Hey guys, planning a new build for about 13-1400 candadian for gaming and CAD design. I'm not doing the design proffessionaly or even at a high level, just learning it as a hobby. Currently using blender and fusion 360. I game at 144 hz 1080p. Not sure if I should use a 3700x with a 5600xt OR a 3600 with a 2060 super. I don't know how much of a difference between the 3700x and 3600 there is for CAD and if using the GPU to render would make up for it. Which should I use? EDIT: the 3600 combo is much cheaper so I can fit in a 1tb NVME drive as opposed to 250 gb NVME with a 1tb HDD, as well as some fans for better airflow

Hi guys, I’ve been planning to build my second computer for a couple months now and was trying to find tutorials on how to model a PC build using Blender, SolidWorks, or any other software, as I’m planning on building a dark purple-pink themed “outer space” theme build (similar to Nebula, Jayztwocents’ personal build). I've got a parts list in mind but was hoping I could create a mock-up before actually buying any parts to see how things turned out, and make any necessary modifications. If anyone knows where I can find some videos, forums, or other information, or even have parts suggestions to match my theme that would we awesome. Thanks

Budget (including currency): USD Preferred Range 1800-2000| Hard Cap 2500 Country: United States Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Non-Games: Fusion 360; SolidWorks; Blender; Premier Pro and other Adobe Creative Cloud Products; PrusaSlicer, Simplify 3D, Cura Games: RuneScape; SC2; Civ 6; Stellaris | Upcoming: Star Citizen(Maybe lol) and Chronicles of Elyria Expected Build Time-Frame: Late August 2020; potentially waiting slightly longer to allow for new product releases / price drops due to new product releases. Other details : Background: I just want to start out by saying I totally understand that gaming and editing machines don’t mix well. While I would want to maintain the ability to game comfortably, you’ll note from the games I play that it is not as primary of a feature of what I would like to accomplish with this. I currently use a 4-display setup with 2 being 1920x1080 and 2 being 3840 x 2160 I do not remember the models as I am cross country currently from my setup. 4k gaming is not very important to me but would be nice to do as currently I can still only go up to 1080 in games even on the 4k monitors due to the lack of strength in the current system. The primary intent of this machine will to create an editing/production machine for creating video and editing 3D files for content creation and 3D Printing. Videos will be working with 4k 60 FPS RAW and exporting in 1080 Primarily and 4k if possible. I am generally happy with the build below but would like general feedback/constructive criticism and help on the local storage solution: To the actual point of the post: I would like to ensure local redundancy with RAID as I have had drives fail in the past and while data was recovered or backed up externally, it was a headache to get up and running again with any type of speed. I will be getting a NAS in the future (Q1 2021) and have plenty of external storage right now to hold me over until that point. In the list I intend to us the M.2 for a boot and main program drive; and the HDDs in RAID 6 to allow 4 TB of usable space with two redundancy. As I have found again and again hardware RAID is recommended over software and is essentially necessary for RAID 6. However, I worry about write speeds with RAID 6 especially since I am having a hard time vetting a RAID controller as much of the information seems to be older. The Questions: What RAID controller would those with the knowledge recommend? Is RAID 6 overkill in a local machine? Is it even possible? Does AMD hinder this in any way and should I look to Intel? Hi. I've become an expert at choosing displays for myself, for gaming, work and graphics designing but when I think I know it all my dad come out with something I know nothing about. He asked me to look for some display for him for productivity and CAD/Solid Works designing. Can anyone tell me the specs I need to look at for this use? Thanks.

I could use some help building a rig for 3d modeling for 3d printing that would also work alright for gaming. I have no idea what I am doing when it comes to picking out hardware but lets put the budget at $2000 USD. Thanks!

I'm running through building the loop in my system and I am a very visual person. So I began looking for a CAD program that specializes in the design of custom built computers. It would ideally have a built in catalog of parts/components. Obviously it wouldn't be able to contain ALL of the little niche companies and pieces but those could be added by the user if the desired. If it was designed correctly it would greatly help in custom builds, water cooling loops, case mods, etc. I understand that there is the PC Building game but obviously I'm talking about something that is more professional and precise. If this exists then please someone let me know so I don't begin working on something that will be a tremendous waste of time.

Remember the old Apple Ad "I'm a Switcher"? Well after 40 years with Apple I'm Switcher from Apple to PC. Apple is now a phone company. This is my second build after the switch. First was a dual Xeon build with (4) 1080Ti's. I'm a retired Aerospace Engineer and did a lot of CAD and Graphics work during my career. I enjoyed it so much it's now my hobby in retirement. (Never did like to Golf). I use a lot of different software but currently Solidworks for modeling, Cinema 4D for modeling and animations & Redshift for rendering. This is my first build ever with an AMD CPU. All my career in engineering I used Xeon UNIX workstations as that is what they use in Aerospace. Very expensive boxes in the 70's and 80's. Like $70k per box and the CAD software I used was like $50k per seat annually. This new build of mine is 100's of times faster than those vintage boxes I used. Anyway, the main goal for this build was to build the strongest workstation possible inside a standard PC case. This workstation sits on my desk very close to me. I didn't want a mining rig, rack mounts or anything external like MoRa3's etc. My office is fully air conditioned and luckily I'm half deaf so fan noise is never an issue with me. Led Zeppelin blew out my left ear drum at a concert in 1974, indoor venue. I've never been able to hear from my left ear since that day. I feel lucky I didn't lose both. I dual boot this new build with Win 10 for Workstations and Linux Ubuntu. I still keep a Mac attached via a KVM switch but find myself using it less and less. Temps: After 1 hour Hybrid Render, CPU 64 cores @ 100% utilization, GPUs @ 95-99% utilization. CPU: 66-68c GPUs: 50-55c Water: 42c I don't do any gaming but I certainly could with this rig. It's insane fast. This build is actually more suited to Creating games. I modeled my custom Radiator Assembly to scale in Solidworks to insure it would fit in the space I had planned for it.

Budget (including currency): around 5000 Euro Country: Greece I'm building a new PC for a friend who is an orthodontist, and has decided to upgrade his main PC at work. The last time he did such an upgrade, he bought a desktop from the company (Sirano) that makes the software they use (inLab) for 3d modeling and 3d printing implants, bridges etc. This time he thought to give custom build a try because what they are offering is way overpriced, and 2-3 years behind in specs. The problem that i'm facing is that there is no mention of requirements from their website, not even pricing, and from what I've heard they're pushing pretty hard their own hardware, so much so that the warranty for their software is void if it runs on other software. What I'm looking for is anyone with experience with this specific software to advise on hardware requirements (CPU support , RAM usage, min vRAM , GPU the works), i'm interested in an AMD based workstation if the software is working with them properly.

Hi all, I'm new to the forum, familiar with the content of Linus. I'm an mechanical engineer in Holland and have a lot of experience with solidworks and Inventor. Looking at all the game pc builds I started to make some plans of making one for myself to replace my old crappy laptop. Although I also want to be able to do some 3d modeling on it. Now in the experience I have the most parametric cad programs can only run calculations on 1 core (because solving a model happens sequential). I have recently worked on a pc that was equipped with a p2000 gpu, but when the model was struggling the gpu had a 3% load. So I thought, is a gpu a requirement for 3d work? Do I need as many cores as possible for CAD work? Hope the community can enlighten me a bit on the requirements for CAD programs as I don't see the use for many cores and gpu power ( except when rendering images of course) Aldo never saw a video about cad stations which I would like to see ;) Thanks in advance,

Hi Guys and Girls, My first post here. I'm looking to get a gaming laptop that I can also do some light CAD work on. I've been looking at the Dell G5 with an I7-9750H and a RTX 2060 6GB. But I've heard they thermal throttle quite badly. Does anyone have any suggestions for an alternative? I'm from the UK and my budget is about £1500 ($1866). Cheers.

Hello! FYI: I am an architecture Student in Vienna, Austria. I mostly rely on CAD Programs f.e. Autodesk AutoCad, Revit and other Programs such as SketchUp (with Vray), Photoshop and MS Office. I already have a pretty decent PC with a i5-8600k, 32GB RAM and a GTX 1070TI. It runs everything very good --> so I have a system that is capable of rendering and handling larger Revit files. I also have an Iphone 6s and an IPad Pro 12.9" 2018 which I use to sketch and draw. Currently I use a 5 year old Asus Gaming Laptop, which is awfully heavy and the battery died recently, which means I need to upgrade. I am somewhat in the apple ecosystem with Iphone and Ipad (which I very much like) but I am having trouble to decide between a new MBP 16" (probably would wait for antoher refresh this summer) and the coming Dell XPS 15 7500. MBP Thoughts: reliable (somehwat) Could use my Ipad as a secondary screen Radeon PRO drivers, which work well for some CAD programs, for tohers they don't would have to learn MAC OS would have to learn programwise a new UI would have to switch between UI of MAC programs and Windows programs when coming home, since when I am at home I want to use my Desktop new Shortcuts Bigger Battery than XPS 99WHrs/87WHrs Airdrop would be nice Would have to use parallels in order to use Revit, since there is no native version --> more expensive,100 Bucks more expensive (about 500€(540USD) XPS 15 thoughts: Very nice screen Most CAD progams are nicely optimized for NVIDIA cheaper very good looking but MBP is nicer would only have to install the programs and learn nothing new I think bigger and therefore heavier charging cable (I guess) Could easily switch between Laptop and PC --> now new Keyboard Layout and Shortcuts Biggest positive for MBP: ecosystem Biggest negative for MBP: learn new UI and having to switch between MAC and PC. These are just some toughts so let me please know if you come up with other arguments. I know I could run all other Programs too in Parallels but I just don't want to buy a Mac and then just use Windows anyway. Following Specs for MBP: 10 series I9 (not the HK but the second best one), 32GB RAM, Radeon pro 5500 with 8GB VRAM and a 1 TB SSD Specs for the XPS 15: same as above, 32GB RAM, 1660TI (probably a MAXQ) 6GB VRAM and a 1TB SSD. I am only considering these two Laptops eventough a larger G14 would be nice^^ Please let me know based on what Arguments which desicion you would make. Furthermore, thanks to everyone reading this and helping me out! I am a little biased towards the Mac but I know it would be somewhat a "dumb" desicion since not even all programs have a native MAC version and who knows which CAD-programs I will have to use in the future. The Laptop should last me for about 5+ years. Thank you in advance, Gerhard

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction for a workstation laptop that rivals/out performs the Macbook pro 16" for £2799 https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/buy-mac/macbook-pro/16-inch I am convinced there has to be a better and more affordable Windows Laptop that can do this and more. The main uses are AutoCAD, Light rendering, Video editing, Microsoft office, streaming etc. No gaming or anything like that required. Really hope you can help out, I am looking around and though im seeing decent laptops, I am not seeing many that rival this. Thanks in advanced all!

1440p Thoughts on my 1440p 144hz mid-highend Build
TrueTaylor posted a topic in New Builds and Planning
This will be my first gaming build so I am very open to suggestion. As said in the title, I am planning a 1440p 144hz mid-high range build hopefully under 3000$ Canadian rupee (~2133.76USD). This budget including a decent monitor. Please see my specs below and look out for some further questions I put after: PCPartPicker Part List CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor ($270.00) CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($40.00) Motherboard: MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX ATX AM4 Motherboard ($170.00) Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory ($106.99 @ Newegg Canada) Storage: Samsung 970 Evo 500 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive ($170.00) Storage: Seagate Barracuda Compute 2 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($75.00) Video Card: Asus GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER 8 GB STRIX GAMING Advanced Video Card ($850.00) Case: Rosewill CHALLENGER ATX Mid Tower Case ($64.99 @ Newegg Canada) Power Supply: EVGA BQ 600 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply ($84.99 @ Canada Computers) Wireless Network Adapter: Gigabyte GC-WB867D-I PCIe x1 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi Adapter ($55.99 @ PC-Canada) Monitor: ViewSonic VX2758-2KP-MHD 27.0" 2560x1440 144 Hz Monitor ($450.00) Total: $2337.96 Total w/Tax: ~$2,640.00 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by 2020-04-27 13:23 EDT-0400 As you can see I chose the R5 3600 paired with a Cooler Master heat sink. From what I have seen this is a great value I'd love to hear your thoughts. Should I spend more and opt for the 3700x and ditch the heatsink? This will be a gaming only rig with some very minimal software development so I didn't see the need for an 8c cpu for the some time. Furthermore, I would like a 2070 super but am open to discussion here within nVidia for now(I.e. Would the 2060 be better value? How would it far with 1440p 144hz? Etc). More specifically, I wanted to ask about my decision to go with the ROG Strix 2070 super. Is this a good desicion? I know it is rated high in the tier list but why not save and get the EVGA 2070 SUPER BLACK GAMING for over 100CAD less and focus on good heat management in the case? Thank you for any constructive response you give, it is very appreciated! -
Hello all, My old gaming headset (Corsair H1500) just broke. I am new looking for some new headset that also upgrade my old one. I have been watching alot of youtube vids and rode alot of reviews about all kind of headset. Insteat of knowing better what I wanted, now I doubt even more. I play mainly CS:GO comp, but want to have a solid sound for future games too. What i had in mind: headset: Sennheiser game zero Aamp+CAD: Creative soundblaster G5 My onboard audio card on my motherboard is the: Realtek ALC1150 115dB SNS HD Audio What i also looked at are the: Sennheiser gsp300 or hyperX cloud 2. For USB headsets the sennheiser gsp350, Sennheiser 373D, logitech G933. Even the astro set pasted my thoughts. Can anyone help me out with my dilemma? thanks.

Weird question. Ive been looking to buy the razerblade stealth (base model kabylake) from Razer's own website. Im a Canadian and a student Im wondering is there any way for me to pay around the same price (for the CAD price listed on Razer's site) IN Canada or do I have to go through the border and pay tons of money for tariffs and whatever?

Hello. My name is André, from Portugal, in Europe. Currency is in euros I am an architect u work in 3D models and Rendering processes. As well adobe photoshop, InDesign, ilustrador and Autocad. I use Rhinoceros 3D, vray, SketchUp and gpu Rendering softwares, like thea render, octane. Probably i will move to 3d studio and some Rendering plugin, like cpu and gpu software system. Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, and other similar that work under openGL, viewports. I need to build a powerfull machine that handle heavy 24/7 workflow. As well as multitasking softwares. This machine is just for job work and to work with 2 Dell external monitors that i have in Office. I personaly will like to experience a small form case, like mini itx. Corsair obsidiana 250D (or similar dimensions). Mostly i need a super fresh case because of Rendering processes. I have about 1500 to 2000 euros to spend. I would Love to find performance to price satisfaction. But mostly and more important, to find a stable machine. OS would be windows 7. but as Microsoft reported the near end support for that system, i assume that i will be forced to move to win10. Any help about options on configurações and tips to config will be greatfull. Best regards.

I am taking an inventor class for college and we had to pick an item that has at least 10 pieces. I chose a Lego mini-figure plus some accessories for it. The only problem is I do not have the exact measurements of the figures. I tried to dimension them myself but some are nearly impossible to get. Does anyone know any site that lists all the dimensions and pieces of a Lego mini-figure?

I'm looking for a Workstation Laptop for university around $400US, will probably mostly see use with Solidworks or Solidedge, and a bit of rendering, perhaps CFD. I was wondering if anyone has a suggestion for a decent used laptop at this price-point. Currently, I'm leaning towards a Lenovo W530, but I feel as if I'm over valuing the worth of a Quadro/Firepro Graphics card (not a lot of experience with this) in light of more modern general purpose GPU's, or even just more raw CPU power. Thanks in advance, and I apologise if this has already been covered.

Hello, I've been looking for a laptop recently. I need it for work/uni (Office, Programming, light CAD work), but still need the portability. I have a few points on which I'm unsure of what to do. First of all, I get recommended to buy a 15" model instead of 13". Should I go for a 15"? Also, I do not really know what computers to look at. I've seen the Dell XPS (way too expensive), the HP Spectre x360 (Reviews are only 4/5), and the Asus Zenbook 501VW . I'm also hesitating on storage. Should I go for 256GB or 512GB? I know that I will be thankful for the extra space, but at the same time I plan on having a large hard drive next to it (It would stay in my dorm all the time). Anyhow, do any of you have any suggestions on what I should do? Cheers, Sneling

Hello! Im planning a new build of a CAD-Workstation and Gaming-Rig. But even before I decide on the Graphics (will probably get a workstation card and a gaming card), RAM etc, I like to choose a case. I'm searching for a rack-mounted case, which means I'm searching for a 4U Server case. I like to have as much airflow as possible, something like 2-3 120mm fans on the front and a few 80mm on the back. It should fit an ATX-board and 2 GPUs, as well as a decent power supply and an SSD (no HDD required). I'm also thinking about using a AIO-Watercooler with Rad, but I'm not sure to this date if it's worth it. Do you have any suggestions for a 19" case? I think 4U is standard (to fit the GPUs), the second thing is the depth, I like it as short as possible, max. 500mm if possible. I found this one (ROSEWILL RSV-R4000): https://www.amazon.com/Rosewill-Server-Chassis-Rackmount-Metal/dp/B0055EV30W?tag=linus21-20 But here, there are only two 120mm fans on the front and it's slightly longer (depth). If I go with the one with three fans on the front, the case depth increases even more. Another one is this one (NORCO RPC 431): http://www.norcotek.com/product/rpc-431/ But here I don't know if it isn't too short for all the stuff I like to put in. This one seems interesting too (ADVANTECH IPC 631): http://www.advantech.com/products/1-2jkd4b/ipc-631/mod_4088ba6f-9779-4901-9620-16ffa2143ce1 But there are only small ventilation cut-outs, so I think this won't work... right? I previously owned the ARK 4U-500-CA (https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811182566&cm_re=ark_case_4u-_-11-182-566-_-Product), which was nice, but I like to have more ventilation upgradability, when I plan this new build Thanks in advance! Hello! I'm planning a new pc build for two purposes: CAD-Workstation (3D-Modelling) AND a bit of gaming (Maybe a cheap workstation GPU and a modest gaming GPU). I already found some parts, like the case, possible PSU etc, but I'm struggling with the processor: Core Series or Xeon? I'm thinking a bit like this: Core Series: Pro: standard for gaming, works with CAD too; also normal socket, relatively cheap, overclockable (but I don't want to overclock) Con: no ECC support, I pay for integrated GPU Xeon Series: Pro: ECC support, no iGPU (which I don't need), maybe better value for money if I take an E3? Con: MoBo has to support it, which is usually more expensive; same socket if I take E3, but E5 would need different socket With what would you go? It affects the MoBo and the memory, and the upgradeability. If I go with the Core-Series I'd take an actual i5 (i5-7500 - I don't want to overclock), if I'd go with the XEON-Series, I don't know yet... E3 should be standard, but does it support DDR4? And if I'd go with the E5 I need a different socket, it is more expensive AND it's not useful, if I only use one cpu, right? Thanks for your advice! Manu

I'll be coming into money after my exams finish (Jun 23rd) and I've decided to use it to build myself a nice PC for Gaming (mostly just Beam.ng drive and GTA V), Running a Plex Server, CAD (Fusion 360, Solidworks, Autodesk Inventor) and some light Photo/Video work. I'll be on a 1080p monitor but I want it to be 4k capable incase I want to hook it up to my TV. Also I'm based in Ireland so I'm pretty much limited to Amazon UK and any EU based retailers that deliver to the UK and Ireland. The PCPP list below is what I am currently set on at the moment, please suggest any improvements that could be made to the selection that will keep it in and around the same performance level and make it more cost effective as I want to make sure I'm getting the most out of my money in terms of performance.
