Hi all, I am planning on doing an upgrade to some mac minis that I am planning on using in a cluster. The memory on them needs to be upgraded and I am just wondering what brand of memory to use. I have been doing some research and found that most people recommended Crucial for their reliability, however, they are pretty expensive. I saw on amazon there was a kit from a brand called TimeTec, but I have not heard about them before. Does anyone know how reliable this brand is or who is their chip manufacturer? Thank you for any feedback

I got a 2018 MacBook Air that has been suffering from Kernel panics after it was dropped fairly bad. It will function for about 5mins or so before shutting down completely. I tried just doing a complete factory reset and loaded a new OS from a known good boot drive but no dice. To my knowledge Kernel panics are eaters: Logic Board, Ram, or Hard Drive. The 2018 MacBook does not have a removable Ram or Hard Drive so I went nuclear and got a new Logic Board. The logic board was the same exact everything as the old one, including the Kernel panic issue. After more research, I discovered that on older Macs the battery was sometimes the cause. After testing I now know that the battery is not it. Now my question is, What could be causing this these crashes?! Can any part in a computer cause a Kernel panic? I thought that they only happened with data transfer and resource management that would only happen with the hard drive, ram, and sometimes the logic board. Is that Not the case? The Kernel panic says, " cpu 1 caller 0xfffffff0191d3578" and, "Kernel Version: Darwin Version 22.1.0" I can provide any more information if need. Thank you for your help if you chose to do so.

Summary AMD's Strix Halo Mobile APU has been leaked and it appears to have the graphics performance of a laptop 4070. (The 4070 Laptop has the performance benchmarks of a Radeon RX 6700 XT) Estimations of its arrival are in the second half of 2024. This looks like AMD attempt to hit three birds with one stone. The birds being Intel, Nvidia, and Apple. Quotes My thoughts I hope AMD delivers at their normal budget price point. I would like to see this in desktops eventually. Hi, my sister's macbook air 2013 died and i was not able to save it. But i was able to get an adapter for the SSD that Apple uses. Now the issue is, am not able to read it. I can see it in diskmanagment and also windows 11 gui for Disk and volumes. I tried with to read it with a "apfs" software called "Mac Drive 10 Pro", but was not recognized . and with ¨"HFSExplorer" i got the error: Not a HFS type drive / wrong type. The disk is not encrypted and if windows is not lying its a Fat32 system, but then i should be ale to read it correct ? Also the disk does not show up in normal windows explorer at all, only in bios and disk utility. Does any one have a suggestion ? The easy was is ofc to format it, and it would work fine, but i wanted to get the data from it first, since my sister for some reason did not have important documents backed up / in cloud

Quotes The sluggish sales of Apple's MacBook have already been predicted. Apple's Mac PC business revenue in the first quarter was $7.7 billion. This is a 30% decrease compared to the same period last year. Source: https://wccftech.com/m2-chip-production-stopped/

so, I was wondering if anyone could help me, I bought my mother a 2020 MacBook air intel version back when they came out in 2020. and she been using dual monitors for majority of owning the MacBook air with no problems at all but then this past week she unhook it from her two monitors to take it somewhere and use now when she plugs it back in one monitor gets pick up and the second one doesn't connect at all anymore. I try my monitor on it still didn't work and also bought new dongle for it from apple thinking that was the problem and that still didn't work only one get detected and works. I even updated mac os to the latest firmware and that didn't work either so I was wondering if any could give me any advice on what to do and what have might cause this. Her Specs are 2020 MacBook Air base model intel i3 1.1 Ghz 8gb ram and 256gb storage and she only does basic task on it like word documents and email and excel stuff on it that it nothing major.

Summary Apple discontinued the "big" HomePod back in March 2021 due to disappointing sales numbers. The HomePod Mini remained the only smart speaker in their product range. Today Apple announced to bring back the original (big) HomePod as the HomePod (2nd generation) with a few upgrades. While the original HomePod launched for $350, the price dropped to $300 in 2019 and the 2nd generation is launching for $300 as well. Quotes My thoughts It's pretty much the same speaker for the same price but it's now able to measure humidity and temperature. This could be a nice addition for home automation and it could replace dedicated thermostats. I'm wondering why Apple felt the need to first discontinue the product and now bring it back. I am new here so I apologize if this is not in the correct place. 9to5mac posted an article last week on an issue I’ve been experiencing since updating to iOS 16. I am following up with my local Apple Store. If that does not yield results I intend to open a case with my connections at Apple Enterprise support for a statement. I have an account through my work in IT. I’m not completely clear yet on if this is a choice by the Apple team or the streaming service providers. source article: https://9to5mac.com/2023/01/04/ios-16-break-drm-content-hdmi/amp/ The Core Issue: For communities like mine the wait time for Starlink is almost a year, and local satellite providers charge hundreds of dollars for internet service speeds most consumers would consider unacceptable for a phone plan 10 years ago. This puts families in a rough spot where they need to consider re-subscribing to traditional satellite television or simply unsubscribing from all major streaming services. Running DSL to our property is out of the budget(forget about fiber). This is before we even consider the number of people living in temporary accommodations like RVs or campers. I have not seen any acknowledgment from apple regarding the issue since the forums first began reporting on it in October. Furthermore, they continue to sell the dongle on the Apple Store without any notice to consumers that the product allegedly no longer supports major streaming services. I have seen several instances where forum users report buying multiple dongles($50/each) under the assumption that they a have a defective unit. I have seen no statements from major streaming service providers regarding changes to their DRM features Background: My family lives in a rural area and cut the cord 2 years ago. If you are wondering how rural, I spent $400 on a yagi antenna setup just to get decent cell service inside the house. Everyone has been using Apple’s official AV Adapter to play video over HDMI from iPhone to the TV. We recently updated to iOS 16 and noticed that we could no longer play Prime Video and some Netflix content. The phone screen mirrors just fine, we can browse the catalog without issue, but when launching DRM protected media it goes to a black screen on the TV. Hulu was especially strange because instead of a black screen we get an exaggerated hitching effect where the video/sound plays for a few frames, hangs, plays a few frames, hangs, etc. content cannot be consumed. I have tested on multiple phones and dongles, and can confirm the issue is only present on devices running iOS 16 or later. The Devil’s Advocate: Needs change with time and I understand that external HDMI devices are a major source of copyright violation and piracy. Businesses are well in their rights to sunset compatibility and features at their leisure. However, it is a mark of poor customer service and customer negligence to sunset a major feature of an officially supported product without informing the consumers of the change, even after the fact. This may be the result of poor communication between vendors, poor product management, or a sign that apple does not care about peripherals in the time between the factories and the landfills. The solution: I’ll continue working on my end for a statement from Apple support on the adapter issues. This issue could be quickly resolved by Apple and the service vendors with a public statement regarding the DRM changes and a very visible note on the AV adapter website/box stating that it will not work for most major streaming services.

In addition to Advanced Data Protection in iCloud, Apple has announced that it has abandoned its plans to screen your photos for CSAM. Apple Provided this statement: My thoughts Back in 2021 when Apple announced its intentions to use this hashing tool to check against known CSAM, people were furious. Despite Apples attempts to show that the service was "secure enough" and had privacy in mind (despite its end goals to scan every photo and document you have for potentially incriminating photos), there was no good way to spin it. The feature was lambasted by security professionals, politicians, and users around the globe. I'm happy that Apple has decided to not push this feature forward and has instead decided to double down on privacy, even though adding full encryption puts more responsibility on the user and abandoning this feature means potential criminals will have to be caught outside of iCloud. Summary Apple just released a newsroom article to announce three new security features meant to protect user privacy in the cloud. Apple announced: Quotes iMessage Contact Key Verification: Security Keys: Advanced Data Protection for iCloud: My thoughts I have always believed that Apple is a leader in consumer data protections. With these new features, even more people will be able to feel safe with their data on Apples Servers. I encourage everyone to opt-in to these features, especially encrypting your photos and backups. I hope Apple continues to push forward with consumer data protection enchantments to further distinguish itself from the "You are the product" buisness models of companies like Google and Microsoft. To further demonstrate how serious this is, the FBI is worried that Apple is implementing these features. The FBI provided multiple statements on the subject: https://www.macrumors.com/2022/12/08/fbi-privacy-groups-icloud-encryption/ Sources https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2022/12/apple-advances-user-security-with-powerful-new-data-protections/ https://www.macrumors.com/2022/12/08/fbi-privacy-groups-icloud-encryption/

Apple sidecar is a huge disappointment and needs to be updated. Sidecar on Mac OS had been a feature for a while now. I heard a lot of buzz around it when it was first announced, about the possibilities of using an iPad with an Apple Pencil on Mac OS. People thought it would be the perfect solution for PS, Blender, Illustrator ect, to use an Apple Pencil with these creative apps. Sidecar is super gimmicky when you try to use it as a 2nd monitor window, it’s way to small and the scaling makes your Mac way to big on your primary monitor. Screen mirroring also changes the resolution of your primary monitor to the same as your iPad making it useless to use together as a track pad with your Apple Pencil for your Mac. If Apple really wanted to make Mac OS for creatives, they would fix Sidecar. My main suggestions. 1. Make the iPad and Apple Pencil an input device as a trackpad cursor so we could use the Apple Pencil on the iPad and See the cursor on your primary monitor. 2. Add a smart zoom function on mirror mode so you can zoom in on a window on the the iPad only, while keeping the primary monitor unzoomed, so we can work with better precision with the Apple Pencil on the iPad and still see the whole app or desktop on the primary monitor. Also add mobile style pinch zoom with the same concept I just described. 3. Fix the resolution with the primary monitor on screen mirroring. Just figure it out… I’m posting this here in hopes that Linus tech tips will hear my frustration with sidecar and make a video on the topic, hopefully putting pressure on Apple to finally fix this huge disappointment. feel free to comment if you also have had the same or other issues with sidecar or have additional solutions.

Had a pair of Beats Studio 3. I was taking them off, and the plastic head piece snapped above the hinge. I took it to Apple, and they wanted to charge me more than the headphones are worth (by the way, this was a clear manufacturing defect, and the headphones are still in the warranty period) for a $20 repair! This is absolutely absurd. Has anyone else had a similar experience with Apple refusing to honor the 1 year limited warranty? Let me know, and does anyone know a good way to go about getting them repaired? Thanks!

Ok so im planning to build a new server and thought it would be a novel idea to build it in an old Apple G5 Power mac i have (dont worry it dosnt work apple fans) using two old Cooler Master 4 in 3 Drive Moduals https://www.newegg.ca/cooler-master-stb-3t4-e3-gp/p/N82E16817993002 Ive had laying around and slide them into the front of the case to add fans and house the drives! Now I might just be smoking glue but all the G5 to PC conversions ive seen have the motherboard upside down due to the mac being orianted opposite to that of a PC and this drives me nuts. Now that being said if im cutting both side up (one for the rear IO and the other for the drive moduals) Im thinking of just fliping everything so that the motherboard and GPU sit properly. I know this would ruin the side panel lock but i can fix that easy enough. Anyone have any thoughts?

Summary Because apple didn't comply with the requirement of offering free chargers on Brazil, a consumer regulator seized the iPhones from retail stores. Quotes My thoughts I find that this is too little, they should do more harm to Apple. Apple isn't above the law, every company follows this requirement, so Apple should follow it too. People like to use Samsung as an example because they don't put chargers on the boxes on phones like the S22 but they follow the law, anyone who gets a Samsung phone that doesn't come with a charger can request a free charger for free at Samsung website, where it's considered acceptable by the ruling. —[SOLVED]— I have a wacom tablet at home and I'm fairly happy with it. But I would like something to bring digital drawing with me and Wacom's "mobile" offerings are offensive at best. So I was considering spending money in an Apple product for the first time... used. Any suggestions? I will use it for: • Procreate • that's it. maybe youtube but idc. I don't want any of the latest overpriced apple rectangles, I only need to run procreate on it, what should I go for to save a buck?

Despite having a disable sharing analytics Apple has been still sending back information regarding search history, stock information, etc from their own apps and ignoring the privacy settings. A lawsuit has been launched in regards to this, alleging that Apple is in violation of California privacy laws. Apple won't be able to hide behind their wall of secrecy too much longer or try claiming it isn't analytics as one of the sites it sends data to literally has analytics in the name. It was also mentioned that based on Apple's website, they consider what they do for ads not tracking as they collect information on you and don't share it with 3rd parties or use 3rd party data (instead they just serve targeted ads to you based on what they can tell about you...but that's not tracking according to Apple) https://gizmodo.com/apple-iphone-analytics-tracking-even-when-off-app-store-1849757558 Overall it's not really surprising. Apple has always been a champion of double speak, or blatantly lying knowing the average consumer won't know. If the lawsuit that has started against them can use discovery in a meaningful way, hopefully we will be able to figure out how much information Apple has really collected (and how much information they collected despite having it toggled off). I honestly wonder what will happen to Apple if it turns out to have sensitive information as well how much the lawsuit or even regulatory body will be able to take from Apple. This really is Apple though once again being hypocritical in their actions.

So I found a macbook on eBay, and when I asked the seller about the problem this is what they've said. But I can't seem to wrap my head around what the actual problem is? "Seems to work fine but (I think only when not on charge) will put itself to sleep and then says it can’t find the os, can be ok if resetting the nvram, doesn’t seem to be a problem if plugged in so apple suggested the battery replacement which has been done but still happening."

So I am currently thinking of buying an iPhone 14 but the one thing stopping me is the fact that I own galaxy buds pro. I know that I won't have the galaxy wearable software on the IOS, but is it actually a big difference. My second option is the S 22+. Which one should I buy, considering the characteristics of the phones.

A right to repair act in the EU would be worthless if the EU won't hold companies accountable even if they're blatantly breaking the act. The EU is currently going after Apple for limiting acces to NFC payment technology on the iphone, but that's not the only way that apple's anticompetitive behaviour is against EU law. Article 102 of the the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union states that "Any abuse by one or more undertakings of a dominant position within the internal market or in a substantial part of it shall be prohibited as incompatible with the internal market in so far as it may affect trade between Member States." which is broken by the implimentation of apples software lock on hardware and the lack of available schematics for independant repair shops. the software lock in and of itself breaches article 102 at least according to the examples set by the EU: a) directly or indirectly imposing unfair purchase or selling prices or other unfair trading conditions; b) limiting production, markets or technical development to the prejudice of consumers; and c) applying dissimilar conditions to equivalent transactions with other trading parties, thereby placing them at a competitive disadvantage. The fact that the EU hasn't forced apple to remove the software lock on iphones and to release repair schematics and make parts available for purchase for third party repair shops just shows that the EU probably wouldn't enforce a right to repair treaty as they have shown they don't care for protecting independant repair shops or they at least care more about NFC transactions source for article 102 https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/HTML/?uri=CELEX%3A12008E102 I also haven't gotten into how article 101 is being violated as well but reading this and looking at article 101 should be enough to understand that the software lock on Iphones is also a violation of the article
