So i've been looking at upgrading to an AC router and the prices range from $80-$300. I dont know if just getting a basic $100 AC router will get me more performance or would I benefit more going with a more expensive one. Will I see a significant performance gain going from my linksys N to an AC router? What makes up up the difference in price when comparing a cheaper router to a more expensive one? If they're based on the same specifications wouldnt they be able to transmit the same amount of data at the same speed? or am I missing something?

I bought a Linksys EA6500-RM from NCIX for 60 re-certified (I assume that means refurbished), and am wondering about one spec I didn't find anywhere about the included wifi with my motherboard. The included card is an Intel Centrino N 2230 and I want to use it on the 5ghz band. I know that it runs on 802.11N, but as far as I know, that's an irrelevant spec. The router uses 802.11AC and is capable of 5ghz, 2.4. or simultaneous. I am already limelight streaming with horrible packet loss (on 2.4 ghz) and its unplayable, that is what got me to research, and there seem to be a lot of benefits to a higher end router. Help would be appreciated.

My Q is about: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-motherboard-z97prowifiac According to http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z97PROWiFi_ac/ it uses 802.11ac would this be backwards compatible with previous standards like 'n'? I'm pretty sure my router cannot transfer data over ac. sorry for all the hyper nerds if my terminology is incorrect - i haven't studied wifi standards...yet.

So personally I am looking forward to Assassin's Creed 4 the most right now, but GTA V looks excellent overall as well, it is a tough decision to be honest. What do you guys think? Please keep the discussion civil please and please do not start a war, I am personally going to buy both games.

So which router is the "best" that money can buy?! Is WRT really worth the extra $$?

Hi guys, So, let me start off with my setup: FreeNAS Server AMD Phenom X4 @ 3.20 GHz 8GB of DDR3 1333MHz RAM USB for OS 4TB Seagate HDD with 40GB SSD for cache Connected directly to Router via Ethernet My PC i5 3570k Connected to Router with PowerlineDLink 500Mbps Powerline Adapters, these Wireless Router ASUS RT-AC68R using 5.0GHz (AC) signal Connected to Powerline network with a Powerline adapter that has a Gigabit port (this was important in my purchase) Chromecast/TV Google's Chromecast device Sony 42" Bravia HDTV Connected to Router via AC Wireless Plex Media Server Running on the FreeNAS system alongside Transmission (BitTorrent client). Streams locally at 720p or 480p. Alright, so, I am using Plex Media Server to stream a video to My PC, which then casts the video from it to the Chromecast on my TV. Unfortunately, this saturates my network which somehow causes the video to be stuttering on my TV. Because of how I'm doing it, it is going over the Powerline network twice. From Plex on FreeNAS over ethernet to the Router over powerline to My PC, over powerline back to the Router, then to the Chromecast over wireless. Obviously this is relatively inefficient. It'd be much better for it to go from the FreeNAS system & Plex to the Router then to a device (say, a phone) and then be cast onto the TV. However, then it'd be going over Wireless twice, effectively. Casting things like Netflix and such to our TV works fine, but with Plex it doesn't, and the way Plex's full screen works requires me to use Chrome's (the browser) full screen cast feature, which is in Beta, to actually watch the show. It works somewhat fine using Tab casting, but certain things either get cut off, or it causes the stuttering to be worse. Not sure why. Plex is set to send the video at 720p (although switching to 480p didn't help at all), and Chromecast is set to send at whichever Plex is set at (I change it myself). I think I'm just reaching the limits of Powerline, even if it's supposed to be 500Mbps which is of course the theoretical limit, but I would expect at least 100Mbps minimum. I'm surprised this setup didn't work better honestly. It just seems like there's enough good hardware here to make it work well, but apparently not. Side Note: Chrome's Screen cast makes the audio sound very tinny. It's horrible.

So my friend and I have been looking into wireless adapters. We both refuse to use a USB adapter because of negative experiences in the past (for both of us) so we were looking exclusively for a PCIe card. I really wanted Bluetooth as well and refused to get a USB adapter (once again, bad experiences) Since it's damn near impossible to find an exclusively Bluetooth PCIe card, we tried to find something with both wireless and Bluetooth. That's when we found it The GC-WB867D-I Fully qualified Bluetooth 4.0 IEEE802.11ac standards compliant Antenna to support WLAN 2Tx2R transmission High speed wireless connection up to 867 Mbps Bluetooth Enhances Data Rate (EDR) support It looks like the perfect thing. And it also costs about 50 bucks Sweet mother of god. is it too good to be true? Somebody tell me it's not. Because I really want it. (can't find any reviews) Here's a link http://ca.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4739#ov

Hi guys, I have the Netgear R6100 router. I have this option unchecked on the WiFi page: "Enable SSID Broadcast". I do this for security reasons. Only people who I give the name/password should be able to connect to it. I don't want random passerbys to see it, but I want the people I let connect to it. However, I have to give them the SSID/password every day. Their devices never remember them even when "Remember this network" is checked. This is on an iMac specifically. Why? This particular person has a similar setup at his home (where the SSID is invisible, but he can connect to it if he knows the name/password), and his devices at his house remember the network just fine. What gives? Thanks, Vitalius.

So im looking for an ac router that works. I don't want to have to restart it every month and I don't want to suffer from slow wireless speeds and short range in my home. I've been looking at routers from Asus, Linksys, Buffalo and many other brands but I don't know which one works and is the best. What router would you guys reccomend?/Have experience with?

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/soaprouter/soap-first-smart-router-w-touch-display-powered-by This seems like a good idea for simplifying keeping your wireless network up and running, and all the cool functionality looks really cool as well I think it looks very innovative, and would be a good option for users looking to keep track of their devices or an excuse to upgrade to wireless AC The specs are also quite impressive for a router The site likes to refer to it as a "smart-hub" instead of a router, and it might wake some other manufacturers attention to the same thing, if it goes through. There are two different models, which are separated like this I think the concept looks cool, and I'm looking forward to see how this develops. There are lots of more in-depth specs and more images during the process on making it on the site, so I would suggest you to take a look. What's your take on this?

I have tried an $80 router and a $40 adapter, but they were terrible. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127496 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127519 Any suggestions for better ones that won't break the bank?

I'm moving in with my girlfriend soon and I want to have a good modem and router that can handle both of our systems gaming. My budget right now is $300 for both. I am willing to go a bit higher if needed. I need something that has both 2.4ghz and 5ghz that has ac. I would love any and all suggestions.

I was reading about routers, dual band, etc. and saw that the high-end routers from Asus and others claimed to have speeds of thousands of megabytes per second. Now, I'm guessing that's not the actual speed that I would get if I got one since here in Scotland I get 8mbs max and that's considered wizardry. So what's the correlation between the speeds that routers have written on the tin and what you would really get. I mean, why spend all that money when I can get a single band, 300mbs router and network card (which is what I have)?

According to asus-support; the wireless AC module that comes included with some of their upper tier z87 boards is supposed to be compatible with their lower tier boards (pro, expert) as well, but they don't sell them separately and I can't find anyone else who does either. Does anyone have a clue where I might find one or will I just have to keep my eye on ebay?

Here is the deal, i have just got fiber, and they did not deliver a router, even thoug that was what i thougth. So i need a new AC router which is going to deliver to about 8+ wireless devices, the price range is about a 100-120 bucks. And i dont need any fancy apps or likely.

Hi all, I need a new wifi-router. The reason being that I built myself a new desktop with a AC-wireless network card. And the problem is that said wireless card nukes my router or something, and then it disconnects everyone and won't work properly before a power reset. The router I currently have is old as the old man himself (G-standard). I want to know if a normal N-router will do the suicide act too (as I might be able to get one for very cheap).

so I have a rather old router, only supports b/g... ready to upgrade into the n/ac world! just... on a budget. ive been doing a lot of googling trying to understand all this jargon, and I think its starting to make sense! i found two N routers and one AC router on amazon i like, but need opinions/more recomendation on it. because super cheap: http://www.amazon.com/Cisco-Refurbished-Simultaneous-Dual-Band-Wireless-N/dp/B005S0BYQ6/ref=sr_1_5?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1392834845&sr=1-5 because, not sure, just looks good: http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-App-Enabled-Refurbished-Dual-Band-Wireless-N/dp/B00HU7C7Q6/ref=sr_1_8?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1392834845&sr=1-8 because AC: http://www.amazon.com/Edimax-Dual-Band-Installation-Smartphone-BR-6478AC/dp/B00CEEP3DE but yeah, just post your opinion... under $100 at least N but AC would be nice prefer dual band.

UPDATE: 26th DEC 2013 Ok I contacted asus about the issue and got a response yesterday (on Christmas day I'm impressed!) and they told me to upgrade to the latest firmware 3.0.0.4.374.501 now I'm not that dumb and I had already checked for a new version in the routers admin page using the check button and it said it was the the latest when it was actually 3 versions old so it seems anyone who is having issues should check manually for a firmware update. I undid all of the other settings to see if the firmware update alone had helped and it has completely fixed the issue I am now getting 75mbs top speed and around the house I'm getting 40-60mbs. I think this may be a solution for other asus routers as well. Ramping the tx power to 200 helps boost speeds in the more busier wifi spots in my house thankyou Alibaladin for suggesting that as it actually makes quite a difference for all devices. Thanks everyone for suggestions I really appreciate it. Hello I recently upgraded to a ASUS rt-68u as mentioned but I seem to be having an issue with android devices not they are not wireless ac ones. I have A Nexus 7 (old model) completely stock on 4.4) and I have a samsung s3 running the carbon rom 4.2. I get the problem with both devices where I connect to the 2.4 network and get 65mbps which is fine for what i use them (and I think its the max speed of them anyway). but after less than a minute on both devices the speed drops down to 5mbs I have tried with the devices next to the, in the same room, and a few other places around the house and I still get the same issue. The only way to fix it is to turn wifi on and off on the tablet as said before this only fixes it for a minute or so. I haven't changed any of the wifi setting besides for putting a password on and disabling WPS (I don't like it). If anyone has any ideas on what might be wrong I would greatly appreciate it as I can't even enjoy web browsing on them anymore. Thanks

How efficient would this be? How would I go about doing it... Anyone know of a good guide? And also is it worth it? problems, solutions, good and bad, etc. Thanks

There is quite a massive difference (although not quite as massive as I expected TBH) between PS4 and everything else, better textures, particles, reflections, shadows, AA and draw distance are some of the things I noticed, it should also be running in 900p rather than 720p (which is still disappointing). I'm definitely curious how this will compare to the PC version, there will obviously be the advantage of higher resolutions but hopefully the game will be better optimised than other AC games.

Hi guys, I'm curently unable to run a Gigabit cable across my house( a problem with my wife ). I'm planning on getting a AC1900 setup consisting of a router and a PCE wireless adapter. For the adapter I've settled for an Asus PCE-AC68(which I believe is the one working on Z87 motherboards). I havent chosen a router yet though... Curently deciding between a RT-AC68 and a EA6900... Can you tell me which one is better in terms of coverage and speed ? Or sugest another router/adapter perhaps...
