Hi so i have a Seagate Barracuda 1TB HDD as my main boot and storage drive and i currenltly need it for a new system build. i have this spare 400GB seagate barracuda and i was wondering can i clone all the stuff in the 1TB drive over to the 400GB drive and use the 400GB as my new main drive? i only used 220GB of storage in my 1TB HDD so is it possible to move everything over to a smaller drive? thanks guys!

Seriously, I read this, I read that, this guy says to install Windows 7 with a clean installation, this guy says to use cloning software...seriously, I am so confused, and have spent my whole freakin' afternoon trying to get my SSD to simply function as a boot drive while retaining all of my drivers, games, etc. from my HDD. I tend to try to look up guides before I consult others, so this only adds to my frustration right now. I wouldn't be so mad if there wasn't so much confusion on what exactly it is you're supposed to do. I have a Samsung 850 EVO 120GB. Problems began when I tried to use the transfer software (name eludes me right now) and it would not let me select the Program Files to exclude my Steam folder. Long story short, I want to know what the hell I did wrong and/or if I need to boot off of my HDD again and have a clear guide on what I am supposed to do in order to have a smooth installation of Win 7 booting from my SSD. Hi all I want to upgrade my storage drive which is my D drive and I have cloned it all to a larger drive which is named F drive. What I want to know is if I can just swap the lettering of the drive and if everything will work just fine or do I need to do something else? Thanks in advance

Someone recommended using Macrium Reflect for cloning a drive in another post. I gave it a shot because the NTI Echo 3 software that came with my new Plextor m6 ssd wasn't working at all and I didn't feel like troubleshooting it. So to save time I went and downloaded Macrium, which worked great by the way. I don't know much about cloning drives so I hope someone would elaborate a bit. As I mentioned earlier I have a Plextor m6 I also have a Samsung PM830 which my main boot device and is a bit old. I wanted to clone my windows 10 onto the new Plextor drive and use the old samsung as a storage device since it will most likely fail in the coming year or two. I could put my games on it which I can always download again if the drive fails. I ran the macrium software and cloned my drive from the samsung onto the plextor. I noticed a big difference in the amount of free space on the plextor after I finished cloning. I didn't mention this earlier, but both drives are 256gb ssd and when I cloned the drive there's about a 22.3 GB difference in terms of space between the two drives. I'm not exactly sure what the reason for that is and I would love to format the samsung and use the plextor as my boot device, but I don't want to find out later that those 22.3 GB of data were important. Which brings me to my question, is it safe to format a drive on the same mobo after it has been cloned to another drive? They both share the same mobo. Please let me know your thoughts, opinions, jokes, what ever... thanks in advance LTT community!

So I ordered a new HDD and SSD because my other HDD is a bit old so I wanted to get a new one and get faster performance from the SSD (2Tb HDD and 120Gb SSD). The HDDs both were 2tbs. My plan was to clone the old HDD to the new one and then install the SSD and activate Intel Smart Response Technology after putting some programs on the SSD. I used the free version of Macrium Reflect and cloned the HDD without any problems. Then I plugged in the SSD and made sure in the BIOS it was connected. I didn't activate raid yet because I wanted to format the SSD and put some stuff on it. After I did that I went back to the BIOS and turned on RAID so that I could use Intel's Smart Response Technology. But when I saved and reset the HDD wouldn't boot. It gave me the error messgae: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DRIVE. I then turned RAID off and it booted correctly. I then unformatted the SSD and took everything off of it. And that's where I am now. I tried looking on forums and stuff but I didn't really understand them. I've never worked with cloning, SSDs, or RAID so I don't really know what i'm doing. Any help would be very appreciated. -
So I got a 240gb SSD, and am planning to put it in my desktop. However, I'm not sure what cloning software to use. My hard drive has less than 240GB worth of data on it right now so it won't be a problem that I can't clone it over. I want to use free software. What is a good one? I've used Macrium Reflect before, and the clone has worked fine, but when I checked the space used the space used on the SSD was always lower than that of the hard drive, which I always founded strange. Is that a problem, or is it fine to use Macrium Reflect. As well, why is this so? Thanks.

Hi there guys I'm currently running 2x 128GB ssd in Raid 0 and I'm now planning to upgrade to a 1tb Samsung 850 evo ssd just wanted to know if i can clone my 2x 128gb to the 1tb as that is where all my windows applications are stored. thanks for the help

So I'm gonna be upgrading my moms laptops hdd to an ssd. The ssd came with acronis true image hd but I'm confused on how to use it to clone the hard drive. I've heard you install the ssd first then clone the hdd to the ssd, but then where is the software located and what do you boot from? A step by step process would be greatly appreciated!

Hey guys, I've been trying to clone a HDD with MS-DOS installed on it with no avail. So far I've tried using Clonezilla. I am cloning from a 250GB IDE HDD to a 250GB SATA HDD if that makes any difference. However I am unable to boot off of the cloned disk, the contents appear identical however the space used is slightly off (a few mb at most). I have tried a few different options in clonezilla but all have had no success. Is there anything wrong I'm doing? Some details: - Using some ASUS motherboard with IDE/SATA port(s) so I can get the two drives connected - The original drive boots up MS-DOS with no issues. - I have also tried cloning to a larger size HDD (same result) I'm thinking that there might be some boot files that aren't copying or maybe clonezilla formats the new drive incorrectly, the content should be exact (bit for bit copy) by the space used is different (maybe this is normal). Any help in the right direction is much appreciated, thanks in advance! Regards, YoshiHDify

I am planning of putting an SSD in my build so it can boot faster and all the advantages of an SSD. But I want all the data off my hard drive especially the OS as I don't mind paying for a key. I heard that you can clone the hard drive but I have no idea how you can do it or what software to use. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

So i plan on getting a compatible msata for my laptop for school to make it a bit snappier, however im not sure of how to go about cloning the current hard drive over to it. Things like... do i need to format my msata any special way? is there good free cloning software (i saw acronis mentioned somewhere but i have no idea how to use it)? etc... If needed my laptop is the Acer V5 473p 5602

I currently have a 120GB crucial SSD and I'm going to be moving my system to a ITX size and the new motherboard for this build will have an M.2 slot on it. If I wanted to say get an M.2 SSD and use it as my boot drive for my OS (which is currently located on the aforementioned SSD) is there a way that I can clone my entire SSD (program, OS, files, etc) over to the M.2 drive so I won't have to go through the whole deal with reinstalling windows, programs, or possibly having to get my software keys reset?

Hey Techies, Apologies if this should be in the Operating System forum. I am upgrading my dads laptop, and one part of which includes an SSD upgrade. He has an old Hitatchi HDD of 320GB and I'm putting him in a Crucial BX200. I'm using my tower PC to do this, as I can hook up hard drives. I started with Acronis True Image, but once the cloning has started it required a restart which then attempted to boot into the source drive, which I can't do because the cloning is being done from my OS drive. So next I chose AOMEI. My issue here is when I clone the drive (and it works fine) it just says that the SSD is not bootable, even though the drive appears to be identical. Can anyone help me with this, I'll provide any screenshots as necessary.

So, I want to clone my laptop hard drive and want to put it in a ssd. I heard that it is not possible to clone hard drives anymore in Windows 10. Is that true? If so, is there anyways around it. P.S. I saw JayzTwocents clone a Windows 10 hard drive. Did he do something other than clone it? His Windows still works and there is no authentication problem.

So have been having trouble transferring data from my old Seagate 500 GB HDD to my new RAID 0 Adata SP550 SSD's. So far I have tried to clone the HDD to the SSDs using acronis true image but then when I try to boot off of them, it gives me a blue screen and says SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED. After that it will restart and try to do an auto repair but it fails. This might be unrelated but when my mother board is in RAID mode, the HDD that is not in RAID will not boot but when I am in AHCI, when I got to file explorer, it detects the SSDs as in RAID 0 and can read off of them but is not a bootable drive even though Acronis to clone the disks exactly and to keep all partitions the same. I have been going at it for a week and have finaly given up on figuring it out on my own. If you need pictures or my computer's specs, just ask. Thanks in advance -
So I have a 2TB HDD, along with a RAID 0 on my Aorus x5 that I want to backup. I am already doing periodic incremental and full backups. However, I wanted to make a clone just to be extra safe every week or so. I partitioned my 2TB, but all the backup software I've used including Acronis, Paragon, and Macrium Reflect have only been able to clone hdds to hdds, not hdds to partitions. Is there any software you know of that can do this, or maybe even do periodic clones. (maybe a 1TB partition, and every week clone the HDD, and delete the old clone). Any help would be great. Thanks

I purchased a Samsung 850 EVO and I got it today, and I already have a Kingston SSDNow 240GB SSD and I want to setup the Samsung has my boot/main drive and Kingston as extra storage. What software should I use and how should I clone the Kingston, and then transfer it to the Samsung and delete eveything off of the Kingston. Thanks!

Hi and Merry Christmas to all! So i have an asus G501 FHD version which as a HDD and m.2 SSD slot in it and installed a samsung evo 850 250GB m.2 ssd on it. After installing, i open This PC tab and found out that the ssd is not listed. However i downloaded the samsung migration software and it detects the SSD. My question is, what are the steps that i must do in order for me to transfer/clone my windows 10 OS from my 1TB HDD to my newly installed SSD. Which software should i use? (preferably free) . It the Samsung data migration software enough to to this task? I mean, would if fix everything for me like will my laptop automatically boot from the SSD and erase the windows 10 from the HDD? Will it also automatically copy the system recovery partitions etc? Sorry for asking so many questions, its just i'm scared that i might ruin my original windows 10 Thank you very much.

So I am trying to upgrade my Dell Inspiron 13 7000 Samsung 128 GB SSD to a Samsung 500 GB SSD. I had a USB 3.0 to SATA cable that came with a WD Black Squared but when trying to get the computer to see it (In Diskpart and Disk Managment is says "The Drive is not ready" so I made a backup of it using AOMEI Partition Assistant to a WD External Drive and then plugged the 500 GB SSD into my desktop where it could see it, put after moving all of the paritions and files over, it wouldn't boot, so I'm wondering if I can boot my desktop off of the 128 GB SSD and then use Samsungs migration software to make a clone or if there is another way I should do it. Thanks. (ignore my username and posts, I haven't been able to access my main account sense the force password change, so if anymore can help me with that too, i'd be great)

I have the macbook pro 2012 and I am using the stock hard drive. I want to wether it is okay to clone a hard drive to an ssd or should I just do a fresh install of Mac osx? Does cloning hard drive to ssd cause problems? If I have to do a fresh install I would just wait for osx el Capitan to come out and do a fresh install of that. What say?

I'm trying to swap out the 500gb drive in my HP Envy 14 1190-ea for a 120gb Kingston v300 SSD, but I'm having some troubles with data migration. On the 500gb drive is currently a clean install of Windows 10, so I am not really concerned about data loss. All migration programs that I have used have partitioned the SSD so that recovery, hp tools etc take up 16gb each, much larger than they would on the 500gb drive (on the 500gb drive they would take up a matter of mb only). I am trying to keep these partitions the same size as previous and to fill the remaining space with usable drive space for my programs, documents etc. Can anybody recommend anything I can use to 'clone' the drive with more control over how the partitions are transferred, or tell me how to achieve this? I'm a student so my budget for software is basically zero. Alternatively, could I simply install the SSD and reinstall Windows 10 from scratch? Would this mean I need a license key (I upgraded freely from Windows 7), and if so, where do I find this key? Many thanks.

I am looking into cloning my HDD to a new SSD, the SSD is large enough to fit all of my files so that won't be a problem. I have never done a drive cloning before so I would like some recommendations on some good drive cloning tools (preferably free) and a description on how to do it. I know this is kind of a newbie question but I hope you guys can help me out . I'm getting a 240gb drive from kingston btw.

I'm still learning how to service my own laptop - I don't want to have to buy Acronis, an external enclosure, another copy of Windows, just nothing. Period - I have the system recovery disks from my previous FutureShop laptop purchase - I have three HDDs: my laptop (boot and everything on it, NTFS), my external USB HDD (2 partitions: one for backups and one formatted; both NTFS), and an SSHD (needs reformatting) - The SSHD is going to replace my current drive The question is: How do I clone my laptop data onto my SSHD? For some reason my only route seems to be cloning my laptop HDD into a separate partition on my exHDD, booting off of the exHDD, again clone my data from that partition into SSHD but for some reason cloning happens on the physical drive, not the separate partition itself. Is there a solution around cloning to a separate partition? Or do I have to move everything on the exHDD back into the laptop HDD, format the exHDD into a single partition and clone from there?
