#illshowyoumineifyoushowmeyours This one I got from my COMPTIA SmartBrief news letter... With all of the current controversy between the US government and Kaspersky, I guess it's only normal for the behavior of American companies to be hidden from mainstream media. Both McAfee and HPE shared source code with Russia with hopes of entering the Russian Market. There is frar this could leave the US vulnerable to cyber security risks. As far as I'm aware, many government agencies and educational establishments have contracts with McAfee. I find it very untrustworthy for the sudden move to hide the source code for an antivirus software at this level. I would imagine these organizations would want to see this code to make sure they knew what was being out on their system. And if I remember correctly, didn't Kaspersky offer to open up their source code to US officials? I wasn't aware of this. Not sure why Intel would want McAfee. Is the decision not to reveal source code an initiative to safe guard Intel vulnerabilities, proprietary information, or other architectures? US officials are very worried that sharing this information with Russia couldake US assets more vulnerable. The previous sharing of source code with Russia was to be able to gain access to the Russian Market.... However, HP wanted to join in as well. Although McAfees sharing seems to have a more legitimate base, the HPE actions seem very questionable. We are constantly talking about internet security, and we seem to out a lot of blame on the US government for it's faults and leaks... However, maybe the issue isn't the government. Maybe it relies on companies that make poor decisions in hope for economic gain? Does no one think before acting? I cannot find anything specific, but what is the financial incentive in the Russian Market? I'm sure Russian government wouldn't use US companies for cyber security. http://thehill.com/policy/cybersecurity/357333-mcafee-stops-allowing-foreign-source-code-reviews

I did just see that my parents computer didn't have a antivirus on it. Personal have I used Comodo Internet Security that have worked well except from one installer.exe. The last times I did check reviews ended up with random best choice that didn't match like pcmag's editors choice list that I did check today.

So I'm updating and installing new antivirus (avg ) on my windows 10 desktop i installed avg and immediately I did not want it anymore ( way to controlling ) went to programs and features to uninstall and it did .. according to the list avg doesn't show up anymore now when I tried to close and open my firewall it said avg is still controlling the firewall even when I can't find it under programs and features i tried deleting te actual program file but it did not allow me even if I was in my admin account. I then h downloaded the remover from their website ( because the avg control panel doesn't even allow u to remove in settings) and even the remover over said it couldn't find any avg products i ran it anyways to see and avg is still on my system , active , I can see it through glass wire mind you I've tried doing these things with my admin account asking for help to clean out avg and only have 1 antivirus running

So in the past day Windows Defender has been picking up BitTorrent as a virus on my laptop. Never had an issue before, I haven't even used BitTorrent recently, so I have no idea why its complaining about it. I know i can just add it to my exceptions but any clue on why defender is picking it up in the first place? And no I'm not using it for illegal cracked copies of games or anything.

I am looking for a free antivirus software with high detection rate that doesn't impact system performance.

Just today I've started seeing a weird problem which I can immediately pin is some sort of virus or malware: I can tell from both the nature of this message and it's language that it is not official. It happens on multiple sites. First, on Blender's website, when I went to check it's version history. Next, on my Facebook, then YouTube, and now on LTT forums. It even happens when I open a new tab: Immediately upon hitting CTRL+T, I get his message: Hitting either OK, Cancel, or ESC, brings me to a blank page with this URL: My first instinct was to run a full antivirus scan (Avast Pro Antivirus), and an Adware scan (Adware Remover Tool by TSA), however I've realized that if this alert is in itself a virus, and it's telling me to run an antivirus scan, it probably is best to not listen to it: for whatever reason. I've tested in Edge, and it seems not to happen there: it is a Chrome only problem. Any ideas as to the first step I should take? EDIT: I just updated to the most recent version of Chrome, and it still happens. It now is happening with every page I open, instead of every few.

Hello! I'm looking for a new antivirus for my Windows 10 64 bit PC and would like to know what would you people recommend. I have been using Avast Free Antivirus and Premier for quite some time, but I now I want to know is there something better? I want the antivirus to be light weight and cost as little as possible but still being good. Thank you!

https://support.avg.com/support_sales_chat I was asking for a discounted price but the AVG representative told me that he/she could give me the discount if I proceed ahead by providing my Debit card number, Name and the expiration date. They didn't ask for ant PIN though. Should I go with that or not?

In this post I will be sharing my findings on data collection done by antivirus softwares. So, I set out to find an antivirus that provided great security while respecting user privacy. A couple articles into my research it was clear that almost every AV software worth using collects user data in some form. User data might be personally identifiable or personally non identifiable. This article will go through what data antivirus softwares send and why they send it: Article. AV-Comparatives did an analysis of the data sent by various antivirus softwares which you can find here: AV-Comparatives Data Sending PDF. I recommend that you read the above article and the document yourself to get the whole picture as I am gonna touch on just a part of the info. Going through the document this is the conclusion I came to. Emsisoft Anti Malware is your best bet as recent tests by AV-Comparatives suggests that in most cases it keeps up with the top antivirus softwares out there and it doesn't collect the web addresses you visit, your local documents, your hardware and third party software info and the processes running on your PC. But you'll have to pay for the premium version as the free version doesn't offer real time protection. Although keep in mind that compared to other antivirus softwares it alerts users with more false positives, leaving it up to the user to make the decision. If you are looking for a free alternative then Avira seems like a good choice for tech savvy users. Avira lacks behavioral malware detection and its anti-phishing capabilities are mediocre at best. Also, Avira will transmit the web addresses you visit. Both Emsisoft and Avira strike a fair balance between protection and privacy. However, the data sending analysis done by AV-Comparatives is 3 years old and hasn't been updated. There is a good chance that the tested antivirus softwares have made changes to their privacy policies, which at least seems to be the case with Avira. Then I remembered Keys from NCIX mentioning how NCIX doesn't use any third party antivirus software on their PC and how they rely on Windows Defender and general browsing skills/internet know-how/ knowing what to click and what not to. But upon searching a bit about Windows Defender I found its Privacy Policy to be quite convoluted and the Privacy Settings to be somewhat limiting. There is also some general lack of testing for Windows Defender. In any case Windows Defender lags behind well rated third party antivirus softwares in terms of protection. Although iirc Keys did mention using MalwareBytes as a second line of defense. Keep in mind that MalwareBytes offers real time protection to its premium users only. And its privacy policy makes it plenty clear that they collect a lot of data. If this data collection doesn't bother you then BitDefender Paid Version might be a great choice for you. It has great reviews and results in independent lab tests. I suggest that you do your own research to find out which antivirus suits you the best. After all the research one thing stood out, that for a PC to be secure it needs to have several layers of security. Having good enough antivirus and antimalware running on your PC do help protect you. But, being vigilant while browsing the web and knowing what is safe to download and what isn't is just as important. It is recommended to regularly update your softwares and more importantly your browsers. Ad-Blockers like uBlock Origin (open source) can add an extra layer of security. And something like the Web Of Trust extension can help you identify potentially harmful web pages. However, it seems like you do have to let some of these tools have access to the web addresses you visit. Currently I have decided to stick to using Avast. But I might switch to Emsisoft. What do you guys consider to be a good privacy oriented security setup?

Hey everyone I was wondering if I could get some input on whether I should invest in antivirus software for a new pc I am building. Thanks!

I have used for Norton premier going on 5 years now. I am starting to get fed up, it is overly expensive and slows down my computer quite a bit. Im now searching for alternatives to Norton, it can be paid or free, subscription or one payment. It does not matter. Any suggestion would be great, Thanks for the help Wayland

I've only had my computer running for 1-2 hrs and Norton has written more than 4.5 gigs to my SSD. Is this normal? And are there other antimalware programs (Malwarebytes, Kasperkey, etc.) that don't write so much to your hard drive?

Hi. I'm wondering what the best applications are for antivirus, anti malware, and internet security are. I saw a video on Techquickie about a combination of antivirus and anti malware and thought I'd come here to ask the community of LinusTechTips. Processor: Intel Core i7-6850K RAM: 32 GB I'm not sure how much this can handle, but I think it can easily handle all three programs at the same while rendering 1080p videos and gaming at WQHD. Thanks.

Suggestion on a defragmentation software and an antivirus
Guest posted a topic in Programs, Apps and Websites
Hi there, My aunt has old PC with a HDD and think it's about time for a good old defragmentation run. I hear that Windows 10 disk optimization utility is enough but is it true? or do you guys have any suggestions? also I need to install her an antivirus software, please give some suggestion for one too. s Thanks in advance P.S. - she is the type of person who thinks Microsoft support staff is going to call in order to alert the user about virus infections, so obliviously the antivirus should be a one that do its job without any user intervention. thanks again! -
DISCLAIMER: I may or may not work for a company mentioned in this deal. However, I do not work in sales nor in the AV division...or even the normal consumer space. Also, I am not looking to start any type of dialogue of the merits or demerits of various antivirus/antimalware solutions. Link is to the main Home store page: Deal is 40%+ off a 1 year AV subscription on Trend Micro AV products. This is a link to the North America page, but sales may be going on in other regions. https://store.trendmicro.com/store?Action=Content&Locale=en_US&SiteID=tmamer&_ga=2.156229115.193032028.1559951859-1785279135.1523946614&pbPage=Home&pgm=4823570300

I have heard conflicting opinions on the topic of whether you need an antivirua or not. Some say it just takes up resources and Windows Defender is good enough if you know what you're doing and are tech-savvy enough. Some say extra security is needed. So, I am thinking about pulling the trigger and buying Webroot Antivirus Software. Please give me your opinion.

Hi, I just wanted to ask, what antivirus/antimalware software would you recommend - which one you have good experience with? Is malwarebytes enough?

I'm unable to re-enable Windows Defender given the error of "Threat service has stopped restart it now." (and when i attempt to restart, it stalls and then gives error prompt) and sometimes "Page not available, Your IT Administrator has limited access to some areas of this app..." There is no other Windows devices on my network only mobile devices, my router/dns does not seem to be tampered with, Windows is fully updated, drivers updated, newest bios. I encountered this problem 3 days ago and since then i have; Clean installed windows twice, Cleared CMOS, regedit DisableAntiSpyware set to 0, Installed Malwarebytes after this issue and performed a full scan(0 results), Glanced through task manager, used my extremely limited knowledge in Wireshark and failed to find anything.
