  1. Going to be setting up a low cost nas from spare parts I have collected over the years. Mostly data storage, but I plan on it doing at least one transcode over network to kodi or chromecast devices if I go down the plex route, pull data off it for adobe editing, and dumping obs streams over network to it. I have two ideas to do, the first is a bit strange but could be interesting to see if it works. Idea 1(lazy windows server): -Windows 10 -throw all my random drives into a JBOD style span volume -keep an archival drive that is larger than span that will act as a clone -set automated backup to archival drive -in event of failure in JBOD span, simply replace drive, add additional replacement drive to span, then move lost data back to spanned volume from archival drive(replacement will be same size or larger) Pros: -spanned drives and archival drive are readable by any windows machine and can be migrated to another machine in event of hardware failures without data loss -windows is easy, set up will be done quickly -adding drives to span is easy, and once I outgrow archival drive I can span that as well to increase it's size -these volumes aren't tied to hardware config of the server Cons: -windows and the word uptime in the same sentence has always made me nervous -"rebuilds" from archival drive will take forever -potentially abysmal speeds because spanning drives and window's software raid implementation is a mixed bag I have read. -limited software choices, less open source options for other things this server may end up doing Idea 2: -debian linux -snapraid to span volumes -fwbackup to move data to archival disk -samba for file sharing over network, offsite back up, etc. Pros: -stability and historically good uptime -snapraid seems to have a better implementation to prevent errors and data degredation and has more spanning options -more control over scheduled backups -much more can be done cheaply on linux as far as creating your own "cloud", hosting my own email server, etc. Cons: -unsure of ability to migrate spanned volume to another linux box in the event of hardware failure -much longer set up -steeper learning curve I am morbidly curious as to how the first option could turn out, and I have been putting off the hassle of establishing idea 2 as I am a bit rusty with terminal work, linux has just gotten easier over time for normal things I rarely use the terminal except to install programs. I am familiar with freenas and unraid and have been hesitant to use them for something so small. Freenas I haven't used and it seems to have a steeper learning curve than unraid. I am not going for a headless server, it will be in my rack under my desk so I will have it as the second input on my monitor and I have been a longtime user of synergy because I hate the cable spaghetti of kvm switches. I also plan to eventually have offsite backup via a friends router running wrt with sftp enabled for a usb hard drive. hardware I will be using, boot drive will be a 64gb usb 3 flashdrive: -phenom II x4 3ghz , 12gb ddr3, antec bronze 600 watt, lian li 4u rack case. -3tb hgst ultrastar, 2x 1.5tb barracudas, 1 hgst deskstar, 1tb wd green, will be buying an 8tb archival drive soon I am curious to see if anyone is interested in seeing how idea 1 can fair and I am willing to experiment with it as all the data I will be moving to it is already on drives on 3 machines so I can field test and not lose data short term, wont trust this system till I have had it running a few months.

  6. Hello! I got assigned the job of building a backup server for multiple virtual machines. I am looking for some advice regarding building such backup server, what i should not do, what are common points of failure and such. At the moment I have available a SuperMicro X8DT3 server (1xXeon E5504, 4GB ECC RAM), a plethora of 146GB ST3146356SS hard drives, which are probably going to be used just for the OS, then i have 8x1.5TB ST31500341AS drives, which i would like to use for the actual backup. The server will be running Bacula backup software, and the OS will be Debian jessie. The RAIDs should be probably done on software bases, the board is not equipped with any additional controller and the loss of whole array would fuck things up pretty bad. My questions: - The server is currently running off only one of the 146GB drives. I also have another one of the same kind plugged in but not configured. How do i make a RAID 1 of the disk currently used and the clean one, containing the OS? - The 8 1.5TB drives should be good but need to be verified. How to properly check they are good? Should they be subjected to some kind of torture test and a long SMART test? Or is there some other proper way? My current approach is to do a short SMART test using smartctl, then alternate between dding over whole drive and a series of bonnie++ benchmarks for 24h and then long SMART test which should not show any significant problems. - Any other tips and tricks or good practices when it comes to setting up said type of server? Thanks for all input! EDIT: Forgot to mention i do not have physical access 24/7 to it. 99% of the time i have only SSH connection.
  7. Hi there. I am bulding a modest gaming pc that should work also as my personal machine. Meaning I am planning on dual boot (windows for games and adobe; debian for the rest). Thing is, I am trying to decide over a mobo (nowadays Asus H110M-M.2 is on the top) but I am concerned about the BIOS coming with UEFI. Anyone know if it can be changed to legacy? Is there a f--g secure boot? I am aksing this because in the past I encountered problems between Linux and UEFI, and I wanna be sure it won't be the case with the new mobo. thanks.

  9. I am adding this //10.0.0.1/TooneTown%20Media /media/airport cifs password=<($PASSWORD)>,uid=1000,sec=ntlm,user 0 0 (Password replaced with ($PASSWORD) for security) to /etc/fstab when I refresh shares with sudo mount -a it says this mount error(13): Permission denied Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) Any Suggestions?
  10. I've been looking at setting it up so that the home file server we have at home can be accessed from away from the network via a vpn. So I looked at using this guide to set it up on my Debian 8.6 based system. https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-set-up-an-openvpn-server-on-debian-8 Well when I finished doing it and tried connecting to the VPN on my mac through Tunnelblick it didn't work. I tried purging all the things I installed (ufw and openvpn) and it still didn't work. When I tried to connect to the vpn through Tunnelblick it would just say "Waiting for server response" and it seems like it's not making a connection to the server. So I have a few questions, would it work if I try connecting to the vpn even if the mac and server are on the same network? And I should be using the public ip address, correct? I'm really just confused as to why this isn't working, and any suggestions as to what might be wrong are greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  11. Hey guys, So been playing around with a bit of Linux recently mainly Ubuntu and mint, and it got me thinking, busy Downloading the ISO now, just wanted to know how people found SteamOs in 2017 ? It getting as much attention as HL3 ? or is there still a bit of work been done ?
  12. I started planning out a new build. My current machine I built in 2012. When I started looking at cpu's I saw that they said -"Supported OS Windows 10 only"- Is this for real? I have got to have a linux machine. The plan was to run both linux and windows off of usb's or something along that line so I didn't have to dual boot . Ultimately I want my gaming machine can stay clean and dedicated to gaming only- and I can put all my day to day business on my Linux drive.I dual boot now and it annoys me.What I am wanting is a plug in OS . I want to stream twitch and youtube, Do vid editing, I use blender, hitfilm,..."Blender cooks my current machine" It is difficult to render anything really even with my gpu . 13. hello so yesterday I built a new server. the only storage in the system when I ran the installer was an m.2 ssd I migrated the program from my old server to my new server and now I just need to move the data hard drives that those programs use (specifically emby but I dont think that matters) When I plugged in the SATA drive and tried to boot this happened https://photos.app.goo.gl/53qmvYoKV6jKMU7G3 but then I unplugged the sata drive and tried to boot again and it was fine maybe because there were no sata drives in the system when I installed it, it never installed the sata controller drivers? (the NIC drivers were non-free and I had to load them from a usb stick during install) I have no clue what to do and have never installed drivers on a debian cli system before so if that is the problem I will need step by step help anyone know what to do ?
  14. I'm currently following this guide https://forum.level1techs.com/t/play-games-in-windows-on-linux-pci-passthrough-quick-guide/108981 to be able to make a vm with a pci passthrough. My vm is created, and everthing seem ok, but I get a black screen on the second screen (the vm screen) each time. You can find my virt config file here: https://pastebin.com/RrCuvXg8 lspci -k show that both my video card and audio card (on my video card) are using vfio 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. 15. for my emby server I couldn't figure out how to make my two 1tb hard drives into one volume to use for my media server so I mounted them as /MediaServer/disk1 and /MediaServer/disk2 sinse then I have discovered btrfs but im not sure exactly how to use it I need help combining both the drives to just be /MediaServer/ with the data striped across the two without loosing any of the data on the drives I found a command to convert a drive to btrfs and the debian wiki shows how to add a second drive but im not sure how to do what I need https://askubuntu.com/questions/198000/how-can-i-convert-an-ext4-partition-to-btrfs-or-other-file-systems-without-los
  16. hello, I have a server (specs are in my signature) that is hosting my website and my emby media server I have decided that I want to actually backup my desktop and laptop because i dont have backups right now I want to use it to make a network drive that I can mount over my vpn and backup my computers to it I want to buy 8tb drives for this. it looks like the cheepest way to get 8tb drives is to extract them from usb external hard drives I want to be able to expand the volume I am backing up to by adding more 8tb drives in the future im not sure but it is my understanding that with raid if you want to expand a volume you have to delete the old one and make a new one with the extra drives so I was thinking I would get this card that just makes sata ports from PCI and put it in my server https://www.amazon.com/IO-Crest-Controller-Non-Raid-SI-PEX40064/dp/B00AZ9T3OU/ I want it so every other drive I add to it is like this first one is capacityh and second is parity so I buy the 1st 8tb drive and i have an 8tb volume then I buy the second 8tb drive install it and run whatever commands expands the volume and I strill have my stuff and its still 8tb but I now have parity then I buy a thirds 8tb drive and now I have 16tb but only half of it has parity then I buy a 4th one and I have 16tb with full parity or maybe theres a better way to do that where for every 8tb drive I add I only get 4tb of usable space I have no clue is there a filesystem in debian that will do this for me? I have no clue what the proper words for this are to find the information I need apart from what I learned from the petobyte project video if you could lead me to a tutorial for how to set something like this up that would be great sunnary of main features: * ability to add blank disks without loosing any data already in the array * automatic drive parity * ability to swap out a single dead drive and run a comand and not loose anything PS: i really liked how in the LTT video he said "so to set this up you just run this command and it scans all the drives and sets them up in the best way to maximise storage space but have parity and if you add drives or swap drives just run the command again" if anyone could help me with this it would be greately appreciated
  17. does this look any good for a replacemnt for my core 2 duo server running my website and my zoneminder security system? http://a.co/bDtsgRM i would also want to add emby onto it ( i currently have emby on a second computer but with how much of a performance bump this will be over my current i think i should be able to consolidate
  18. I recently installed Deepin OS (based on Debian) and absolutely love it so far. My only issue is pretty big, though. One of my two monitors doesn't have any input, not even black. My BIOS's default graphics device is my graphics card, with my APU force enabled. The monitor that doesn't work is on the APU. When I force my APU to be the default device, my GPU's monitor is disabled. Both work in Windows. Here's some feedback from commands that I've run.lspci | grep VGA 00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. 19. I recently set up a PCI passthrough VM on Debian using Virtual Machine Manager to run Windows 10 for a few games. Everything seems to be running flawlessly except for my audio, which is giving me issues. Using ich6/ich9 there's pretty bad crackling and with AC97 it lags the VM like crazy and still crackles. I've followed the troubleshooting guide on the Arch Wiki, tried adjusting the bit-rate in Windows, as well as try the methods on this guy's site, however nothing seems to get rid of it. I'm using an external USB DAC (a Fiio E07K) and I'd like to avoid simply passing its USB bus through or buying a separate sound card if possible. Is there anything else I can try? Thanks! My specs: OS: Debian unstable x86-64 Kernel: 4.9.0-3-amd64 CPU: Intel Core i7 7700K Motherboard: Z270X-Gaming K7 GPU1: Intel HD 630 GPU2: NVidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti EDIT: I managed to figure out the issue. It turns out it was an issue with my CPU layout and the host OS needed an extra core for audio emulation.
  20. Hi Guys, I recently purchased a tinker board and I got everything to work but gnome. If I try to load Gnome from the lock screen the buttons disappear and nothing happens for about 4 seconds, after that my pointer gets centered and that's it. I've tried to reinstall Gnome, I've even tried to reinstall the OS. Can somebody help me? I'm a Linux noob. Thanks in advance.
  21. Finally! https://fossbytes.com/debian-linux-9-stretch-released-date-download/ Still using Xserver and Gnome. I do not think I will be hosting any party for this. I want to know from Ryzen Linux users if 4.9 is high enough for Ryzen as there were some more kernel advancements for 4.9 but there were some more after 4.9. It is a bit shitty to have AMD release their catch-up CPU so close to the Debian freeze. I see Debian 9 competing with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. Currently Ubuntu 16.04 is at kernel 4.8. Debian 9 is using kernel 4.9. http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Linux-4.9-Kernel-Highlights I do not see anything super special in 4.9 to move me from recommending Ubuntu 16.04. I do like Debian; I used it for years before I upgraded my hardware but Ubuntu is just better for new hardware. if you see something special that Debian 9 has over Ubuntu 16.04 please comment below i will be very interested in your view. I do not give a shit about the desktop interface!!! Yes I know debian uses gnome and ubuntu uses unity. I personally use ubuntu on my desktop and laptop. I use gnome on ubuntu on my laptop because i just like it. I use unity on my mulit-monitor desktop because unity is better for multiple monitors. I want to know about hardware compatibility and if the difference between 4.8 and 4.9 is significant. 4.8 on Ubuntu 16.04 is really good BTW
  22. Hi, I want to build a personal server at home because I love building computers and playing with linux. My goal is primarily to create a personal cloud (using nextcould or owncloud) to have "unlimited" storage volume. I might use it to store some database or websites for some school project but it won't be anything big and heavy. I planned some parts but I want to have others opinions: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/fKrLgL The main concerns I have about my build are: Is the I3 is enough for the build or an i5 would be better. Is the motherboard reliable enough (I think it's ok but it might be a better option somewhere) Other then that I think it's a pretty solid choice but I might be wrong I'm planning to install Debian and create a raid 5 array of the 3 mechanical drives (I picked 4tb drives but I might take 2tb instead). All i really want is a powerfull enough machine that is as quiet as possible Thank's in advance guys!
  23. my router died and im using a shitty 2006 airport from the thrift store in the mean time but it keeps locking up and i have to unplug it and plug it back in (multiple times a day) as far as I can tell dhcp is whats locking up anyway I want to use linux to do a router instead of buying a router but I dont want to use pfsense because of its shitty wireless support. I think im going to put debian on it. I want to buy this barebones pc and put the max ram in it. I have chosen it because it is the cheepest barebones i can find that has dual nic's and wireless and doesent need too much else to get running https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16883218075 I want to get that and get ram from the electronics thrift store called grey bears in my area. http://www.greybears.org/thrift-store/computer-store/ so my software setup would need to be... eth0 WAN eth1 LAN (to switch) WL0 LAN (broadcast network for wireless devices to join) how hard would this be to do? does anyone have any advice? does that boneless have any fatal flaws i should know about? im probably going to use it as a database and MQTT/node-red server as well if that is possible ontop of its routing
  24. I was thinking about buying a surface pro 3. As a 2nd computer for on the go. I really hate windows to my core other then for gaming. I just haven't touch windows in like 2-3 years.other then for business. I wondering if I can use everything even the touch screen and volume rockers.
  25. Hi, Everyone I was looking into buying or building 2 Virtualization machine for couponing with old parts. I wanted to spend no more than 300$ in one machine. I figure if I setup a email server and bots to make it more productive. So I know that each coupon requires the person to register with them. That's where a email server comes in. I was wondering if it's possible to use the bots to make random email address and handle the sign up process. I know that the site's going to require me to prove. I am not a bot. I got away around that if this might work. So Is it possible to make the bots text me a pic of the bot test section of the page. Then I tell it what to say by texting back a answer? Note the reason, I am looking into this is because. I am really into saving money. The server's would pay for themselves after about 1 year. from how much I would've saved. I love to buy bulk. So for example: At kroger they had Annie's mac and cheese for sale 0.88$ originally 1.50$ . Now with the saving coupon of 0.50$ limit 3 a computer.. it would come up as 0.38$. If I get 100 boxes. I in return save 155$. The virtual servers would download and handle almost everything from the servers. Can this be done????
