A while ago my friend built his first PC and managed to get a hold of Windows 10 Educational edition with a product key for free and booted this onto a hard drive, however he wants to upgrade his PC now and is planning on getting an SSD as his boot drive instead. He is also replacing his motherboard. Is he able to download and reuse the same windows 10 software and product key?

So I will admit right now I did not purchase windows 10 on somewhere like newegg, but rather I just downloaded a code from a website like g2a. So my problem is that windows will indeed activate, but randomly un-activate at certain moments. If I restart my computer, windows will reactivate. It seems that whenever I shut my computer down, I immediately have to restart because windows isn't activated. I'm a bit confused here, I have an ASUS mobo and the qcode whenever I shut down and turn the computer back on will read "40". Immediately I restart and the qcode turns to "AO". Any help on this?

Hi, So you maybe like me keeping up to date with all things computer tech and the time comes where we need/want to upgrade your system however that comes with a price as this could loose your digital licencee and my cause you to having to buy a new licence £££ .... Anyway i see that you can link this digital licence to your MSA (Microsoft Account) does anyone know if this gives you any extra benefit to link it to your MSA either so we can replace any part if not then what advantage does this provide just by simply linking it ? Thanks

So I just formated my pc and I'm running Windows 10 but it says my activation key is being used on a different computer. I'm assuming since I formated my puter that has something to do with it? I have the activation key but it doesn't let me use it now. I have a disk with Windows 10 from the manufacturer of my computer should I put that in or what do I do?

I switched out the HDD of an old laptop for an SSD and reinstalled windows using a key I used on a previous computer (no longer running). It's been a few months and my mother (the person using the laptop) told me ever since I left she has been getting that little "Windows is not activated) watermark on the side of the screen. It's been way over a month so I don't think her computer is just going to shut down but I really want to get that to stop. Any help? Should I just suck it up and buy a $30 key from Kinguin or is there a way around it?

Can someone help me or point myself into the right direction, I received an iPad Mini off my sister which she has forgotten every single password as well as security questions, she rang Apple resulted in "Sorry I cannot confirm it's you so we can't do anything" . Any answers will be grateful and if it works and it deactivates I will give you a virtual hug. Insert other media

Okay, so I just swapped to a new motherboard and now my windows says it is not activated. I cannot customize the PC but other than that it's working just fine. Will windows keep working like this, or will it stop working at some point? Is there a fix to this? Btw I'm running windows 10 which has been upgraded from windows 8.1.

So I have played the game for 174 hrs online and offline no problem and today it asks for an activation(it was activated when i got it on steam...). click the box and guess what... a fucking error can't get around it. It shouldn't be asking for this since I did this when I got the bloody game and its linked to my social club. FFS anyone got a fix?

Hi, I would like to know how far I can upgrade my pc until Microsoft decline my win10 license. Since we know that product key ain't really around with win10 and its mostly done with system unique ID.. However i don't know where that ID come from.. is it embedded into the mobo? or the CPU? or is it even generated from the whole system config? (highly unlikely imo, but still possible) I'm asking that this morning because i'm planning to change CPU since i was in a hurry to get my dream build just working about a year ago when i suddenly decided to go to college while also working full time.. so i did not had the 450$ at the time for the 4770k /4790k but i got the G3258 25th anniversary pentium ( best CPU for the money imo ) it perform so nicely for 80$, since then it's been paired up with an GTX980 for gaming! it still perform well for most games but with games like arma3 and such cpu intensive titles, it literally starve the GPU.. now I'm ready to buy the big cpu but will microsoft still activate my pc after the swap? thanks guy!

Hey all! So, recently I purchased and installed a z97X gaming MOBO and a GTX 980 ti from evga. Following the installation of said components I was greeted with a messaged prompting me to activate windows 10. Going to my accounts page under settings gives me no option to put in a product key, instead I'm given the option of "Sign in with a Microsoft account instead" this is the only option I am given. I sign in and am greeted with a page telling me to sign in with my old password. None of my passwords work, except for one, but that one only takes me to a page telling me that "Oops, something went wrong". Clicking "next" does nothing and "cancel" closes the page. I hope that I've provided enough information, if there's anymore info you might need to help me ill do my best to provide it. Much thanks.

I'm about to buy a Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit DSP OEI DVD and my concern is, will the product key inside the envelope work on a fresh install of Windows 10? I've read that you can use product keys of Windows 7, 8/8.1 after the 1511 update. Is it all the same regardless if you get the retail or oem version? Need to get answers before I download the ISO since our connection is really not fast. I've attached a pic of the product I'm about to get for your reference.

When I got my laptop, Razer Blade 14, the bottom had a skin that covered it. This was fine until I needed access to the windows key that the sticker covered. Removing the skin also removed all text from the windows key sticker. So I can now only read the last 3 sets of 5 characters for the windows key(By shining a light through the skin). There 0% chance for me to read the other 2 sets. I can read the QR code and also can ready the 22 long character key below the activation key. So I was wondering if there was somehow to use the 22 character key to activate windows on my laptop, or someway to get the rest of the windows key.

Anyone else have knowledge of this problem or how to fix it? I've tried System Restore, but, for some reason, no restore points are present from before the bad motherboard swap. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hello LTT community, I got a bunch of viruses on my PC, so I had to send it to a repair shop. The only issue is that they asked for the windows key, and I can't seem to find it. I know the answer will probably be that it is impossible, but I figured that asking would be worth a try. Is their any way to get a hold of the key? I was running windows 7 home premium, but it was upgraded to windows 10 home. Thanks :-)

I have 5 systems on a domain that all suddenly started throwing out this activation error today simultaneously. Logging in as an admin and trying to activate doesnt help because system properties shows activation as successful already.... tried running %WINDIR%\system32\oobe\msoobe /a which didnt help. These systems have been error free and running for 2 years + now. Ive checked the time on all the systems and its correct, the time posted on the Time Server is also correct. Ive also forced Group Policy updates and rebooted which didnt help. The only other thing I can thing of is removing and rebinding them to the domain, but since this site is an hours drive away Id rather not go out there, do that, and then not resolve the problem. Any ideas for a REMOTE resolution? Reformatting is an absolute last resort, and I see no reason why it should come to that. Thanks for any input.

Hello everyone, I decided I should reset my iPhone and start afresh, but I was worried what I was going to do about steam. I use steam app confirmations since I am a trader and I can't afford waiting 1 week for the confirmation and trade ban to be reset... Is there a way I can reset my phone without getting a trade ban or 3-4 day wait period? Is there a way to temporarily disable the steam guard just for an hour or so so that I can reset my phone and re download my steam app and re enable steam guard? Thanks in advance.

Hi! I have recently purchased an SSD and have Windows 10 Home installed on my HDD (upgraded from 8.1). I was wondering if I create a windows 10 ISO on this PC to install it on the SSD would it remain activated when moving it across? As I don't have my windows 8.1 activation key and all win 10 keys are the same. Thanks for any help!

So I recently used an activation key for windows 10 pro to receive the upgrade for free, and since then I can't get it to activate. I've tried using MS toolkit to activate to no avail. I've also used cmd prompt to activate and change the product key, which didn't work either. So is there any way to activate without a clean install? Any help is extremely appreciated.

So I've had an old iPhone 4 lying around I decided to reset it and jailbreak it for a bit of fun. I reset it and all was going well until I got to the activation part and it said that it required a SIM card, something I don't have. I was wondering if there is a way around this. The iOS is 7.1.2. Any help would be appreciated as I want to relive my glory days of jailbreaking.

Hey guys, recently I got a new SSD. I posted a topic about doing a fresh install of Windows 10 on the new SSD. I did as people instructed and got the installation media from Microsoft.com, made me a Windows 10 installation USB, and did the installation perfectly fine, runs great on the new SSD. But, there had to be a catch, nothing ever goes completely smooth for me. I was told in my other topic, http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/512588-fresh-install-of-windows-10-on-new-ssd/, that the product key information was stored on my motherboard, and that after the new installation the Microsoft servers would replace the old product key, making me not have to get a new product key. But this did not happen, and hasn't happened for 5 days. I feel like I have given it enough time that it should have happened by now. I have not wiped my old hard drive yet. How can I get my old key to activate my new Windows so that I will not have to buy another key? The old hard drive started as Windows 8, and I did the free update to Windows 10 a while back. Please help me out. Tired of seeing this watermark over everything I do.
