  1. Hello everyone, recently posted my first time in the LTT forums in GD, and now that the pleasantries are done, its now time to get down to business. I recently became interested in overclocking, and with my aging CPU, GPU, and PSU finally starting to give out after years of hard work I finally decided to upgrade and start overclocking as a hobby. I have watched and read a lot of overclocking guides, including everything OC related in the LTT channel on Youtube. Since this is the Graphics Card section I will be directing my related questions here. But first lets get my rig out of the way so you know what you're dealing with: CPU: AMD FX-8370 Vishera 8-core 4.0 Ghz (4.3 Turbo) Graphics Card: MSI AMD R9 390X RAM: 16GB (4 x 4GB Sticks) Team Vulcan 1600 DDR3 MoBo: MSI 990FXA-GD65V2 Storage: Seagate 500GB 7200 rpm Hard Drive (Yeah I know, i have an SSD on the way for my boot drive and games.) PSU: EVGA 750W Gold Fully Modular CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Evo-212 Now that is done, lets get down to the brass tacks: I'm trying to use MSI Afterburner 4.1.1 (the most recent update) to over clock my R9 390X and set up profiles on it so I can squeeze more performance out of my gaming experience, and it seems I'm running into some troubles. I have 4 profiles set up, and after reading a number of overclocking guides on this particular card I felt confident that I could get similar performance out of my card. I used the Afterburner to set up aggressive fan profiles to keep my card from throttling and used the 4 profiles to make small, incremental improvements to the clock speeds of both the GPU and the Memory. After that I used the Kombuster for an average of 20 minutes per profile to check for fragmenting and other graphical errors while monitoring the temps to keep them below 75 c to mitigate thermal throttling. If I encountered graphical problems or temps exceeding my standards I either backed off the clocks or adjusted power and voltage until there were no problems that I could see and temps were under control. It took me hours (from 0100 to 0400) to get four profiles that met my various expectations for gaming, from a profile (near stock) for League of Legends, to a higher clocked profile for Heros of the Storm's more graphically and physics intensive gameplay, a profile for Metro 2033 Redux and Metro 2033: Last Light Redux's challenging requirements, and a 'Max Clock' profile for future gaming endeavors. However, this is where I've run into a snag. All of the profiles I have posted below have been tested with Kombuster (the Fur Mark profile) for 20 minutes and all of them have kept their temperatures below 75 C. With that in mind, every time I load of 3D Mark 11 to test how the overclock improves my performance, it crashes and freezes my whole computer. I have to do a hard restart, and I've tried adjusting settings, but any time I use anything except the stock settings the card crashes. So take a look at these profiles and tell me what you think. I think I might know what is potentially causing it, my CPU overclock, but I cannot test it until I get back. But for now take a look at these profiles and tell me what you think: For reference: Stock Profile: Daily Driving Core Voltage (mV): +0 Power Limit (%): +0 CPU Clock: 1080 Mhz Memory Clock: 1500 Mhz Profile 1: League of Legends Core Voltage (mV): +0 Power Limit (%): +20 CPU Clock: 1100 Mhz (+20Mhz over stock) Memory Clock: 1550 Mhz (+50Mhz over stock) Profile 2: Heros of the Storm and DotA 2 Core Voltage (mV): +25 Power Limit (%): +50 CPU Clock: 1130 Mhz (+50Mhz over stock) Memory Clock: 1585 Mhz (+85Mhz over stock) Profile 3: Metro 2033 and Metro 2033: Last Light Core Voltage (mV): +56 Power Limit (%): +50 CPU Clock: 1150 Mhz (+70Mhz over stock) Memory Clock: 1600 Mhz (+100Mhz over stock) Profile 4: Future AAA Games Core Voltage (mV): +100 Power Limit (%): +50 CPU Clock: 1580 Mhz (+100Mhz over stock) Memory Clock: 1650 Mhz (+150Mhz over stock) Attached are the photos of everything. Even through I have the profiles here in text, a picture is worth a thousand words, yes? Anyways, I've heard that once you reach the threshold of performance and efficiency it gets harder to achieve higher clocks and requires more voltage. However, I didn't believe that I would have to increase the voltage by 100 mV and increase my power by 50% in order to get a stable improvement of 100Mhz GPU and 150Mhz Memory clock. However, with the benchmark crashing after it loads and begins, I have to believe that my clocks are *not* stable and they need tweaking. Or there might be an issue with my CPU overclock, which I achieved using the antiquated MSI OC Genie II. I understand that the MSI R9 390X is already factory overclocked, and I read that it's overclocking is fairly limited due to the Grenada XT architecture. I knew that going into it, but after reading a bunch of overclocking guides for this card all of them achieved a very similar (stable) overclock actually using *less* power. To reiterate I bumped up core voltage and power limit/back off clocks to eliminate artifacting and tested them in Kombuster for 20 minutes. So, thoughts? By the way, I hope this was easy to read, I spent half an hour working on this post: no one wants to read a sloppy post! Thumbnails are as follows: Profiles 1, 2, 3, and 4.

  3. Hi guys, after doing a clean reset of Windows about a month ago, Afterburner doesn't save my overclock after a reboot. It worked just fine before I reinstalled Windows, and the settings are the exact same as before. I have a Radeon HD 5870 overclocked to 950 MHz core and 1300 MHz memory, but every time I reboot Afterburner just changes the values back to the stock speeds of 850/1200. The overclock is completely stable so that is not the problem.
  4. Hi, I have a reference GTX 970 and am wondering what the difference voltage control modes are in my afterburner settings.I have the option between reference design, standard msi. and extended msi. Which should I use, and what's the difference between them? Cheers, Ben
  5. After each computer restart, my GPU core and memory clocks revert back to values that differ from my default settings For example, the true default core and memory clock values of my ASUS Radeon 7950 HD are: 800 MHz core 1250 MHz memory but, when I log into Windows 7, GPU-Z shows the following values: 1060 MHz core 1700 MHz memory This is a problem because my system is NOT stable at 1700 MHz on the memory clock. Before this issue came about, my GPU would start up at its true default values This all started after I failed an OCCT stress test; I was running 1700 MHz on the memory clock before the system failed Other Notes: I am using MSI Afterburner (the latest version) with unofficial overclocking mode enabled without powerplay support No, I do not have "Apply overclocking at system startup" enabled on MSI Afterburner Question: How do I make sure that whenever I log into Windows 7 my core and memory clock values revert back to their true default settings and NOT the unstable settings? Help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!
  6. Hello. I am using msi afterburner overlay to show temps and cpu/gpu usage. But overlay does nt appear on some games. For example it works for crysis 3 but doesnt for unity or dying light. I am using windows 8.1 and afterburner 4.1.0.7013 with RivaTunerStatisticsServer v6.3.0.7688.
  7. With there being a few tools on the market, I was wondering what everyones tool of choice is when it comes to over clocking the GPU. AfterBurner vs Percision or any other you use.
  8. Hi, I was wondering if anybody owns or used to own a Sapphire R9 280 Dual-X Cooler card and what kind of stable over-clocks you managed to achieve. Thanks
  9. Sometimes it works, but most of the times it does not. In game, the OSD shows a circle with BUF after it, which goes away when I start recording, but it just doesn't most of the time because it's not recording. I've checked the directory. And these settings are(to my knowledge) the same settings to when it does work. These are my settings for the Video Capture.
  10. Hi, I have a lovely rig with a 4690k (4.2ghz) paired with an MSI Gaming 4G GTX 970. I've been running the GPU at stock for a while and it's great, but tonight I decided to be adventurous and overclock it with Afterburner and Heaven Benchmark. I'm a bit scared, because unless I have a godlike card my specs seem too good to be true. My core clock got to +200MHz, which is good. Wouldn't move much from there. I kept my power limit and voltage the same for now. Unless anyone has a second opinion on that I'll keep it that way. The memory clock, however, is at +700MHz, which seems insane. I'm honestly afraid to push it any more. My Heaven benchmark scores are about a 2300, with an average framerate of 91 and temps never going above 75 degrees. It's on the high preset, 1080p windowed with 2x AA. Am I doing something wrong here? Destroying my card? Not going far enough? I'm gonna let this benchmark run overnight and see what happens. Thanks, -Chris
  11. I been playing around with Afterburner to try and see how much of an overclock I can get out of my MSI GTX980 Gaming 4G. I managed to get a stable overclock of 1528MHz on the core with boost and 7990MHz on the memory running Valley and Heaven. Stock voltage for this card under gaming load peaks at 1.026V with an ASIC Quality of 74.1%. I noticed something odd about the VDDC sensor reading in GPU-Z when I first applied the settings and ran FurMark. The VDDC reading peaks at 1.000V in the early 5 minutes of the test but later the voltage goes up to 1.200V and peaks at 1.225V half an hour later. I didn't touch core voltage since it was locked out in Afterburner and it was not reading it's value. Was GPU-Z providing me inaccurate readings or was the card automatically raising the voltage based on my overclock?
  12. Good day! So I have a bit of an issue. Figured this place is an appropriate spot to seek help. Every time I open MSI Afterburner (No OC; just for monitoring) while a Youtube Video is playing in HD in a browser (I've tried Chrome and Firefox), my PC freezes completely (Image locks up, Caps Lock doesn't work, seems to be completely out). You know how Afterburner starts and then it takes about 1-2 seconds for the readouts to begin updating? Well, the PC freezes after those 1-2 seconds, not immediately as the program opens. I restart it manually, then, after Windows boots up, I get a "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown...BSOD 0x124" error message. I've done some research and read that this BSOD Code is almost always caused by a hardware issue, which concerns me, and which is the main reason why I'm asking for help, as I can do without MSI Afterburner at the end of the day. Specs: i7 4790k @ Stock Speeds Gigabyte Z97-D3H (Outdated BIOS; a bit afraid to flash it) 16GB of RAM (HyperX 1866Mhz CL9) Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X OC Super Flower Leadex Gold 80+ Platinum 650W PSU No Overclocks are in place (Aside from the Factory OC on the R9 290; which doesn't count, right?). Temperatures are fine everywhere (Never above 74*C on GPU; Never Above 70*C on CPU. In Full Load.) I've tried this with both the latest Catalyst 15.4 Beta and the Catalyst 14.12 Omega drivers (Uninstalled with DDU). Here's a MiniDump with the induced the BSOD. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/63563864/042715-8860-01.zip Tried enabling Driver Verifier but it would crash my Windows at the Welcome Screen with no logs of an error ever taking place (Welcome... *Sudden Sliced-up Glitchy Screen*). My question is: Considering all of the above, could the aforementioned BSOD 0x124 still be some sort of Hardware Malfunction? That's what concerns me. Initially I thought it was a result of me tinkering with my voltages to further cool down my i7, but after resetting all my BIOS Settings, that isn't the case apparently. I'd thoroughly appreciate any input.
  13. I'm overclocking an ASUS Radeon 7950 HD GPU with MSI Afterburner. When I run OCCT (my preferred stress test; with error check enabled), my core voltage (VDDC) measurement fails to go over 1.11V as shown in GPU-Z; I have my core voltage set to 1.2V in MSI Afterburner. The test ends up coming back with errors, which basically means the clock is unstable Question #1: Could it be unstable because the GPU is not receiving enough voltage? Question #2: If I enable "Force constant voltage" in MSI Afterburner, could this potentially solve this issue by feeding the GPU the volts I originally set (1.2V)? Question #3: Is it safe to run "Force constant voltage" on an overclock that's used for maybe half of the day at most OR a 24/7 overclock? Question #4: My core voltage (VDDC) measurement remains at 1.188V during idle (on desktop, surfing net, etc), but it goes down when I run a GPU intensive program like OCCT. Why doesn't it stay closer to 1.2V like I had originally set it? Thanks!
  14. Alright so I decided to overclock my GPU (Sapphire r9 270x 2gb OC) and this is the most stable I've gotten without touching the voltage at all Stock Core: 1070 MHz Memory: 1400 MHz OC Core: 1200 MHz Memory: 1500 MHz The stock I got 27.2 FPS and 686 score. OC I got 30.3 FPS 765 score My Temps have been around 65 Degrees. Not going to 70 at all. These results were on Heaven btw. It was doing fine when higher but sometimes it would randomly give me a black screen during the benchmark and would give me less results. Does anyone know the safest voltage I could go for with this particular card? And does touching the memory even do anything? Thanks.
  15. Through the MSI Afterburner properties you can open On-Screen Display. Under MORE it takes you to RivaTuner Statistics Server. From the RTSS you can change font size, color and coordinates on screen on the right menu. What I'm wondering is if there's a way to change the font of the On-Screen Display. In this tutorial you see someone setting up Afterbruner and HWiNFO which appear to do about the same thing and can be used simultaneously if you wanted to. The yellow font isn't the default font and I don't see where to change it. What am I overlooking? I don't believe Totalbiscuit's Dying Light Port Report is using the default font either, so how and where do you change it to Comic Sans or whatever other options there are?
  16. Hi I don't like to overclock because i'm always concerned of what might happen, but today i got a GTX 750 1Gb (To play at 720p) and decided to overclock it. I readed a few guides, downloaded EVGA PrecisionX, and just started playing with the core clock. I'm scared of what might happen, so i wanted to come here and see if i was doing well, and if i should keep overclocking or stop now. The temperatures are staying in 59°-63° since i started Valley Benchmark. I overclocked first the Core until i reached +135, then stopped and went with the memory, never touched voltages and the valley is running loops since an hour ago. No artifacts and no memory failures. ( Color flashes i think? ) What should i do? Thanks and sorry about my bad english. EDIT: There i upgraded a picture from the ending of the benchmark and the overclock settings.
  17. Good evening tech community, first off, I am not a native speaker, please go easy on my spelling/grammar/etc mistakes. So I've had this issue, that I will come to later, for a while now. This morning I was close to killing myself over it, until this "5K Imac" video of linus released decent amounts of adrenaline to keep me from ending my life - and also brought me the idea to give the community a shot, that linus admire so much. 1. This is what happened To start things off, my system specs: CPU: i7-4770K GPU: MSI 780 Lightning PSU: Corsair RM 850W MB: MSI Z87 MPOWER RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance Black (running XMP) Storage: 128GB Samsung 830 SSD, 1TB WD OS: Windows 7 64 Bit Service Pack 1 The Computer has been running in this configuration for at least 6 Months (Stable, no crashes / errors / issues whatsoever). No changes in hardware have been made whatsoever. However it should be noted, that the harddrives (and os) are from a previous build which used an i5-3550 and a asus gtx 660. This previous build was stable for almost a year, until I upgraded everything but the harddrives. Although online folks told me differently, I could just plug in the harddrives and boot into windows with all my old folders / layout / data without any issues. Once again: NO CRASHES for at least 6 months straight. I used MSI Afterburner 4.0 with my MSI card. Also installed the MSI VGA Fan Tool which was made for the 780 Lightning, mainly to control that noisy ass fucking useless middlefan. Good knows why there is a fan in front of a metal plate with no cooling fins. Everything worked flawlessly. Then, about 4 Weeks ago, Afterburner suddenly told me it couldn't connect to the update server (See attachments). It also stopped recognizing my GPU and Gpu driver along with all temperature checkpoints on the card. It only showed Windows Ram usage. MSI VGA fan control didn't pop an error message, but also managed to stop working . Neither afterburner nor vga fan control can be adjusted anymore (see attachments). Fuck. Now the middlefan ramps up like a little b**** when playing games. What used to be my beloved near silent 1500€ killer gaming/edeting/working machine turned into a damn jet turbine. Could've had this much cheaper. Then I tried out EVGA Precision x16. Surprisingly, It worked. It showed some graphs regarding the gpu (I am not sure if power consumption and gpu clock are the only two that can be displayed, or if the others are hidden in some submenu). The fan control regulates one fan controller (The two big fans on the left and right), however not the second one (The yellow noisy middlefan). This smaller one still turns up like hell in video games. Precision x16 gave me an error this morning saying it couldn't connect to the internet. It could again after a reboot - afterburner still denies its services. 2. This is what I've done so far as mentioned, installed precision x to see if it might be due to gpu (but it is prooven that it isnt, right?) reinstalled EVERYTHING MSI related (tried to) reinstall everything nVidia related (after reboot, an old driver automatically installed itself .. dont know how that happened. maybe the pc took it from the downloads folder?) Just for the heck of it and in between steps rebooted the pc millions of times contacted MSI support twice: First guy told me to dump my pc and buy a new desktop from the MSI website (S***er)  Second guy was a lot nicer. Told me to reinstall stuff, update stuff, clean regestry, and then to reinstall windows I did everything he said but to reinstall windows. I even used a regestry cleaning tool, although internet told me otherwise (I is said to be really unsafe). However, I dont feel like I did it properly. searched the web forever, however no one seems to have my certain issue updated everything (got my hands on afterburner 4.1 just today, same result : "can't connect to update server") "downdated" everything, used most older versions - still, all tell me they cant reach the update server# 3. Conclusion (about the question) I need to control the noisy middle fan. It is jus not necessary for it to run at 45% since booting (it always did that, and I always turned it down). I dont feel like its a Windows or GPU problem. Why would a problem randomly accur after over six months of problem free use without hardware changes? This doesnt make any sense to me. I think that something is preventing Afterburner from working - in the sense like afterburner needs (at least once maybe) a connection to the internet to varify (that I am not some spammer or anything?), but as it cannot establish a connection, the program locks itself and doesnt work? I mean why else would Precision x work? What could be hindering Afterburner? I really dont want to reinstall Windows. This would mean so much work for me as I really costumized my desktop and OS and file management etc. As I know the least about the regestry, and the nice MSI guy talked about it and cleaning it, I suspect the regestry to be the fault. (?) If you made it until the end, I want to thank you - I dont take it as granted that you take your time to help or even read about my issue. If you've any Solution, or idea, or know someone or know some place or website I could write to, anything - please let me know. Thank y'all so much in advance, yours truly, from the north of Germany, Richard
  18. Alright so I'm having some issues with getting my MSI r9 270 to raise it's voltages so I can get higher clocks. I went into afterburner and unlocked voltage control, and the voltage slider does then show up in the sliders, however it translucent and cannot be adjusted. Why is this happening? I attempted to install saphire's trixx software and it would crash as soon as I tried going into the "settings" tab so I figured that was a total lost cause and uninstalled it right away. Do any of you know what I can do to make it so I can actually adjust the voltages? Is it something with the bios or what? Thanks for your help!
  19. Thanks for stopping by! So basically I have a GTX 645 OEM GPU in my Dell system and I have been overclocking this card for a while now and have been VERY happy with my results (+160 Core/ +500 Mem. all at max of 59°C! ). But I can't change the voltage or power limit slider in MSI Afterburner. Is this since I'm using a pre-built system w/ BIOS limitations and stuff or just because the GPU doesn't physically have and other connections other than the PCIe slot for more power? Any help would be great! Thanks!
  20. Hey there, Currently i have a GTX 970 SLI in my rig. the MSI afterburner is at: Core Voltage - +0mV Power Limit - 110% Core Clock - +175Mhz Memory Clock - +400Mhz Fan Speed - Auto Card 1 temperatures stay around 79-80 degrees constantly at full load, card 2 is significantly cooler (to be expected), however fans aren't running at their limit yet so i believe at the cost of noise i could potentially set the fans to run faster and give it more temperature headroom. According to GPU-Z Power consumption isn't going above 103% TDP on either card. I'm still in the process of testing how far i can get the memory clock, but at the moment the core clock seems like it can't go any further. in fire strike the smoke starts this weird flickering at +185MHz and theres full on artifacts at +200MHz. Can i increase voltage to further the OC, or are the artifacts signalling the cards can't be pushed any further? Should i try decreasing core clock and increasing memory clock to see how far i can get memory clock (already done this with core but i had to pull it back a bit when i started increasing memory). any tips are really appreciated, i'm a noob
  21. About 4 weeks ago I replaced my Gtx 650ti with a new 970 msi 4g gaming and I've been having some trouble with it since then. I have never noticed these problems before I upgraded the graphics card so the card should be the problem. I have had it crash the computer a few times (3 or 4) while under heavy load gaming in bf4 or rome tw II. Then yesterday evening it shut off all display outputs to both of my screens for about 20 seconds and then restarted them, only the display outputs though not the computer that kept on running just fine. The fans on the graphics card also went crazy indicating it might be a temperature problem. Checking afterburner whether it was temp issue it seemed it had gone completely fubar. As seen below apparently temps were fine at ~51 C until the display outputs crashed when it went to 0 C, and ~1% usage and 46 million % power. I have never seen anything like this before. I ran 2 hrs of heaven this morning with no problems so I don't know what to think about it. http://imgur.com/bW0qSC9 (it's refusing to let me paste the imgur link as image) system specs:http://pcpartpicker.com/p/bnyRCJ note the 4670k is not overclocked.
  22. Hi guys, I was testing the overclock i set on my 780 with assetto corsa (is really heavy...) and with the offset of +160 on the core and overvolted of +15mV (msi afterburner) it was hitting the power limit mostly, and the voltage limit sometimes, but rarely, as the utilization limit... No OV limit ever reached... The final clock is 1175 Mhz, but also overvolted +37mv it crashes when doing the next step, +165 that is 1202Mhz... I know i could push it a bit further, and doing a bit of overvolting wouldnt be bad, also if i run it on air (1.2v when +37mv, i wont reach 1.3v)... How to remove the utilization limit? I've seen that +37mv +170 (1215Mhz) the utilization limit is no more the problem, but bf crashes and resets the driver, and now comes the ov limit and voltage one... Thanks for your help, EMENCII
  23. Hi guys, I've just flashed my 780, and i wanted to ramp up the voltage a bit, so how do i unlock the 62mV of AB version 4? Thanks, EMENCII
  24. I am using msi afterburner and am wondering the avg. amount of increase in core clock and memory clock i should be looking for. What is the avg amount that one can boost the core and memory. I am trying to push mine to the max and would appreciate a good starting point.
  25. I have a Sapphire Vapor-X 5870 OC 1GB Stock Core: 875mhz Stock Memory: 1250mhz Idle temps 36'C Load temps: 68'C Can i simply max out the sliders so its Core: +25mhz = 900mhz Memory: + 50mhz = 1300Mhz Its only a 25 and 50 mhz increase on both, so it feels safe.... I know the alternative is to properly overclock with voltages but ive never done that before and dont really feel comfortable doing that now But even more importantly i dont want to brick my card Im okay with leaving the card how it is But i'm curious to know if this is a good idea or bad
