Hi. I am looking at buying a decent Windows 10 laptop with 8GB RAM, 500GB-1TB Hard Drive (Preferably an SSD), 15" screen, an i5/i7 from like 2.5GHz+ and a proper GPU (we don't need any of that Intel HD Graphics sh!t here). Ideally, I would like for it to cost anywhere from $800AUD under. I am still a student and am therefore stuck for cash. I want to abandon my current MacBook. Look at my previous post in this subthread for that post. Thanks again, Alpha.

Hi. I have a mid-2010 MacBook (model A1342) with a 120GB SSD and 4GB RAM. I would like a speed increase as the C2D processor is really holding me back. The only real option for me right now is to get a secondhand MacBook Pro (2010 i5s to 2012 i5s). These Pro's had 4GB RAM and most had the stock 500GB HDD. I'm not sure if it is actually worth it as the main reason I'm buying into the Apple market again is for the fact that my school requires you to have a MacBook. Thanks, Alpha.

Hello tech people! I'm pretty new to custom pc builds and all the components, as I've finally saved up some money to build my first PC! (yay) I've done some research over the build guides and what not and chose out components that were appealing to me. Just some background information to get an idea of stuff, I live in Australia, Melbourne. my budget is around $2000 and waiting for Christmas sales, where hopefully prices will drop down a bit. (Prices in America are so much better T^T). I'm more of a casual gamer, games such as titan fall, league of legends, and some mmorpg games like guild wars 2. As well for simple browsing and video watching. Anyway, the colour theme I was going for was white, I wouldn't mind mixing in some other colours, but preferably white. Currently I have these components on my list: CPU: AMD FX-8320 3.5GHz 8-Core Processor Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 ATX AM3+ Motherboard Cooling: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury White 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 SSD: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive Hard drive: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Video card: MSI GeForce GTX 960 2GB Video Card Power supply: Corsair CX 430W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply Case: Aerocool GT-A-White ATX Case Monitor: LG 25UM57-P 60Hz 25.0" Monitor Operating system: Microsoft Windows 8.1 OEM (64-bit) - $120 Everything here adds up to around $1800 give or take, I'm not sure about whether to have good overclocking capabilities. please don't hesitate if you wish to change or add anything to the list, I'm open to suggestions. I would really appreciate it if you guys took the time to help me out here, much thanks in advance!!

Hi, I'm mostly decided on parts, so I just want to make sure that my plan is not stupid and to make sure that there aren't any sales or hardware releases or anything similar I should be worrying about (I plan to start getting stuff mid November). So for context: Why am I doing this? Basically I just wanted to build a computer. This would be my first build and I would be upgrading from a laptop. Why mITX? I'm not sure, but I really like the idea of a tiny gaming PC and I'm willing to put up with the challenges of working with the form factor. Why am I spending this much on a first time build? Also no idea, but if I look deep down, the reasons are probably irrational. Budget & Location I'm in Australia, with a budget around $2000 +/- $300 ($AUD). Cost includes a copy Windows but excludes peripherals (no peripherals required at this point). Aim As the title said, it's a personal gaming rig. I also want it to run as quiet as possible (or at least while idle/ working with MS Office). Because of where I live, dust and heat are mild concerns and I'm happy to lower my performance expectations to ensure that the rig is not obnoxiously loud. Otherwise, I was hoping to max out (or get close to it) the settings on DA: Inquisition, GW2 and SW Battlefront, whilst maintaining ~60fps. Also aiming to run The Witcher 3 at medium-high and hoping to be able to run Star Citizen (actually I'm less worried about SC, but it would be nice to run that game smoothly). I'm not sure if I'll do any overclocking, but it would be nice to try. Monitors Original plan was to run it on a 1080p monitor for gaming (with additional monitors for productivity), but I'm very tempted by 3440x1440, so the plan has been tailored to a run games at 1440p. If it makes a difference, this PC will most likely begin life pushing pixels on a 1080p TV. The Build Disclaimer: This build is neither optimised for power, value or quietness. It's a random mish-mash of my values/ things I want in a pc, so some of the part choices are pretty random and more due to personal preference, but I'm open to any advice if you have any CASE - Enthoo Evolv mini ITX MOTHERBOARD - Gigabyte Z170N-Wifi CPU - i5 6600K COOLER - Noctua NH-D15 RAM - 16GB (2x8 GB) Kingston HyperX Fury DDR4 GPU - GTX980 (Asus or MSI, whichever ends up being cheaper) PSU - Cooler Master V650 DRIVES - 250GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD and WD 2TB HDD (or whatever is cheapest at time of purchase) OS - Windows 10 Total Cost: ~$2300 (Hope those links work) As mentioned above, some part choices are irrational due to personal preference and I just wanted to make sure this plan is not completely stupid, but as a first time builder, I'll listen to any advice. Also thanks in advanced **You can probably stop reading here** Additional Notes Wifi is a must. Otherwise I just picked the Z170N wifi because it's available I know the NH-D15 is probably overkill, but it costs similar to buying a pair of NF-AF14s and sticking them to a Hyper 212X. It also happens to be cheaper than most comparable water cooling solutions ( I think) The GTX980 (not the ti) is because it performs significantly better than the GTX970 and its TDP is only 20W higher than the GTX970, so I'm hoping that a GTX980 will give perform better for minimal additional heat production. I haven't considered AMD probably because I'm being prejudiced I know nothing about RAM other than more is (usually) better, DDR3 is not DDR4 and that mITX boards only have two RAM slots

1. Budget & Location Location: Australia Budget:Around 1600 AUD 2. Aim I'll be using it mostly for gaming. I have a laptop that I do the majority of my work, web browsing, movie watching etc. at them moment. I don't need to store any pictures of videos on the PC as I have them on my laptop. The games I want to play include Blizzard's new Overwatch, Star Wars battlefront and new AAA titles coming out in the future.I'll also probably be playing LoL and CS:GO to some extent but I don't see them pushing my system. Also although my budget is relatively fixed at the moment, I want to be able to upgrade in the future. 3. Current Parts List PCPartPicker part list: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/7j24zy Price breakdown by merchant: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/7j24zy/by_merchant/ CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($275.00 @ PCCaseGear) Motherboard: MSI B85-G43 GAMING ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($145.00 @ PCCaseGear) Memory: Kingston HyperX Fury Red 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory ($66.00 @ Centre Com) Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($135.00 @ CPL Online) Video Card: MSI Radeon R9 380 4GB Video Card ($355.00 @ CPL Online) Case: NZXT H440 (Black/Red) ATX Mid Tower Case ($179.00 @ CPL Online) Power Supply: Silverstone Strider Plus 600W 80+ Bronze Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($109.00 @ Umart) Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Home OEM (64-bit) ($145.00 @ CPL Online) Monitor: Samsung S22D300HY 60Hz 21.5" Monitor ($149.00 @ Centre Com) Keyboard: Thermaltake CHALLENGER PRIME Wired Gaming Keyboard ($45.00 @ Mwave Australia) Total: $1603.00 4. Monitors I'll need to buy a monitor. I've settled on a 1080p Samsung monitor but I'm open to anything else to be honest. 5. Peripherals I just need to buy a keyboard because the one I currently have is falling apart. My current mouse and headphones are fine. I do need an operating system. Where should I be buying it from? 6. Why are you upgrading? Currently I'm using a Macbook Air, which is great for word-processing, web browsing etc. but when it comes to gaming, it's not optimal.

Australian researchers at the University Of New South Wales have announce a new breakthrough that could bring viable quantum computing closer to reality, they have developed a quantum programming language that can take advantage of the quantum effect in quantum chips. Professor Andrea Morello, project leader, told The Sydney Morning Herald, "The advancement proves that we can write the most unique type of computer code that a quantum computer can support," "In other words, we have now shown that we can access the full 'quantum vocabulary' He further stated, "Things become more interesting when you have two quantum bits, like in the case of our experiment: there you can write '00', '01', '10','11' [like in an ordinary computer], but also combinations of them, like '00 + 11', '01 + 10', and so on," Morello says. It's not all good news however. Professor Andrew Greentree of RMIT University told Fairfax Media that this is by no means a silver bullet, "They've looked at entanglement between two spins on the same atom: one the spin of phosphorus nucleus, and the other the spin of a lone electron attached to the atom," he said. "This is not scalable, because the phosphorus really doesn't have any more spins. What they need is to entangle one phosphorus with the next phosphorus atom," Regardless, this is still viewed as an important step to bring quantum computing closer to reality. Hey guys, I've recently been in the hunt for a new PC case. I want to show off my build as well as possible. I've been interested in the Lian-li PC-O8 and the PC-O7s but I haven't really been so interested in the price tags (like $500-$600 AU). I'm looking for something very sleek and premium looking (most preferably with glass or similar). Though I do want to keep it under the $400 AU mark. My system isn't absolutely insane but I really do just kinda like to look at it. The colours of the components I've got now aren't really coordinated in any way, so I'm thinking of doing some quick little paint jobs to fix that. Want to go blue and red, so I will get a new set of red hyperx ram to match the these instead of the lower speed set in there now. So yeah. Any suggestions would be awesome. My system specs are all listed in the link below on PCPartPicker. Excuse the case as that's what I want to upgrade. http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/PJpnYJ It should be noted though. I was hoping to upgrade later on to a second 390, but I am waiting to see the new gen of the 980ti teir before purchasing as I may sell my 390 in favour of the new card. Current 390 is 300mm long.

Sorry, no idea which forum to post this, I'm in Melbourne's south eastern suburbs, and built my first PC just over a year ago and really want to try more with building PC's. I'd love to build my own case or desk and watercool a PC in it, but having 0 experience with these things, and not wanting to fry $100's-$1,000's of PC parts would love if someone was building a Watercooled PC, and would allow me to come watch, assist, just to get some idea on how the whole process works. Thanks in advance

Where can I get a Finalmouse in Australia? + Is the Steelseries Rival 300 CS:GO Fade any good and is it too big for my hands? (Mine are small)

I have around $1000 - $1400 AUD, What are the best pc parts I can buy? Also, where can I get them cheap? I live in Victoria, Australia

I just built a new system in Brisbane, Australia and I have no idea whether I need to water cool or not. System specs are as follows: Skylake 6600k @4.1Ghz Idling at around 32C (maxes at around 65-70C) 2X GTX 970 Asus Turbos Idling at around 34C for the bottom card and 36C for the top card (maxes at around 80C) My issue is that I just have stock fans and I have added another 2 fans to just blow outside air to my GPUs. The issue is taht my house has no air-conditioning and is normally around 25-28C. I have been looking at getting liquid cooling for the GPUs because they seem to be hammered the most. I can play Witcher 3 at Ultra settings with 40-50fps and High at 60fps which is awesome but I keep Afterburner open in the background, constantly checking to see temps. They always hover around the 79-80C mark for my GPUs and I feel that's just because that's the temp limit that's set in Afterburner. One thing that seems to work is throttling the fans up to 80-100% but then they start to make a sort of 'my computer is taxiing down the runway' sort of noise and that scares me lol. A few IT shops I've asked this question seem to think that there's no point in liquid cooling because the temps can never drop below ambient temps anyway, which makes sense. I've never done any sort of cooling, be it big after market air coolers or liquid cooling. Any insight into this would be awesome and I will give cookies

Australian researchers are claiming that they have figured out how to make quantum logic gates in silicon chips. It is believes that this could pave the way to mass manufacturing of quantum processors and making quantum computing viable. Quoted from The Sydney Morning Herald: "For decades scientists have been trying to turn quantum computing — which allows for multiple calculations to happen at once, making it immeasurably faster than standard computing — into a practical reality rather than a moonshot theory. Until now, they have largely relied on "exotic" materials to construct quantum computers, making them unsuitable for commercial production. But researchers at the University of New South Wales have patented a new design, published in the scientific journal Nature on Tuesday, created specifically with computer industry manufacturing standards in mind and using affordable silicon, which is found in regular computer chips like those we use every day in smartphones or tablets. UNSW's Professor Andrew Dzurak. Photo: Supplied "Our team at UNSW has just cleared a major hurdle to making quantum computing a reality," the director of the university's Australian National Fabrication Facility, Andrew Dzurak, the project's leader, said." Hey guys I'm looking for a sub based VPN service with good privacy policies and good speeds. Preferably with a HQ outside of USA or Australia but with servers in both. At the moment I've been looking at BufferedVPN, ExpressVPN, Viking VPN and IPVanish. Would anyone be able to share their experiences with any of these or recommend a different one? My current internet is 100mbps down, 2mbps up and would like to achieve at least 75% speed from servers within Australia. Cheers

A good thing this source points out is that whistle blowers and journalists with be the most affected. Source: http://www.news.com.au/technology/online/metadata-laws-to-be-introduced-on-tuesday-but-there-are-still-some-unanswered-questions/story-fn5j66db-1227561529736 Despite the government not targeting illegal downloaders, companies can still gain access to your metadata though the courts. Now this isn't anything new, we have known for a while this was coming, but had all seemed to forget about it. I'm not sure about you but I really like muh privacies, even though it's only metadata. Time to get the VPN's out bois. Original post: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/464378-friendly-reminder-data-collection-starts-oct-13

Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge preorders started for Australia today with prices of $1149 and $1249 for the 32GB S7 and S7 Edge with a "Bonus" Gear VR headset. Personally I think this price is quite absurd even though Australian money is trash atm and I (and I'm sure a lot of others) would have thought it'd make a lot more sense to have a lower price and no "Bonus" Gear VR

Hello Friends, I'm looking to build a new PC around July, 2016, for close to $2000 (AUD) to drive a nice 3440 x 1440p ultrawide display. I would like the theme for this build to be black and white with a minimalist look to it. By having the theme black and white, I can use a RGB LED strips in order to easily change the colour scheme of my entire build to something else like black and purple or black and red. Considering the research I have done on efficient performing hardware for 3440 x 1440p, my desired theme and most importantly, my budget, I have created a part list on PC Part Picker. Part List: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/p2jdyc At the time of creating the part list, the total 'not yet purchased' amount is $1991.98 (AUD). What I want to know from you guys is what you think of this list. Is there anything that should be changed? Is there anything which you think may be well suited to the theme? Let me know! I'd also like to know if you have any ideas for things which aren't directly related to the PC. Why 390x and not 970? Good question. While the 970 has great performance for 1080p gaming, the 390x begins to show a light as the resolution increases. Benchmarks have indicated that the 390x is much better performing at 3440 x 1440p than the 970. The extra VRAM also comes in quite handy at higher resolutions. How come and 850 Watt PSU? I want to be able to add a second 390x in the future to match the performance requirements of newer games at the high resolution while also still leaving a bit of overclocking headroom for my 6600k.

Hi all. I apologise if there is a post identical to this one on the LTT forum. Does anyone know why Amazon Australia is so AWFUL? People I'm subbed to on YouTube live in America and the UK and I see what they get from Amazon and it makes me jealous. Why does Amazon Australia only sell Kindles (that no-one buys) and is there a way that they can create a store like what they have in the rest of the world in Australia? It is poor practise to have the same site/items all across the world and then when it comes to Australia, just be like 'We'll totally screw all of the Australians around so they have to pay for expensive shipping'. Amazon, NOT COOL. Is there a way for someone to get in contact with an Amazon rep (or you Linus) because I really want to buy stuff from Amazon without having to pay $20+ AU for shipping. Thanks, Alpha.
