Hey All, Last week I finally received the H440 case and was able to put this toy together. Here are the specs: Case - NZXT H440 black/red Motherboard - ASUS Maximus VI Formula Processor - I7 4770K Memory - 16GB Corsair Dominator Platinum, DDR3 2400 Graphics Card - ASUS GTX 780 PSU - EVGA SuperNova 1000W P2, 80 Plus Platinum Cooling - Kraken X60 Storage - (2) Samsung 840 EVO, 250GB SSD's Accessories: NZXT CB-LED Red light strip Corsair M65 Mouse Corsair K95 Keyboard I had some issues with the Kraken unit during installation but I think I got it figured out now. Other than that, it all worked out just fine. I am now trying to overclock it, but I need more time to learn more about this process. Asus' AI Suite III can do this relatively quickly and painlessly, but I was getting the blue screen of death even at the minimum 4.2 GHz setting. So at this point I am running it on stock speed as of last night and will see if anything crashes again. If not, I will then crank it up again, but probably not as much as 2400 MHz on the memory, which I think is causing the problems here. In any event, here it is... Even at stock clock, I was getting 90 FPS in World of Tanks at max settings on 1920 x 1080 - what an eye opening experience coming from 16 FPS on my HP laptop, lol!! Let me know what you think

I'm looking to complete my build, and the last part I need is a GPU. I was either thinking about getting a GTX 780 or a 2GB or 4GB 770. If I get the 780, then I will have to stick with the stock cooler for a bit on my 4770k until I can afford a better one. If I go with the 770 though, I can afford a better cooler like a Swiftech H220 and get some overclocking going. Is the 780 worth the extra $130 or so and not being able to overclock? I have to run my monitor at 1680x1050, so I can't even do 1080p without everything getting too small to see and inducing eye strain. Or should I just wait for the 880 to come out, and see how the prices drop with the older generation?

Computer Freezes Immediately with Prime95
Hank_Tech posted a topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
Hey guys, I just built my first OC capable PC and I am now running into some issues. I was just watching youtube before, and my computer froze up solid. It didn't BSOD or give any error. The video stopped, I couldn't move my mouse at all, no keyboard inputs would work. I held down the power button and rebooted my machine. I downloaded Prime95 and tried to run a small FFT test on 8 threads, and it locked up immediately after pressing start stress test. I shut down my comp again, cleared my CMOS, and booted again. This time, I tried a 4 thread test, with the same result. I have no idea what is going on. I had tried a bit of an over clock earlier today by going into my UEFI and having it do an auto tune, and it got it up to 4.4GHz at 1.4 volts. I didn't really wanna run my CPU like that, so I just reset it to default. Could this have something to do with it? I was just gaming with no issue before this happened (TF2 at Max settings). I could really use some help, because I just got these parts yesterday. Parts: i7 4770k CPU (stock cooler) Gigabyte GA Z87-HD3 motherboard 1 4GB stick Corsair Vengeance RAM Gigabyte 650Ti GPU 250GB HDD 400W Seasonic Fanless Powersupply 80+ Gold certified I don't have a case because its on backorder, I am running it as a "test bench" on top of my motherboard box. I have always disconnected the system from power and grounded myself before going near the machine or messing with any of the components. Notes: At the last freeze, I had CPUIDHWMonitor open. It looks like the cores were at about 35-40 degrees Celsius and the voltage as around 1-1.1. At least, thats what it was at the moment of freezing. Could it just be a lack of voltage as the CPU kicks up to turbo mode? -
As the title states, my three year motherboard is failing, and I need to plan a replacement. Current build: NZXT Phantom 630 Amd FX-6100 overclocked to 4.2ghz ASUS M5A97 Evo(mobo) Corsair Fms-? 8gb 1600mhz Galaxy HOF Geforce 770 Corsair 750w psu (cant remember line) Corsair H110 cpu cooler Just purchased 500gb Samsung 840 evo ( to rule out hard drive failure plus its shiny) Intel 320 120gb ssd Adata s900 128gb ssd So this is a upper end machine and I want to attempt to futureproof the cpu-mobo upgrade as best as one can in the computer world Seeing as I am going to a college that I am basically selling my soul to next year, I need to have as much of my rig paid for before the loans start rolling in. very important: white and black color scheme only I was heavily considering an asrock exteme 6 z87 motherboard and putting a 4770k on it especially now that the 4770k is starting to drop in price significantly. But then I heard about the impending haswell refresh and the z97 chipset I halted plans to upgrade until the release Haswell-E but it seems like the processors are seeing only a marginal bump over the current processors, and what I am most upset about is the news that the 4790k will not be released until late Q2. My latest plan seems to be waiting for a nice z97 motherboard, with broadwell compatibility, (in black so who knows how long that will take) and getting the current gen 4770k at a cheaper price, that way when broadwell/whatever comes after will still be motherboard compatible. Do you guys think this is a good idea? Is it worth having a desktop that wont run games for a few months to wait for the 4970k? Is it not worth getting a z97 board this early and putting haswell on it? Please help me decide, because I will not have the money to do nearly any upgrading for the next 5 years oh and do you think the 750w psu could support a second 770hof with the lesser power req's of haswell?

HEY ALL! first time here on linus tech tips forum ran into a dilemma Building a new rig after the razer blade failed on me anyways heres my problem.... Originally i was planning on getting a 4930k and rampage 4 black, but after doing a little more research, i found out that haswell-e is coming really really soon, but not soon enough for me since i need a computer badly. it will also cost me a lot of money buying these 2 components and resell them after the x99 + haswell-e comes out, which i will most likely upgrade to, if the performance boost is siginificant. so i thought to myself that i might as well buy a 4770k and a z87 mobo and upgrade to the new haswell refresh, UNTILL intel decided that z87 will not support haswell refresh or any future cpus Because of the fact that i need a computer as soon as possible, i am going to be down a few hundred either way. i have given myself 2 choices 1) 4930k if the haswell-e performance is not significant 2) 4770k and sell it when x99 chipset comes out. i dont want anything below 4770k because my rig is going to be relaly sexy, and i dont want any last-gen products.. Brainstorm time! thanks guys!

Hello all! I'm upgrading my computer, and have a budget of $1000 for the CPU/motherboard. My use case would be Gaming, programming, and video editing in the near future. The specs that matter, and are carrying over are: 2 EVGA 780 Classifieds 850W Thermaltake PSU The entire build will be watercooled. I was thinking about a 4930k for the CPU, is it worth it? If so, what motherboard? If not, what's better? Thanks all for suggestions!

Hey its Khan Thompson I just wanted to ask if all my parts will work together and if they do, is there a place where i can get it put together then sent to me (A website i could go on)? I want to know if this will also look good as i have not had much experience with these parts. With the water cooling do i have everything i need(new to water cooling also)? http://au.pcpartpicker.com/user/Khan123/saved/3ZWx If you have any suggestion to change stuff on there to make the system better without much more cost. This system will be used for video editing, high resolution gaming (on more then one screen), watching movies all the other normal computer stuff. Thax for the help

To start, this is my first build, and I ordered the hardware without too much thought into the PSU. I used the eXtreme calculator prior to buying it, and looked for similar topics with similar builds, but I'm still not confident in the one I ordered. Am I wrong? Or do I need to send it back and get another? I did have upgrades in mind for the near future. Also, primarily used for gaming. I ordered the EVGA 600w 80 plus bronze, along with this hardware: Case – Corsair 200r Motherboard – MSI Z87 MPOWER CPU – Intel i7 4770k GPU – Nvidea GTX 760 Memory – 2x 8gb Hard drive – 1TB SSD – 128gb Liquid Cooling – Corsair H60 Drive – DVD/CD RW Controller - Fan Controller, touch screen According to the PSU calculator I'm reaching a recommended 451w without overclocking, and 40-50w more overclocked. I added the max amount of fans of eight, when it only comes with two. So, is it enough?

Hey there! I am sure this post has been reposted over, and over again... But I just can't seem to properly decide whether to go with the 4670k or 4770k. I am going to be gaming (high/ultra gaming at 1080p.. Battlefield 3 and 4, Dota 2, Crysis 2, Assassin's Creed, Titanfall, so on...), doing some little video rendering and editing (not that much), using photoshop Cs5 quite a bit and using various programs such as Visio, Project and Visual Studios. So, that's basically it. If you ask, pretty much I was going for 8gb 9-9-9-24 1600Mhz RAM with GTX 780. Thanks in advance!

Hey guys, So I'm getting the CPU and motherboard (i7 4770k and GA Z87 HD3) for my new build in the next couple of days, and I was wondering what would be a good way about binning my CPU would be. I will only have the stock cooler, but I saw online that some people were able to get their chips up to 4.6Ghz with the stock cooler. I have never over clocked before, but I know some of the basic things like multiplier, cache ratio, voltage, and some of the RAM settings. So what would be a safe setting to test the quality of CPU that I get if I only have the stock cooler?

Hey forum, I was literally entering in my credit card number to buy the parts for my PC, when I got an email saying another CPU was on sale. I originally was going to go with a Xeon E3 1230v3, but then the email gave me a coupon code for the i7 4770k. The i7 is about 50 bucks more than the Xeon, but is the performance really worth it? Should I pay more for the 4770k and get the iGPU plus over clocking and all that jazz, or save the money and go with the Xeon. Need thoughts fast, looking to buy within the hour!!!

I have a 4770k and I run shaders and a 512x texture pack (Oh wait it crashes with that, so I mean a 256x texture pack) Also I have a 780 if that matters. AND it takes like 90 seconds to load a texture pack. Am I doing something wrong?

Hey guys, I just put together a slick new build with a 4770k, Maximus VI Formula, 780 Ti, Corsair Vengeance, 840 Evos and a custom water cooling loop with a triple rad to cool my 4770k. I am attempting to overclock the 4770k now but I have had NO success. I am not new to OC'ing as I previously had a 3570K OC'ed to 4.8 GHz stable. I cannot get this thing to even 4.0 GHz even if I turn the voltage up past 1.2 Volts. What gives? Am I missing some settings or something? Thanks all!

Hello all! So I was waiting for some downloads, and pondering a few different things... But something that stuck on my head was this, "What programs benefit from hyper threading?" Like, I know "editing" benefits, but like what programs, and in what way? Is it just like video rendering? Orrr? All help appreciated

Hi all, so about a month ago I purchased a 4770k, and finally got around to wanting to OC it, i am planning on doing it over the weekend, as I will be able to let me system be for a while. Im new to this, and want advice on what software to use, currently I use Core Temp 1.0 RC6, and RealTemp 3.70 for monitoring and used the Intel diagnostics tool for stress test to check the system, and the test only runs a few minutes so I need something else, Im mostly looking for cheap ro free software because I wont be over clocking again any time soon. So my first question how many volts is the reccomended to use, should I got for 70c or 75c under full load, is 24 hours enough for a stress test, and any other information I should know for a first time OverClocker, all I have done so far is watch Linuses guide. Im also planning to get the Intel Overclockers protection plan, as soon as I see that my cpu can actually oc and i did not loose the lottery. Please post download links for any reccomended software. Sorry for the paragraph but I need this information, thank you all in advance. P.S. forgot to mention, im using a corsair h100i, corsair sp120 quesit fans in push, in a 750d case, my mobo is the sniper 5 from gigabyte, memory is corsair vengence pro 2133mhz, lastly dont know if needed but using a gtx 780 ti windforce OC version.

Hi All, I have FINALLY finished my new build (its been a long time coming, very busy with travelling and work). Here is what ive put together thus far... cpu: i7 4770k motherboard: Asus Z87-C GPU: Asus GTX 770 Direct CU2 OC CPU Cooling: Corsair H110 SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB HDD: Seagate 2TB Memory: 16GB Kingston HyperX Blu PSU: Corsair HX650 This is my first proper gaming build. Ive never overclocked a CPU (or anything for that matter) before, and i just wanted to get some good tips on where to start, how to start, good links for step by step guide ect. Ive looked at a few good videos on youtube and they talk about stress testing with certain software - so that kind of threw me off as i would have no idea what to download. Is it all done withing the BIOS??? I also want to over clock my 770, but from what ive seen on youtube you can get a pretty decent oc just from using GPU tweak (but any tips for this would also be much appreciated). Thanks in Advance! TR

I'm building my first PC and instead of a Budget build I decided to go all out with it. But I also need to be able to transport it back and forth relatively easily so i decided to do a mATX build so here it is tell me what you think! (I'm using it for recording and editing HD gameplay as well as just gaming) Case: Corsair 350d Motherboard: ASUS Maximus VI Gene CPU: Intel 4770K GPU's: 2 Gigabyte GTX 780 TI GHZ Edition's RAM: 32gb of Corsair red DDR3 Power Supply: Corsair AX 860 CPU Cooler: Corsair h100i (as well as two Corsair sp120's) Case Fans: 2 Corsair af140 and 1 af120 both with red led SSD: Samsung 840 EVO series 120gb Hard Drive: 1tb WD black drive OS: Windows 8.1 Pro So comment what you think and any suggestions! (This adds up to $3136 and $3890 after peripherals Ex: mouse, keyboard, headset, & Mic setup) PS I already have a ASUS VG348QE Monitor

Hello all! I was just sitting here pondering the web, and I found an interesting post referring to the 2700k. Now I know my differences between i5 and i7, but I haven't really thought much about the 2700k and such. 1.What are the differences between a CPU like the 2700k and a 4670k or a 4770k? 2.What are they made for individually? 3.What do they do for gaming? 4.Why does the 2700k exist? (Kind of tied in with Q.2) If you guys could answer, that would be great ! I like to keep educated, and I wanted to know some information.

Hello, everyone! I'm not really sure where to start, so I'll just jump on in. I could really use some proffesional help with overclocking my CPU. I've never overlocked anything before; I am aware of the risks. If it's worth mentioning, I have watched several videos of Linus talking about overclocking, and the general how-to, including a video talking about my specific mobo and CPU, but I'm still at quite a bit of a loss. I guess I should first find out if my equipment is capable of overclocking; here is my system: CPU - Intel Core i7-4770K @ 3.5Ghz RAM - Corsair Vengeance low-profile series - 16GB (That's two 8GB sticks.) Motherboard - ASUS Maximus VI Formula Cooler - Noctua NH-D14 (RealTemp shows that I'm getting no higher than 26 Celsius per core with 3-6% load) PSU - Corsair HX850 HX series @ 850W. GPU - Nvidia Geforce GTX 770 SSD - Seagate 600 series - 240GB ~Now, I'm not interested in messing with my GPU at the moment (unless it's necessary for the OC), just want to get a higher speed on my CPU. Assuming I'm good to go for the overclock, could somebody please paint me a general picture of what all I need to do? Where in the BIOS do I start? What all will I need to adjust to affect my CPU speed, just the processor or RAM as well? What variables do I need to keep in mind? What software should I download to help me with my overclock? So far I only have CPU-Z, and RealTemp, and I'm not 100% familiar with them. Basically, I need a detailed lesson in overclocking to put it plain and simple. I hope that's not too much to ask, and of course, I'm really appreciative to all of those who wish to help me. Please let me know if I've posted this in the wrong section of the forums, I'm relatively new. If more information about my system is required, please ask and I will be more than willing to post it here. Thank you!

I want to get a new motherboard (my current one has a horrible BIOS and is lacking in features) and CPU (the i5 isn't keeping up for what I am doing so I am going for a 4770K) and I need some help. I can get the Z87 MPOWER MAX for $179.99 USD and the Maximus VI Hero for $169.99 USD. I know they differ in quality, the Hero being mid-high end and the MPOWER MAX being an extremely high end board, but I wonder which one is better. I for one love MSI's BIOS and the board itself, but I have never tried ASUS boards. The ASUS board is nice and all, but the color scheme is too conventional. The MPOWER, on the other hand, has a much different color scheme. Also, any suggestions under $200 are appreciated.

Hi guys. Im planning to build a professional video editing build. My work deals with HD video editing using Adobe premiere pro, After effects, Speed grade, Pinnacle studio, Photoshop cs6. And strictly no Games. Please help me in building a nice rig that can work without upgrades for next 2 years atleast. Sorted out 4930k & 4770k processors, but lots of confusion regarding socket 2011 motherboards ( saw so many negative reviews with problems ). My budget will be max $2500.
