Hello everyone I plan on building a PC within the next couple of weeks that features the Asus RoG Swift PG279Q 165hz 1440p gaming monitor that Linus reviewed recently. However since most of my budget is going towards the monitor, I have to really try and save as much money as possible on other components. I want to run: Competitive games at 165hz 1440p Ultra settings Triple A games at 165hz 1440p medium+ settings The refresh rate is more important to me than the graphics settings, and I would be willing to turn both of these down to maintain the high refresh rate. My questions are: What is the cheapest intel i5 Z87/Z97 based chip that I can get that will not bottle neck the graphics card that I decide to buy? I was looking at the intel i5-4660 (UK) (USA) Is the Nvidia GTX 980 currently the best option to buy at the current price point (I would've thought that it would be considering scaling issues with SLI)? Thanks for reading, -Xyatron

What's up people, I'm finally getting to overclocking my CPU after having it for roughly 3 years. It's my first time OC so I researched a bit and decided to give a whack at it. Anyways, right now I'm running my CPU at 4.3 GHz Core Voltage 1.26V. I've been running MSI Kombuster's CPU Burner and Core temp to stress test and keep track of my temperatures for past 45 mins. Oh yeah I forgot one thing, I'm running an EVO 212 for my CPU Cooler. Here's my results so far in the picture. Looks like I'm getting around an average of 68c Max Temperature. What do you guys think? Should I tone my voltage down? Or is it fine at where it is? Also is the CPU stress test I'm using any good? Any feedback is appreciated.

Hi there, i recently more or less finished my rig or at least i am not gonna upgrade it for some time now, but i am having hard time trying to OC my CPU. I presume its best to start with my specs: Mobo: Asus Rog Maximus Hero VI CPU: Intel i5 4670K CPU cooler: Bequiet Dark Rock Advanced RAM: 2x Kingston HyperX Fury 4GB (dual channel 8GB kit) GPU: MSI GTX 950 Gaming System drive: 120GB Samsung 840 Evo Secondary drive: 1TB Seagate Barracuda PSU: Seasonic (Energyknight) SS650HT (Case: NZXT H440) So after i recently obtained the last piece of this puzzle, the Bequiet CPU cooler, i started to fiddle around with CPU multiplier and voltage (following LTT Hasswel OC guide on YT, not skipping all preparation steps) and as i am newbie in overclocking game, i started slow trying to get stable 4.0Ghz on 1.2 Vcore. Thing is I had to ramp up Vcore to 1.25ish to get at least somewhat stable 4.0Ghz and going past 4.0 (or sometimes even my "stable" 4.0 when running prime95) results in "whea uncorrectable error", or "clock watchdog timeout" BSODs. Temps seem to be ok in mid 60s only going to around 70 when i try stabilizing 4.1-4.2Ghz with Vcore over 1.3. Is it possible that my PSU (having just 4pin ATX power not 8pin) is affecting my OC, am i doing something else wrong, or was i just really unlucky in silicon lottery? Anyway thx in advance for any advice i might get.

Hi there! I powered up Real Temp today to see my temps a bit and I have noticed something that concerns me.. I have my i5 4670k overclocked to 4.4 ghz in dynamic mode but Real Temp is showing up constant overclock as if it was not down clocking at all.. I'm running Windows 10 with 2 SSD's, the OS SSD configured to Maximum Reliability in Samsung Magician but I don't think that this would be the case..

Will a i5 4670K non overclocked bottleneck a GTX980ti?

Hey, so I have the choice of a 4790 or a 4670k as a processor. What would be better? A i7 with a HDD which I could add a ssd down the line? Or save my money all together and just go with the i5 option?

My computer specs are: Intel Core i5 4670k GIGABYTE GTX 780 Kingston HyperX Beast 16GB, 2400Mhz MSI Z87-GD65 Gaming What I was doing these days.. I was overclocking my cpu to see what can I achieve.. I'm currently running on 4.4 ghz at 1.150V with everything else on auto. The only setting I have changed is to Dynamic Mode not Fixed. Now I know that there's only a small difference between 4.2 and 4.4 (only in benchmarks) but still I would love to know at what voltages are you running this CPU and what speeds.

I have an intel core i5 4670k with intel HD Graphics 4600 and ever since I pugraded to Windows 10, my screen freezes from time to time displaying a message that the graphics for windows 8.1 had stopped working and had recovered, I get it almost every time I play League of Legends, my drivers are supposed to be updated, I have these specs. If you guys need anything else, please tell me, thanks.

Hi Everyone, Today after moving to a new case and redoing my thermal paste I noticed that my temperatures were too high (50-55C at idle). I used arctic silver 5 in a cooked grain of rice amount. I decided to do the paste again and found that it had only covered an area slightly bigger than a quarter. This time I added more, but itdid not improve my temps. I did find that one tube on my cooler can get very hot, but the other won't. Attached are pictures of my computer at idle and load.

My 4670k was running on the stock intel cooler with no issues as of 2 days ago. I booted up RUST for the first time in about a year ( http://playrust.com/ ) on steam and cranked a few graphics settings. I noticed it was extremely jumpy and laggy so I checked my CPU temps. All 4 cores were maxed at 100% and around 100 degrees celsius with the fan at 100% speed. Needless to say I shut down the game ASAP and ended all other processes. The CPU remained at 100% load however. I let it try to cool down for about 3 minutes but during that time neither the fan speed/cpu load/cpu temps changed. I had to just shut down the PC manually. I checked my heatsink and it was slightly dusty and the thermal paste was kinda dried out. Yesterday I went and bought a coolermaster hyper 103 and installed it with fresh thermal paste. The computer was running cool at around 55-60 degrees under world of warcraft and google chrome load for about 20 minutes. I booted up rust once again, it was running MUCH smoother for about 5 minutes. After 5 minutes it ran up to 100% load, 100 degrees and wouldn't cool down despite shutting it and everything else down from processes. Does anyone know what the heck is going on with my CPU?? I figure its one of two things RUST might have some process that takes all my CPU (its in alpha) My CPU is dead (Pls no.. im broke) CPU: 4670k GPU: R9 270x RAM: HyperX Grey 1600

Firstly, my Specs: Mobo: Gigabyte B85M-D3H CPU: i5 4670K Cooling: Raijintek Themis Direct Contact CPU Cooler PSU: Vibox 600W 80Plus Certified PSU (Anything else that you need to know/might help, let me know) I'm new to this, so please forgive me if I get some of the terminology wrong. I'm trying to do a small OC, up to 3.6 or maybe 3.8 (Not sure my budget cooling will be up to that much) I know that my mobo is not usually used for OC'ing, and that it has a voltage limit, but I just want to try to see if it will be worth upgrading my mobo/cooling to get a greater OC in the future. My main problem is that the BIOS changes that I make do not seem to be taking effect. I changed my Clock Speed Ratio to 35, as well as the uncore ratio to 35 (Not sure where that should be, I have seen different people say different things.) I thought I would try it with the auto vcore first. I also turned Turbo Boost off, as well as Intel Stepping and power saving. When I save and start up the PC, I open up CPU-Z and I see it is at around 3800MHz. (I set the Ratio to just 35). Then when I start the stress testing program up, and start running it, the core speed drops to 3400MHz. This to me suggests that Turbo Boost and/or stepping is still active. TL;DR: My BIOS changes are not actually having an effect. Does anybody have any ideas? Thanks in advance

Hi guys, Im planning to build my brother a mini atx pc for gaming, mainly DOTA 2 nothing too graphically intense. I have put together this list which is around my price range, £1000, and around the specs I am looking for. Having only build full size systems in the past i'm concerned i'll order it all and it would fit! Would also appreciate ideas on the parts, have I made any poor decisions on the parts? BitFenix Prodigy - £61 - Case MSI B85I - £60 - Motherboard Intel i5-4690k - £180 - CPU Gigabyte Nvidia GTX 970 Mini - £277 - GPU Corsair CXM 600W - £57 - PSU Samsung 250GB 850 EVO - £79 - SSD WD Green 2TB - £61 - HDD Corsair Hydro H55 - £40 - Cooler Corsair Vengeance Low Profile 16GB - £90 - RAM Arctic F12 120mm Fan x2 - £8 - Fan Current Total Price - £913 So yeah, thoughts on the parts I have chosen? And can anyone see any glaring compatibility issues? Thanks for the help in advance!

Hi guys and girls (because yes, women do exist on the net!) I seen to be having some CPU issues which are holding my game enjoyment back quite a bit. After what seemed a CPU and Mobo failure, I had to step down to a i5-4430 and z87k due to budget constraints at that time, which don't seem to bad at first, but seeing as I stream for friends and play some CPU intensive games I have a feeling I'm being held back by the 4430. Fortunately I still have a functioning 990FXA lying around from my AMD days. My other hardware: MSI GTX 780Ti G.Skill Ripjaws 8GB RAM @ 1333MHz (Will be upgrading to 16@1866 ASAP) Corsair 800W Gold PSU Samsung 840 EVO 120 GB for OS+Select games Hitachi 3TB @ 7200 RPM Games I play: Battlefield 4 Dying Light Final Fantasy XIV Planet side 2 Star Citizen Far Cry 4 Assassins Creed: Unity Stuff like LoL, Hearthstone, indie games with friends. Furthermore I'm trying to stay on a budget for now. So if there's only like a slight difference in performance, I'd rather not spend too much right now. I opted for a poll to make it easier for people to cast their vote. With kind regards, TnK

I've always loved the Assassins Creed franchise and have been desperate to play the latest one, but i won't pay for a broken game. (One of the reasons i'm happy to wait for GTA5, in the hope they have spent the extra time making a decent well running game). I fully intend to play it eventually, but how is it in its current, patched form? I'm running a 4670k and a GTX 980, so poor optimization on lower end systems isn't really an issue to me, as long as i can play at highest settings at 60fps, (2x MSAA maximum as i personally think anymore than that is a waste of resources) With an Xbox Controller on my television. Any reports of game breaking bug still or just plain crashing would be appreciated. I've started to see more people saying they have it running better now so i'm im getting a bit hopeful now, plus the price of the game has been in freefall on all systems since launch, so that helps. Thanks in Advance

Hey fellow LTT forumers! Just here to share my results of delidding the 4670k. (Initially, I ran 4.5Ghz at 1.335v on my AIDA64 test, 1.335v is actually for my 4.6Ghz settings and I forgot to turn the voltage down So I went ahead and ran AIDA64 with 1.335v as well with MX-4 applied both inside and out of the IHS with the frequency set to 4.5 as well. On 4.5Ghz I will be running 1.32v, but I cant go back and test it again on 1.32 before delidding so here it is.) Here's the first result, before delidding, with MX-4 thermal paste. And the result after delidding with MX-4 inside and outside of the IHS. Just got my hands on the Noctua NT-H1 today and I've ran AIDA64 with the same settings above. Seems to be only a few degrees cooler with the NT-H1 and up to 7 degree celcius cooler on core #4. With Noctua NT-H1 Here's my actual and correct OC at 4.5Ghz with 1.32v. I'm also looking to get the CLU since there's been a lot of positive reviews using it with a delidded CPU on the die.

hi guys! At first I'd like to say that I am truly sorry if this has allready been posted on the forum. I have got an i5 4670k and I have done some overclocking but i'm not really sure about what core voltages I should aim at. i have it running at 1,2V now and a multiplier of 40. Don't want to stress it too hard since i can't afford to replace it. Now I've been looking a bit over the internet and some people get 4,2Ghz out of 1,08V and i don't know if I just have mine at an unnecessary high voltage or that i just got a a bad draw of luck... What is the average voltage a 5670k should run at with a multiplier of 40? thanks a lot Senner

Hi, I'm totally new to overclocking, been trying to use Intel Extream Tuning Utilities to import preset OC profile that matched my pc specs but one thing i find out that my core multiplier can only reach 38x while many people can reach till 44~50++, can someone help me on this? Much appreciate.

Hi guys! I'm in the process of purchasing PC parts and at the moment i have a 3570k and i'm wondering if it is worth it to return it and get a 4670k.

Hi All! Been a long time since I've posted on a forum but I'm pretty excited to be apart of this one! Exciting stuff getting into overclocking and system building and I'd love to hear some input from all of you here at linustechtips! So I've only been overclocking for a little while and done quite a bit of research into what is pretty "average" for my system to be hitting and I'd just like to know what you guys thing about what is going on within my system. Currently I'm running an i5 4670k @ 4.5Ghz cool by a 212 with dual Corsair Sp120 fans Msi GTX 760 @ +140Mhz on the Core and +200Mhz on the memory Kingston HyperX Fury 16Gb (2x8) Samsung Evo 840 250Gb SSD Antec 750W Gold+ My biggest question would have to be if I am operating withing safe temperature/voltages for the CPU as well as a decent overclock on my GPU. From what I can tell with stress testing and stability testing, is that it is. I'd really like to hear what you guys, who probably have way more experience with this than me, think of this? Attached are a few overclock tests that I was working on. The 4.6 was stable but a bit higher than I thought was necessary and the 4.8 was just for giggles and curiosity. 4.5 is the current settings.

I know, I know - Z97. But, please, read the thread and then reply. In few weeks time I'm going to buy a new PC, so I'm making sure that everything is best at the lowest price possible. I'm kind a greedy person when we're talking about money, so I want to save as much money as I can. I chose the parts by how I'm going to use them or need them to do something: Intel Core i5-4690k (because I play games only, don't need i7 for rendering or something... at least now) Gainward GTX 970 (it's the lowest price GTX 970 in Poland and it's still kinda good) ASRock Z97 Extreme3 (because I'm planning SLI in the next few years and a CPU upgrade to i7-4790k) (12GB of ADATA 2x2GB and 1x8GB GoodRAM 1333Mhz RAM, because I don't need 16GB... at least now - that's why there is a free slot on the mobo left) Intel 520 120GB SSD (cuz' why not) SAMSUNG 1TB SATA2 7200RPM HDD (from my actual PC - it stores all the games, movies and photos I have) Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO (make it cool, baby) XFX Core 750W 80+ Bronze (for the mentioned SLI) Zalman Z9+ (do I have to explain why?) 5 fans (1 on the heatsink + 3 LED + 1) So that's how it's going to (probably) be like. But I'm not sure (again) if I truly need the Z97 chipset. I don't see any pros and cons of having Z87 instead of Z97, without counting saving money. Simplyfiing it a litle bit, I don't know if the I5-4690k is going to work on Z87, because that's actually the only thing why I want to spend those 20$ more on the motherboard, and for me it's a bit much. Or if I even need the i5-4690k instead of i5-4670k. I don't know. Please, help me with this. It might be simple question with much reading, but I want to be super-duper sure about this. I just don't know if the Z87 support for Haswell-Refresh won't end, for example, tommorow. If i said something wrong, you propose to change something in the PC or just want to answer to my question - reply to this post Thanks in advance.

Ok guys, to be quick here, I would like to overclock my CPU. Because I run a lot of hardware demanding games and programs. My specs are in my profile so u guys can go there and check it out. If some of u guys have nearly precisely the specs that I have a settings profile for me to just input in the mobo would be like a huuuugggeee time saver for me.
