade". Additionally, as of now, I'm not really in the need of a secondary phone though maybe I could put a sim with unlimited data into one of these and use them as mobile hotspots? Is there a ROM that focuses on cutting down background processes so that I can maximize the bandwidth/antennas for hotspot use? Though this isn't really useful considering I'm not going anywhere in this lockdown to need a hotspot in the first place but hey its best to be prepared I s'pose. Or maybe i can salvage the parts and use them to make some other stuff? Your suggestions would be very much appreciated. Again as I'm a beginner to modding, custom ROMs, rooting and whatnot, I would definitely like some advice as this also gives me the oppurtunities to safely get into modding without the risk of damaging/bricking/f**king up my phone. Hence, your suggestions are welcome with open arms. 1. Samsung Galaxy A70 (2018) Condition: Dead screen Description: AFAIK the rest of the phone works fine just the screen has committed not living. This was mainly due to a shoddy screen replacement by an even shoddier repair shop (dude literally couldn't be arsed to glue the screen back fucking taped it) the reason was that the phone being out of warranty and the screen replacement from Samsung official was ~$USD 80 whereas Mr Shoddy did it for ~$USD 25 and threw in an admittedly decent case as well. (Just so we're clear this wasn't my decision my dad wouldn't listen). I'm willing to do it myself (would be a good experience for me) but the screen costs about ~$90 so yeah. Not really willing to fix a phone when for twice the price I could just get a new one that is far more superior. Use cases: Can't really think of any. Maybe a Pendrive? mini computer? Can the micro USB connector even output to a display? Would really like some advice on this one. 2. Nokia 1 Condition: Working as normal Description: Ah yes this ******** aka my first smartphone. I have no intention of giving this to anyone simply because I'm not sadistic enough nor do I know anyone masochistic enough to take it. It runs on Android 10 (Go edition) and has a mere pittance of 1GB RAM and 8GBs of Storage (oh god the flashbacks, it's all coming back to me. no pls no). needless to say, a 5 dollar USB stick has more storage and perhaps more performance as well. Battery life is non-existent and so is its ergonomics. True to Nokia's design philosophy this mf will not fucking die. The number of times I have dropped it and it just took it like a tank is amazing. if you're wondering how much I paid for this it was a whopping ~USD 40 used. A damn good deal for someone who had been stuck on feature phones until then. Use case: Security cam? there's an app on Google Play called Alfred (good name) that's made for this purpose and I'm gonna try it out. Maybe Install DroidCam and turn it into a webcam (albeit a crappy one though laptop webcams can't really speak for themselves) Video Doorbell? Could use some suggestions here as well. 3. Samsung Galaxy Note Edge Condition: Working (installed new battery) Description: Ooooooh boy time to travel back to 2014 the era of the unfathomable abomination that is the curved screen. This one I just got recently from my uncle [begin rant] who also has an S10+ in a cupboard but won't give it to me because it has his data on it. When I offered to transfer the data to his S21+ Ultra max storage variant he said "later" which = never [end rant]. It still has its S pen that doesn't work with any other phone or the clicky top that other S pens do. Not really sure what to do with this one. It's running Android 6.0/Marshmallow. Use Case: Since it's so old maybe I can use this as a testing/learning ground for flashing ROMs. <--This could also apply to the others. Drawing ....surface? (cant really call it a tablet now can I?) Again would like to hear your suggestions. Last but not least 4. Huawei Nova 3i Condition: Screen is halfway out Description: This was my dad's old phone and during his time using it, he had the bright idea of putting his phone in his back pocket and sitting on it. For 3-4 years, Every, Single, Day. One day he drops it and is surprised to find the phones screen halfway tryna make a run for it. So yea basically the phone's screen is halfway out and the buttons (both volume and lock) are f**ked and the screen has dead zones and other touchscreen related issues. Use Case: I cant think of much either. Maybe I can disassemble that finger print reader and somehow connect it to my laptop to make windows hello/finger print login possible? Probably not possible with the A70 since its reader is on the side, maybe the Note Edge? Though I would assume its fingerprint tech is inferior to the Huawei's due to the age gap. So to list out some of the universal use cases I can think of are: a) Put a sim with unlimited data and if possible flash a custom ROM that limits background/network processes/activity so that the phone's antennas can be maximized for hotspot usage. b) Disassemble and salvage parts like cameras, batteries and whatever can be reused. Perhaps can DIY them into something else? I'm not exactly sure c) Turn them into Security cams, I know there's an app called Alfred on Google Play that I will try out and see if and how well it works. d) Turn them into smart storage units? I'm thinking since some of them have large storage capacities maybe turn them into External storage units? Maybe flash a Barebones/lightweight ROM with an adequate file explorer and job done? That about sums it up for the phones if you have any question regarding details feel free to @ me and I'll try to answer asap. Again I'm open to any ideas you all may have.

i have been asking for advice on x300 and 4650g and i finaly got em. i managed to make it run and not to over heat and to be silent but i wanted to try to make it work without compromises. x300 is under waranty so modding its case is out of question so i made another. as i see it its biggest problem is a fan that is too close to case, so noise, and also the mesh doesnt allow enough air to be pulled inside, so i made it mesh free and made case slightly bigger so it can fit wraith spire with copper core. i had it in the drawer, thats why that exact cooler i dont have tools to make proper holes for front io but that is ok bcos i mostly dont need it and when i do all the case panels are fixed by welcro on inner frame so i can remove them in a second it can still reach 80c on consecutive runs of cinebench or prime95 but in gaming it doesnt go past 70C on silent mode 4650g igpu@2300mhz 2x8 crucial balistix 3200 cl 16 running at 3533 cl 16

Hi guys, I have an Asrosk Deskmini X300 kit, what I would like to use as a NAS, with two purposes: one would be a personal local data dump like google drive, and the second target would be as a media host, storing and streaming out to the selected music playlist into multiple rooms at my home. My question would be that to these purposes would be enough to use an AMD Ryzen 3000G to gain a super silent NAS, equipped with WD RED 2280 M2 SSD's only? How much RAM should I add? I thought to use as software Fedora Linux with Cockpit - so virtualised other instance of media streaming solution/jukebox would be amazing.... Any ideas? Thank you, Zoltan

So I decided that rather than have a bunch of old hardware kicking around, I should put it to use. I've been toying with the idea of a NAS for my wife and I to use. Now was the time. -The hardware - CPU - xeon e5 2650 RAM - 16gb (2x8gb) DDR3 Samsung ecc something or other. MoBo - The most generic Chinese MATX (literally all it says for identification is E5 VER 3.3A) PSU - 1u FSP 270w GPU - Kinology gtx750 (ever hear of this brand? Not I) Case - some wood and hot glue. Current drive is a temporary 2.5" Seagate 500gb to validate that everything is working. This will be replaced by likely 2 to 4 5tb 2.5" drives using unraid. The GPU cutout is off by about 5mm, but I couldn't be assed to recut it. I am waiting on a short power extension so I can actually plug it in without running the lead through the IO cutout. I am also tossing about the idea of adding a 120mm fan to the front, but it runs pretty cool as is. It sits at 75w currently. I would really like to swap out the gpu to something that uses less (I really don't need a gpu but I can't boot without it) and I'd like a lower power cpu, but that would mean a board swap, and the point of this build was to use what I had kicking around. To pretty it up, I'll be wrapping it in grey wallpaper that I have lying about. Jank, but it does the trick. The total size of the build is 9.7L

Hey everyone, this is my first post. I have a Toshiba Satellite with an i7-4700MQ, Geforce GT 740MQ, 16 Gb Ram, 256 Gb SSD & Tb HDD. No matter what i try, The laptop refuses to go over 800 NMhz, Both plugged in, on battery, doesn't matter. Power settings are all fine. attempted to reinstall windows, it reverted back to Windows 8. But still.... 800 Mhz. Ive tried everything Suggested in similar forums about the same issue on the same machine but they got it fixed with one of the suggested methods. it is a very cheap laptop cost wise to me, So any info is great

Hey guys. I recently got a desktop after years of using laptops. I have a somewhat old Laptop the specs are as follows Laptop Name: Lenovo Thinkpad X201 CPU: Intel Core i5-5200m Integrated GPU: Intel HD RAM: 6 GB of Ram I currently have OpenMediaVault installed on a usb running on the laptop along with the hard-drive bay as the main storage drive. I am using a usb wifi dongle since OMV supports that. Is it worth keeping this laptop as a nas or is it risky. Also OMV seems to be lacking some features and the gui looks out of date. I know the developer is working on OMV 6. Is it possible to install TrueNAS or UnRaid and use a wifi dongle instead of ethernet

I'm about to buy a 2014 Ford Edge, and I was wondering if anyone's ever tried to get Linux or a different version of Windows on one of these Ford systems. I can't find anything online about anyone doing this, but the preliminary research I've done online has revealed that Microsoft used Windows Embedded Automotive for Sync. The system has 2 USB 2.0 ports and an SD reader. I'm pretty sure the SD card reader contains the map data, and updates to the system are issued via flash drive. Seems like there should be a way to highjack the bootloader for the flashdrive and put another OS on there.

Hello, i was thinking that a GPU is basically a CPU but only handaling graphics things, so, I was wondering if it possible to build a custom GPU using old CPUs like an Intel Pentium 4 or a Core 2 Duo (for 2 CORE POWER!!!) and building on old laptop or old desktop ram so I have my GPU with dedicated vRAM, any idea of if it is possible and if it is how someone could do it, It will be fantastic if everyone can build one with almonst no skill in welding and an "easy to build thing" by the way, sorry if i mistspell something but english is not my native language so i don't speak it very well

This is going to be a project of which I do not know the outcome. This is going to push me well outside my comfort zone and over the next few weeks we are going to embark to create a wall mountable frame in which watercooling parts can be hung. In addition to constructing this frame out of 3/4th" extruded hollow aluminum rod we are going to attempt to assemble it not using nuts, bolts, and brackets but FIRE and Aluminum brazing rods. Outlined on the table above we have: 4x4' 3/4th" extruded aluminum rod Aluminum brazing rods 2 propane cylinders A propane torch various clamps A triangle for scoring lines Welders gloves & sleeves various abrasive files for making contours Safety glasses A cutting blade for the table saw Various sized heat-shrink (will come into use later) A steel brush for removing the oxidization layer from the Aluminum Acetone for removing oils from the prep surface Metal pick for scoring Other tools that may come into play include sand paper, sanding stones, stone and/or metal flat plates, 3D printed parts, drills, and bits. This, is going to be interesting and a heck of a learning experience for me. If in the off chance anybody has any tips or tricks they'd like to share feel free to comment as we go through the steps to build this.
