Hi guys, I'm planning to build my new pc and would like to ask if AMD 8-Core FX 9590 4.7 GHz Processor is compatible with MSI 990FXA GAMING Desktop Motherboard. I would also like to ask if you would recommend MSI Radeon R9 390 Gaming 8G Graphics Card or what would you recommend instead. All this is going to require a lot of power, of how much should my power supply be? Considering the processor requires 220W and for the graphics card they recommend 400W should I go for a 750W power supply or something a bit more powerful in case I add something else to the pc later? And what brand would you recommend for the power supply? Thanks very much

Note I am using DVI dual link! Hello everyone. I just updated my graphics card after I gave it to my girlfriend who is building her first build. After I hooked up my GPU I wanted to try it out to see what it could do. The first thing I check was the refresh rate before I played a game to test it. I saw that it set at 60Hz and I can't make it go higher. Everything was the same in my build now besides my graphics cards, thus I think this maybe more of a problem with some settings in the graphics card. I swapped out the cards and hooked everything back up including my Benq xl2411z with a DVI dual link to the graphics card itself (not the mobo). Things that I have tried as of now: Updated catalyst control center drivers Attempted to alter the refresh rate in the advanced display settings in the Display adapter properties Attempted the change the refresh rate in CCC, but I am having trouble finding the correct options to alter the refresh rate Does anyone have any suggestions that I can attempt to fix it? I assumed that the only thing that i changed was the GPU, so the problem is with a setting in the GPU. Thanks for you time.

vs. So in a recent post over on New builds & planning (which you can find here), I had a lot of comments suggesting I supplement in the Asus Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 Strix I'd chosen with an AMD r9 390 model. The thinking seemed to be primarily around the idea of getting more bang-for-buck with the AMD as it came with 8GB of on-board GDDR5 RAM, opposed to the 970 that comes with 4GB. The two main things that are putting me off taking this advice is that; 1) The 970 I found is almost £100 cheaper than the average price of the 390s I've come across, and 2) The driver support for the AMD GPUs still lack behind the support for big title games (such as GTA V) as far as I know. What do you guys think? Am I wrong in worrying about the support & performance of the cards? Do you have another suggestions for a better card of a similar price? Cheers all, J

Got my GPU (Sapphire RADEON R9 390 NITRO Tri-X) a couple of weeks ago and it runs pretty good! But it looks horrendous due to the fact that there's no backplate included. Is there a backplate on the market? Or can I fix it myself?

Just bought the r9 390 from Sapphire. While I could've gotten the 290x for the same price... Did I fuck myself over? Should I try to convince the store that I'm not pleased with the produkt and get my money back to buy another card?

Hello Linus Community, So I need to upgrade my graphics card, but however I know that there is HBM 2.0 coming next release schedule as well as the new Nvidia architecture. We might also see something new from AMD?! (he said sarcastically) So i need a card that will hold me over till then, or, be able to turn into a crossfire in the future if the next release timeline is shit. So I have narrowed down my two choices to the gigabyte or sapphire 390. Roughly the same card, I could care less about clock speeds (overclocking is stupid easy nowadays). I am essentially wondering which one people either prefer through experience or just brand experience. I have only been with XFX (lifetime warranty yall) this far. I trust both gigabyte and sapphire so... kinda making my choice a little bit hard. My system is: Gigabyte Z97x gaming 5 motherboard i7 4790k (AIO watercooled) 16gb g.skill sniper (cl 9 version) running at 1866 Storage space is irrelevant. All of this inside of a Phanteks Luxe. I currently have an XFX HD 7870 GHz Edition. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Should I get another R9 390 or a 980ti? (will be going to 1440p eventually, at 1080p now)

Hi everyone, I know there are a ton of threads about the 970 vs the 390 which is to be expected given that they are more direct competitors in terms of performance and price. Initially I wanted a 970 but have decided to go with a 390 instead for the VRAM. My biggest concern is the reported heat output of the 390 as I'm trying to keep my system as quiet as possible at idle and don't want my case fans or CPU fan ramping up in order to get rid of the extra heat generated. I am looking at either the MSI Twin Frozr or the Sapphire Nitro (choosing which is another internal debate). I understand that the return on investment for a 980 is not really worth it in terms of performance at this resolution but I absolutely don't see the need to go with a 980 Ti for 1080. The 980 itself is overkill. It's just that I plan to play Skyrim and Shadow of Mordor and I understand that with mods, the last 0.5 GB of slower VRAM on the 970 can sometimes be problematic. Plus who knows what the future will hold. So I'm left with the 8 GB on the 390 or the full 4 GB on a 980. Ideally I would just go with the 390 but, again, I am concerned with the heat indirectly leading to extra noise due to heat. I understand that both the Sapphire and the MSI cards will not spin their fans at idle but given the reviews online indicate that the 390s run hot, that heat has to go somewhere and it is my thought that this will lead to hotter internal case temperatures so my case (and CPU?) fans will ramp up. I'm not sure that's how it will work though. Relative cost in USD after tax and any applicable discounts: EVGA GTX 980 SC ACX 2.0 $477.50 MSI GTX 980 GAMING 4G GeForce GTX 980 $464.82 (have a credit with the vendor) ZOTAC GeForce GTX 980 AMP Edition $458.39 Sapphire Radeon NITRO R9 390 $332.33 MSI R9 390 GAMING $313.49 Thank you for any advice! Note: This is cross-posted to a couple of different sites so I'm sure some of you may have seen this, or even replied, before.

It doesn't seem like my newly built PC is using the dedicated R9 390 GPU from Sapphire... I downloaded the bloody Catalyst Control Center but it says: AMD Control Center cannot be started. There are currently no settings that can be configured using AMD Catalyst Control Center. And when I go to Screen Resolution > Advanced settings, it says: Adapter Type Microsoft Basic Display Adapter Adapter Information Chip Type: AMD ATOMBIOS DAC Type: © 1988-2010, Advanced Micro D (Wink, wink...) Adapter String: Microsoft Basic Display Adapter BIOS Information: GRENADA Total Available Graphics Memory: 256 MB Dedicated Video Memory: 0 MB System Video Memory: 0 MB Shared System Memory: 256 MB May I ask wtf is going on with my system? And how do I fix it?

Hey guys I am building a new PC and this is my my build http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/fycLNG At first I was gonna go with the best bang for the buck GPU GTX 970 but then R9 390 came out and it is more future proof so I decided to go with that.My concern is the power consumption on the 390. Usually AMD cards power consumption is higher. The question is that is my psu good enough to power my while system. Any 390 owners here? can you tell me how much the power consumption is at total at idle and load. Thanks

Hi, I just finished my build and have been doing some temperature monitoring over the last couple of days and have been noticing that my GPU temps (Nitro R9 390) are far too high at aroung 50C at idle. My current Fan config is as follows: 2x 120mm + 1 140mm Fan in front as intake One 120mm fan in the back as exhaust. For the CPU cooler I use a Deep Cool 400 with the original fan and an coolermaster jetflow in push pull configuration. Thanks Jakob

Guys I'm in the market for a GPU around the $350 price range. I was thinking about getting the GTX 970 since it's seems so popular. Specifically I was gonna get the ASUS GTX 970 STRIX, but with the release of the MSI R9 390 8GB Gaming GPU, should I get that instead. I've posted a couple threads about it and the R9 390 is supposedly a better card than the GTX 970, but the difference is minimal. Is this true? Also, how would you explain the benchmarks posted at http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Powercolor/R9_390_PCS_Plus/30.html Stock vs stock, the R9390 is faster than the 970 by 1% at 1440P but 3% slower at 1080P. Which card do you guys suggst picking up.

OK so i am building a new pc and I was leaning toward the MSI R9 390 GAMING 8G, but then i saw the MSI GTX 970 GAMING 4G and i was wondering what one I should buy and why. And the pros and cons between them. Thanks for the help! If it helps this is my current build http://pcpartpicker.com/p/yZscsY feel free to comment on this to.

So I really want a powerful card, and the R9 390 definitely wins that, but I also want the really good PhysX, which only the Nvidia card have (In my point, it would be the 970.) I really can't decide between the better R9 390 and the good PhysX on the Nvidia cards, as I really like the PhysX. So I might as well ask, how many games ACTUALLY support PhysX, and is it worthy?

So my build is a black and blue themed build, and I was wondering if it would be possible to mod the MSI R9 390 and use stove paint to paint all the red parts blue. Would I be able to do that? Just take off the covering and paint it? This is a picture of what I will mod:

I have seen a video that Linus build with the Silverstone Sugo series sg13 case. I wonder if a MSI R9 390 gaming 8G would fit in there. If it doesn't fit, I will choose the 970. Also, will a MSI GTX 970 gaming 4G and fit in this case? (It is a bit long with it's specs, may be squeeze it in the case may work)

I'm buying my new pc today!! And I've heard a lot about the 390 over the 970, so should I get the 390 or the 970 for this rig?? http://pcpartpicker.com/p/jNhCWZ

I am looking to buy a new GPU to replace my GTX 660 3GB. It's getting a bit old and games are starting to turn their noses up at it. This will not do. I need an upgrade. So I have been having a bit of an internal struggle lately. I've been looking at the AMD's 390 and 390X as well as the GTX 970 and 980. About twice a week, I make a soft decision on one card or another, then change my mind and plan on getting another card. I'm hoping you fine experts and hobbyist can help me with my indecision and get me playing "The Witcher 3" in style. What I Am Working With - My TV is a 1080p with a 60 fps refresh rate. - I have a new Corsair HX750i PSU (Love it!) - I have a humble FX 6300 that I OC'd to 4.4 Ghz (I will upgrade this next) - 16GB RAM What I Am Going Back And Forth Over - I like the R9 300 series mainly because of the extra RAM. I realize that the vast majority of games today don't need more than the 3.5GB Nvidia gives you. however, what does the future hold? Will developers start asking for more VRAM now that the AMD (and I assume Nvidia's next line) gives you more? - If i go 390(X) i'll have the VRAM to spare and keep my card relevant for the unknown future. However, my 750 watt GPU won't be able to handle 2 in crossfire. So, I'm stuck with a single card. That means i'd likely go with the R9 390X and that makes the AMD route a pricier one. - The Nvidia GTX 970 is an attractive option due to it's lower price and it's low power consumption. I can SLI 970's to keep up with the times if I need to and not trash my pretty new power supply in a year or so. From what I've been reading and watching, two 970's can keep the pace with the best cards currently out there. - Though, SLIing a 970 doesn't give me more VRAM. If games start demanding more VRAM, I'll need to replace the card in a few years. - Lately developers have taken an apathetic approach to PC hardware optimization. Will the 970 even be able to handle games in these dark times? Conclusion So, I go in circles over this. Lately I've been thinking about getting a card that will get me through the next couple years, kick the can down the road and choose between the GTX 1180 and R9 590X. By then i'll have more money to throw at this problem. So, what card do you think would be best to keep me playing games for the 1.5-2 years? Will VRAM be something i need to worry of or shut up about already? thank you for reading and your help.

Hey guys! I am from Austrian (nope, not the one with kangaroos ^.^), BUT i have followed Linus' tech tips (see what i did there? ) eversince i started building my first pc o.m.o. However... I want to purchase a new gpu because my 280x one seems to be getting too weak for 2 x 1080p monitors gaming/streaming stuff. I set my budget to a maximum of 500€ (wich is about 550 $, so + 10%). Personally I was thinking of an r9 390x (~ 450€), but because the 390 "non-x" is just about 5-10 % slower according to several benchmarks i've seen yet, but costs only 350 - 380 € - that's almost a fourth cheaper?! - should i go with one of those instead? I don't know much about the nvidia side of the force, so if there are some copatitive ones i have overseen in the reviews i have seen yet, then pls tell meh! Oh yeah, here's a list of my actual PC components: - AMD FX 8350 @ 4.6 ghz on water - Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 mobo - 16 gb ram @ 1600 mhz - Sapphire R9 280x 3gb - big-tower case - 2 monitors, one with HDMI, the other with DVI port

Hi, I am currently deciding on parts for my build and have come to a massive problem. Which 390 to choose. Right now there is three 390's on offer on jd.com: Asus DirectCU II - 390-DC2-8GD5 Dataland/PowerColor Yeston I am really not sure which one to get. The XFX one is not in stock and the sapphire card suddenly just disappeared and I must admit I have never heard of yeston before. I would be grateful for any advice. Jakob

I cant decide between the two cards, and they are priced exactly the same. The 390 has the better performance, I know that, but it has a MUCH larger power draw (SoCal $0.40 Kw/hr) and I'm concerned about the RMA service EVGA has the best hands down, and since I'm a high-school student who has little spending cash, and needs to save for a long time I want to make sure my investment is secure. I don't plan on OC'ing the 390 because I don't want to brick and void my warranty. And with the 970 the warranty covers (almost) anything, so i could overclock it. How much performance will I loose going with the 970? I've watched the Jayz Two Cents video on the MSI card (here ), and I'm just wondering how much more I could overclock the 970, and when overclocked how much of a performance gap is there?
