I'm going into computer science next year and need a laptop, cant be a MacBook. I wont use it for gaming, just for uni work. The course work is primarily coding, so something with a high battery life would be appreciated. these are the universities recommended specs as a guideline: OS: Windows 10 or 11. SCREEN: 13-15.6" HD screen RAM: 8GB minimum prefer 16GB. STORAGE: 256GB Minimum. CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD Athlon X4 740 (or equivalent CPU/processor capable of virtulization). VIDEO CARD: GeForce GTX 660 (2048 MB) or Radeon R9 285 (2048 MB) SOUND CARD: DirectX compatible. budget is a max of $3000 AUD, fine with a little extra if really needed

Hi! I want to buy a laptop under the budget of 1300US dollars, preferably around 1100. I am a junior computer science student but my work flow does actually need the lastest hardware features. That's why I'm set to get a 40 series and preferably a 13th gen Intel or 70 series AMD... I type alot, so I do need a good keyboard to get me to full speed. And of course just like everyone else I would be happy if the built quality is good enough to last me more than 2-3 years... My last laptop was an IdeaPad 520 that got a broken hinge(which led to the screen breaking 2 times!) And at least 3 of the key caps just fall out when I type because of the tremendous abuse I put them through... In those 3 years that I had it I went from 20 wpm to now around 100... So those keys have seen alot of abuse. I know that not all of the things I specified will be available... I don't need the most powerful thing... Even a 4050(to be honest a 3050 is enough power for me) and an i5 12th gen is good... But as I said I mostly need the new features... Based on my budget I think a 4060(for the extra VRAM) and a 13th gen "U" CPU is gonna be possible... Yet I don't know that many Laptops that I can be assured of the built quality(and it being easily fixable!) Extra stuff that I would be very happy to have is a 100+Hz display... A numpad... And above 16" size... Maybe 1440p display although that is just pushing it with this budget really... But each of these could be an extra point... Maybe I'm being unrealistic with my budget... But I would be happy to hear any criticism and any suggestions that don't necessarily match my requirements.

Hey guys, I could really use some help choosing a suitable laptop for my bachelors program. From next year I’ll be starting my undergraduate program for computer science and Engineering and I want to buy a new laptop to take me through (at least) my bachelor of 3 years. I want it to have optimal specs for CS related tasks with graphical capabilities for rendering and editing videos. I also want to be able to do light to medium load AI/ML stuff on it. Does anyone here have any suggestions/tips for some things I should be specifically looking for in the laptop I am going to buy? Are there any suitable models / brands that come to mind which have proven to be reliable and a good choice for my purposes? Just some things to keep in mind: - My budget is about €2500 - I live in the Netherlands so I should be able to buy it ( cuz I heard some models are continent specific or something? ) Thank you in advance

Hey! I'm looking for a laptop for college(Computer Science), I already have a powerful PC at home and really looking for something for on campus use only(I will be returning home daily). I considered getting a refurbished Surface 3 for around that price but the 8GB non upgradeable ram really put me off it. I also looked at the Asus VivoBook 15 and 14 lineups but came across some pretty terrible reviews I'm mainly interested in 12GB+ of ram, capable CPU and battery life that would last me a typical university day. I would greatly appreciate feedback from anyone with user experience with any of the laptops mentioned or any other recommendations will be most welcome as well as I really haven't made up my mind yes. Thanks!

I’m looking for a laptop for when I start school next year, but if I get a laptop, I want to make sure that it will still be fast enough to last me all through school so at least 5-6 years. On the schools website that have their minimum requirements but I was hoping to find a laptop that I could upgrade my cpu, gpu, etc later down the road if I need it. I know cpu/gpus in laptops normally aren’t replaceable, but I did find an Alienware 51m laptop that is fully replaceable, it’s just expensive. Or if I get like a 9th gen i9, will that still be fast enough in 5-6 years? The schools minimum requirements are below. Any help is appreciated! Operating System: Windows 10, 64 Bit Processor: Intel 8th Gen i5 or i7 Memory (RAM): 8GB RAM Hard Drive: 250+ GB Graphics Card: Built-in (Intel) Wireless: 802.11 a/c dual band Office Suite: Office 2013 Professional or newer Antivirus Software: Required for campus students. Strongly recommended for online students. Optional Accessories: CD/DVD drive, external hard drive, extra power cord and headphones/earbuds

Hey guys, I found some free online courses for intro computer science, game development, AI, web design, and app design. I'm currently working on the intro computer science course and would definitely recomend it. It is through harvard, and you do get a certificate for it, so for a teenager like me with only volunteer and retail experience id imagine it would be a resume booster as well. Just thought I should let you know, in case anyone wants to learn a new skill while in quarantine. https://www.edx.org/course/cs50s-introduction-to-computer-science they are free, but its 80 USD for a professional certificate, and you don't pay unless you decide to at the end of the course. (Not sponsored, just definitely recommend) EDIT: I just realised how much I sound like a pyramid scheme salesman

I am currently in the market for a new laptop at around 1400 - 1700 USD (so a little over 1000 USD in the US due to EU duties). As I'll be moving to the UK for uni, I don't care in what country I buy the laptop (whether UK or Czechia) I don't really plan to game on it and most heavy machine learning tasks can be done over cloud computing (all heil google collab), so I believe quadcore U-type intel chips should be fine for my needs. Expectations: To last me a couple of years (3-4) without becoming sluggish. i5/i7-u quad-core processors should suffice for whatever I wish to do 8+ gigs of ram, ideally upgradable, but I guess 8 could do the job. 256+GB ssd good battery life not too sure about weight, but anything under 1.5kg seems reasonable. Love using split-screen in windows, so 14-inch display would be really cool after struggling with split-screen on 13.3" laptop, though I could do with a 13" laptop if it had something to extra to offer. a backlit keyboard is a must after my current laptop without it. Currently, I'm considering the following ones though I am open to recommendations: Thinkpad T490 - godlike keyboard, seems to be quite resilient, 14", upgradable ram/SSD Huawei matebook x Pro - 14" glory, though I don't seem to be able to purchase the 2019 model and don't want to buy an outdated one at this price. huawei matebook 13 - pretty decent value I suppose Surface laptop 2 - 3:2 14" screen is beautiful, the keyboard seems alright, miss USB-C/thunderbolt 3, but I guess I can embrace the dongle life with it's USB 3.0 dell XPS 13 - Everyone seems to love this one, but it just doesn't attract me. I/O is great and love thunderbolt 3 support, but the keyboard seemed to have a really weird spacing. (9380 is very expensive here, i5, 8GB ram and 256GB ssd comes to 1760 USD) I've also thought about the surface pro 6, but I pretty much haven't taken any notes throughout highschool (IB) and preferred learning from online materials/study guides, so I guess this trend will follow at uni.

I'm beginning a Master of Computer Science degree next year, and would like to buy a laptop now in preparation. I live in Australia and have a budget of ~$2000AUD, but I am happy to pay a bit more if there is something that has a lot more value for the cost. As i'll be using it for uni, i'd like some decent battery life, and not to be super heavy so that I can move it around. I'm looking for something that has a dedicated GPU, with hopefully the ability to be used as portable VR in the future if it's within budget constraints. Some of the options i've been looking at so far are the Lenovo Y540 (https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/legion-laptops/lenovo-legion-y-series/Lenovo-Legion-Y540-15/p/81SXCTO1WWENAU1/customize?), Y740 (https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/81UHCTO1WWENAU3/customize?guid=865d3e57-032f-4246-a1f5-1217790edc25&options_11=), and MSI P65 Creator 8RE (https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Notebooks/Workstation-Laptops/74509-P65-Creator-8RE-048AU) The Y540 looks great for the price, but i'm a little worried about the display not being very bright, is this something I should be concerned about? Does the P65 8RE have any build quality issues? I'd love any advice on the choices above, or if there are any better value alternatives that I should be considering! Thanks for your help!

Hey, I am currently less than 16 years old and want to pursue a career in computer engineering. I have a firm grasp on math, ( trig.etc ) and I want just wondering about how I could learn more. I plan to get a masters in this subject anyway, but I kind of want to start early. Should I wait and learn some things in school, or try and gain a bit of knowledge prior? Does anyone have any tips/suggestions? -(based on a post I saw earlier)

Hi, I am from the UK and I will be starting university in September. I was having trouble finding what laptop to buy. I am doing a CS(Computer science) course so I know that it has to be minimum 8gb of ram.At the moment I was thinking about the LG gram 15(£950 ,$1200) but some reviews say I should expect better hardware for that price and I am not too worried about it having dedicated GPU as I have a PC. Any help is appreciated .Thanks Link to the laptop: https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/lg-gram-i15z980-15-6-intel-core-i5-laptop-256-gb-ssd-silver-10182480-pdt.html?istCompanyId=bec25c7e-cbcd-460d-81d5-a25372d2e3d7&istFeedId=4d7eb93e-055f-499d-8ee5-1cdcc50d67d1&istItemId=wpppprram&istBid=tztx&srcid=198&cmpid=ppc~gg~1011 (PLA) Windows Laptops and Convertibles - Adaptive~1011 (PLA) Windows Laptops And Convertibles ad group~Exact&mctag=gg_goog_7904&kwid=GOOGLE&device=c&ds_kids=92700027234655884&tgtid=1011 (PLA) Windows Laptops and Convertibles - Adaptive&&gclid=CjwKEAjwue3nBRCCyrqY0c7bw2wSJACSlmGZdg2glbo97zpTa6kdNy1fCel2WFhEmwcTh-VFA0xxshoCX2vw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

Why does my PC keep shutting down? After 2 years of almost excellent service, my potato has started suddenly shutting down, while doing something, or even when idle. sometimes the thing restarts, but usually shuts down again. Sometimes after turning on again, or the power button lights up, fan spins, but There is no display output, and the HDD LED is not lit. If this happens, i hold the power button, shut it down, and turn it on again. I repeat this process 3-4 times, then Leave it for 20 mins, then it boots. After booting , it can act normal, shut down, or can restart at boot screen! i have award bios, and two pages are shown at startup, usually, it shuts down after showing the first page. The repair person said the mobo is fine. I have no overclocks, There are no temperature issues. The specs:- AMD FX-6300. 6 core, 3.5Ghz. Onboard graphics,AMD ATI Radeon HD 3000 Gigabyte GT-78LMT ultra durable AM4 MOBO. 760g chipset. 1x4GB DDR3 288-DIMM 1600MHz RAM. (Mobo supports upto 1333Mhz) Seagate Barracuda 1TB HDD 255 W generic non 80+ psu Stock cpu cooler. The system is used for very basic ms word stuff, web browsing, movies and stuff. Once in a blue moon, I play retroes such as GTA SA or NFS mw, when I'm incredibly bored.on low settings. I have tried checking connections inside, reseating RAM formatting Hdd,using different HDD, changing OS, etc. none worked. what do I do?? Pardon my English. I know the problems and things I did are weird. This thing has been a brick for months now. Even two repair shops gave up. I'm unleashing the nerd in me again.

I am stuck on this question. part A is simple enough. I start plundering the first ship then look into the next ship, if the cost of plundering the next ship yields net positive gain, include both ships in my to plunder list. If no net postive, keep looking the next ship down until there is a positive, if there is, include all these ships to my to plunder list, rinse and repeat, if no net postive found, I break off at the last of the currently included ship. What I am stuck on is part B, I get he can now choose any ships as the starting ship but would he still need to plunder the rest in order, from left to right? If so, can I get some hint at the best alogrithm to use? @Dash Lambda I ask for your expertise and assistence once again. Please help me out. ? God bless you!

Hey Guys, In about 2 weeks I will start working on my Bachelor Thesis in CS. My educational background is Game Programming so I think they would like to see some relevence to game development for the thesis. Anyways, I have some ideas for what framwework I would like to work in: - NO user studies - Should be performance related - Something with DirectX 12 The scope is 15 ECTS credit points and the time span is about 3-4 months. A teacher of mine suggested to maybe look into data traversel for big scenes in DX12 (Harddisk->Memory->Graphics card). This would be relevant for something like open world games, which has become very popular amongst developers these days. Anyways, I'm really terrible at coming up with ideas.. so I hope you guys could help me with ideas or just hint at something that you think I should look into. Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone, I'm going to start as a computer science student in a few weeks but I'll need a laptop to accompany me. I have a gaming rig at home (3770k, 16gig RAM, GTX 1060 6gig), though I'll need to upgrade it some time in the future. I don't have a laptop at the moment and that's why, I would like to find a something, which will be enough for my everyday tasks. It should be light enough, because I will need to carry it to University everyday and have decent battery life (around 6h min). It should be 13''-15'' big, but I would prefer 15". Build quality should also be pretty good. I don't really like Apple, so a machine for Windows/Linux would be preferable. For performace, it should be good enough to do coding, VM's, some CAD, Photoshop, browsing and other typical CS stuff. My budget is around 2500€

Hello Guys, my current situation: i got a gaming rig at home (i7 4770k, 16GB RAM, GTX 1070) and i got a Dell XPS 15 9570 (i7 8750h, 16GB RAM, GTX 1050Ti). The first plan was selling my gaming rig, buying an eGPU and do everything on my XPS. But my PC runs so damn good, its hard for me to sell it . I'm considering selling the XPS and getting something cheaper, because i dont need the power on the go (anymore). I really like the Design, Trackpad, Panel and Quality of the XPS and because i had a MacBook before i bought the XPS, i want something on the same level of Quality. The XPS runs quite well since i optimized it a bit (Temps are OK and fans wont go on at light-medium workload) So my current plan (maybe it gets rejected again ): - sell my XPS 15 9570 - buy a Laptop, that runs Windows (and probably Linux) without any compromises - the new laptop shouldn't be really expensive so i can save some money on that (otherwise i could just keep my XPS) What do i want to do on the go? - browsing the web - coding - maybe photoshop later - some office stuff (Word, Excel, PP - nothing intensive) - 14" would be ideal - i need a good Keyboard and Trackpad - FullHD is enough - Battery life >4-5h What are my favourites atm? - Lenovo X1 Carbon - Lenovo T480s I am from germany and my budget would be around 1400€ (less is better, otherwise i will just keep my XPS)

Laptop for College (CS) needed! 2000$ Budget!
Cocijo posted a topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
Hey! I start studying Computer Science in October, so naturally I'll need a laptop. At home I do have a fairly powerful desktop pc, but I have no idea what laptop to get.. Things I definitely want: long battery life I'd prefer not to bother with finding an outlet, especially since I'll mostly use it for school stuff (taking notes, doing presentations, but also programming!) but no heavy work like video rendering or gaming lightweight and thin I'll be carrying it with me everywhere, everyday, and I'd prefer not to have that be a pain in the ass back meaning: less than 2kg! long lasting (new) hardware right now I still work full time, so paying up to 2000 bucks for a laptop is manageable for me. Once I start studying, that won't be the case however. meaning: It has to last for 3 years, and feel good by doing so. Buying an 8th generation i5/i7 makes sense to me for that reason. The extra cores are gonna come in handy! Windows Maybe Linux as a dual boot setup, but no Mac OS. Reliable Build Quality I don't need some rugged outdoor/ military system, but I'd prefer something metal, not plastic. Doesn't have to be much of a looker either. Just has to work. Things I definitely won't need/ don't want: A dedicated GPU Like I said, I won't be doing any graphicly intense stuff like CAD, video editing or gaming on this, at worse I'll be playing some Jackbox (really fun party game you play mostly on your phone), but that's nothing onboard graphics can't handle! good trackpad I absolutely HATE trackpads, meaning I'll always carry a mouse with me anyways. I do want a nice keyboard though... 2in1 capabilities I'm not a huge fun of the way 2in1s hinges seem to be...... quite... loose all the time. Can't really describe it. Anyway: Don't need it, don't want it. just standard clamshell design is fine for me! Touchscreen It's not like I'm actively trying to avoid it, so if it has one that's fine, but I won't use it. Just gonna get dirty and wobble. Paying upwards of 2000$ From what I've seen it's not necessary. I technically could, If I really wanted to, but I honestly don't see the point. Things I'm not so sure about what I need: screen size I've had recommendations from friends to go with 13', since that's more portable and also works better with the limited space of auditorium desks, but then again I'm kind of a big guy with equally big hands, and I'm afraid I'll just be getting frustrated with the 13'. RAM I'm kind of a tab hoarder, meaning 16gb would be nice, but I'm pretty sure I could make 8 work. kind of depends on the price and the hardware that goes with it. CPU power I'll not necessarily need the most advanced CPU for the tasks themselves, but having that extra bit of responsiveness, as well as a decrease, if tiny, of compiling time could be nice. Also great for longevity! On the other hand, one of the "U" processors could be nice, considering it is far less taxing on battery. Here's the systems that seem to fit my needs I found so far: LG Gram (2018 edition!) What I like: great weight great battery What I don't like: kind of seems wobbly Import => bad/ no customer support Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro What I like: battery sturdy What I don't like: kind of on the heavy side Import => bad/ no customer support XPS 13/15 (2018 edition!) What I like: sturdy the 13' is very light... What I don't like: ...but the 15' is rather heavy battery is mediocre compared to the others Any other systems you can recommend that roughly fit my need? I'm thankful for any and all suggestions! Laptops are just waaaay different then when I build my desktop. Kind of easy to throw in all the best stuff and be done with it. Can't really do that with a Laptop- 13 replies

I'm looking for a new laptop for college (Cybersecurity major, going to be a freshman in the fall) that will be able to last me the entire 4 years, but I'm not sure what I should be looking for spec wise. Things that I'm probably going to be doing on a regular basis: Programming in multiple languages Running a lot of Chrome tabs, with some of them being videos/streams (my Chrome profile also has a good amount of extensions) and Discord Writing papers PowerPoints Virtual machines (not sure if this will be something I have to do for school) Things that I want to do occasionally - According to some people, I won't even have the time to do ANY of this stuff because of the workload professors dump on you lol Play the following games at 1080p resolution, in order of how much I care to play them Rocket League (Performance is fine, High Quality would be nice) Minecraft (yeah i know cringe game. 16 chunk render distance, no shaders, modpacks sometimes) osu! (240fps+, minimal input lag) PUBG (Medium is fine, high would be nice) CS:GO (Medium is fine) Stream said games to Twitch at 720p (30fps is fine, 60fps would be nice) Edit videos either in Davinci Resolve/Hitfilm Express or Premiere, depends if I can get a student discount on Adobe Music production/messing around in FL Studio I'm somewhat convinced that I'm going to need at least a i7-7700HQ or i5-8300H, 16GB of RAM and a GTX 1060 to do this stuff, but I have a gut feeling that may be overkill for what I truly need. Also, apparently good battery life is a major concern when it comes to picking a college laptop, and I haven't found anything apart from the Inspiron 7567 that has good battery life and the specs that I think will work for me. Is battery life really that important in college? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi, I'm in grade 11 in high school and I'm currently taking Computer Science 20. For one of our final assessments, we're asked to find someone that works in any technological field and interview them about 15-ish questions. Is there anyone that is willing to spend around 15-20 minutes in a call or even just through a text channel just answering some questions? The only thing I'd need other than answers to the questions is your first and last name (a fake name can work if you'd prefer that too), the business/company you work for and the job title. I know info is a lot to ask for, so I'd like to thank you for your cooperation.

I'm a computer science major who is looking for a good laptop that can last for a long time. Price is not an issue because I have saved up a lot(lets say around 2500USD). I want to be able to surf the web, watch videos, and do homework for at least 6+ hours. I also want to at least game on mid to high with smooth frame rates or an option for thunderbolt 3 eGPU (eGPU preferred and battery life when gaming is unnecessary). It obviously needs to be portable and have good enough customer support and quality control. I was thinking about dual-booting a 15" MBP with windows but I'm not to familiar with IOS or dual-booting.
