I have an old dell with a 320gb HDD that's failing. I want to throw in a new drive but I also want to keep all my programs, OS, setting, etc. Is cloning that drive still an option? If not can you please inform me of what I can do to move/keep my boot drive's data.

I'm going to upgrade my laptop hard drive and I want to clone my old drive to the new one, if I finish cloning and plug the new drive in my laptop do I have to reactivate my windows or other program?

Hello Everyone, I am planning to do a full Laptop Upgrade (Whats Permissible) of my University Provided Laptop (It cannot Run CAD Software.) Now I am Planning to upgrade my RAM from 4GB to 16GB (G.Skill Ripjaws ddr4 2133MHz, 2x8GB) and have bought the RAM. Also I have bought a Seagate Baracuda 2TB mechanical HDD and am Planning to swap it for my current 500GB HDD (Western Digital). I did not buy an SSD as my primary concern here is to have more storage capacity and not faster storage, so I went for the max I can get in 2.5" form factor (An M.2 SSD is also in the pipeline for speed). After Researching on the internet I basically found that a RAM Swap is pretty easy to carry out and for the HDD I can either clean install or Clone my current HDD. Now I am Planning to clone my current HDD (500GB) to my new HDD (2TB), and this is the procedure I will follow for the whole upgrade:- First Install New RAM and boot the computer while troubleshooting errors (if any occur). After a successful boot up, I will create an Acronis True Image 2017 Live CD (for cloning), a Windows 10 installation Media (for safety), and manually copy my most important files and Setups to a Pendrive or portable HDD (I only have Videos and Software mainly). I will Swap my old HDD for my new HDD, and connect my old HDD via a SATA-USB cable. (Acronis site says that for Laptops the new Disk should be inside the Laptop before cloning or the new disk would not be bootable, See attached Document). I will manually boot to the Acronis True Image 2017 Live CD, and start the cloning procedure. I will then Remove the old HDD connected and Boot the system normally, Hopefully everything works. Please Tell me if I am doing something wrong in this procedure or if I am missing any step. Also a printout of the attached Document will be with me for the whole procedure (please suggest other documents if you know of any, link of the attached Document, https://kb.acronis.com/content/2931) and please keep in mind while replying that I do not have access to unlimited Speedy Internet and cannot download large Setups in a jiffy. WHY DID I CHOOSE TO CLONE:- I chose to clone my current HDD as I have many softwares installed on my Laptop (CAD), for which I do not have the installation media or I Installed the software from a network installer (AutoCAD and Inventor), and installing the Software from Scratch would be a pain and a new project in itself. Which hard drive cloning software should i use?
-
This question is for all of those who use software on a routine basis to manage hard drives, by either copying/cloning, migrating from one size drive to another, using multiple operating systems, and backing up all files to images or otherwise. I am looking for the best utility in the industry, I am sick of having to resort to using multiple tools to accomplish what I try to do when it comes to managing hard drives for my clients. Basically, I use the Disk Management tool by Microsoft extensively, however it has it's limitations and does not do a hell of a lot when it comes to resizing, cloning, and etc. If I can't do what I'd like to do with DiskMan, I will use either Minitool Partition Wizard, or EaseUS Partition Master. I have also used Macrium Reflect (i like this one a lot), Acronis TrueImage, Norton Ghost (11.5 seems to be the best version), and even Carbon Copy Cloner and Super Duper! However, when it comes to migrating a certain size HDD that is larger than a destination SSD, I seem to have issues. Like for instance, I'm working on a clients Macbook pro and it only supports up to OSX 10.6.8 which is not only lame, but frustrating because I can't for the life of me get any of the clones working with any combination of utilities that I use. I do happen to have some hardware cloning tools, where I can put the master disk in the first slot and then the destination drive in the 2nd, then hit the clone button... but that doesn't work when the drive is smaller than the original drive. (I know I didn't put clonezilla on here but I just dont like it. I really don't dive deeply into too many Linux programs although I do use LCMint or Ubuntu a lot to recover data from 'failed' drives) That's where this post began to formulate in my head. Why not ask Linus and friends what they think is the best of the best when it comes to migrating larger sized hard drives to smaller ones (especially an OSX drive) There's a good chance that I'll finally get this working at some point, maybe even after I hit the post button... but either way, I think this would be a great discussion to have with all of you and i'm looking forward to hearing some of your input. Thank you very much, hope to hear from you soon!

hello there everyone. i'm new here so yay. ok im here cusim having a few problems and they might be too obvious but i want to know if there is another way. anyways, just got a 120gb ssd. i have a 1tb hdd and my everything is there but what i want to do is move the operating system from the hdd to the ssd. i went to MyPc and went to properties for the C: drive and i see that there is 558gb used space. to my assumption, thats a little to much to move from the hdd to ssd. all i want to do tho is move the operating system from the hdd to the ssd. please, what something i have to do to accomplish this. ive cloned a whole hdd to a new hdd but never had to migrate the OS from a 1tb hdd to a much smaller SSD. please if someone doesnt mind helping me out with my little problem. please and thank yous.

hi, i'm using macrium to try and clone my ssd to m.2 drive. I was able to clone from HDD to SSD before when I first upgraded to windows 10 and now it doesn't seem to be working for some reason. The drive appears to be cloned, but when I try to boot from it nothing happens. I get kicked into BIOS and am forced to boot from my SSD instead of the m.2. When I look in disk management the m.2 drive has all the data on it, but it doesn't say that it's boot, crash dump, primary partition like my current drive does. Is this some sort of Windows 10 sorcery I don't know about or did I just botch up the cloning process? Your thoughts?

So, to start this off, I'll be building a new mid range gaming pc this fall/winter. And I'l only have access to this laptop till early September. I of course don't want to buy a whole new windows 10 license for my new computer, and would like to backup/clone/migrate this OS on my laptop over, even when I won't have both devices in the same time frame. I've researched it a little, and it seems like making a backup image then booting off of that, and restoring from a system image seems the best way, but I only saw this for windows 7. Any help?

TLDR: Capture card @60hz / Monitor @75hz When cloned, both are at @60hz How to clone without limiting monitor hz? Long Story: So I recently set up a Stream PC to help me out with, well, streaming... After MUCH troubleshooting (Try running a finicky USB 3 capture card on a gen-1 i7 system through a 3.0 riser card with hacked drivers... would not recommend), I FINALLY got a signal. Issue is I'm running a 75hz LG monitor over HDMI, and a second off of DVI. The only way I managed to get a signal in to the capture card was through my second DVI port with a DVI>HDMI converter. ***However, doing so requires cloning my monitor and the capture card as one monitor... limiting it at 60hz.*** Does anyone know a way to clone my monitor without limiting the refresh rate? The HDMI pass-through won't work for me for a number of reasons, so please, I would appreciate a software/1st PC solution! :3 (TY) PC 1: i7 3770k / GTX 970 PC 2: i7 870 / GTX 750Ti / Avermedia Game Capture Extreme

Hello, I need a recommendation for a good and robust hdd cloning program for less than 100 usd (cheaper or free is nice but a more robust program would be worth the cost.). My friend needs his old laptop cloned as the old one has a cracked screen and he needs to preserve his programs for his new laptop. Being able to copy the old installs of the programs and software to the new laptop would be nice, but I do not know how to do that and input on the feasibility of this path would be nice. Thanks for reading.

yo The harddrive on my old Macbook is nearing the end of its life, and Apple is replacing it for me. Apple is too dumb to know how to clone my drive, so they want me to do data transfer myself. Too bad because I'm dumber than Apple and can't find a way to clone both my Mac OS partition, and my Bootcamp'ed Windows 7 partition to a new drive. I need to copy the entire drive, bit for bit, including all partitions, onto a hard drive that I own, so I can reclone it back to the new drive they install. How can I do this. Any free options? I feel like this should be a simple task? thx

So I have an old system with a fried mobo, a laptop, an empty, and some external drive enclosures and I was wondering if I could just cut and paste everything from one drive to the other on the laptop and still have the windows work on the new drive. Thanks in advance for responding!

Hello everyone! I come to you today with a question. What cloning software is the best for cloning and old failing HDD to a new HDD? My buddy has a failing drive, and we need to clone it over fast. I do not want to just reinstall everything because this is a pre-built acer machine and for some god-awful reason, some of the main components are on both the HDD and SSD. (I am sure it is common and I am just a fool) So to the main attraction, suggestions on what software to use. I am ready for free options hopefully, but if need be (i.e. Free options do not offer what I need) I will accept paid options as well. But more than just that, I also need to know what to look for in this software. Best components, ease of use, certain features to look for? I appreciate all the help I can get! As always there will be much praise for any and all!

Currently I have the following boot drives in my PCs: Desktop (Windows 10) - 1TB Samsung 850 Pro 2.5 inch SATA SSD Laptop #1 (Windows 10) - 500 GB Samsung 850 Evo 2.5 inch SATA SSD Laptop#2 (Windows 10) - 1 TB Mechanical HDD original hard drive when laptop was purchased I am planning to purchase a 500 GB M.2 SSD to replace the 2.5 inch SATA SSD currently in my desktop as the boot drive. The 1 TB 2.5 inch SSD will then go in to Laptop #1. And finally the 500 GB Evo SSD presently in Laptop #1 I intend to put into Laptop #2 as a replacement for the 1 TB mechanical HDD. I am a little unsure about how to proceed with this. I know that I will need to use Acronis True Image or some other similar cloning software and really would like to avoid having to do Windows 10 clean installs on any of my computers. Any advice on how to go about this project would be appreciated.

So, I bought the hyperX savage 240GB SSD by kingston. Installed their included cloning software (Acronis) and proceeded with cloning. After the cloning, I get 3 partitions. first a partition with 1.55GB in it, the second one, which is an exact copy of the drive that I am cloning, and the remainder of the GBs goes into a recovery partition. Am I doing something wrong? Any solutions to this?

Hi, I recently bought a m.2 1TB SSD and want to use it to replace my old secondary 1TB HDD. My os is installed on a primary 250GB SSD. Can someone guide me through the steps to clone my hdd to my new ssd? I'm not familiar with terms like partition so the simpler the better. For info, I can see that my new SSD is unallocated in disk management (I don't know what that means but for some of you I think it will). I also want to use my old hdd for picture storage and stuff that I won't open often after the cloning. Thanks in advance for you help, Jaeger

Hello. I will try to make this question as uncomplicated as possible, but I have a 2.5" 500GB Seagate SSHD that I would like to clone off of a 2.5" 1TB Hitachi drive. I already know that you can't clone a drive of smaller capacity from a bigger one, but I wanted to clone a certain partition on the 1TB drive. Would this be possible? (Partition I would like to clone is (New Volume D:) Here's a picture of my screen. (At the time, my 500GB drive was not connected, so it does not register. Ignore Disk 1 Also I don't have the largest budget for cloning software, so a free one would be nice. Thanks!!!!

Hi, Thinking of upgrading my second drive and was wondering what actually is the right way of performing the disk clone? The cloning software from the new drive manufacturer is only intended to operate on Boot drives, so what can I use in my case? If it helps: I'd be going from a WD Green 2TB to a Samsung QVO 2TB. Thanks!

OS: Windows 8.1 64 bit Specs: HP Envy m6-1125dx Intel Core i5-3210M , 8gb dual channel DDR3 @ 798 MHz RAM, Crucial MX500 256gb SSD (new, actually 232gb), no audio card detected (from speccy) Recently I cloned my laptop's old hard drive to a new Crucial MX500 250gb SSD using Acronis True Image. After quite some troubles, I finally got it to work, but some of my drivers don't work (the most important one being my HD audio driver which doesn't recognize the 3.5mm jack nor the integrated speakers). I attempted to go to the HP website to download the HD Audio Driver, but after installation and restarting it nothing happened. Intel Driver and support assistant did not help either. When I click troubleshoot for audio issues, it doesn't do anything either. It only says "Hardware changes might not have been detected" and then all I can do is close the troubleshooter. When I take a look at playback devices and turn on disable devices, it states "no audio devices are installed". I have a screenshot that shows the device status from device manager. Anyone got any solutions for me? I'd like to be able to plug in some earbuds to my 3.5mm jack.

Hi all, I finally got around to installing an SATA m.2 drive into my girlfriend's laptop and got everything cloned over no problem. The issue I am having is I forgot to make the documents folder on the hdd before moving it back over. Right now the quick access and the This PC documents folder just go to the root of the drive not the documents folder itself. When I try moving it into the folder that I made for the documents is giving me "Can't redirect a parent into a child. The specified path is invalid." I have also tried restoring to default (C:\user\user name\Documents) and I get "Failed to build the list of regular subdirectories under D:\System Volume Information. Access is denied." The D drive is the hdd that came with it that I formatted before trying to move everything over. Any help is much appreciated as she has school work that needs to be done today!

This is like my third post, but I'm cloning partitions to my 500GB Seagate SSHD, and when I try to clone the Recovery partition on my main drive, it says "Not enough space". Its only a 1gb partition, but I have 5GB free for that partition. I'm using Macrium Reflect. Could this be a permission error, or could it be a compatibility error? Please help.

I have already googled and tried solutions I have found but so far nothing works. Anyway, here's my problem:My device is an Acer V3-575G. I replaced by DVD Drive with an SSD in hopes of better performance (my laptop has 1TB HDD). I cloned my system from the HDD to the SSD using EaseUS Todo Backup successfully. I checked in File Manager and Computer Management and yes, the system was successfully cloned into the SSD. When I was going to arrange the boot sequence to prioritize the SSD however, it was not on the list in Boot Options. I tried to change the Boot Settings from UEFI to Legacy as some suggested it on google to make missing drives appear in Boot Options. However, the SSD still does not appear on the list and my laptop fails to load into Windows, instead showing a black screen saying something like "No bootable device connected. Connect device and press any key to continue." So I was forced to set the Boot Settings to UEFI again and the laptop successfully booted up.The next step I did was remove the HDD from the laptop to force it to boot from the SSD, and it worked!! It booted up successfully and I checked the Boot Options and there it was -- the SSD! So I reinserted my HDD and turned on the laptop. It again booted up successfully however, the SSD was missing from the Boot Options again! At this point, I knew that my laptop can boot from the SSD. Hence the next step I did was clean (delete the volumes) the HDD using Computer Management. Then I restarted the laptop successfully, meaning the laptop MUST boot from the SSD, right??? BUT when I checked the Boot Options, the SSD IS STILL NOT THERE. I am completely out of ideas what to do, except maybe update my laptop's BIOS? Will that help?Thank you in advance for your interest and help!! I'd sure appreciate your suggestions

I will try to make this as simple a question as possible, but I have a 1TB Hitachi 2.5" HDD that I have partitioned with files that I would like to transfer to a Seagate 2.5" 500GB SSHD. I know that the Seagate drive is a smaller capacity, but I was wondering if I could clone one specific partition with system and personal files, being the partition is 364 GB. (As of the time of the post, I am currently transferring the files to the partition) Any help would be appreciated, here's a picture below (D: is the partition I want to transfer). A free software would be preferable, as I don't have the largest budget for software.
