Hello all, I am a 17 year old Asian student living in Australia right now. Frustrated with my outdated 6 year old Lenovo Thinkpad, my parents have offered to purchase a new laptop for my final year of secondary school. They said that they offer a maximum budget of $1500 AUD, but I can add some funds from my own part-time job so probably max looking like $2000 AUD. I am looking for a recommendation for a laptop that is: Within $1500 to $2000 AUD Able to get in Australia Something that is capable of doing work well, chill on and game on too. Only game I will play is CS GO really Something that has good-specs, good CPU and memory Preferably has a separate GPU but integrated is fine as long as it can run CS GO (XD) RN I'm leaning towards a Dell Inspirion 7000 15 Gaming, but I would like other input. Thank you, I would research more myself but I would like to hear from seasoned veterans in the technology field. Thank you again.

Hi, I just arrived in Melbourne all the way from Mexico. I'll be staying here for about 5 years to study Automotive Engineering at RMIT, but the thing is that I don't know anyone here, and I've been kind of lonely for the last couple of days. So... anyone want to hang out?

Good afternoon all! It's amazing how far along the forum has come over the years, I'm looking forward to getting back into the discussions! My question to the forum is about a venture I want to dive into but I need some advice before I get the ball rolling. I'm not sure if everyone remembers this video. When I first saw this video I was in love with the concept, we don't have anything like it in Melbourne. I've wanted to start a cafe for a while and I've finally started doing thorough research into it's viability, I have a friend who is an amazing chef with a great deal of experience in the industry. I want to combine my love of technology/gaming culture with my obsession over simple, tasty food. I want to start out small and use the main lounge as an area for consumption and socialising with a small room designed to be hired out with items like projectors and consoles, slowly expanding as funds allow. Am I crazy? I'm not in it for profit, aslong as I can pay the bills and have some funds left over for the holiday savings. It would be great if some Australians shared their insight but any contribution would be greatly appreciated. Take care everyone, hope everyone is enjoying their year so far! Ryan

I want to build a pc in Australia for around $1500 - $1700 AU. I was wandering what your guys thoughts were on my possible build. I play Call of Duty Infinite Warfare, Battlefield 1, Battlefield Hardline, Battlefield 4 and Grand Threft Auto V. I was thinking about getting a gtx 1070 because games are now at recommending a gtx 1060 6GB and I want this computer to be future proof. If you don't think this is a good build could you please tell me what would be? I was also wandering if it was worth me getting an ssd/m.2 or if it was worth getting a sli motherboard. Intel i5 6500 $269 MSI Z170A Gaming M5 $249 Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory $115 MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Gaming X 8GB Video Card $669 Toshiba 2TB 7200RPM HDD $93 NZXT S340 Elite Matte Black/Red ATX Case, no PSU $149

Building a new rig to replace my Metabox (Clevo) gaming laptop from 2011. I started off working on specs to run the HTC Vive nicely and keep me gaming at max settings on regular games for a good number of years to come. Then I got attracted to all the glowy lighting options and glass sided cases and ended up throwing an extra AUD$500 into making it look pretty. Parts were delivered yesterday, but I wasn't home to receive them, so I'm picking them up from the post office today. Won't have time to start building it until Sunday anyway though. Until then, I'm still trying to decide on fan and radiator configuration and placement within that case, so if anyone has advice on that aspect, feel free to jump in. Case comes with two 140mm fans (1 in front and 1 in back). Cooler comes with two 140mm fans for the radiator. Thinking of installing them on top of the radiator to pull air up through it and out the top of the case, but I'm open to having the radiator in the front instead if I need to for space or aesthetic reasons. Mobo and GPU both have ASUS Aura RGB lighting, so I was thinking I'd put the three 120mm Corsair RGB fans in the front of the case to give an even spread of lighting, or alternatively, put one of them at the back and only one or two of them at the front. I wonder if I can fit two 120mm and one 140mm fan into the front?

So I heard of this the other day and Australia doesn't get much news at all in this space. Anyway, there has been some info about Uber Trialing airport shuttling with flying vehicles in Melbourne. Other than just being interesting in the tech space it should be great as a method for relieving congestion which is apparently a huge issue in Melbourne The plan so far is to have pickup areas called "Sky-Ports" and a trip from the CBD to the airport is going to be under $90 (AUD so ~$62.15 USD). There is also talk of pursuing these trials in Dallas and Los Angeles. The West article ABC article

I'm beginning a Master of Computer Science degree next year, and would like to buy a laptop now in preparation. I live in Australia and have a budget of ~$2000AUD, but I am happy to pay a bit more if there is something that has a lot more value for the cost. As i'll be using it for uni, i'd like some decent battery life, and not to be super heavy so that I can move it around. I'm looking for something that has a dedicated GPU, with hopefully the ability to be used as portable VR in the future if it's within budget constraints. Some of the options i've been looking at so far are the Lenovo Y540 (https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/legion-laptops/lenovo-legion-y-series/Lenovo-Legion-Y540-15/p/81SXCTO1WWENAU1/customize?), Y740 (https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/81UHCTO1WWENAU3/customize?guid=865d3e57-032f-4246-a1f5-1217790edc25&options_11=), and MSI P65 Creator 8RE (https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Notebooks/Workstation-Laptops/74509-P65-Creator-8RE-048AU) The Y540 looks great for the price, but i'm a little worried about the display not being very bright, is this something I should be concerned about? Does the P65 8RE have any build quality issues? I'd love any advice on the choices above, or if there are any better value alternatives that I should be considering! Thanks for your help!

Original Source: https://www.kotaku.com.au/2019/08/dayz-pc-ps4-xbox-one-banned-completely-australia/ IARC is the acronym for the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC), See the bottom of the post for a link to further information on Australia's rating / classification system. It seems bizarre that the board is ok with extreme violence in movies and video games, but if there is some weed as a reward for completing an objective results in a instant ban. While personally I don't play DayZ, I am fearful as to what precedent this will set for future games, such as Cyberpunk 2077 which showed inhalers being used as drugs in the hour long gameplay video last year. From what I've personally experienced, drug use (as a reward or incentive) or rape results in a instant ban. As an example Hotline Miami 2 was banned due to the rape scene (and still is banned). This wikipedia link has a list of games currently banned in Australia (and games that we're once banned that have been overturned since). The link also has a nice summary of what type of content may cause a 'refused classification' to be given. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_banned_video_games_in_Australia Here's a handy dandy link to the Australian Classification Board's explanation of their ratings: http://www.classification.gov.au/Guidelines/Pages/Guidelines.aspx

Hi all, I am currently trying to buy a PowerEdge R610 in Australia but have currently been unsuccessful in finding a bare-bones server with no RAM or CPU's in it or just an R610 server in general that is actually priced correctly/ decently. Does anyone know of any PowerEdge R610 servers that are for sale in Australia that are cheapish??

Hi all, So I live in Australia, and I don’t yet have nbn (what a surprise). I’m still on an ADSL connection, and we recently moved houses and got a new modem. While connecting and testing the network, I had a quick look at the splitter/filter that plugs into the wall outlet. As it turns out, the in/out ports on the splitter are pretty weird, at least to me. They fit an RJ45 connector, but they only have 4 contacts in the port (Is 8P4C a thing?). But, RJ11 connectors are used for phone lines and ADSL connections. So telstra have little plastic inserts that convert the RJ45 into an RJ11. What is the point of all this conversion even though there’s only 4 contacts in the port!?

Hey guys, I am a jazz trombonist and am starting to sing and wish to record both singing and trombone. I am a student and can only spend about $110 AUD on a mic and audio interface. I have already chosen an audio interface, the Behringer u-phoria um2x2 for $65 AUD. Should I go with this the BM-700 for $49 AUD or this the berhinger xm8500 for $38 AUD? My thoughts on the BM-700 is apart from a XLR-XLR cable I wont have to buy anything but it could be a bit hit and miss with quality. My thoughts on the xm8500 is it is a name brand with good quality but I will have to wait and save and up some more money before I can get it cause ill have to get a xlr cable, stand and pop filter. What are your thoughts? EDIT: I’m going to start a poll

Hello everyone. I recently built my first PC, but it's looking a little bland and empty inside, so I'm looking for some recommendations on case fans and cables. The case I have is the Cougar MX330-G (Tempered Glass). I'm in Australia and aiming for a purple aesthetic and trying to keep a low budget ~$200AUD Attached are some parts I've already looked at on Amazon (Prime) as well as a picture of the PC Case. Any feedback is helpful! Thanks

Australia - Programming, Graphic Design and Motion Design Build What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using. Planning to use it for programming, graphic design and motion design. Programs include Visual Studio, VS Code, Adobe CC (in particular, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Premiere). I would like to be able to do some casual gaming but not essential. What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes? AU~$2500-2750 When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy. Within the next 6 months. What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (Tower/OS/monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc) I already have a mouse and 2x 1080p monitors. I just need the case and everything inside of it. Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location? Mackay, Australia Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU? I would eventually overclock down the line Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc) I would prefer for it to be a Micro ATX system with a Ryzen 2700x, NVME M.2 SSD and then a 2TB hard drive for storage purposes Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference? No Extra info or particulars: I'd like to have the ability to upgrade parts in the future. The cost needs to be in AUD!!!

so here is a little story for some people to look at. https://www.cnet.com/news/kellyville-green-box-represents-everything-wrong-with-australia-internet-speeds-nbn/ the slogan was "faster internet for all of Australia" but im pretty sure the fine print said "unless you are one of those 2nd-3rd rate citizens that is in rural areas, then you can just burn for 4 months straight. here is the fun thing, at home we are paying $70 a month for 350Gb of data at 3.5Mbps. an when we go over we get hit with a 128kbps shaping. we pay more for data because... we live out of town. so apparently that means we dont get the unlimited data plans because..im guessing they have to stamp an mail the data manually... more over we get slow speeds AND its constantly being interrupted Or slowed further, sometimes for hrs... sometimes for months on end. this is what its like to live with rural australia internet (or at least in my area). we have had our house line zippy tied to a star-post for 3yrs now. we can not get a even remotely decent deal. satellite costs are bad. especially with the ridiculous on peak data caps we arent going to get the NBN 3Kms out of town because we arent worth it. BUT we can get NBN satellite... which last i checked Telstra was going to charge $150 for 100GB. so i have a few things to put out there an ask. In 2020 are Shaping speeds less than 1Mbps acceptable. 128kbps struggles to open a generic google search. is data caps of 60Gbs+140Gbs (60 between 7am-1am and 140 between 1am and 7am) somewhat predatory, (this is mostly designed to drive people to buy the more expensive package because they are using up 1/4 of their data when they are awake.) and Should customers have complete access to their purchase when ever they want ? (to me this is like buying fuel for my bike\car but only being able to use 1/4 of it during typical wake time and having to buy bigger fuel tank if i want to drive\ride more during this time) anyways be happy to hear what other peoples internet is like. surely cant be worse than what we have here.

Hi, I'm not typically one for buying a laptop as I've always been a PC gamer, but I feel like it calls for it now. I'm in Australia but moving overseas for a number of months, perhaps years, who knows, and I don't fancy shipping my big pc setup overseas and between apartments. I took a look at the main pinned thread of gaming laptops, but I found there's lots of American products and pricing going on there. I'm looking for a Gaming laptop, from what I can buy in Australia (Adelaide). I don't specifically have a price range; I'm trying to keep it low, but still get good performance out of it. Finding that sweet spot. But lets say $1800-2500 AUD. Running games like Overwatch, Witcher, some low demanding games, etc. Doesn't need to be max graphics. I've had good experience with MSI and ASUS products, so that was going to be my 'go-to' from JBHIFI, Dicksmith, MSY, other local computer stores. Any suggestions/ thoughts would be helpful! Thanks

Hello, I've been planning a home NAS build and found some builds using the NZXT H440. It seems like that case is very close to my personal *best* case compromise between available capacity, size, drive cooling etc. Unfortunately it seems to be discontinued. Has anybody seen a good alternative? The main features I'm looking for are: - 8 or more 3.5" HDDs - all HDD's MUST be well cooled (ie. direct blast from a fan) - *relatively* compact, no bigger than the H440 is. Approximately 51 x 22 x 47.6 cm OR 20 x 9 x 19 inches. - dust resistant - budget of AU$200. Open to minor upgrades over time. I'm located in Australia, not keen on importing. This NAS will be in hot weather (easily 40 deg C or 104 deg F) during the summer. I've spotted the Phanteks Eclipse P400A, which SEEMS to have similar features, but requires a separate purchase of those drive cages. From videos it appears the front fans may interfere with the drive cage installation? Thanks all.

Hello, I’m new to the world of home servers so I’m looking for someone to check my homework. I was inspired by the Brian’s Econonas 2019 build. Dear Mods: if this is better suited for the New Builds and Planning forum, please move it there. 1. Budget & Location I’m located in Australia. My parts choices are based on what I’ve been able to find at my local store and I prefer to use commonly available parts. Budget of AU$700 (EDIT: ~ US$470) without drives. Open to small upgrades over time. 2. Use Case NAS for home file storage servicing 4 home users. Plex (if possible, eventually transcoding 3 x 1080p streams with ease). Resilio Sync (very important to me). SabNZB. Probably going with unRAID. (unlikely Plan B = Windows Server). Will be deployed with 5 X 8TB (2 of which are parity) drives and a 500 Gb cache SSD. Will eventually upgrade to 8 X 8 TB (2 of which are parity) drives and a 500 Gb mirrored cache + SSD for Plex metadata. Hoping it will last me 5-10 years. I want to experiment with running a Windows VM on this (among other tinkering), to potentially consolidate this NAS with my mom’s PC. But I haven’t looked too deeply into this aspect yet. Also, Folding@Home? This will sit in our home office with very tight space – the case I’ve selected is the biggest it can be. Silence is appreciated, but direct HDD cooling is paramount during hot weather (easily 40 deg C or 104 deg F). Dust resistance appreciated. 3. Parts List Case: Antec P101 Silent ($135) CPU: Ryzen 3200G ($145) Mobo: ASUS B450 Prime ($149) RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 8Gb ($69) PSU: Corsair RM650x ($169) TOTAL (before unRAID license, SATA cables and PCIE to SATA card): $667. P.S. Any recommendations for a good quality PCIE to SATA card are appreciated. Looking forward to your feedback. Thanks guys.
