Hey there guys , as the question in the title says I am kind of confused right now on whether or not I am able to activate my Windows 10 Pro with a normal Windows 8.1 Key. I just finished my first Pc build and I heard that you should install Windows 10 directly and use a Windows 7/8/8.1 Key to activate it , because it is cheaper, so I installed Windows 10 Pro and now I want to activate it , but I want to get it as cheap as possible (>20€-25€). Thanks for every answer!

Hey guys, I was hoping you could give me some help. I want to upgrade someone's pc to Windows 10 (using the free accessibility upgrade) but there's one problem, The drive in the system is some weird ~180GB disk, but it was fragmented in a 60GB and 120GB part. Windows 7 is on the 60GB part but it's filling up real bad, is there any way to merge the drives together and put windows 8 on the complete 180GB or is there a way where I can put in a new 1 or 2TB HDD without me having the product key for windows 7?

I am having a very irritating problem, when i start windows i get a full screen thing saying 'Activate Windows' and a button saying go to settings, if i click on it, it'll take me to the activation page on settings but wont load, i have left it over night to see if it would eventually load but it didn't, it's especially annoying when i'm playing a game and this full screen message appears, stopping me doing what i was doing, i'm starting to think its something to do with me activating it with a key i found on the internet due to me not being able to afford a legit key, but i haven't had this problem before, I've looked online and the best I've got is to run the activation troubleshooter but i cant because the page doesn't load, any help would be appreciated, i will be especially thankful if a solution is found that doesn't require me to reinstall windows. Many thanks Michael M of Devonshire

Perhaps it's an obvious question - but I'll be switching to a totally different machine and I'm not 100% certain about how activation will work afterward. I use an OEM key that I got online a while back - so obviously I won't be able to easily re-active it. So - after I move the OS SSD and the other storage drives - do I just get a new key and activate the windows installation using that one. Right? Of course has to be a 10 Pro key - to match the installed version.

I'm replacing my boot drive from my 1TB HDD to my new SSD and I was able to fresh install windows just fine, except the key for the version on the HDD (didn't format it) is windows 10 education and it doesn't want to activate the pro version on the SSD. is there an easy way to convert my current version to edu? should I reinstall it to Home in hopes it will work better? should I find the .iso file originally used (think its an 8.1 version, so not preferred)? should I buy a key from some shady market? or is there a better option? I have the key linked to my Microsoft account for the edu version I haven't done much on the new install yet so I'm willing to reinstall the proper version

Hey guys. I build my pc today and activated windows with a windows key from kinguin.net . Now i have a weird text at the bottom of the screen that says "Activate the windows. Go to activation settings of Windows" . whats wrong?

So I built my PC back in may and didn't have a windows 10 license at the time. I recently got a Windows 10 Pro OEM key to activate my PC, only to realize that OEM keys need to be used on the first install of windows 10 on the computer. If I reinstall Windows 10 as a fresh install will my drives need to be re-partitioned / reformatted? -> TO CLARIFY: It's as if I am putting the HDD into a new machine while the SSD is getting windows 10 installed on it(in a new machine). Does this mean I will lose all access to files that were previously on the HDD?

Hello, I recently upgraded my computer by installing in a new MOBO, RAM, and CPU. Before this upgrade, I had made sure to connect my Windows email to my version of Windows 10. However, after the upgrade, I went and followed some instructions which led me to the option that allows me to tell windows that I've changed some hardware, however after trying to re-activate windows I'm met with a screen that reports that Windows is unable to re-activate. What am I supposed to do? Do I have to buy a new windows key?? Some screenshots that show the screens I'm met with... https://gyazo.com/b0dc65863e31be87c674962ba48435d9 https://gyazo.com/4fe43a1dace4c7500db02ee9bdabb816

Ok, so I've recently purchased some nice new hardware (mobo cpu and ram). I could just use the same hard drive, and I read online that windows 10 can just be re-activated. That is indeed true. You can use a troubleshooter to get to a window that allows you to select the device you're currently using and then you can activate it. However, when I tried this, it told me that it couldn't reactivate windows 10. That's weird, because I'm using the same kind of OS on the same type of device, and according to MS, I can just reactivate it. But then I figured it out. Apparently, the 'type of device' classification of my old hardware was 'to be filled by OEM', while my new hardware classifies as 'PC'. Which is why windows 10 thinks that my computer is now a different type of device, while this is actually not the case. Does anyone out there know a solution to this problem? Could I change the classification of my new hardware to 'to be filled by OEM' perhaps? Thanks in advance.

I recently installed Windows 10 Pro on my laptop. I skipped entering the activation key when installing because I was reusing my Windows 10 Pro install drive I used on my desktop, and didn't have a new key. After doing all of the Windows updates I noticed that my windows was activated on my laptop, when it wasn't before. I am signed into the same Microsoft account on each computer and I am wondering if it somehow transferred the activation key. I don't have access to the other computer currently (I am on vacation) and I am wondering if windows is activated on both computers or if the activation transferred to the laptop and the desktop is no longer activated. If so is it possible to switch the activation back to the desktop? Thanks for the help.

So here is something for the group today. I found myself in a situation where I had blocked Windows 10 from getting access to me and my work using a program called Destroy Windows Spying. I happen to know for a fact that this program is not intentionally trying to hurt me but it really scorched Windows when it tried to block everything. Now this is exactly what I wanted but I need to temporarily set things so I can authenticate my new software version as I recently upgraded my version of 10 and found myself unable to connect to the authentication server in order to set things up. This PARTICULAR problem happens to be one that is hard to find information on and if I remember correctly I'm going to end up having to find the current address windows uses for authentication and punching it in to authenticate before deleting that entry again to resecure my system from that avenue of attack by Microsoft (and yes they are effectively the virus infectors that give the system I use and that is how I consider them to be these days after Windows 10). The problem here really is the details associated with the outline I gave above. Anyone willing to walk things through here please? Thank you.

Incase anyone missed it, you can now keep your windows active after component upgrades i.e motherboard, cpu. " If you made a significant hardware change to your device (such as replacing the motherboard) Windows 10 might no longer be activated. If you're running Windows 10 (Version 1607) and added your Microsoft account and linked it to the digital license on your device, you can use the Activation troubleshooter to reactivate Windows. For more info, see Using the Activation troubleshooter."

From what I have read online, it seems like I would be able to create a windows 10 recovery flash drive, run it on any computer and just skip the activiation, and that should allow me to run an unlicensed version of windows 10, only having a few customization restrictions, annoying activation prompts and a watermark to deal with. Is this about right? Well... I'm building a new PC, and my old Laptop has a retail version of Windows 10 that was upgraded from windows 8. It is linked to my microsoft account. One added detail that I don't know weather is relevant or not is that my laptop is from Brazil, where I was living at the time (am now in Canada). So... If I want to transfer my account over to my new computer, and run unlicensed windows on my laptop, can I? And if so, will it require me to remove my account from my laptop before adding it to the PC? How would this work? Thanks to anyone willing to help.

Hello there! I've been lurking for a while and never made an account but after 2 years of working in a PC Repair Shop I finally hit a wall I can't get around. English is my third language, please don't eat me alive. I have this PC from the early 2000s with a fried board that, as usual, has some vital programs that would cost thousands of euros to replace. The first step was to find a similar donor PC and transfer the hard drive. After doing that, and after resolving some issues with user folder not showing up, we finally can log in-- oh wait, it needs to be activated. No biggie, the original PC still has it's license sticker. (Note: I took the images from the internet, the originals are in italian) . So I go for option number 2 ("Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate Windows"), and get to the second part. "Wait a minute" I think to myself, "It never asked for a product key". I shrug, set my location to Italy, call the number (as usual, not a real person, just a nice robot-lady voice), give her the ID from step 3 (it displays one for me), and type the confirmation ID for step 4. Lo and behold, it doesn't work, citing a bad product key. "Doesn't matter, I have the original anyways". So then I press 'Change Product Key' and type the product key and press 'Update', and I wait... and wait... and wait... I tried other spare Keys I had, even a random one, nada. The longest I waited was 4/5 hours. The internet connection is there because if I unplug the cable it tells me the key can not be verified (I also tried installing a couple PCI Ethernet cards, just to be sure...). Since I can only enter windows in Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Prompt, I can't do the "change the registry value" trick because it works only in normal mode, which I can not access. I tried looking for command line solutions but found nothing. Before I go dumpster-diving for an early 2000s board, is there something that can be done at this stage? Did I miss something stupid that I should be ashamed of?

Some users - including myself - are experiencing a phenomenom where Windows 10 Pro license holders are given warnings about being downgraded to Home and being told furthermore to reactivate Windows 10. Sources: https://www.forbes.com/sites/jasonevangelho/2018/11/08/windows-10-pro-licenses-are-being-downgraded-to-windows-10-home/ https://www.windowslatest.com/2018/11/08/microsofts-windows-10-activation-system-is-broken-a-fix-is-coming/ This arised from a Reddit thread after many users reported that their Windows was being deactivated and prompted them to reactivate, and the source apparently comes from a server-side bug from Microsoft's activation system. Luckily, Microsoft are already working on a fix, suppressing the panic that this strange oddity of activation has started. Those affected can only wait for a fix to arrive, whether that be through a Windows update or other method. I myself have seen the "Your Windows key is expiring soon" message box, but my Windows is absolutely fine, and I'm using Windows 10 Pro. Lucky me! I personally feel like this won't last long, and those trying to activate will only need to wait two or three days at max to use Windows 10 in its entirety. I am still admittedly kind of fearful that my Windows too will deactivate and are afraid of restarting my PC for that reason. For now, I say do not panic, the activation server is probably just feeling down this week, someone will cheer it up in the coming days.

It would seem that Microsoft is having issues with their licensing servers for users who have Windows 10 Pro. I myself have actually been hit by this. and there is no official news on the issues from Microsoft at this point. but I did find an article about it over at https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/11/08/windows_10_activation/ Presently Windows Activation is reporting error code 0xC004C003 and if you try to run the trouble shooter. it might say that there there is a home license available for your system. if you read through the article, people have managed to get a hold of customer support and they are telling people that the issue should hopefully be resolved in a couple of days and just to hang tight.

So back when they gave away free upgrades to Window 10 I went ahead and did it. That's the only copy of Windows 10 I have and now I need to reinstall it on a new drive. I downloaded Microsoft's tool and am creating a an install disc. How can I activate it though once it's installed though? Obviously I never had a box with the key. The computer I'm reinstalling is still functional. Is there somewhere I can go to find my activation key?

I recently upgraded my motherboard and cpu to a ryzen 5 2600. I made sure to connect my license to my MS account so i could reactivate it later. I rebuilt the system and did a clean install of windows but when i went to activate windows and ran the troubleshooter it said "we weren't able to activate windows on this device". I then pressed "I changed hardware on this device recently" and logged in to my MS account but my new install of windows didn't show up even though i logged in on the correct microsoft account. On their website it finds both devices but not in the troubleshooter. Please i don't want to have to buy windows again. I have a retail copy of windows 10 home

Thousands have asked this, and thousands of answers still haven't helped me. I have my Win10 product key. It's the online version of Windows 10 Home. I'm building a TOTALLY new computer, besides my HDD that I'll reuse after it's formatted. (It didn't have windows on it anyway, so no reason that would matter.) Will I need to buy Windows 10 again? Or can I just input my product key? I have my Microsoft account linked to Windows, also.
