  1. Since a couple days ago, i finally became the proud owner of the JTK Tian Wen set including the special edition BBOX60 case. I waited close to half a year for this set, and i think it's one of the best looking sets out there! The BBOX60 gives it a lovely retro look because of the big bezels, and the caps are thick, quality caps that give the board a lovely sounding 'thock'. Lets modify this set to be wireless! The board now Kailh heavy Box Burnt Orange switches Brass plate GH60 PCB JTK Tian Wen caps BBOX60 case I really want to keep this layout, with the arrow cluster in a 60% footprint. So here's what i wanna do: The plan The coolermaster SK622 is a wireless keyboard with the same layout i want to keep on my board. I'll gut the coolermaster board to harvest the wireless PCB/battery. swap out the plate and switches for the brass plate and new Kailh Box Blacks. The coolermaster board has the USB connector on the wrong place, but because of the retro bezels of the BBOX60 case i can just use a USB extender cable to re-route it to the proper spot. And if everything goes to plan, my little board should be wireless! Depending on how much room i have left in this case, i want to fill it up with some acoustic foam aswell. So that's it for now, the new switches and donor board are on their way. Expect updates soon!
  2. Alright, so i'm finally doing something i've been meaning to do for years! A long time ago, i went and bought a secondhand 4U server chassis. I have no clue what brand or model it is, but after drilling out some rivets and mounting a 360 radiator with some double sided tape it turned into my very first server! It started out quite small, but now it's a beast with loads of hardware and top of the line specs! Right now she's running: AMD EPYC 7551 256GB DDR4 ECC 2400 SuperMicro H11SSL-i Inno 3D RTX 2080Ti Nvidia Grid K2 with a noctua fanmod Kingston 512 GB NVMe drive EVGA SUPERNOVA 1000W G3 with a noctua NF-F14 Engineering Sample Mellanox 10G SFP+ NIC And of course custom watercooling on all the hot parts. I've had many, many hardware configurations in this thing, and it always worked like a dream. This case truly was the start of my enterprise tech obsession, and maybe even the reason why i work in datacenters today. The thing is, even tough the hardware inside is amazing, the outside doesn't really look the part. It's always been an old, secondhand server chassis i got for cheap. Here it is in my current rack. It's the middle server without any drive bays. This buildlog is finally going to change that! Here's the plan: Mods! - Swap out the front panel for something better looking and less restrictive - Swap out the front of the case with a proper radiator mount from a donor case - Paint the chassis (outside and inside) - Remove all excess brackets from the old case configuration - Re-do the watercooling - Add easy to use drain and fill ports - (maybe) add a PSU shroud I've already purchased a proper donor case for this. Enter the Zalman T7: I went with this case for a few reasons. First, this case has a symmetrical front panel, which is almost exactly the size of a 19" 4U rackmount. And because i will place it on it's side basically, this is a very big plus. Second, almost the entire front is mesh, and there are no secondary filters or other stuff to restrict the airflow. Noice! Third, this case has a 360mm radiator mount in the front which i can cut out and mount in the front of my server chassis. And last but not least: This thing was 35 euro's brand new! That's it for now, updates as the case arrives and the mods begin!
  3. So some of you might know that my previous build met it's end in a rather unpleasant way. The bottom GPU power connector caught fire through some shitty Aliexpress adapter, and in turn burned the whole thing down. Here's some pics of the carnage that followed: So this build is going to be a continuation where my previous one left off. specs: AMD Threadripper 2970WX (purchased) 32GB GSkill Trident Z (purchased) ASUS ROG Zenith Extreme Alpha (purchased) AMD Radeon RX6900 XT (purchased) Silverstone SX800LTI (purchased) Coolermaster SFX V850 (purchased) Lian-Li PC-O11D Mini (purchased) Intel 760P 1TB SSD (purchased) ASUS Hyper M.2 card V2 (purchased) CableMd black cables (purchased) this build will also feauture full custom watercooling: 2X EK-Coolstream SE 360 radiators (purchased) EK nickel sTR4 waterblock (purchased) EK fullcover waterblock for the 6900XT (purchased) EK-FLT D5 240 pump/res combo (purchased) 8x Arctic P12 EST PWM (purchased) EK Torque hardline fittings (purchased) 16mm nickel plated brass tubing (purchased) That's it for now, tough i'll testfit the main components soon and i'll post a little teaser for things to come!
  4. Hello together, I finally finished my sleeperpc. It took way too long and is really rough, if you look at it closely. I didnt took that many pictures, so you have to imagine a few steps. I started with a old tuberadio, wich was dead. So i started with making place for the computerparts i wanted to put into it. For the parts i used mostly the parts i already had, which are: - RTX 2060 Super - Ryzen 5 3600 - 2x8GB Ram 4200Mhz - B550 Phantom Gaming-Itx/ax Motherboard from ASRock - and a Coolermaster 750W Powersupply I also needed: - a ryzercable - a fanhub - and a few longer cables for the powersupply This is the biggest part, which was pretty dusty, like anything on the inside of the case. It looks pretty Janky with all the cables, tubes and giant condensators. But this was the state of the art in the 1950/60 from with this one is. The traces on the bottom are also not, what we are used to today. But back to the building of the pc. At first i needed to figure out, how to cool the thing. I decided, that i would pull in air through the fabric, which was in front of the speakers and push it out through a hole in the bottom. The fans are mounted on a flat piece of wood and srewed into place. After that i needed to place the components in the case. My goal was, that you cant see anything unusual from the front. I think i got it mostly. For the graphicscard my choices were to put the ports on the side or on the top, because it was way too long, to have the ports in the back. I choose to put the ports on the top, because the top is one of the only flat surfaces on the case, witch would make it way easyer to mount it. So i cut a hole for the card on the top. To fit the card in i also needed to remove the shroud on it. With the graphicscard in place there were only two places for the motherboard. I put it on the left because why not. The cooling on the cpu is bad. I know that. If you got an idea, how the cooler can be rotated, you can comment it. While we are on the part of the cooling. The airflow isnt that great. There are four intake fans, but the cloth is really thick. I thought there wold be more air going through it. The powersupply was mounted on the other side and all was cabled up. To turn it on i wanted to be able to use one of the buttons/levers on the front beacause they have a really great feeling and sound. The problem here was, that they stay in place, till you push an other lever to reset them. So i experimented with an extra circuit to turn it into a pulse. In the end i damaged the mechanism of the levers, so that they dont stay in place and go back as soon as you release them. Now for the finished thing. If you dont look close enough it isnt that bad.
  5. 6/14/2022 The dream: I was watching some of Linus's videos on YouTube, when I had a sudden epiphany. A Super Pc that would absolutely crush any other mainstream gaming pc. I new that to make the next big step in gaming would have to be a big step away from the usual gaming PC parts. No, I would need a different approach that would get both myself and my builds noticed. I am talking server parts, hardware that was designed to take massive amounts of data and crunch it at insane speeds. I find that that is the only way to overtake the modern Gaming Pc. Wish me luck. (God I sound like Linus's intros.) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6/14/2022 (continued about an hour later) I have a general idea of how the build will work: I will first have a min board. I was thinking of using a Gigabyte's new MZ31-AR0. I would place very little SSD storage on this board. (more on that Later.) The next think that I would add would be a normal HP motherboard that i would salvage out of an old pc. I would use it as a standard pc, however, it would not be used for any gaming. It would have a high performance internet port in order to quickly transfer data outside the computer. (I will explain further later) Then next motherboard I would have is a GIGABYTE Z590 UD AC LGA 1200 Intel Z590 ATX Motherboard I would use this a backup or otherwise "support" pc to reduce the main motherboard's load, or to be used as a Minecraft server or something. It would also have a hyper fast data card for high speed data transfer. Finally, I would use some server board that was designed for SSD storage. (help me in the comments please) Lastly, as a cherry on top: I would use 3 Nvidia GTX 580s daisy chained to the main Board. Suddenly, I realized that there is no official OS that could run a build like this. To fix this problem, I would either use some sort of custom Lunix or Ubuntu OS, or I could use a VM. I no absolutely nothing about engineering my own OS with Lunix or ubuntu. But I do understand Servers, and server computing with a VM. But there is one final problem: I want there to be a few operations changes. First off, when I go to open a program such as space engineers, when I click to open it, it would send the entirety of the program to the RAM on the main board. I would then play it normally. When I am done, and I close out of the program, it would move it back to LOS or (Long Term Storage.) This would only work for the main board, and the Auxiliary board. It would not work on the independent PC, which would have its own designated storage. To take this a whole step further, I could install a private router to the build. This would increase download and upload speeds, AND it would reduce the amount of ethernet cables exiting the build. I realize now what exactly the EF1 is supposed to do: it is to remove as many bottle necks as possible, to provide as much of a seamless experience as possible. (I am continuing to work on this. No videos Please) -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  6. Hi all, I am to writing my experience of the ASrock B450M-HDV R4.0 in the hope that the next person whom struggles may find my notes via google or on these forums. Tags: ASrock B450M-HDV R4.0 PCPartPicker Part List Type Item Price CPU AMD Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHz 6-Core Processor $157.94 @ Amazon Motherboard ASRock B450M-HDV R4.0 Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard $73.98 @ Newegg Memory Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory $79.98 @ Amazon Storage Crucial MX500 1 TB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive $114.99 @ Amazon Video Card Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER 4 GB OC Video Card $159.99 @ Best Buy Power Supply Cooler Master MasterWatt Lite Full Range 600 W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply $271.71 @ Amazon Case Fan ARCTIC P12 Value Pack 56.3 CFM 120 mm Fans Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts Total $858.59 Generated by PCPartPicker 2020-05-26 20:51 EDT-0400 Big takeaways on Motherboard: The board diagram of the B450M-HDV on ASRock site is not the same as B450M-HDV R4.0, the front panel layout differs notably, refer to the paper manual with your board for best accuracy. Ram is really hard to seat, gotta give it a bit of welly, ended up troubleshooting a ram issue for a few hours. (power to fans but didn't post), turned out ram needed a good slide. My motherboard speaker shipped with board did not beep (yes i plugged it in) , during troubleshooting i should've had a 3 beep , so i suspect it was faulty or beep codes don't work as well as they should. Be aware. Ram QVL on Asrock is pretty limited... for me, using a mix of pc part picker and the corsair compatibility tool helped me to get a more budget/speed suitable option. Can confirm CMK16GX4M2B3200C16 worked for me. However i read the 450 series with AMD processors can be surprisingly picky. Board uses a 24/20 pin and 4 pin for power, this is not unusual but is easily missed. Takeaway of case - CiT F3 CiT F3 Micro-ATX PC Gaming Case , the fans that come with it, have annoying cabling (length and type), i wanted to give them a try but in hindsight should've taken them out first thing. Picked up for £30 , pretty happy with it Big shout out to the troubleshooting guide on these forums: Shout out to Youtube video i used which helped sanity check a few things (he does a lot of sales crap and isn't my taste of presenters but ok ref video): Hope this helps someone one day. All the best R
  7. Hi Guys, My name is Shane and I am a first time poster, new to the forum and wanted to start a work log on my upcoming build in Thermaltakes Core P5. Its around 3am here and I have been drawing up some draft sketches and non scale drawings on my graph pad to render some ideas for how this things will go together. Concept: Create an infinity effect as the back plate of the Core P5, but not just the surrounds but accent each component with its own infinity effect. The idea will be to place a new back plate over the existing case, add in the infinity effect using mirrored acrylic and component platforms to accenting each component. I haven't decided if I want to use MDF or Ply Wood or rather a combination of both. Follow this post to stay up to date! You can see the photo of the effect below. Follow us on Facebook to check out any new and upcoming builds. * If you would like to jump on board with this build. It would definitely be appreciated. 8. Legolas, a water cooled and wall mounted Mini-ITX build Picture coming up Introduction: It's been almost a year since I sold my desktop as I was going on a exchange in the states. Now that I'm back my Macbook Pro is not sufficient for my study needs nor my gaming needs. For many years I've wanted to make a water cooled system but it was always hard to justify the price and the case I was using at the time. Now with the PC-O5S I think there's no alternative to water cooling, even if the performance gains are negligible. To make it easier to justify the price of water cooling to myself, I've tried to get some of the components second hand. Now I haven't done that with every component, I want the case to be in perfect condition so that is ordered brand new. However, there is quite a lot to save looking at second hand storage, video cards and monitors, which is exactly what I did. My second hand items though, look like they just came out of their original packaging. You may wonder why I've a Noctua CPU cooler. I choose to get this as I'm not completely sure about what water cooling I'm going to get. So to be able to use my new computer while doing research I opted for this Noctua cooler, which later will be transferred to my beloved NAS. Every since I made my NAS in the Lian-Li PC-Q25B I've pretty much been obsessed with their cases, the brushed aluminium and the tempered glass. It's a pain to work with, to keep it perfect, but when you're done it's so rewarding. The name Legolas is of course from Lord of the Rings but it fits my intentions for this Mini-ITX build pretty good as well. I want to build a good looking build that is still capable of handling pretty much whatever you throws at it. From the very beginning I'm completely aware of potential bottlenecks in terms of temperaturs as the case will only fit a fairly slim radiator in the top. However, with power requirements of computer components constantly decreasing, I'm sure if it can handle my components now, today, I'm pretty confident it will be able to handle the components of tomorrow. Also, I forgot to mention the best part. The case is wall mountable, which I'm obviously going to utilise. Parts list: CPU: Intel Core i5-7600K (ordered) CPU cooler: Noctua NH-L9x65 (ordered) Motherboard: ASUS ROG Strix Z270I Gaming (ordered) RAM: Cosair Vengeance LPX 1x16GB DDR4 2400MHz Black (ordered) Storage: Samsung 950 PRO NVMe M.2 512GB SSD (ordered) Video card: EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti SC GAMING (ordered) (arrived) Case: Lian-Li PC-O5SX (ordered) (arrived) Power supply: SilverStone SFX Series SX600-G (ordered) Monitor: ASUS ROG SWIFT PG278Q (ordered) (arrived) Other: GentleTyphoon D1225C12B5AP-15 (1,850 rpm) x 2 (ordered) (arrived) Other: Lian-Li O5-1X (ordered) Peripherals: Mouse: SteelSeries Sensei Raw Rubberised Mousepad: SteelSeries QcK Gaming Mousepad Keyboard: Ducky Mini Year of the Horse Headphones: Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6XX Headphones stand: Just Mobile HeadStand Black Microphone: Blue Microphones Yeti Future purchases: PSU cables: Short cable to keep it nice and clean. Premade: CableMod. Yet to decide on the colour scheme. Custom Sleeving: MDPC-X Sleeving tools: Pin-remover Water cooling: This case is screaming for water cooling. AIO rad/res/pump unit + custom Full custom loop RGB lightning strip Fan splitter: Not complete sure what solution to go for yet. I will have a maximum of 3 fans in the case. I'm sure when building the system I will gain experience about what solution would be preferable. Pictures: All upcoming pictures will be added to this album. Updates: I will keep this post updated so you don't have to look around for it. I can't wait to get started but for now I have to wait until all the parts have arrived. Feedback and suggestions is more than welcome, especially in terms of the water cooling as it is where I'm more unsure and I lack some experience. Cheers Shaqalac.
  9. So, here's gonna be my very first build log! Are you excited? I know i am! This is by no means my very first build. I've build around 5 PC's before, some really nice ones too imo, but never really got to making a real proper build log. Time to change that, no? So, let's get to it then. The name of the beast: Black Mac. "Why?" You ask? Well, because this PC is gonna be build in a modded Mac case. Specifically this one: Now that right there is a beauty, isn't it? This beast will be a video editing workstation for my older bro, who is in need of a new one. I originally planned for this to be a F@H PC, but as my post in the thread below describes, those plans are off for now. Now for the meat and potatoes, the actually important stuff. The (updated) specs! Case- Powermac G5 (m-ATX modded) (purchased) CPU- Intel Xeon E5 2603 V4 (purchased) MOBO- Asus X99-M WS/SE (Purchased) GPU- Nvidea GTX Titan X (Maxwell) 2-Way SLI (Purchased) PSU- EVGA Supernova 850W (Purchased) SSD- WD Blue M.2 1TB RAM- 16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 (purchased) Cooling- Custom Cooling loop! (hardline?) Right now i'm going to keep the stock cooling in because of time constraints. So, expect updates as the parts start rolling in. I, for one, am really looking foreward to this building adventure. Adios!
  10. Put together while in college, my hand-me-down pc is looking pretty good now a days: -I5 2500 -12gb assorted DDR3 1600Mhz Ram -1 terabyte hdd -MSI 1050TI OC -ThermalTake 650W Bronze PSU sub $400 USD
  11. Alright, so i bought an InWin 301 out of impulse, and now i'm stuck with it. So i figured i might aswell transplant my current build into it! So spec wise nothing is really going to change, except ofcourse the case and a few other things. My build right now: The plan: -Transplant the system in the new case, but aircooled and upgraded -Figure out how to do a custom rigid loop in this case -Build said custom rigid loop -Profit! For now this is it. The InWin case should arrive in a couple of days, so stay tuned for updates!
  12. How much do you think I could sell for my new gaming rig (not even sure if i am interested in selling it rn)? I made a pcpartpicker list of the build here (some of the parts I hade to manually make because I couldnt find themhttps://pcpartpicker.com/list/9YpxM8Specs:**CPU Cooler**: Fully Custom Watercooling loop w/ customizable dye (Retail value is about $300-$400)**Memory**: 16 GB G.Skill Trident Z **Overclocked @3000Mhz w/ FULLY CUSTOMIZABLE RGB Lighting****Motherboard**: MSI Artic Tomahawk Z270 Motherboard with **BIOS Fully Updated****Storage**: Samsung 960 Evo Internal SSD 250GB (**Set up as boot drive so, no hassle setting up Window**s) & if needed I can provide **2TB Seagate HDD (Faster 2017 Edition)****Graphics Card**: Asus GTX 1070 ROG Strix Gaming **OC @1800MHz w/ Fully customizable RGB lighting on front and back plate.****Case**: NZXT Phantom 630 **(Windowed Edition)** PC Chasis **Power Supply**: Semi Modular Corsair CXM Power Supply supports **up to 750W****Lighting**: One Deepcool RGB Lighting Kit w/ two led lighting strips and two LED Corsair SP120 Fans**Operating System**: Windows 10 Home Edition w/ All System drivers Updated.
  13. Hi! I'm planning on building a 24-core, dual xeon workstation later this week. With future plans to expand to quad-sli, watercooling. Also future plans to upgrade to dual 22-core Xeon E5-2699 V4 (although this is definitely a future future plan...) Was a custom build or a Mac Pro... so here we are! Would there be any interest in a build-log? If there is I'll be sure to document the journey! Also, any questions re the build or anything else feel free to ask below! George!
  14. Hello, Guten Tag and Bonjour everyone, This is gonna be my "build log" and experience setting up my first NAS, which will be a custom build FreeNAS Box. First of all, sorry for everyone (but 2 guys) who voted on my most recent topic about the name of the NAS. Everyone was highly into "BanaNAS" but i don't actually like it too much, lol. As the title already suggests, i went with "Boss-NAS" @mr moose. It has its origin in the Star Wars universe, where Boss Nass is the leader of the Gungans, who fight off the droid attack on Naboo during the Phantom Menace. (But what about the droid attack on the wookiees?) This guy right here: Here's the overview over the components that will be used: CPU: AMD Ryzen R5 2400G Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 Motherboard: Asus Prime X370-Pro RAM: 16gb G.Skill Aegis 3000mhz PSU: Seasonic Focus Plus Platinum 550w Case: Fractal Design R5 NIC: Emulex Dual 10Gbit SFP+ Storage: 6x 4TB WD Red in Raidz2 1x 250gb Samsung 970Evo as Cache 2x 500gb Samsung 860Evo in Raid0 for high speed 2x Transcend 32gb USB Stick mirrored for the OS Color Code: Red=Don't have that yet or only partially Orange=Not sure if it works in that config Black=Already had those parts Green=Already aquired So as you can see, the thing will be pretty OP for most, as well as my own, usecases. The quad core R5 with onboard graphics is good enough for media streaming up to 4k and should also hold up nicely for any kind of VM testing. FreeNAS recommends 1gb RAM for each TB of Storage but i'm not really sure if they are saying 1TB of actual storage or theoretical storage. The issue here is, that Raidz2 will basically eliminate 9TB of my storage (15TB of 24TB usable) for redundancy, making it possible for me to lose 2 Drives at once while still having all my Data safe. I've read though, that the 1gb/1tb is actually not all that relevant. The 550w PSU is Platinum, rated and should help to always keep my within the range of optimal efficiency however i would've liked to get an even lower wattage unit but apparently those are very rare in ATX Form Factor and 80+Platinum efficiency. Now lets jump into the usecases of this NAS: 1. Backup -> The NAS is ofc a Backup solution for all my critical and private Data such as my GF's Uni Stuff and ofc lots of Pictures. I also want to configure the NAS to automatically backup all my phones pictures as soon as i enter my (or any?) wifi, the same way google pictures does it essentially. 2. Game Storage -> While i've read that some games may take several minutes to start from a NAS, i still want to give it a shot. Considering i will be running 10Gbit to each of my machines, this should in theory work just fine. If it turns out things are unplayable, i'll still keep the Games on the NAS so i can quickly grab them from any other PC and just install them. 3. Cloud Storage -> There are some plugins on FreeNAS which allow me to use the NAS outside of my Home Network so i can access all my data at any time and at any place. This is a lower priority though as i first have to figure some other things out. 4. Streaming -> I'm actually a huge fan of Blurays and 4k Blurays but i still want to move all my physical discs on to the NAS in 100% of the quality. Each Bluray will therefore use around 30-50gb of space. Jikes. I've narrowed it down to Plex as my media server because it seems to be the most simple to use and has a wide variety of compatibility. 5. VMs -> Actually i've never had any interest in VMs but i wanna give it a try, maybe to learn some better about Ubuntu or whatever. This is also a low priority but still interesting. Next up the progress i'm currently finding myself in: here are a few pics of the components i'm using First off the Drives i already purchased. Very beautiful! Really enjoyed opening these puppies up! :3 Although, i sadly can not use the HDDs currently because FreeNAS, as of right now, doesnt allow for the Raid Array to be expanded. That means i'll have to get everything installed at once and will not be able to expand in the future. (Expanding is possible however, just not this particular Raid Array) The two SATA SSDs on the other hand can be implemented already as you'll see a few pics down. Next there are my two USB Drives that i'm using for the OS, FreeNAS. It was actually a pain in the arse to get these as i've read so many reviews on Amazon about USB Drives and legit all of them are shiet. Either they break after 1 day, their speeds are only 5mb/s or they overheat like crazy. These ones got the best reviews so i chose them. They aer 32gb which is massivley oversized but they were only 2€ more than the 16gb so whatever, lol. They also have small heat issues when running the system, so does anyone have an idea to keep them a little cooler? I was thinking about just glueing small vram heatsinks on them. Here's the whole horror assembled right now, lmao. As i don't have a case yet and i really desperately wanted to try everything out, i'm finding myself in this, not really safe, situation. Please don't do that kids. You can see the Nvme and Sata SSD's "Installed" Though as well as the massive NH-D14 cooler and the PSU. There's also the motherboard, the Asus Prime X370-Pro which was one of only 2 (i think) AM4 Boards i could find that feature 8 Sata ports. It's almost impossible. I really really hope that all SATA ports will still be active when the Nvme is installed. Some boards will turn off 2 SATA ports for that but i haven't found anything about that in the manual, which you can also see supporting my SSDs, LOL. Last but not least for now, there's FreeNAS 11.2 running (or booting)! Really happy that worked out almost flawlessly. I've had a little trouble figuring out the way actually assign Volumes as that is quite confusing imo. Starting of you have to make a Pool, which was easy enough. I just selected my two 860Evos for a striped Raid0. Then you need a Dataset which is like a Folder on the Raid Array or drive. To access this drive via windows however, you need to assign a Share to the Folder and assign a User (which you have to creat first) to the Share with a username and password. Only then (and after some Network configuration which is pretty straight forward though) can you access the NAS in Windows (or Linux or uuhh, Mac, if you are into that....) A Funny thing was, that FreeNAS itself chose the IP ending .69 which ofc, i will keep You always enter the Box over the Web-UI with this IP address so don't lose it So for now, thanks for reading. If you have any comments or question, feel free to ask and i'll do my best to answer and hopefully someone else will pic this up to also build himself a FreeNAS. Or you could just wait to see how crazy it'll drive me first
  15. PROJECT GREEN DRAGON Hi Guys! Here i present you again a another unique build with Jonsbo Mod1 open-frame chassis. As you might know that i have done the previous build with the same case, but in red&black color. This time I chose the same chassis with green&black color and planned a totally different loop.:). The color combination has gone well, although I’am not going to do the major changing with the chassis. Decided to leave the original paint. But, let see how the build process is going on. The components and the water cooling parts are as below. Will add if something changes or or missed out. 16. Hello, This is my first post here, I think I am posting it in the wrong place, but I hope you will forgive me this one time. So what I wanted to ask was, which part needs to be updated most in my PC. CPU:Intel Core i5 3470 Motherboard:ASUS P8H61-M LX3 R2.0 GPU:GTX1060 3GB SSD: Samsung 860 PRO 512GB HDD: Western Digital WDC WD10EZEX-60WN4A0 1TB Case: I don't even know the name. RAM: Hyperx Fury 8GB 1600 DDR3 Display:ViewSonic VX2239 SERIES I know it's not the best RIG out there, but I can't afford to upgrade everything at once, so I wanted to ask about the priorities of the upgrades in this case, which part should I upgrade after which, step by step. THere was mentioned in the thread something about the Location, so it is USA. And also the computer will be used 90% of the time for Gaming. Thanks in advance
  17. alright, so this is gonna be the start of the buildlog i'm doing to switch my system from it's current config to AMDs Threadripper platform. I'm doing this because my motherboard died sadly. I was in the process of swapping the CPU for a 2690V2 when i put in a little too much force and ended up breaking one of the chokes on the VRMs when my screwdriver slipped. It's the middle one on the picture below. Luckily Asrock just recently released the X399M Taichi board, which makes this as good of a time as any to make the plunge! Lesson learned i guess, when i get to installing the Threadripper slow and steady is gonna be the way to go Just look at this board tough! If i ever got a tech-boner from something it has got to be this thing. so much stuff crammed on so little space! First things first, right now my setup looks like this: which is really just a heartbreaking thing to see if i'm honest. this rig was made to crunch numbers in Folding@Home, not sit still disassembled on my desk. Sadly i won't be able to really get going with this untill later on this month when my paycheck comes. I was not prepared to make the switch this early, so i can only buy the motherboard right now. speaking of which, lets make a to do list. i really only need to swap out the RAM, motherboard and CPU. everything else in the system is ready to go really. I'll also need to swap out the X99 edition CPU block for a TR4 model. PARTS! RED= pending, BLUE= bought, GREEN= arrived and in my hands! Asrock X399M Taichi motherbord AMD RYZEN Threadripper 1900X Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB (2x8) DDR4 3000 EKWB Supremacy Threadripper CPU block EKWB EK-FC Geforce GTX FE GPU block XSPC temperature sensor/display Alphacool temperature sensor in a G1/4 fitting Noctua NF-F12 Chromax (x3) So i guess that's it for now. Watch this space for updates, which will come as parts start rolling in!
  18. Hi Guys! Here is "THE REDRIPPER" project that I’ve been planning to build since the mid-winter due to lack of spare-time. The components have been laying around for months now. I’ve had enough to stare every single day to them, lol. So I decided to begin at least with a build-log. At the beginning i was doubting to go with AMD which it's first time to go with red team. I hope i won't be disappointed. This build will be used for 2D-3D modelling and video editing software which is very new for me. Well, after making a few extra holes on fan holes (expanded a few mm) in front i had to recover it somehow. Then something more complicated came to my mind.Anodized Color coat, Granite Stone paint, Matt black paint and off course primer. I have lost many pictures during the process of the painting. Because my harddrive is got broke. These are what i have saved so far:(.
  19. Hello good people of the internet! This is a buildog i'm doing on a homemade 60% mechanical keyboard. I'm doing this build because my current keyboard (BTC 5100C) is starting to fail, and i didn;t want to go out and buy a normal mechanical again. I'd rather just build it myself, so that it is just the way i want it! Also the failing of my current board means that typing this buildlog is literal hell, because sometimes random keys just don't register. Here's the parts list, everything is bought from Aliexpress. Red means planned Yellow means bought Green means delivered at my place Gateron Blue Switches XD60 PCB GH60 Solid wood case with wrist rest LED hotswap plugs LEDs in different colors Cool Jazz Black/Gray Keycaps Cool Jazz CherryMX PCB mounted stabilizers Braided Mini-USB cable So first things first: The Switches arrived! I went with Gateron Blue switches because i wanted to try something clicky this time, and these have a nice tactile bump. The compatibility with CherryMX keycaps is also definitely a plus! I bought this whole bag for about 20 euro's. Definitely worth the 2 week wait before they where delivered So that is it for now. I'm still waiting on the rest of the parts, but according to the site most of them have arrived in my country by now! I'll keep updating this as parts start rolling in!
  20. Hi all, just want to pick your brains on upcoming deals and whatnot. 23. Hello everyone Today I finally finished my recent project the “Smoker”. This was a project I fantasized about for years, but never had the time nor resources to realize. My friends and I had talked about a PC that is essentially a wind tunnel and I found this to be so intriguing that I had to build it. The design is pretty simple since it is nothing more than a tube with two large fans on either side. However, I wanted to keep my PC hardware and did not want to buy new parts just for this build. So it had to fit my mITX-motherboard, a Geforce 780, my ATX power supply and a H100i liquid cooler. After some tinkering I came up with this: Now that I had a plan I started on the basics. I slaughtered an old case I had spare for a motherboard back plate. Sadly, it did not have a CPU cutout and also lacked cable-management holes, so I had to cut them myself. These struts I cut out additionally would later hold the case together and hold the back plate. Then I had to ask for a few favors from a previous employer of mine, so I got hold of the remaining parts for my case: The Steel tube that had to be cut in half and some lids with holes for 200mm fans. In these lids I had to drill some holes and test-fitted my NZXT fans. I also predrilled the holes for hinges and rivets that would keep everything together. Of course a smoker would not be complete without a handle, so I bought that too. Now I had to paint those parts, which was a pain since I had no place to paint these other than outside and the weather just would not play nice. I had to use a primer made for zinc-metals since the steel had a fresh zinc-coat. So after primer and paint it looked like this: I did not pain the inside (except for the primer) since I was planning to add some dampening on the inside. I remembered that I would need a drive cage for my remaining hard drives, so I nicked one from another case and painted that together with the back plate and a grate for the exhaust fan (since there will not be a dust filter on the right side). Of course this tube would not sit straight without some feet, so I took some wooden fence and stained it. Then the assembly began. I fitted a dummy-board to test the clearance for IO. Seemed okay at first, but proved to be very tight. I also ordered some parts to hold my radiator from Case-King and screwed it in. Soon I started adding the power-button and front I/O, then I moved on to applying the dampening material on the inside after which I installed the fans and the metal grate on the right side. I used spare dampening material and Velcro to fix the PSU and drive cage, then I used some more Velcro to attach the SSDs. Then I tossed the dummy-board and started to move the rest of my hardware into the case. The dust filer looks very greyish in this photo, but it’s just bad lighting. I did spend some more time on cable-managing, but I just wanted to be done at this point since I had to troubleshoot the system. It was quite unstable for some time and I wanted to finally fix it. Some minor tweaks and assembly later, it was stable again. Seems like the crashes were due to the Y-cable I used for my GPU, so I replaced that with two separate cables. Seems stable now. Finally, I connected all my periphery and called it a day. If anyone is interested to know anything else, just ask away. =) I will try to respond as fast as possible. Thank you for reading. Tell me in the comments if you liked this build and enjoyed it as much as I did. Cheers
  24. Hi Guys/Ladies on LTT forum! After watching almost tons of LTT/NCIX Tech Tip videos on youtube, I finally appeal to the pros on the forum for my first ever PC Build! Myself: Never really had any experience with full PC building (I had experience with upgrade module like pull out a part and plug in a new part) I consider myself somewhat average on PC knowledge (I know what a ram does and what does PCI means.. I think ) 1. Budget & Location Location: Down under Straya~ (Australia) Budget: AUD$5000 incl peripherals (Do note Australia has ridiculous % of GST and almost every tech stuff is more expensive than the US of A & Canada) 2. Aim/Reason for Build Well folks, I am currently running a 5 years old Alienware M14x R2, Second Generation Intel i7-2670QM @ 2.2 Ghz, 8gb of Ram, Nvdia 3gb GT 555M (yes that right GT.. omg Leslie does those things still exists?! ), so I am missing out on lots of big title like The Division, Witcher 3, GTA V, Rainbow Siege (etc etc). So in simple, I am wanting to build a PC for gaming (proper 60fps smoothness) and hopefully to be a VR ready rig. PS: Will be attempting to learn how to Overclock this rig too! 3. Monitors Currently just wanting 1 monitor but might consider dual to triple display in the future. I am planning to use this monitor: Acer XB280HK 28in 4K G-Sync Widescreen Gaming Monitor Hopefully will be gaming on at least 1440p, the reason I go for this monitor is because of its value, G-Sync and 4K resolution. 4. Peripherals/Parts Well this is going to be a RazerTM theme build so the peripherals will be as below: PC Itself*: Case: NZXT H440 Razer Edition Mid Tower Case Motherboard: MSI Z170A Krait Gaming 3X Motherboard CPU: Intel Core i7 6700K CPU Cooler: Cryorig A40 Ultimate Hybrid Liquid Cooler GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 980 Ti Gaming 6GB Boot Drive: Intel 750 Series PCI-Express 400GB SSD Mass Storage Drive: Seagate Barracuda 2TB ST2000DM001 Ram: Corsair Vengeance LPX CMK16GX4M2A2400C14 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 Black (Dual Channel 2400mhz) PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA G2 Gold 850W Power Supply Network: ASUS PCE-AC68 Dual Band Wireless AC1900 PCI-E Adapter Cable Management: CableMod E-Series G2 & P2 Cable Kit Black/Green Windows: Microsoft Windows 10 Home 32bit/64bit USB Flash Drive Estimated Cost: AUD$3000 Peripherals**: Keyboard: Razer BlackWidow Chroma RGB Mechanical Gaming Keyboard Mouse: Razer Diamondback Chroma RGB Laser Gaming Mouse Mouse Pad: Razer Firefly Chroma RGB Hard Gaming Mouse Mat Headphone: Razer Kraken 7.1 Chroma RGB USB Gaming Headset Speaker: Razer Leviathan 5.1 Channel Surround Sound Bar Monitor: Acer XB280HK 28in 4K G-Sync Widescreen Gaming Monitor * I will need an expert/pro to check if all these part will fit with each other/ or if there is any room for improvement/ better parts you recommend. ** I know is a full on Razer theme (and I know some people probably think I am better of with Cosair Keyboard/parts etc etc, but I am trying to stick to a theme on the peripherals, the PC itself is pretty much what I think is within budget. Summary: In simple I just want an second opinion before I go ahead and click the order button and if any kind person would walk me thru if they recommend a first timer building this PC. Constructive feedback appreciated! Will keep you guys posted! Leslie
