Hello All, Following my last post, I managed to purchase the correct Motherboard needed to house my new Intel i5 9600K, I went for a ROG B390-H Strix Gaming. The standard clock speed for my CPU is 3.7Ghz, however, when booting my PC up I have noticed that even with the smallest loads (Chrome & iCue) the CPU seems to idle on Average at 4.4Ghz. (please see pictures below) Although I am aware K processors can be Overclocked, I have not overclocked mine and am worried that the CPU is being damaged. I recently format my PC after purchasing an SSD and have only downloaded NZXT CAM to monitor my temps etc... Can anyone give an advice on whether or not this is an issue or is normal for this type of processor. If it is an issue, what can I do to fix it? Kind Regards, Millsy

Hello I want a new computer, and I discovered something I have never seen before. I like to buy prebuilts from this one specific site, because you get a three year warranty and fast shipping. I found a computer with an i7 9700F CPU. I have heard It doesn't have an iGpu, which is not an issue for me, since it has an RTX 2070 SUPER. But that's all I know. Are there any other differences between the 9700F and the 9700/9700K? I don't think I need a 9700K since I'm not planning on doing any overclocking. Is it worth swapping out for something else? Hi! There are several videos and tutorials on how to make coffee lake cpus (8th gen) work on z170 motherboards (6th gen). I was wondering if it would work on a z170 motherboard which supports ddr3. I don't plan on building such a system (i7 2600k still serves me well), this is more a "What would happen?" question.

Hi there, I'm not sure if I'm just browsing through too many random horror stories, but it's definitelly wierd. I'll try to make the explanation quick. My colleague bought Asus ROG gl503vd laptop few moths back and I really liked it. I knew they were going to update that cool chassis with 8th gen Core i7-8750H processor, so I waited a bit. Last month I bought that baby and I really love the laptop. ...except, since pretty much day one, there is this scratchy high pitched noise comming out of it. It's not the harddrive, it's not the fan, it's comming most likely from CPU's PCB on the mother board. Whelp, I packed it, sent it to a local ASUS service center and it stayed there for three weeks. It came back with replaced motherboard (which also means a new processor in laptop terms) and the noise is still there. They wrote in the report that the noise was eliminated a little, but it's supposed to be a natural behaviour of the laptop and it's within tolerances as it's not louder than 10db. (I'd really love to know where they got that number.) Well I did my digging anyways and found out I'm definitely not alone in this. What's more interesting, people report exactly the same problems not only on other ASUS laoptops, but also on Dells, HPs, MSIs and even MacBooks. ...and there is often (not always, but very often) a one common detail. 8th gen Intel CPU. This is how my gl503ge sound: https://youtu.be/Ho_0b9IxuaM (before repair) There are few others: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIVJHgDCUSw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VbElCtHvOI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89INEtXhd7s (little lost in mic noise on this one) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEO3cn406Ig (this gui amplified it nicely, this choppy one is exactly what I have after the repair) And here are various topic across various manufacturers dealing with the same coil whine-ish issue. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ssrep9dqdmU https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/8ptfu8/would_you_accept_this_level_of_coil_whine_dell/ https://www.dell.com/community/Linux-Developer-Systems/New-Kaby-Lake-XPS-13-coil-whine/td-p/5088148/page/30 https://www.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/8zyuyx/is_anyone_noticing_coil_whine_noise_in_their_new/ https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/HP-Spectre-x360-8th-Gen-i7-Noise/td-p/6394376 https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/2018-mbp-15-coil-whine.2128494/page-2 (This guy exchanged 5 macbooks...) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGswmkw-yJA (Also I've joined this post of various gl503ge ang gl703ge users with the same issue: https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?103230-Asus-ROG-Strix-GL503GE-SCAR-wrong-ram-slot-scratchy-noise-cpu-always-on-max-clock) It's something that has to do with C1E power states as turning C1E off makes it mostly go away. (but also renders i7s power effciency useless) ...and when idling you can hear it mostly when CPU gets small bursts of work. Also unplugging the laptop from the wall makes it go away in lot of cases including mine. Is it possible that Intel screwed something up in Coffee Lakes and they make various PCB boards scream? Please help, because we often invested in over 1,2k USD laptops and we can't even sell them brand new, because they emit sounds like that. ...and manufacturers see it as a normal thing, so RMAs do not work either. Cheers, if you reed this, love ya, Linus, Martin.

Hi All, I am wondering if this is normal for this CPU? I did not overclock it in BIOS but it runs a higher frequency. At the time of taking the screenshot nothing except chrome was running. I noticed the multiplier is changing on its own every few seconds from x43 to x44. never used CPU-Z so i wanted to check if that's normal. Could it be because of XMP enabled in bios? But it should not touch my CPU afaik? What you think?

Hi, so as you may have known, my brother is looking to get a new PC for £400. To recap: He has a £300-£400 budget and is looking to only game, so his friends recommended an i3-8100 & GTX 1050 build list. The i3-8100 alone would be 30% of his budget so is Coffee Lake appropriate for a super-tight budget build like this? He's 15, barely knows anything about computer hardware, is in school, and has next to no money. Should he be looking into the possibility of a Ryzen 2200G system or even a used Haswell system? EDIT: I've just seen an i7-4790K + Gigabyte Z97 bundle going for £150 right now with 21h of bidding left, should I hop on that and snatch that combo for my brother if he were to go Haswell?

I'm starting a low cost build with an i3 8100 cpu which I see a deal for 98$ for it, It has become my understanding that Coffee Lake will drop in a month, and if so, Will the 8100 go lower in price? and by how much? What will the price of the 9th gen i3 be? Thanks in advance.

I am going to build a new PC ,have to decide between getting an i5-8600k now or getting an i5-9600k when it's released. Since the i5-9600k just has a 200MHz higher turbo clock(according to multiple leaks) than the i5-8600k, which can be easily made up by overclocking. Therefore , is it worth the wait? Help please

So i'm currently using the intel pentium g4560 and want to upgrade. Yes, i know that i'll also have to change the motherboard too. I managed to find a cheap b360 board so i don't mind. My question is since i'm on a super tight budget right now, should i just buy the i3 8100 and upgrade to i5 8400 in the future? Or should i just save up and keep the g4560 until i have enough money for the i5 8400?

Well, this is a little random, but it's from a legitimate source, so... https://twitter.com/Ashraf__Eassa/status/1029339603713581056 And thus the fabled Intel 14nm process gets another + after it. That makes 14nm+++. There was a rumor late last year that Whiskey Lake, the lower power part, would be on 14nm+++, so it does look like there will be another improvement cycle to the 14nm node. Cascade Lake is the next server release from Intel. It was scheduled for 14nm++, the same node as Coffee Lake, but it appears it has gotten even further enhancements from that. Cascade Lake-X will replace the Skylake-X line. Edit: Lenovo comes in for the confirmation. https://www.lenovo.com/gb/en/faqs/pc-life-faqs/intel-whiskey-lake-and-cascade-lake-processors/ My Thoughts: For as much of a disaster that 10nm has been for Intel to get out the door, their 14nm node is the "Little Node That Could". Makes for a harsh comparison between 14nm, which is reaching Legendary status, and 10nm that still isn't out the door and 3 years late. Edit 2: It gets worse. https://twitter.com/Ashraf__Eassa/status/1029440772213563393 All of the jokes about the + on the end of 14nm are going to get worse.

From two sources, this time: WCCFTech: Exclusive: Intel’s Desktop Roadmap 2018 to 2019 VideoCardz.net: Intel Core i9-9900K launches in Q3 2018 after all Pretty straight forward. Coffee Lake-S Refresh is in September. "Refresh" of X299 is in Oct/Nov, followed by the new A series Processors. My Thoughts: I really am amazed that Intel is bringing out the Xeon Platinum SKUs to the "High-end Desktop". But, what I'm excited for is the first person to delid what is clearly going to be a >4000USD A-series CPU. The Compensator clearly has a new CPU to work with later in the year.

Two questions: (1) In terms of gaming and future proofing, is it better to spend money on an 8th gen I5 or I7 CPU? I know the I5 CPUs are considerably cheaper than the I7s, but are games going to start utilizing the I7 CPU more than the I5s in the future? (2) For OCing, is there much of a difference in terms of gaming between the 8th gen I5 K series vs the I7 K series? I will be OCing on the more conservative side just to get my feet wet. Is there a reliable website or guide you guys can suggest to educate myself on OC? Thanks for you help and any suggestions.

Hey LMG community! Soooo listen, I entered Intel's 8086k giveaway sweepstakes during computex and it seems I won! However, to run the processor I'll very obviously need to upgrade from my z68/DDR3 era stuff. I am NOT an experienced overclocker and did not *purchase* the CPU (inb4 "U shud hav gotten a cheeeeper 1 dumdum) SO here's my question: will the 8086k still work/perform in a CHEAPER motherboard, ie an H370/B360/H310 chipset? I realize these chipsets DO NOT support overclocking, I am trying to get up and running for the lowest price possible and can save money with these cheaper boards IF they'd work. Pls, keep grouchy comments to yourself. TL;DR poor person won 8086k will it work in a h370/b360/h310 mobo?

So I just started comparing Intel and AMD budget builds by making spreadsheets and not relying on other's benchmarks. But now all the AMD chipsets and specs are done and the only things left are the INTEL Chipsets, and THEY ARE SO CONFUSING, cause I can't find them as a list or something like I found AMD's (or just knew them). And so I just want someone to list down or link me to a website that has ALL INTEL 8TH GEN CHIPSETS. And I also don't know the compatibility through INTEL Chipsets, but I understand all the AMD side. Hoping for a positive response, Basil EDIT: I AM NOT AN AMD FANBOY (it's really confusing to be one thses dayz tho)

I have a couple questions. I want a faster and better CPU. I have had some bad FPS with CPU Heavy games. Also, I would like to render videos and animations faster. I was thinking up upgrading to a good Coffee Lake processor. I was thinking of getting an i7 8700 (Costs less an I don't think I want to overclock.) My current CPU is an i5 6500. So here are my questions. How much could I sell my i5 6500 for? and can I upgrade from Sky Lake to Coffee Lake right now without buying any new parts other than the CPU. Current motherboard is MSI B150 Gaming M3. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I need to create a presentation on a subject of my choice for a job interview, and as you can tell, I've chosen Intel Coffee Lake. The interview needs to last 10 minutes, and the CEO who will be spectating my presentation has good knowledge on PCs so I can't miss anything out. I have a few questions to prepare for the interview: 1. What details should I be including for this presentation? eg. core count, die size, etc 2. I'm thinking of expanding my subject to Kaby Lake, what comparisons should I make between Kaby and Coffee Lake? 3. Is worth talking briefly about the previous generations in order as an introduction and then transitioning into Coffee Lake? 4. Is worth talking about overclocks? 5. Should I talk about Cannon Lake at some point? 6. What order should my information be presented in for my Google Slides presentation? Thank you all in advance for the help! Please gives as in-depth answers as you can, it will benefit me the most and get me higher chances of being chosen!

Hey all, my friend is a graphics designer. He needs a new laptop and he's very interested in the new xps 15 with coffee lake and a gtx 1050ti, he would like 4k and a super colour accurate display for around 2300 dollars. I'm not quite sure what to recommend. He has a wacom drawing pad that he uses and he doesn't have an issue with storage. He says 16 gig ram is preferable and an option for thunderbolt 3 to use his 1070 externally would be ideal. I thought maybe if he got an Asus gaming laptop with a 1070 and an 8750H for instance and used an external monitor for colour sensitive work that might be an option worth considering. What's your guys opinions?

Hey guys I got a great deal on an Alienware 17 R4 a few days ago. This is the 7700hq/GTX 1070 config. But I'm considering returning it and getting something with an 8750h/GTX 1060 instead for around the same price. Maybe the Alienware 17 R5. I'm thinking you could always upgrade the GPU later with the Graphics Amplifier external GPU. But CPU is soldered on MOBO so no upgrade ever. So I guess my question is, which of these will be better for gaming over the next 2-3 years? Should I keep my 17 R4 with the 7700hq/1070 or get something with an 8750h/GTX 1060 for the same price?

Hello all; I was looking to upgrade my CPU from an i5-6600 to an i5-8600. In regards to overclocking (for those who ask), I am not really interested in it, plus I have never overclocked before, and I don't think I will in the future, but if you have any suggestions I am happy to take notes. On to the subject, now. With the help of other members on this site, I came to the realization that my current motherboard (MSI H110M PRO-D) is not compatible with the new i5-8600 Coffee Lake CPU. I in-turn then would need a new motherboard, so I was looking at the GIGABYTE Z370 HD3 https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813145041&ignorebbr=1&_ga=2.145558324.1682513420.1527553033-204270038.1527015807 but to be honest I do not quite know what I am looking for in a MOBO and what the difference is between others are. If any of you have any suggestions, I am all ears (preferably something not top-tier in terms of pricing). My other question is, would this motherboard (or any suggested one) be compatible with all my other hardware, CPU cooler, Graphics card, case, ect? Thank you for the help and suggestions Also, if you need links to my hardware I can provide. CPU:Intel Core i5 6600 @ 3.30GHZRAM:16.0GB 2133 Dual-Channel (DDR4)Mother Board: MSI H110M PRO-D (MS-7996)Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GBCase: Thermaltake Core X31 Power Supply: EVGA 500 W1CPU cooler: Corsair Hydro Series Cooling H75

Hello All! I was looking to upgrade my Intel i5-6600 CPU to something a bit more powerful. I was originally looking at the Intel i7-7700k CPU because it can fit with my MOBO and plus it gives a considerable amount of more power. But I was also eyeing the i5-8400 Coffee Lake processor, but I would need to get a new motherboard with it. So is it worthwhile to spend a bit more and get the newer Coffee lake processor or does an older processor like the i7-7700k still a good choice for a CPU? Thanks, for the help an suggestions! Also here is my system: CPU:Intel Core i5 6600 @ 3.30GHZ RAM:16.0GB Dual-Channel (DDR4) Mother Board: MSI H110M PRO-D (MS-7996) Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB Case: Thermaltake Core X31 Power Supply: EVGA 500 W1 CPU cooler: Corsair Hydro Series Cooling H75
