hello all, I was hoping I could get some insight into a particular laptop choice. I need to buy a new laptop as mine is undergoing a slow death. I however have a little eclectic mix of needs. I will be going off to college in about a year so I am looking at something relatively portable for then. I also got an early taste for taking notes on a laptop/tablet hybrid back in like 2007 as part of my schools technology initiative. As laptops with real pens kind of disappeared for a while, I haven't had a real chance to do so since but would like it for college as I know it makes me more organized (with onenote) and efficient. so I am mainly looking at 2 in 1s with decent pen support. However I am going to be studying mechanical engineering so I will need to use solidworks (CAD program) at least somewhat. I would also not mind doing some light gaming (probably nothing more than the remastered skyrim) if I happen to have time. So I have been looking at 15inch models as they tend to have discrete graphics cards. so I have been mainly looking at the just updated 15in spectre x360 which comes with the just released quad core i7-8550u as well as 16gb ram, and nvidia geforce mx150 (with 2gb gddr5) the other competitor I've mainly seen is the Lenovo yoga 720 15 in which surprisingly has a quad core i7-7700hq and an nvdia gtx1050 (with 2gb gddr5) packed in there with equivalent ram options. any particular thoughts between these two or other options? Or are some of my assumptions wrong and I should be looking elsewhere? Lastly is it worth waiting till Intel releases its 8th Gen in the hq package size before making a choice? sorry for the somewhat long winded explanation but would welcome some help

Hello... So a friend of mine asked me to part and build him a PC which would mainly be used for AutoCAD and sometimes Arduino, Basic, C++ Programing... I built a bunch of PCs before but all of them were for gamers and i have never eaven parted out a pc for CAD and programming so any help is appriciated... I read a lot of different informations around the internet but from what i found out that CAD mostly uses single core performance and while he will not be gaming on this machine i came to realise i should put a quadro card... Lets begin with the graphic card... So as i mentioned i built pcs for gaming so my first thought was like ill put a gtx 1060 in and all good but while i was reading i found out how much better of a performance he would get from a qudro card... So the card in the budget range are the p600, p1000 and p2000 and here i need help which one and why ofcourse the cheaper the better and all deppens on price/performance... For the cpu im preety set on the i5 8400 couse the boost clock of 4.0 gives me almost the i7 7700k performance for literaly half the price but if you have any suggestion they are more than welcome... For the Motherboard i will probably have to go with the Matična ploča ASROCK Z370 Pro4 becouse only one shop in my country has lga 1151 v2 and they only have z370 and this is the cheapest one... Next ram Probably 16GB and if needed later upgrade to 32 GB... Storage i will see what size ssd fits in the budget + 1 or 2 tb hard drive And the Case and PSU not important right now i will chose it later... So like 900$ for GPU,CPU,MB,RAM and storage... Thanks to anyone who helps <3 David

Hey all! I failed to buy a reliable laptop the past 2 times, where 1 just wasn't a good build (MSI GT70) and my current laptop (ASUS U501UX) has such a horrible display, it's useless for any color work. So I'm hoping you guys can help I'll be mainly using the Office Suite, various Adobe programs (mainly Photoshop) and CAD software (Solidworks). So I'm looking for a laptop with pretty good specs (i5/i7 and maybe a dedicated GPU, not sure how much difference that makes), but especially: - A good display (Full HD is fine, color accuracy is more important) - Solid build (it will be carried around daily, and sometimes used in the train) I would also like an SSD and a HDD, but I understand that maybe only an SSD is possible. It should be fine as I have a portable harddrive anyway. Budget: Preferrably under 1000 euros I am also looking into buying used, so recommending older models is fine too! So far I fell in love with the XPS 15, but it's kind of out of my preffered price range. All suggestions are very much appreciated!!! -Kaasgeelheid

Alright, I have been looking for a suitable replacement for my beloved MacBook Air, which is dying as I type this. I need a laptop that is capable of 1080p gaming at high settings, but also run CAD like Autodesk Inventor. So far, I have settled on the Aero 15 for its battery life, understated looks, display, GTX 1060, and upgradability. I plan on having XoticPC upgrade the ssd to a 960 evo 512gb. I would like to hear from Aero 14/15 owners on how their experience has been, if there is any throttling, build quality (say what you want about apple, but their build quality is stellar, and i dont want to downgrade too much), how reliable the laptops are, if you've had to deal with gigabyte support, and if there is anything else i should know about the laptop. I would also like to hear from people who have bought from XoticPC, how the support is, quality of service, etc. I know someone will tell me to build a desktop, so I will address that right now. I need a laptop to take to school and for CAD. A desktop wont do that. I need to take the full performance with me. So please, share with me your thoughts on the aero 15 and XoticPC.

Completely new to the world of PC building and looking for a push in the right direction towards a build that would be primarily focused on both CAD work, 3D modeling, and heavy rendering. As stated I have a budget of $3,000 (not including peripherals/accessories etc) and I have no real preference yet over certain brands of cpus; like I said I'm very new to this. Gaming isn't a big focus with this build, as anything I'd be doing in that field would be extremely light. Any input or nudges towards what I should be looking for in my build would be much appreciated. I'm located here in Southern California and only need to include the computer itself in the budget. Thanks!

Being a Mac guy (helping out a friend) and venturing into the water of Windows machines I am leery of buying a prebuilt machine. That being said, I am not sure the work load requires going through the trouble of building from scratch. AutoDesk says the system requirements for CAD & Revit are basically, "Highest affordable CPU speed rating recommended" and the RAM needs to be no less than 4GB. The video card is more specific. They only list 5 cards that are "Certified" to work with this version of Revit. AMD Radeon Pro WX 2100 AMD Radeon Pro WX 3100 Radeon Pro WX 4100 Radeon Pro WX 5100 Radeon Pro WX 7100 Beyond that, the standard stuff would be needed, 250GB SSD, maybe a 1TB second drive. Any ideas on a prebuilt machine with one of those video cards? Or a build list to make one? Budget for either must be at or below $1300

I was wondering if anyone knew any good guides to building something that would run software like Solidworks, Rhino, Fusion, and Keyshot. I want to build something but it would be more on a budget. I was aiming around $750USD but I can budge if I need to. As far as I know so far, CPU with a good core count is good as well as good amount of RAM. I could be wrong, this is why I am asking.

Hello LTT world, Ive seen many a review and suggestion for "workstation" builds but from what I understand they all* focus on programs optimized for parallel processing. As a mechanical designer by trade I am frequently stuck with an already built "top of the line" pc with 8 cores, 16gb of ram, am Nvidia Quadro 4000 and a frozen program with one core redlining while the 7 others idle. I've used Nvidia's gpu utilization program and that thing barely hits 70%. So my understanding is this, CPU clock speed trumps cores and unless you're using 8 year old quadros, you have enough VRAM. Does anyone have any input or suggestions regarding this? Best regards, The goaty one

Good day all I've been scurring around the internet looking for a good choice of a laptop to use in University. I will be studying engineering, so CAD and possibly other heavy programs will be used. My budget is as much as I need to pay to get through university. (max 2500 though...) (and rather less than more) So this is what I came up with for requirements. It needs to have decent specs to last me my university career (5 years at least). It needs to have build quality that will last me those years and serve me well. + A good keyboard to write essays on. It needs to have good-great battery life, so I don't need to look for a charger all day. Spec list I searched for: -Quad core i7 -GTX 1050 or better -FHD 1080p screen (sharp enough, and saves battery life) (preferably IPS) -12GB ram+ These are some models I came up with, with pros and cons. (All have been reviewed by Linus, I'll add links) Dell Inspiron 7567 Review +Great specs for a cheap price (i7 Quad core, 1050ti, 16GB ram, 1080p screen (TN though)) at €1200 +Not too flashy design (although still gamery) +Decent build quality -Not really thin (1 inch/25mm) -TN panel (Fixed with 4k option for €1379, but then even less battery life) -74Wh battery -No USB-C or thunderbolt Dell XPS 15 9560 Review +Super thin and small for a 15 inch pc +LARGE battery (97Wh) +1080p ips panel +Thunderbolt +i7, 16GB ram, 512GB pci-e ssd +Nice build quality and aesthetics! +DBrand skin available -Gtx 1050 -price (€1800) Razer Blade 14" Late 2016 Review +Own choice of Linus Sebastion for the crew +All the specs (Core i7, 16GB ram, 1080p ips display, GTX 1060) +Still quite thin (18mm) +Thunderbolt +Dbrand skins available -256GB SSD (fixed with the 512GB model for 2500€) -price (2200€) -70Wh battery -Not officially available in Belgium, need to import it through Germany (so, idk about warranty) I might have missed an alternative in the style of the XPS 15 with a 1050ti for about the same price, or in the style of the razer with a better price tag, or which is available in Belgium... But I couldn't find it. Now I'm thinking about just getting the Dell inspiron. It's the inferior machine, but the hardware is good enough, and it's lacking not much except the ips display for a good price. Migh just get the 4k option just to get IPS though. If anyone has a better/other option I should be considering, or an opinion of which of these I should buy I would be really glad to hear it! (Sorry for the long post, I just already did some homework, and I wanted to share what I came up with). Greetings Reds Duty

I am currently on the market for a laptop for college. Main uses include word processing, CAD (Autodesk Revit, SketchUp, etc.) and maybe light gaming. My budget is $1800 and I would like to have on that's moderately portable with decent battery life of about 6-7 hours. I have already looked at the Asus GL502VS and VM, the MSi GS63VR, and the Aero 14. I would also like to avoid buying it from outside retailers (XoticPC, Origin). Any recommendations?

Hey guys, I wanted to know if this build would be the best for my price point of 1400$ CAD and if there would be anything you guys would change:https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/8VNHM8 I'll mostly be playing fps, some Esports games, and MMORPGs (DOOM, GTA5, LoL, BDO, OverWatch, and the more recent Call of Duty games). I will be playing on a 1080p 60hz monitor:https://www.acer.com/ac/en/AU/content/model/UM.HW3SA.001 -OS should be included in the budget -no peripherals, I already have them its the cm storm combo with a headset I'm going to need this PC to last a while and that will perform exceptionally well for all games. Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

I'm a huge Ultimate Frisbee fan. If any of you has ever played you'll know how dirty you can get after a game, and so does the disc. To not have to put a dirty disc inside my bag I made a clip that allows you to attach a disc to the outside of your bag. As a first year engineering student I didn't have a whole lot of experience with CAD, regardless I just gave it a try anyway. The program I used was Solidworks. It's the one they teach us how to use but you could also use Fusion 360 (which is free). First I designed the "cross-section" then extruded it. Then I rendered it and tried to imagine how it'd look like irl. (emphasis on 'tried' as I had no dimensions the disc but the height, I had to estimate a lot and expected to have to improve the model a few times) I don't personally own a 3D printer so I went to 3dhubs to find someone to print it for me. Looking to buy a 3D printer at some point, open for suggestions. In the end I was pretty happy with the result. Perfect fit the first time, so glad I didn't have to go back to change the model and reprint it. The print was made of PLA, not sure whether that's the best material but the dude I contracted assured me it was just fine. I had tons of fun making this and gained a lot of experience. I'm this won't be the last project. PS: Please make a CAD/ 3D printing Forum, surely other people will also like sharing their experiences

I was looking for a new pair of headphones for my computer, but I just bought my new mouse and keyboard. So I wanted to keep it under $100 CAD. I listen to electro and dubstep music. Also the colour scheme of my computer is red and black. Try to work around that.

Hi Everyone New here but just wanted to get people opinions on a small business workstation build. If anyone has any alternatives or better ideas I would love to hear them! Not built something for this use before so if anyone has and has some insight that would help a lot! What will be the main use? Main use for this PC will be every day office tasks, a lot of spreadsheets and document writing, along with email and web browsing. It will also be used for CAD using autodesk inventor and content creation using Inkscape, gimp, photoshop, Illustrator, Lightroom and premiere pro. Basically it needs to do everything at a reasonable pace but will never be used for gaming. Budget: I would like to keep this sub £2500 (4220 CAD according to DDG) The Monitor: This is one thing I'm really not sure on, I have gone with 27" 1440 as I've heard that unless you go 40" with 4k then stuff like spreadsheets and document writing can become hard on the eyes. Also any video editing will be 1080 (along with 2k go pro and scaled down) for the foreseeable. 100%sRGB is good, don't really want to splash out for 100% Adobe RGB, unless you disagree with this and its more useful than I realise? MOBO: ASrock X370 TaiChi CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 1700 (Looking for a 3.8 - 3.9ghz overclock if stable) BOOT DRIVE: 250gb Samsung 960 EVO PCIe M.2 STORAGE: 1TB Samsung 850 EVO SATAIII GPU: Sapphire RX580 Pulse 8GB RAM: 32GB Corsair DDR4 Vengeance 3000mhz PSU: 650w EVGA G3 Modular CASE: BeQuiet! Pure Base 600 Mid COOLING: BeQuiet! 280mm silent AIO w/ Arctic MX-4 Thermal MONITOR: 27" Asus MX27AQ OS: Windows 10 Pro Thanks for any help!

Hello everyone, I realized a low cost configuration for a pc that must be strictly used for: office programs, web browsing, edit small jobs in AutoCad and that must be efficient and robust. I hope that this: https://it.pcpartpicker.com/list/VKkRr7 is quite appropriate, in my opinion too much, thinking about the use that will be made of it. To stay on a low budget, and always considering the use, I wanted to choose for a low-cost video card. I wanted to ask your opinion, do you think it is better to buy a used Nvidia Quadro 2000, around 54€, or is it preferable to buy a recent Geforce like the GT 710 or GT 1030? Although old, the Quadro 2000 drivers date back to 2017.9.25 and I thought it could be better overall for the software, but I'm not sure. Please let me know what you think about it. Thank you!

Is this site http://www.performance-pcs.com/ listing the prices in CAD currency or is it USD? I really don't know but if it's US it would be wayyyy overpriced. Btw I live in Canada

Hello all! I'm wondering what the differences in performance would be between these two processors in CAD programs (specifically, I will be using NX and Catia). I won't be using this all day as a full workstation, but will use cad frequently, and will game as well (which both processors handle fine ). Also keep in mind that I would like to keep the whole system for 5 years (I will likely upgrade the GPU at some point in there). I am currently planning on the i7, but wondering if I can get away with the i5. I will wait to see Zen before I make any purchases, but if it turns out subpar, I need to know if I can get away with the i5 or if I need the i7. Other relevant components of build: Asus Z-170A RX480 8GB (Sapphire Nitro+) 16GB RAM Thanks for your time!

Hello LTT forums, There is this wonderful gentleman that does CAD (mainly on sketchup then to lumion and so forth), but I saw his rig and felt its update is long overdue. According to him, the rig was pre-built but he water-cooled it. This is his current rig: Windows 7 Pro (For some reason he declined the free upgrade) Core i7 - 3770 (Water-cooled, I wasn't able to take it apart, it reads "Thermaltake" faintly and the radiator(?) is mounted on a hdd rack) 32 GB RAM 2x Asus GTX 660s in SLI (4 Gb vram) Asus Maximus V Extreme Mobo Thermaltake 1375W PSU (And a crap ton of HDDs strangely not in RAID) He also has a BOXX PC (pre-built) with a 980 in it as a render farm. I thought his current rig could use a GPU upgrade (and drop the SLI), RAM seems to be sufficient and the PSU could take a CPU upgrade(?). Considering the watercooling loop I was thinking it could take way more than a i7-3770. Any suggestions are welcome, I am quite new to this. Tentative Tom Thanks for the reminder: budget upwards of 700 to 1000 USD

Engineering Student Laptop ~$1500- 2000 AUD
Ramke_99 posted a topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
okay, so I'm starting year 12 and going into uni to do engineering and I need a laptop which will be able to last me most of this time. I am willing to spend about 1500 - 2000 if it has the specs and recommendations to back it up. I'm looking for a light (sub 1.5 kg) laptop with a 13" screen (to easily fit in carry bag/ backpack ). core i5, or i7 processor, a minimum of 256gb ssd, able to comfortably be able to do CAD/ 3D design and survive an 8 hour or more day. It would also be benificial to not have to be replaced for 4/5 years if possible... provided battery doesn't die in the meantime I'm assuming I'm going to have to go with and ultrabook of some description. does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations. all replies are appreciated and will be taken into consideration. -
Hi everyone, new to the forum. I need a new ultrabook for school/university. I want something with a 14" screen, 1080p is fine. An i5 or better and 8gb of ram or better. I need it to be thin and light so I can easily fit it in my bag and I would like a semi decent gpu, something like a 960 or 970 so that I can do CAD work on it without it slowing down. Aesthetics are important and my budget is £1000 but I'm open to suggestions that are more expensive or less expensive. Cheers for the help ?

Hey guys, Our custodial/maintenance department at work needs the ability to view AutoCAD files, with ideally some basic (or advanced, but that's just a bonus) editing abilities. This needs to be free. Anyone got any suggestions? Basically as long as we can view the AutoCAD "drawings" or whatever, that's the main objective. Doing basic editing would be a benefit. Doing advanced editing would be a bonus.

I just was this http://www.ebay.ca/itm/182348726794?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT and I think it's a very good deal. It doesn't come with a SSD, so +300 for ssd and Windows 10. It will be supporting a pg348q, which is 3440x1440p 100hz g-sync IPS monitor. Can I have more power for my money for a 1200$ budget (without the monitor and including taxes, though there is no taxes on ebay)?

I'm currently in the market to buy a new windows 10 laptop. I want touch screen laptop. 4k is not a requirement for me but the problem is most laptop has touch screen only with 4k and not FHD. I will be purchasing a new laptop by the end of January 2017. I want this to be a investment so, I'm kind of confused right now. I will be using it for my college, and will be travelling with it too. So, I'm considering dell xps 15, razer blade( can be a choice but it only has 14'' screen ). I want a 15.6'' one atleast with good customer service. Dell has good customer service as I have been there customer for quite a long time, I know about them so, can't decide whether to check some other company or not. I'm basically waiting for kaby lake 7th gen quad core processors to launch. They will launch around the end of Decemeber with new laptops coming in January. I'm purchasing a new laptop that is why I want the best thing available even if I have to wait some time for kaby laks laptops. What kind of suggestions do you have for me ?
