  1. Hey everyone, I posted the other day about a few builds I was considering. For my price point and for the PC and all parts considered, I have decided on what PC I will most likely go with. Anyway, I was wondering what kind of performance I could be expecting when I finally end up putting this PC together. In terms of FPS and settings, what do you guys think this PC could do with modern, and perhaps not so modern, games? Thanks for all of the help. Anyway, the link for the build is below. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/QG9ZJ8
  2. Edit: All prices are in Aus - My bad for not doing this sooner Hey, I've been asked by a friend to make a PC for around $3000, although I will probably be only using around $2000. I'm mainly just wanting feedback on the components I've chosen, and any upgrades that should be looked at etc. CPU: Intel I7-4790K @ 4.00 GHZ <---- Thanks for recommendation GPU: Gigabyte GTX 980 4gb <----- Changed due to recommendation MoBo: Asus Sabertooth Z97 Mark1 <--- Looking at changing to "MSI Z97 GAMING 3 LGA1150" Case: NZXT H440 PSU: SeaSonic 750W <---- Changed to 750W Storage: Seagate 3TB + Samsung 850 256GB <---- added more storage Ram: Corsair 16 GB - Vengeance Pro @ 2133MHz <---- Need confirm that this will work This computer will be mainly used for gaming, but some video rendering, Photoshop and auto-cad will be used. I welcome any comments/criticism and will answer any questions. Also, I'm not too experience with ram, will that ram be ok with the MoBo? Thanks in advance, Skwoad
  3. Hey guys, I am new the the PC building world and am planning to build my first one soon. I have chosen the parts but would them looked over by others. Here is the build I put toghether: PCPartPicker part list: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/DPLpFT Price breakdown by merchant: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/DPLpFT/by_merchant/ CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($279.00 @ PCCaseGear) Motherboard: MSI Z97-G55 SLI ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($179.00 @ PCCaseGear) Memory: Kingston Fury Black Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($99.00 @ PCCaseGear) Storage: Intel 520 Series Cherryville 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($135.00 @ PCCaseGear) Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($65.00 @ PCCaseGear) Video Card: MSI Radeon R9 290 4GB TWIN FROZR Video Card ($399.00 @ PCCaseGear) Case: Phanteks Enthoo Luxe ATX Full Tower Case ($179.00 @ PCCaseGear) Power Supply: Corsair CX 600W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ($105.00 @ PCCaseGear) Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (OEM) (64-bit) ($115.00 @ PCCaseGear) Other: Samsung S24D300H 24in Widescreen LED Monito ($169.00) Total: $1724.00 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2014-11-11 07:32 EST+1100 Thanks for the help, Geordan
  4. Hi, I'm new to the forum and trying to get some people's opinions on my current build. I'm looking for a mainstream - high-end pc that will last me a long time. Any improvements and suggestions are highly appreciated, thanks in advance! http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/2ZXTV
  5. Hi all, this is my first post here so go easy! Today I'm trying to price out a PC for a friend. I've selected some parts and played around with them for a few days to try to get the build as cheap as possible. I know my way around, but I'm no expert - for all I know my specifications won't match my own requirements. So I have 2 questions; Will the current specs match the requirements below? Can anything be downgraded while still matching said requirements? Here's the build so far: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/mgrinspan/saved/x68HhM 1. Budget & Location N/A - I'm trying to get the total price down as much as I can without sacrificing too much. Currently the build costs around US$470. 2. Aim The PC will be used for web browsing and light-medium gaming (Fortnite, WoW, LoL). Ideally games will run at 1080p@60 on high settings (but not necessarily max). 3. Monitors Just one monitor - 1080p@60, possibly a second in the future but not necessary to account for that. 4. Peripherals No peripherals, we're replacing an existing computer. 5. Why are you upgrading? Current rig either crashes launching games or won't get more than 5fps if it does. All drivers are up to date. (AMD Athlon II x2 255, 4GB DDR3, NVIDIA Geforce 9200) Thanks!
  6. Hello Everyone! I'm new to the forum and decided to join because I really love LinusTechTips as a channel and after lurking for a bit, I really like the atmosphere and community here. Everyone seems so helpful and knowledgeable! Anyways, enough of the sappy introduction. My current PC is a custom build I made a few years back after watching some build videos. Specs for current PC: CASE- BitFenix Comrade Mid-Tower GPU- EVGA Geforce GTX 950 CPU- AMD Vishera FX-6300 6 Core MOBO- GIGABYTE GA-970A-UD3P RAM- Ballistix Sport 8gb (2x4gb) DDR3 PSU- EVGA 500w 80+ Old PC's Bad Rep At first I was fairly satisfied with it. This PC can play most games I enjoy at medium-high settings with only some framerate drops. Games I normally play would be League of Legends, Overwatch, Garry's Mod, Speedrunners, Skyrim, Payday 2 and PUBG. More recently however I've become slowly less satisfied with performance. I'm starting to get into more demanding games like BF1, Ark and Monster Hunter: World and it's becoming more apparent that my PC can't really keep up anymore. Not only that, I've also had issues where my PC will randomly freeze completely while playing a game, forcing me to hard reset it. This is starting to happen more and more often. I've tried a million different things to try and remedy this problem from updating bios to checking all my drivers and even defragmenting. I've also tried reinstalling the games, reinstalling windows, rolling back graphics card driver updates as well as overclocking and underclocking. This is something that happens randomly (mostly with games like PUBG and Monster Hunter: World, but it's also happened while playing Trine 2 which isn't even really demanding) and I genuinely can't figure out what the source of the problem is. I've ruled it down to either be an overheating issue or my graphics card maybe starting to die. Aside from all of the gaming stuff I'm also getting really into some beefy video editing including 80+ 4k clips; needless to say my PC can barely handle 20 1080p clips without Vegas Pro giving me really laggy previews and horrible performance. Not to mention this is also something that occasionally causes that dreaded freeze. My solution for this is to build a new computer that's as beefy as I can possibly afford with little to no hardware compatibility problems and HOPEFULLY one that won't literally randomly freeze while playing games. I'm aiming to build something that can handle heavy 4k video editing but also be able to run VR, 4k Gaming and all of the most demanding games on high settings with great FPS. My budget is around $1800-$2100 USD I want to have it sooner so the cheaper it is while being able to handle all of this, the sooner I'll be able to afford it. I am however willing to wait a little longer to max out budget if those few hundred dollars really makes a difference performance wise. Current theoretical build that I've made up on PCPartPicker CASE- Be Quiet! Dark Base Pro 900 rev. 2 GPU- EVGA Geforce GTX 1080 Ti 11gb FTW3 CPU- Intel Core i7-8700k 6 Core MOBO- Asus ROG-Strix Z370-E RAM- G.Skill Trident Z RGB 32gb (2 x 16gb) DDR4 PSU- Seasonic PRIME Titanium 600w 80+ Titanium Certified COOLING- Noctua NH-D15 82.5 CFM My Concerns/Queries I want some really great cooling in this system which is why I chose that case and cooler specifically, but I am aware of the fact that the Noctua NH-D15 is pretty massive so I'm worried that it may get in the way of the ram or have some other form of compatibility issue. I also don't like watercooling. I really like that case but i'm not 100% positive it's the best option. I only chose it because it's large and I wanted to be absolutely certain that I had enough space for the cooler. Because of this reason I was very scared of picking a mid size case. I don't want to spend my money and start installing things only to find out something doesn't fit right or that the parts are all cramped up and will cause heating issues. (My current PC is pretty cramped so I'm kinda done with that issue at this point..) Someone tell me of a case that can still fit everything, has good cable management, dust filters and great airflow? Please? Is the processor good enough for all that workload? Will this GPU even play well with the MOBO and CPU?? I don't want the PC to be incredibly loud. My current PC is kinda loud already. Obviously I don't require complete silence but if I leave my computer on at night time I don't want to be listening to a deafening whiny fan noise coming from my PC that is actually LOUDER than my actual fan (Like my current PC). I also work from home taking customer service calls and even though my mic is good at cancelling out background noise, I still would like for the PC to at least be a little quiet lol. My current PC makes quite the bit of noise even when it's idle or not under any heavy load, it's kind of just annoying. I'm REALLY scared that I'll somehow start getting the PC freeze issue again. Especially since I don't really know what it's caused by! Do I have any items that could be replaced with a cheaper option that's just as good if not better? That's really about it. Please give me some recommendations and lengthy replies, I'd love to hear everything and anything you guys have to say! If you actually read this whole post, THANK YOU so much! It means a lot, truly. Link to PCPartPicker Build p.s. for what it's worth, if you think you may know why my current PC is having the whole freezing problem, please let me know. I'm really curious

  8. Forgive my lack of knowledge on this topic. I am hopeful to learn more here. However, from my understanding, more vRAM is better. For example, a GTX 1060 6GB card is better than an RX 580 4GB card, in my mind. However, as I've shown friends, and people on the forum, a few possible builds I have been considering (A i5-8400 and RX 580 4GB build or a Ryzen 1500X and GTX 1060 6GB build), they have been telling me that the i5-8400 build with an RX 580 4GB is better. Why is that? How different are the cards and what makes less vRAM better for a system only running with 8GB of RAM? In my mind, the bigger the buffer between vRAM and RAM, the better which is why I assumed the GTX 1060 would've been the way to go. Someone care to explain to someone new to the space? I am trying to pick the best build for my budget and the video card clearly is a focal point I would think. With that being said, which one would you guys recommend?
  9. Hey everyone, as of the past few months I have been considering building my own PC and I have saved up money in order to do so. If all the stars align, I should get my new PC in about one week. The question is, should I build it myself or buy it form a reputable service such as CyberpowerPC or similar? I've asked around about the different builds I should go with and I am down to a prebuilt and a DIY. I am not at all experienced in troubleshooting possible PC issues. I am pretty new to the PC space as well, only having been a viewer of LTT for about 2 1/2 to 3 months. Should I go with a prebuilt for the basic fact that it has a warranty service on the ENTIRE pc itself and if anything goes wrong I have someone to call? Or should I build it on my own despite my lack of knowledge in the space if anything goes wrong? I mean, I'd like to build it on my own but possible issues I cannot possibly know how to fix could arise. Any insight? Thanks, guys.
  10. Hey everyone. This is my first time posting on the forums after discovering LTT a few months back. Anyway, I am about to build my first PC in about one week. Well, more accurately, I am weighing whether I should build the PC or buy a great PC from Amazon by CyberpowerPC that rocks an i5-8400 and an RX 580. I'll include the link below for your opinions' on which one I should go with. Some have told me the prebuilt is better, which is fine by me, and others have told me the possible DIY build is better. Also, both computers, with everything included, such as a monitor and keyboard, will total to the same price. So I am looking to more experienced tech enthusiasts to help me understand which one is better. The prebuilt is actually a fantastic deal for what is in it especially comparing the same price to CyberpowerPC's on its own website. Please help me out. Thanks. 11. I have a brand new ASRock B-52 m pro4 motherboard I put everything in the way the manual said to and my keyboard and mouse will not light up and the graphics card will not display anything but my phone will plug into the USB and charge
  12. Hey all, I've been playing FH3 and have noticed that my current system is really taking a beating in this game. This is the most intense game I play. I'm at the point where I'm ready to upgrade. I currently have an 850w seasonic psu, an h100i GTX w/ sp120s-so cooling is not an issue-, and I have a corsair 600c. I have ddr4 2133 16GB(2x8GB) and ddr3 1600 16GB (2x4GB, 1x8GB) and will sell whichever set I do not use. I only need a GPU, mobo, and CPU. I have a pretty tight budget of $500, and WILL buy used on eBay, unless it's cheaper on newegg/amazon/jet/etc. I would also appreciate any help on NVidia/amd. I do not want a gtx 970, as that was my last card and it performed below my expectations. I would prefer an overclockable CPU if possible, and I will list my old specs below for a reference of what I have. CPU: xeon X5660 @ 4.4GHz | Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth x58 | GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SUPERCLOCKED note: I have a pcie x1 soundcard, make sure motherboard has slot for it!!! Feel free to ask any questions. Thanks
  13. So I'm thinking of saving some money on a build because I honestly don''t know how much power i'm actually going to use. The prebuilt computer i'm planning to upgrade is a hp pavalon with 4gb of ram, a i3 3220 and a 1tb hdd. So, much card can the i3 handle without becoming the bottleneck? I'm also upgrading ram, psu and putting an ssd for a boot drive. For a gpu I was at least thinking of getting a gtx 950.
  14. so i need a good first build case thats NOT the spec 01. it needs to have filters, usb 3.0 and decent cable management. I don't really care about the looks, as long as someone doesn't mistake it for a dell. Any suggestions?
  15. There's this EVGA psu that's $65 bucks at canada computers and I was wondering how good it is. I think this is a pretty good price cause the seasonic one I was going to go with was 520w and was $80. This would be powering a build with a i5 4460 and a r9380 so I know it's a bit overkill. But if it's not running near the limit it would last a lot longer right? http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=442&item_id=063158
  16. So I am planning on building a new PC and i have a budget of 1000$ CDN. I am mainly going to be using it for video editing and some light gaming. Any suggestions?
  17. Hey guys, I was wondering if you wonderful people on the internet could help me with seeing if my parts are good for my PC gaming/editing build. I am able to go a little higher than the current price but not too high If there's any part of my build I can change and improve on then please say so http://pcpartpicker.com/list/k4FBZ8 CPU-Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor CPU Cooler-Corsair H100i v2 70.7 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler Motherboard-Asus Z170-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard Memory-G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory Storage-Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive, Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive Video Card-Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 8GB G1 Gaming Video Card Case-NZXT S340 (White) ATX Mid Tower Case Power Supply-EVGA 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply Price-1493USD pcpartpicker if needed http://pcpartpicker.com/list/k4FBZ8
  18. Hello everyone! So I will be building a new PC (been playing on PlayStation for quite a while, screw that I am coming home). I will be building it around March, becuase I really want to take my time, I love this planning part! This is my 'default setup' http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/sv7HrH So the question is; i7-4790K ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO Corsair 16GB 1866-2400 DDR3 RAM EVGA Nvidia GTX 980 (future two-way SLI upgrade) OR i7-5820K MSI 99S MPOWER ATX LGA2011-3 Corsair 16GB 2400 DDR4 RAM EVGA Nvidia GTX 980 (future two-way SLI upgrade) Future plans: as mentioned, I will get another GTX 980 and run them in two way SLI mode, in voth cases AND I will get a 4k display later next year and start playing dem games in 4k (I will also get the other GTX 980) So I know that the first option is more than enough for gaming right now, but with the second being the next evolutionary step, with ddr4 and the entry level 6-core, I will have to upgrade sooner or later. Also, if you have anything to say about separate parts, I will be happy to hear it! Thank you guys
  19. Decided to do a sleeper PC with a HP Vectra case. Now... I'm not very good at the whole "micro PC thing" So basically I need a small motherboard (SSD on-board is nice but not required) Decent CPU (quad core, 3-4 GHz) SSD (on-board or not I don't have a preference) I already have CPU cooler (stock Intel cooler), GPU (MSI 1050), HDD, and RAM (Patriot DDR4 8 GB 2x4) Also if anyone knows a good but cheap PCI-Express x16 extension cable let me know No peripherals needed $700
  20. So lately my PC started to thermal throttle and i had a av-z7uh40q001 and I have been surfing the Internet trying to find if it is compatible with my g70a-g/3.1 I have a fx 8350
  21. I want to build a PC using a combination of my own old parts and some new parts. Just to get this out of the way, I do not care about looks or aesthetics. I am ONLY looking for performance. I am looking to build a PC that can both have a decent FPS rate in games (e.g., Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, League of Legends) and can also do some editing work in programs like Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere. For screen resolution, it would either be a 1280 x 720 monitor or 1920 x 1080 monitor, I am not factoring in the monitor yet because the monitor will not be budgeted in this build. My budget is around $150 - $200 CAD, and I live in Canada. I am fine with buying used parts from sites like eBay, Kijiji, and Craigslist, I really just need the performance. The caveat in this build is that I want to try and save some money by using some parts from old desktops that are just lying around in my closet. I have made a Google Doc listing what I am working with (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1xfLf9Rw9K85OCDxFJEE9FiXOPEHWg-zGGhc_DgLZdXA/edit?usp=sharing). I think at best I can use things such as: the case, fans, heatsink, motherboard, hard drives, possibly network card, possibly power supply, and the optical disk drive -- if I put one in my build since those are practically obsolete now. I guess I am mainly looking for a new processor, RAM (I want at least 8 GB for multi-tasking), a GPU, and maybe a power supply depending on how much power-hungry my GPU will be. I also am not sure if doing this will create bottlenecks with other parts in my system. If you have any suggestions, they will be greatly appreciated.
  22. Hey guys, I'm new here and this is my first post so my apologies if anything isn't formatted how its supposed to be (Also doing this via mobile). Also I enjoy tinkering with and building PCs and am trying to learn as much as I can but I'm definitely not a pro and would apprecoate guidance and help especially in terms of tips and what i should get. Anyway I'm upgrading my old PC (which was my first ever build) that I think i did sometime around 2012. I was running an I5 3570K (Stock Cooler) An 650 Ti 16GB DDR3 Ram (I don't recall the speed but its not relevant anyway so im not gonna try and find the packaging) 7TB storage A corsair 700W power supply And a ASRock Z77 Extreme 4 motherboard. I'm a video editor and photographer so as you could imagine video editing was really a pain but in all honesty it held up surprisingly well for gaming and could still run pretty well on high settings in most of the games I played but it was primarily for editing so i needed an update. I decided to get an RTX 2060 and upon installation realized that the CPU was probably bottlenecking the GPU at this point and upon "research" came to the conclusion that my motherboard from 2012 won't support a new CPU so I need a new CPU, cooler for said CPU, Motherboard, and DDR4 Ram. (Also with the release of the RTX 2060 Super at the same price I'm going to return my RTX 2060 and pick up the Super since its been less than 30 days since i got it and there's a 30 day return guarantee) As of now and based on my research i was thinking of getting an I7 9700k And an ASUS ROG Strix Z390-E Gaming LGA 1151 ATX Intel Motherboard Along with whatever decent Ram i can find (hopefully at least 16GB) Now this build upgrade is really pushing my budget to its absolute max. So I was curious what you guys thought about this upgrade. If I should change anything or if it's worth it for the parts I got? I definitely wanna be able to edit 4K and 120fps video without issue if at all possible. And thank you guys for reading through my incredibly long over detailed speil and I appreciate any help, tips, or advice you can give! Again my bad for any formatting issues or misspellings.
  23. I'm putting together my first gaming desktop, so I don't want to deal with any custom watercooling in case I screw up. I'm using an i9900k with a Z390 AORUS Master motherboard so I figured a RTX 2080 ti would fit the bill nicely. I was going to get either the MSI 2080 Ti SEA HAWK EK X or the EVGA RTX 2080 Ti FTW3 ULTRA HYDRO COPPER. But I couldn't tell if these were simply plug and play or if I would have to connect them to a pre-established custom cooling loop, which again, I'm too lazy for lol. I'd like to know if they are self contained or if it would be easier to go with a different option. I'm okay with air cooling, but I thought water cooling would be... cooler. (kill me now) Also quieter is nice. My budget is about $1500 USD. Thanks in advance for any help!
  24. Hey guys, Im planning on building up from my current PC, so I got this drafted out. So far I've purchased the PSU and the GPU. My budget is $500 and since I'm in Malaysia, converted, it becomes MYR2000. I have no plans to overclock. I am running on Windows 10 with a single display. I can't really decide on which MOBO and processor to go with. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/jDfPmG
