I suppose I should mention that this is the first time I will be building my own system. Previous experience extends to replacing a HD and RAM in an old MacBook Pro. Current experience is just online articles and youtube videos (mainly LTT/TQ). I am planning to build a NAS to be used both as a Plex media server and as a jumping off point for future NAS expansion. Therefore, my questions are sort of 2-fold. On the one hand, I would appreciate any assistance/advice on my hardware choices. On the other hand, I'm not sure my theories about how the equipment is used are sound so I would appreciate any corrections on those as well. My desire for a NAS comes from the 1TB SSD in my MacBook Pro being almost completely full for the last 2 years along with wanting to consolidate the 9 external drives I have totaling about 13TB scattered around my house with lots of unused space and duplicate files. First things first, here is what I came up with from PC Part Picker. My desired budget is less than $2000 USD and because of my inexperience, I'd rather buy new and cut down on the things that could go wrong. I'll explain my thought process for some of these: CPU: Intel - Core i5-8400 2.8GHz Turbo Up to 4.0GHz 6-Core Processor ($203.43 @ Amazon) -Looking for room to expand in the future. Was looking at an i3-7350K, but this is only $35USD more expensive and has 4 more cores and double the total score. For now I want for 3+ streams in Plex. From what I've read online, this is way overkill for that (score of ~6000 required for 3 transcoded streams vs. 11000 for the i5). Is there anything that will hurt me with this change if I am willing to pay the extra $35? CPU Cooler: Noctua - NH-L9i 33.8 CFM CPU Cooler ($38.69 @ OutletPC) -Internet says stock cooler should be fine. Is that true with this (presumably small) load? Motherboard: ASRock - H270 Pro4 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($88.89 @ OutletPC) -... It had 6xSATAIII ports and seemed relatively inexpensive Memory: Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory ($184.99 @ Newegg) Storage: Kingston - A400 480GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($144.98 @ Amazon) -Cache drive maybe? I probably won't be changing things often enough to be effected by a failure prior to migration. Storage: Western Digital - Red 4TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive ($132.18 @ OutletPC) Storage: Western Digital - Red 4TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive ($132.18 @ OutletPC) Storage: Western Digital - Red 4TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive ($132.18 @ OutletPC) Storage: Western Digital - Red 4TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive ($132.18 @ OutletPC) -Plan to run in single parity in UnRAID Case: Cooler Master - HAF 912 ATX Mid Tower Case ($59.99 @ B&H) Power Supply: Corsair - CXM 550W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ($59.99 @ Amazon) -Again, looking for a combo of room to grow (currently 275W estimate)/good product/inexpensive Case Fan: Noctua - NF-F12 PWM 55.0 CFM 120mm Fan ($19.39 @ OutletPC) Case Fan: Noctua - NF-F12 PWM 55.0 CFM 120mm Fan ($19.39 @ OutletPC) -The case comes with 2x120mm fans. Is there a noticeable improvement from stock to Noctua? Total: $1348.92USD I initially plan to use UnRAID instead of FreeNAS due to the expandability and ability to mix drive sizes. I also plan to get an adapter to put an internal thumb drive in with the OS on it. Probably use the USB-3 header since the case doesn't have a USB 3 port. It will be connected to my Airport Extreme router via CAT-6 cable I ran through my wall and I plan to access it wirelessly via a MacBook Pro/iOS devices/game consoles or AppleTV (if Plex is available for them). Are there any issues with my part choices/reasoning/expectations? For the second part, down the road I would like to expand out to a Media Server accessible from off my home network, a backup server (for my laptop and another computer I may make down the line), and an individual file server (iPhoto Libraries, individual files, etc). I want them to all have their own drives associated so I can think of them as 3 completely separate disk images. Is this something I would be able to do on a single system by defining User Shares/Sharedrives on more drives through UnRAID or would I need to make a different system for each use? Can I grow into that using the parts I picked and adding more drives and a bigger case/rack mount case? Similarly, if I expand with more drives, how would I power them all? The power supply seems to barely have enough connections for what I'm planning on now. There seem to be at least SATAIII expansion cards for the data connections. I've seen rack mount cases with a backplane that seems to have few power connections. I don't really know what a backplane is, but is that something I could plug all of the drives into and use only a few power and data cables from there to the motherboard? I apologize for the long post from an ignorant newbie, but I greatly appreciate any assistance that could be provided.

Hey gang! I've been yearning for a new gaming PC for a few years now, but because I was waiting for permanent residence in Canada, I couldn't pull the trigger until I knew I wouldn't have to move back home to Ireland. Permanent residence came through in November, and now that Christmas is over, I can afford to start ordering parts. I've put together a build that I hope will suit my needs here: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/TzWKPs I tried to keep everything under $1000 CAD including taxes and shipping, but I have absolutely no clue about whether or not the CPU/GPU/Memory is going to create a bottleneck or simply not work with the components I've chosen. I also understand that using the PSU that comes supplied with the case isn't ideal, but it seems like a good way to shave a few dollars off the cost of everything and I'll upgrade it in future. Ideally, I'd love to be able to upgrade parts bit by bit as money becomes available, but would like to start with something relatively manageable. I'll be playing WOW, Diablo 3 and a little PUBG, as well as some light photo, video and audio editing. 3D modelling and rendering would be a bonus too, but I'll be focusing on low poly stuff. Would the CPU/GPU combo be able to handle that? I'd love to get you guys's opinions on this and maybe an alternative build or substitute parts that you think would be better. Many thanks in advance everyone!

Hey all! o/ Need some game recommendations for a good singleplayer First Person Shooter on the PC that would be good for an absolute beginner to the genre. Wife is interested in trying her hand and insisted on the new Doom as she 'used to be pretty good at classic Doom'... Needless to say much shrieking and flailing about ensued. :-P Is there any simple first person shooter on the PC, preferably singleplayer, that anyone could recommend? Wife is a complete beginner in this genre. She's not much of a gamer, but since she is showing some interest, I want to encourage it. :-)

I am new to this and this is my first build so I'm not completely sure in some things. I am mostly going to use it for gaming, detailed gaming like call of duty ww2, racing games etc. The case and graphic cards cant change cause already have them. I do wanna keep it fairly cheap. What im wondering is how quick it will be? Any bottlenecks? Is it a solid setup? Here is my list: 1. Core i5 - 8600k 3.6Ghz 6 core cpu 2. Asrock fatal 1 z370 professional gamming motherboard 3. Corsair vengeance LPX ddr4 16 gb ram 4. Samsung 850 evo ssd 250 gb 5. Seagate - barracuda 2tb hard drive (2 of them) 6. GeForce gtx 1080 sc gpu ( 2 of them) 8. Thermaltake core x9 case 9. Corsair rmx 850 watt http://(https://pcpartpicker.com/list/w9hpd6) / [Price breakdown by merchant]

Recently I have gotten back into programming, and though I have learned a decent bit of Java in the past, I decided to give C++ a try. I've found basic tutorials and such online from people such as Thenewboston, but many of them are fairly out of date it seems, or extremely uninteresting. I was curious, where do many others learn these languages when not in school for it? Any suggestions would be much appreciated! (If its a specific youtube video, a link would be great too!)

Hello LLT forum! Yesterday I received my brand new H105 AIO from Corsair. Since this is my first time dealing with AIO's i followed the instructions in the manual and everything appeared to be normal. However when the computer is on, the cooler is making this strange buzzing sound which is very audible, The AIO is connected to the CPU MB header, and both its fans are connected into PWN headers on the MB. Do you guys have any suggestions on how to remove this buzzing sound? EDIT : The cooler is doing a good job, all cores are sitting on 29-30 degrees celcius whilst idle.

I was wondering if anyone could help me plan out a home server. I'm no stranger to PC building, but networking isn't something I work with often. I was looking for something I can access via any device connected to my home WiFi and Ethernet, and also when I'm not at home for streaming movies, accessing files, etc, much like Linus has shown in videos that his home server is capable of. My basic needs/info: - Stream and access files from any connected device in home - Stream and access from my phone and laptop when I'm not at home - Simplicity and size, if I have to start messing with rack mounts and LSI controllers and all that, I'm gonna be a little frustrated - Cost: My budget is about $700 USD, but slightly over is fine, and I'm very open to upgrade paths of roughly $800 each year So yeah. That's the info I have, and I have no idea where else to start. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, I'm thinking of building a PC for my girlfriend but I don't know anything about shopping for parts. I was thinking of building a gaming PC for myself a while back but then I saw my girlfriend struggling on her macbook pro. She is in to photography and is trying to make a buck out of it. The only problem is that het Macbook Pro isn't really suited for the work she bought it back when she wasn't that serious about photography). It only has 4 gigs of RAM so it slows to a crawl every time she works in photoshop with fairly large files. For the meantime I offered her to switch laptops with me (my macbook pro is a bit more beefy), but sooner or later i'm going to need my laptop back. I want to help her out and build a PC where she can edit het photo's on (and so i can have my laptop back). She uses Lightroom and Photoshop. I think she will want to do very basic video editing down the line (but nothing to serious). The PC must be cheap as we don't have a lot of money to throw around. However, it should perform adequately in photoshop. I'd rather spend a bit more instead of cheaping out and end up with unusable hardware. After all, it's here dream we're talking about. On a side note: It would be awesome if it could be used for some light gaming down the line. I'm not a heavy gamer, but it would be nice if the system could run some games if I slap a graphics card in there whenever I have the cash to spoil myself a bit.

Hello, i'm rather new to PC builds and such. I've done extensive research on how to actually build PC's (LinusTechTips and Youtube). For about five years, I've been running with a PC that i got from TigerDirect and it is time for an upgrade, though it runs well and such, my CPU gets up to 70% when watching a youtube video in 1080P, let alone the wondrous 4K video Linus and his team puts out. Current Rig * No Name Motherboard, Single Channel Ram * Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4670 CPU @ 3.40GHz * MSI Computer Corp. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti Gaming OC 2GB GDDR5 VGA/DVI/HDMI PCI-Express Video Card N750TI TF 2GD5/OC (Copied that from amazon after noticing that the label on the side of the card says MSI. Found it pretty easy since i no some of it) * 1TB Hard Drive (Very Little Space Left) * 500W Power Supply * Windows 8.1 Operating System I know that my graphics card is decent, though i would like to get a stronger one with my next rig, and is is possible to combine the one i have currently, with a new, more powerful graphics card? But what i would truley like help with is picking parts for my next build. I'm hoping to get this case and most likley will (Link). But i'm also looking at this case (Link). Most likley going to go with the first case though since it has 4 USB 3.0 Ports and i need two of those ports for my keyboard, another for my mouse and the last one for my headset. If at any and all possible can i receive some assistance in building my new rig? I would like it to be able to handle 4K and VR if needed(Not Necessary Though). Currently i have a lot of games on my steam account that i cannot play since my processor cannot handle it. Take 'The Witcher 3' as an example, as even on the lowest settings, the game can only run at max 20-30FPS. It would be extraordinarily wonderful if i could receive some help from all you wonderful people in coming up with and building my new rig. Please do keep in mind though that i don't want to build a 10-15K computer, and would like to keep it arguably affordable to the average man. But most of all, i would like all the parts to work well with one another, as i know that just putting all the highest tier parts together, won't allow you to come out with a computer that works well. Anyways, i do thank whomever decided to read this much and whomever helps me out.

Hey there! I am currently planning a new system. Relevant parts to put in the custom loop (will be my first one!): i7 7700K 1080Ti FE I am having an eye on the EK A240G. I am quite sure that the 240mm rad alone won't be enough. Now comes the tricky part. I am in love with the aesthetics of the NZXT S340 Elite. This can fit a 240mm in front and a 120mm (EK support told me they will release a 120mm alu rad today) in the rear position. The components will be subject to overclocking. I want to go for 4,8-5,0Ghz on the i7 (depending on my luck with the silicon lottery) and 2100MHz core on the 1080 Ti. Questions 1 & 2 Has anyone any experience with the S340 Elite (or non-Elite which should be the same cooling-wise)? Will this be enough cooling capacity for the components to stay cool at their respective levels? My plan B would be a NZXT H440 which can fit a 360 in front and top which should be enough. I could get a A240G + 360mm rad expansion for that. But I don't like the small windows and the restrictive airflow with the drive cage on the right. I would need to drill this one out and then there is not much space to mount the reservoir and....well. It would be a plan B. Question 3 If anyone can point me to a case with tempered glass on ONE SIDE (looking at you phanteks evolv tg - who would want the "managed" cables to be seen through glass?!), preferably available in white, as much alu and steel and as little plastic as possible and the clean aesthetics of the s340 elite...I'd appreciate to have a plan B2 Greetings!

Hello everyone, It has been over 2 years since I got my lenovo y 50-70 gaming laptop, a one trick pony that allowed me to do school and play when nothing interesting was happening in class. But with change, I have become to work more from home here in Canada. My work mostly revolves around working with spread sheets, carrying out calculations and very heavy multitasking (to the point that even my laptop and the 950 evo pro I put has trouble working on 6 applications at once) but I am still a gamer at heart and have an ever increasing library of steam games, both mainstream (Overwatch, Dota 2) and demanding titles like GTA 5, Fallout 4, Metro Series. Always wanted to have a PC that would be able to run games at max or close to max with no compromise but still be able to handle work process and huge data spreadsheets and data analysis. As for the monitors I currently have an ACER G247HYL, I bought just to run it as a dual setup with my laptop, I am looking to still use a dual set up at some later time with this new pc but the new monitor would be over 60hz and WQHD perhaps. As for the peripherals I am already set with a Razer Balckwidow Ultimate Mechanical Keyboard (very pleasurable to write with) and basic wireless mouse which I am looking to upgrade to a Razer Death Adder or something along that lines, just because of matching looks and because of the integrated macro feature (very useful for repetitive work). My upgrade reason is that I want to and I have the chance to do so. Ok, so my budget is $2300 before tax expecting the tax to run at 13% of that amount, maybe less. Not factoring in the shipping. There is no budget set out for a CPU cooler and case as I will have it as a gift. But more on that later. CPU: Core i7 7700K MotherBoard: Asus - Strix Z270F ATX LGA1151 Memory: Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16gb (2*8) DDR4-3200 Storage: Samsung - 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5'' SSD Seagate - Barracuda 3TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Drive Video Card: GeForce GTX 1080 Ti STRIX Corsair - CSM 650W 80+Gold Semi-Modular ATX Link: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/h3sw2R Case and Cooler: Deepcool Genome ROG Cert. Ed. (Can any1 confirm if you can mount a 1080ti card into this chassis?) Need some suggestions on some fans to go in the front both bought from Canada Computers if possible. There is also a matter of fact if using one supplier is better than multiple ones, (maybe use newegg and use up the 30 day trial). Any thouhgts and inputs on this build are highly appreciated, Thank you all

Hey, guys so I've just received my parts for my first pc, well most of them. Things I didn't get is GPU and monitor. So I was thinking can I boot my pc using my laptop as a monitor. My friend got me some cheap GPU just so I can actually boot it up. Here is the build I am using https://pcpartpicker.com/list/X3ZK9W Also, can you help me with which drivers I need to download and install because I don't have a DVD drive so the discs that I received are of no use.

Hi, i am looking for any suggestions on what i should change/add in my build so far. So far i have bought my case, power supply, and motherboard. I do have wiggle room for my budget. CPU: Ryzen 5 1600 i am not sure whether i should get this or the 1600X because i want the fan with the 1600 but my friend told me id need to spend extra on an aftermarket fan anyway and should go with the 1600X. CPU Cooler:Corsair H60 54.0 CFM CPU liquid cooler Motherboard: Asus prime X370-A Memory:Crucial - Ballistix Sport LT 8GB im going to be honest i dont really know too much about ram and can use some help Storage: 240GB SanDisk SSDplus and 1TB wd blue HDD Video Card: any gtx 1060 3gb after prices return to normal Is it worth it to go to the 6gb version? Case:Corsair Spec-alpha black Atx mid tower I want a decent sized gaming monitor for less than 300 and decent peripherals. Build list :https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Z6y9m8

So I'm looking to upgrade my entire setup and found these CPUs: Intel Core i5-7640X which says it has 2 memory channels, does that mean I can only have 2 sticks of RAM? The other CPU is the Intel Core i7-7800X Skylake-X. Which CPU should I get? Also I want to liquid cool, any suggestions for beginners? Last question, would this motherboard be a good fit: ASUS PRIME X299-A?

I'm looking for a good book to learn C++ programing language. I am about to start third year in college doing computer science and next semester we will start learning C++ in the software development class. The first two years we learned Java so I'm familiar with some programing concepts. What is the best book to give me a jump start in C++ before the semester starts?

Hi, I'm building my first PC in a few days and wanted to cool my CPU with an AIO... Then I saw the EK A240G and thought about getting it, since it doesn't make a difference price-wise. My only questions are: Would you recommend to do a custom loop with such little experience in PC-Building? And would you recommend this kit to a Beginner?
