I have two nearly full 640 GB hard drives but they are so old that I don't know how to read them on my current rig. I want the data though so I can consolidate and get rid of these old hard drives... What is the 8 pin ( not 8 pin power ) socket on the right side of the hard drive opposite of the sata1 socket? I would like to take care of this sooner than later. Do I need to purchase an external casing and adapter to accomplish retrieving this data, or is there a kind of interface that I need for the 8 pin socket on the hard drive and what is that called?

My company is looking for an of sight place to store our video and editing data. in the last 2 years we've amassed around 25TBs of content but as we expand our workload I would expect this to grow faster. What would LTT or the Ltt community recommend for a terabyte scaled off-sight cloud backup? I know Amazon could be an option but there are so many offerings I wanted to do some research first. So I built a computer a while ago based on the pentium g4560. It uses an 80GB ssd for most of my applications (including windows), while the hdd stores my games and other large files. I want to sell my motherboard, ssd, and CPU to buy a ryzen 5 CPU and mobo. I really want to know if there is a way to put all of my stuff onto the hdd without having to reinstall or do a fresh install. Thanks!

Hi, I am trying to do a project for school in which I create a graph for the views of youtube videos. The graph will consist of the date and the amount of view on that video. I am trying to find some raw data for the youtube videos but with no luck. I tried using socialblade, but they only have data on the subscriber count. They also do not allow you to downoad to data as a csv. I tried using google trends, but they do not have view data, but they do allow you to download as csv. Is there anybody who knows a website or way to collect this data as an excel doc. Thank You

Hello, I was looking to extend one of my partitions since it didn't have enough room for games. I have a 5 TB drive and am trying to expand a 500 GB partition. By extending my 500 GB partition, will I lose all of my data on the partition or will the partition expand without losing data?

Hello, I'm looking into building my own home server (my synology nas is acting up and i want to replace it) My original idea was to use a raid 5 config (3*4tb) (I already have 2 relatively new drives in the nas i want to reuse and plan on buying the same model as a 3rd). (wd reds) Now that i started researching on raid 5 i mainly read bad stuff about it. And very few ppl saying that its ok for home use. This raid would contain video files (I don't really care about loosing) and family pictures and documents.(which i care about).(which i was planning to back up to an extra ext hdd as well for safety.) anybody here has any exp with running raid 5 and or had problems with it. this is my first "server"(windows sever) build and would appreciate any help, tips and info.

Hi all. So so my family and I are going away to Europe and the U.K. In the next few months and I would like to get a SIM card with a data contract on it. The need for it is that my parents aren't very tech savvy and they don't really understand how to connect to wifi hotspots. So to avoid this I would like to purchase a data contract on a SIM card which will be placed inside a wifi emitting device (like those potable wifi hotspot devices that you place a SIM card in). I plan to use 2 of these devices so that we're not stuck to one. It will also allow us to call each other and family from wherever we are if we get separated. Please se can you let me know of which isp's are good and have good coverage in Italy, France and England as well as what contacts they offer. A link to their websites would also be very helpful. I am from South Africa as a side note. Thank you very much for your time and have a wonderful day!

Hi guys, I haven't built a system in a while and I am looking for guidance. What it will be used for: A lot of data mining and calculations. I basically have a program that deals with a lot pulling and pushing data in and out from the web. It will run 24/7. Some days there will be exporting a lot of data into excel and then I will be calculating excel sheets while the program is still running (hopefully this makes sense). I will also need the system to push out 4k (3840x2160 works fine...if you are picky about it being true 4k) I don't know how much the work load will increase on the system but i was recommended to pick an i5 over i7 by the programmers of the system for my work load. My thoughts: CPU: Ryzen 7 1700 (future proofing...if not the 12thread might work just as well) RAM: 16gb ram (I lost touch on the ram and whole ryzen thing but I'm not OC soooo I don't think it should matter) MOBO: ASUS ROG STRIX B350-F (this was on sale but I missed the deal b/c I was overthinking...so what now...) GPU: The Ryzen should have a built in one...if not I have a 650ti laying around here...there will be no graphic work just used to display) Case: Full ATX with 3 pre-installed fan...240, 240, and 140mm if I remeber correctly...one I have picked out is $80 open box PSU: EVGA 500 W1, 80+ WHITE 500W (Help me out on this...what you think?) https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-WHITE-Warranty-Supply-100-W1-0500-KR/dp/B00H33SFJU/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1499967300&sr=1-1&keywords=power+supply STORAGE: ADATA SU800 M.2 2280 128GB Ultimate 3D NAND Solid State (I have an Cursair SSD at home and a extra 250gb M.2. in my laptop...but what do you guys think of this? Never used them before but reviews are good) https://www.amazon.com/ADATA-SU800-M-2-128GB-ASU800NS38-128GT-C/dp/B01M9K0N8I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1499967552&sr=8-1&keywords=adata+m.2 Price: Less than $600...shooting for ~$550? After mail and rebate would be fine. The case I have picked out is $80 but I'm open to anything. Thanks ahead you guys/gals , hopefully, I provided enough information.

I recently started using a external hard drive (Seagate 1TB expansion HDD) that I have rarely used over the last 3 years (Used more or less once every 6 months to add (around 20GB) of files and only 8 and 3 months ago to copy (200GB) I've realized that the hard drive contains files that are only present on said HDD, I've copied the files off to another computer. I'm curious if there is a way to verify all the data has actually stayed over the last 3 years or if some have been lost, I'm not entirely sure how Hard Drives operate so what worries me if the drive has lost some data to it losing its magnetic field, cable was damaged (not sure how to test the cable), it corrupt when copying, or some other fault could have occurred. I have ran the seatool tests: Short DST, Short Generic, Smart, Identify, and Long Generic, they all passed. I've also ran Chkdsk with the option "Scan and recover bad sectors" it also ran successfully, I've also ran Dells support assist application with both its long and short tests, they both passed. Crystal Disk Info also says the drive is healthy. I'm not sure if all this was overkill, but it has data that is really important to me on the drive, my question is, do all those tests passing show the data is all correct, fine, present and uncorrupt? Or what other tests do you recommended to make sure its all there and doesn't need sending to a recovery firm. Thanks in advance

I just bought a 1TB SSD for my pc, meaning to fully replace my current 700GB hard disc. I have a SATA3 6Gbs cable too. I'm using a desktop, and Windows 10. I've searched for a while but can't find out how to migrate all my data from my disc to my SSD properly. I'm unsure how I should hook up my new SSD physically, and what software I should be using to migrate my data. Free software is certainly preferable. If someone could link me a guide, that would be much appreciated. Thanks.

In today's world almost nothing we use uses the parallel type of data transfer, its all serial. I do understand why this is because its easier to speed up a single connection than many simultaneous connections since all the simultaneous connections have to arrive at the same time and little differences in the data paths make a bigger difference, along with cross talk between the wires. But what if you could make a protocol that allowed the data to not have to arrive at the same time? Would this solve the problem with parallel as a viable way of data transfer in today's world?

Thanks to Grandad for pointing out an error in one of our recent graphs. It's from the video AMD’s Comeback MEASURED!- Viewers’ Choice PC [Q2 2017] at 04:15 and the graph is Graphics Card OEM Market Share. You'll notice that the pie in the existing graph (below) doesn't add up to 100%, and that's because EVGA's 37% share is missing. Here's what the graph should have looked like: We're now re-evaluating our QA process for graphs in an effort to avoid similar errors in future videos. Get it right, get it tight ya know?

Hi guys. I made a NAS with 4 drives 1TB each in Raid 5 with FreeNAS. The point is that I have been losing family photos very often using external hardrives, and I wanted to make a safe place to store all my data. Is it safe for me to put everything in the NAS? Can you guys give me tips and solutions to make a "bulletproof" way to store my data?

Hello LTT forums, I was getting plastered while watching bad 80's movies with friends when a very good friends laptop (some $1,000 Acer) just died. It wasn't dropped, didn't move at all, it just gave up the ghost while plugged into a TV streaming YouTube. Having two computer science grads, and a CS junior in the room we mobilized immediately. Checked the BIOS, the drive was there but the damn thing wouldn't boot for it's life. We then ripped the bottom plate off the laptop, and pulled the drive. 1.0 TB WD10SPCX-21KHST0 Dated July 2015 DCM: HVTJBBO Basically this: I then took the drive home and proceeded to drop it into my system. No boot, this drive seems to hang whenever all the system drives need to be polled (this happens when opening My Computer or running any utility that scans the drives as well). So I configured RST to hot-plug and let my system boot, then I hot-plugged the drive. My immediate first go to tool is Macrium Reflect. After a trip to Microcenter to grab a new SSD for the laptop, Macrium managed to scan the drive and was ready to go, so we imaged the drive. We tried to mount the image, but windows kicked back something like "unrecognizable filesystem". Shit. We had already thought of the possibility that we were getting back crap data from the drive during the agonizingly long 10 hour image. Still don't know at this point. Further attempts to use the drive failed. Either the drive BSOD'd the system or it just never stopped spinning whatever program was trying to query it. I should mention the disk does spin and there is no clicking sounds. I then wrote that image to a working drive and attempted more traditional data recovery steps. All my tools failed to find anything in that partition. So I was thinking the next step would be to buy an identical replacement drive and swap the controller boards. But I don't really know, help would be deeply appreciated. Thanks, -Cody

Hey there. I am currently researching hobby rocket stuff. My team plans to launch a rocket 30,000 ft in the sky. I am looking for help on three things. 1. Microcontroller - Looking for a fantastic microcontroller to implement the sensors and communicate data. So far just looking at options from Arduino due to various options and robust library. 2. Sensors - Where to find high precision sensors that will work with said microcontroller. Need stuff like GPS, Gyroscope, Temperature/Humidity, Pressure maybe even camera. The type of accuracy I am looking for is stuff like real time GPS, sensor able to recognize up to 30G pressure, gyro that can give rotational data etc. 3. Communication - Looking for a method to communicate the data from the sensors live from the rocket. Current idea is to use HAM Radio. Currently limited to the public wavelengths that do not require license. So transmitting the GPS, Gyro, Pressure in real time is something I am looking for. Best possible option would be a method that can also transmit video of any quality. Currently thinking of getting arduino setup to work with sensors, transfer that data to a raspberry pi. The pi would then be connected to the radio stuff to transmit the data to a base station. The base station would do calculation and plot the data. Unless if the arduino is capable of transferring the data through a module of some sort. Thank you for any help. Edit: Forgetting about radio. Moving on to LoRA or LTE-M

EU's General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) might become a law in the UK, if it passes and gets adopted. The law fines companies of up to €20 Million, for failure to protect consumer data when there is a data breach. It will also set, As of now because of UK's Investigatory Powers Bill, ISPs are required to store consumers browsing history and contacts of up to 1 year, if this passes then it should add another layer of protection for the consumers. GDPR will also, https://www.overclock3d.net/news/misc_hardware/british_companies_could_face_fines_of_20_million_if_a_data_breach_occurs/1

So one day I was reinstalling windows and disaster struck... I deleted all the partitions on a hard drive that was not meant to have my OS. The HDD had personal data. I realized my mistake and I stopped doing anything to it, even formatting it. The hard drive does not appear on windows explorer, but it does appear in disk management as having a "RAW" file system. I'm trying to use recuva to get my information back but when choosing the desired HDD, recuva tells me it's "unable to determine file system type". I would appreciate some tips or advice on what to do. Should I give the HDD a format? Should I use another data recovery program? I'm just being very cautious not to ruin any information I may be able to recover. FYI, I'm trying to recover data from a western digital black 1TB HDD, if that makes a difference. Thanks. I attached some screenshots of the issue:
