Im tinkering with my new computer (boght used) and i was going to OC the CPU (never done it before). I know that "K" CPU's can be overclocked. So i started doing some tests with Cinebench. My CPU's core speed was 4300MHz as you can see in the picture. I read that the max turbo frequency (stock) of the I5 2500K was 3.7 GHz, but mine turboed up to 4.3GHz. Does this mean that my cpu is already overclocked? Tnx in advance for helping me understand (I know the cable management is sloppy, but it came like this and im waiting for a new PSU)

Hello, Im wondering if I should upgrade to a ddr4 platform and if so what cpu is worth getting now days? Also Im planning on getting a gtx 1070 or rx480 or similar in the near future. I use my computer for gaming , photo editing and programming (Computer science student). For my H61 based motherboard, should I use an i5 3550 or an i5 2500k? (I can only use an h61 based motherboard because cheap mini itx lga 1155 boards are hard to come by)

Managed to get a i5 2500k for $100 and now I am looking for some motherboards to get. I am not looking to do much overclocking maybe around 4.2Ghz to 4.4Ghz if that makes a difference If I remember correctly Z68 and Z77 chipsets are the only overclocking motherboards for 1155 correct? I have a R9 270, 650w Rosewill Hive PSU and Xigmatek Gaia CPU cooler. PSU is about 2 years old now when I bought it in Jan 2014.

Hey, Im trying to build a budget hackintosh. I was wondering if the intel core i5 2500k would work with the Gigabyte Z87-HD3 motherboard. I know that they both have the same socket type but i don't know if the 2500k will work with a Z87 chipset.

Digital Foundry did a pretty cool video testing the performance of a 2500k on modern games and how it compares to the Skylake series CPUs (and a few CPUs from generations in between) They measured performance at stock speeds with 1600mhz ram. Stock with 2133mhz ram. Overclocked to 4.6ghz and 1600mhz ram Overclocked to 4.6ghz with 2133mhz ram (UPDATE) They released another video seeing it it may be worth upgrading the 2500k to a 3770k as most boards should support both and it would be a cheaper upgrade than a whole new CPU, motherboard and RAM.

So I'm giving it another go. tl;dr After two failed builds and 3 years of RMA'ing and stress, I'm trying to salvage something usable from the wreckage. The question is: Do I down/sidegrade back to some old parts I have (less costly and more sensible) or do I stick with my upgrade? If you don't want to read, just scroll down to see the two parts lists below that I have to chose between. Currently, I have an i5 2500K and an i5 4690k. I was considering, if I can get a refund for the 4690k, about going back to the 2500k and overclocking it. A lot of comparisons/reviews/threads have said that it's not a worthwhile upgrade if you overclock your 2500K (I know I should have read this at the time) and that it's worth skipping this gen if you already have one. So this leaves me with a choice between the two CPU's I have currently, the 2500k and a new Z77 board or the 4690K with a new Z97 board. The only issue there is, the Z77 boards now aren't any cheaper than Z97 and are really rare here in the UK. However I've narrowed one down that I can get from the US on Newegg that's only £100 and I've got an alternative Z97 replacement for the Asus Maximus VII Hero that I RMA'd. So I got a refund on the motherboard. As well as my Corsair H100i, which IMO was not worth the money. The rad had bubbles so it made weird clicking noises and the fans whined/whirred noticeably, and temps weren't the massive change I expected. Instead I'll go back to my old trusty Hyper 212 EVO or, even more likely, upgrade to a Noctua NH-D14. So here's my part list for the two builds. Some of which I already have (RAM, PSU, Hyper 212 EVO, 2500K and 4690K) or can sell other parts/get refunds from to pay for (Ignore the total cost, as I said have bought the above already). Also I currently have an EVGA GTX 770 SC and I would probably only get an upgrade to the 970 (in the list below) if I sell my 770 and go for the cheaper i5 2500K build. What do you all think? Which route should I go? 2500K OC'd and maximum money back, or stick with 4690K? It started with the GPU and then the motherboard and hard drives went later. I ended up going through 5 GPU's from EVGA, I spoke personally to their European Support Manager, Dominik, on a private incoming call it got that bad. In the end I went from a failed 580 to a 770 SC thanks to EVGA support. Which wouldn't be a bad deal at all if it wasn't for the nervous breakdown it caused. I ended up getting so miffed and angry that I RMA'd or sold the parts. And then from that money I built a new rig, started afresh, even called it Black Phoenix (the case was black). Unfortunately, the motherboard on this new build (an ASUS Maximus VII Hero no less!) was "faulty" (USB issues and pins on board separated from the board itself) and I've had to RMA it and am now left without a motherboard and so no working PC. On top of that my mouse has been RMA'd twice (Razer Deathadder) as the sensor went. I've spent 3 years of my life RMA'ing goods. I could and should just review companies support and RMA processes I'm that well versed in them. I still enjoy building rigs, I want to play games more and they're my only respite really from daily stresses and problems. Plus, I'll always need a PC anyway. For other stuff... you know? Currently I have 2500k and Asus P67 motherboard. I have been using this for almost 4 and half years now. I found a good enough 2nd hand deal on '4790k + Z97 Gigabyte Z97X UD5' combo (this combo costs less than new 6700K where I live). I am thinking about selling my current setup with new. Upgrade will cost me around 225$ (also 2 and half year warranty coverage on new items which seems good enough) I mostly play games. Rarely cutting and converting videos. Would this be a good upgrade? Or am I better of running with my 2500K and waiting for another generation where hopefully 6 core i7/i5 are in price range of 6700K?

Good day to you all, I have just got a lovely 980ti for my rig. I am still runnig a 2500k which is obviously getting a bit old but i don't think I could justify upgrading this yet. Even if i got an enthusiast series CPU I don't think I would get much more out of it in most games. I am wondering if anyone is in a similar position who maybe has upgraded and if you think its worth it or if I should wait till something better comes along or mine gives up. (its been running this overclock for years now) Thanks for reading,

I want to do gaming with a surround setup and have a fourth monitor at the top for steam,curse,youtube,console gaming and streams. I am eventually going to get skylake in the near future but i wanted to know if i should upgrade to skylake first or if i should go ahead with my quad monitor setup.I want to be playing the latest games on high-ultra, will this setup with my 2500k run fine? I have yet to find a monitor sub $200 that i like just yet. Any recommendations? I do believe i will eventually get a single monitor for 1440p but that will be more than half a year away. I want to build a gaming rig for my younger brother by Christmas, and am planning out what I want to go for. The only reason this is complex is because, well, I actually have a couple options lol. I have a R9 280 already lined up from a friend (who is upgrading to a 970 like me). I also plan on upgrading my case to a Obsidian 750d, and giving him my old case. Same goes for power supply, give him my 600B and upgrade to 750w semi-modular. The question is on processors. On Cragislist there is a guy parting out his rig, both an i5-2500k and MoBo for $150. I could go with that, or upgrade my own setup. 2500k to a 6600k. I could get it bundled - $350-$370 for CPU and MoBo. But according to what I've seen benchmarking, I might only see a fps increase of 10-20fps (only shown on cpu intensive games as well). I was planning someday on going sli 970s in the next bit, and upgrading cpus might kill my budget for that. Any suggestions? Amazing framerates are not the goal, but future-proofing is nice (I'd like it to last him a while). Please suggest anything, I got time to plan

I have the options of buying an i5-2500k and a i5-4690k. The 2500k is $150 The 4690k is $250 I, obviously, will be overclocking whichever one I get. I think that the 2500k is better value, but I'm interested to see what you guys think that I should do and how the 4690k justifies its $100 higher price tag.

My friend is getting a super good deal.IMO at least $400 USD for gtx 770,2500k,seasonic 620 gold psu fully modular,8gb ram,corsair 600t he will be adding ssd and hdd combo. Mobo is asus Gene. it has a antec cooler. 1.Will it have any problems overclocking 2.What should i do with the bios,if it has a multiplier do i need to update still? 3.Is it gonna have a lower clock speed as silicon lottery worsens? or it doesnt? 4.Will it affect the lifespan of the cpu Greatly? 5.What clockspeed should i put that will not bottleneck for future games?

So I bought a second hand Asus Sabertooth Z77, in good nic. My problem is when i insert my two RAM sticks into the correct DIMMS (According to the colour of the DIMM slots) my machine will start up for about 10 second without displaying any image, then it will restart and run constanly also without displaying an image, but to turn it off i need to hold the power button down for a fec seconds, just pressing it once or twice will not turn it off. But when i put the RAM sticks right next to each other (incorrect DIMMS) it will work perfectly fine, no troubles. (Would make a slight impact in peformance though) This started happening as soon as i finished the build. At the time of finishing the build, i was using crappy generic RAM (2x4GB Amicroe sticks) Even after upgrading to G.Skill Sniper F3-12800CL9D-8GBSR 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3, the problem is still there. I was running a Core i5 3570 at the time and now i am using a 2500K now and the problem is still there. I have tried re-setting the bios and all the usual things, im guessing the problem lies deeper, maybe timing or something. I also tried running it with no HDD's or USB headers or anything plugged in, still no go. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Top myself i would get a Heat sink before I overclocked. Seeing at though this is the first time I have applied thermal paste myself, and installed my Hyper 212 Evo with hardly a glance atr the directions (not completely true) - I am concerned about my temps before I overclock. Using Speccy to monitor my temps and Prime95 to stress test it overnight, 0 Errors on Speccy over 8 hours, and average temp at stress was 53-55C. This of course, was to make sure that my temps are consistent with what you would expect from a heat sink and cpu running at stock clocking. No website however, seems to want to tell me what temps I should expect if I overclock. I realize that this is subjective (That my CPU's max temp is 99C, and I shouldn't go above 80C). But what do you feel is a comfortable temp for it reach when overclocking. Also, software to overclock would be nice. It would save my the effert of researching that. But primary, before I overclock, what should I be prepared for in terms of temperatures? I plan on overclocking to 4.0ghz (for stock 3.3), maybe up to 4.2.

Would the i5 2500k (quad core I assume?) bottleneck current GPU's, like the 290, 970 or 980? I am looking at buying a computer with a 2500k and gigabyte z68 mobo, but I want to upgrade the GPU for some modern gaming and was wondering if the cpu is still up to the task or if its old enough to be obsolete, thanks.

I'm looking at a PC for sale in my area and although I don't really need another computer, I like having an extra one around. However I have no experience with the 2500k and z68 motherboard in this comp, as in, will it play games well if I upgrade the GPU, or is the 2500k old enough it might bottleneck something like an r9 290 or 970? I also don't know what the current value would be of the cpu/mobo although I have a pretty good idea of everything else. Thanks. I have I5 2500k with an Hyper 212 Evo installed last month over it. Today I got two Nactua fans (the 3000 rpm ones). While finding that my Motherboards idea of how to use the 300 rpm beast was a bit excessive (between 2800-3000 rpm constantly, I was working with SpeedFan (a program of which I similarly had problems with). Regardless, the CPU temp was reading 37, 38ish degrees, but I found out that one of these cores in just hitting ridiculous temps of 80-83. I am now confused as to how this happened, looking for help!? Maybe there thermal paste was improperly applied (It was my first time). Also, I had t overclocked to 4.2 ghz, but ran a stress test overnight and temps never reached about 70. Also also, I have a total of 6 case fans, and cpu was not under stress when temps were reached. Does anyone has any guesses on what is going on?

So.... I'm buying a R9 280x ( Suggestions welcome for better cards under 270€ ) I planned on buying a higher wattage PSU, but some say I don't need to do it, some say I should... I would rather fall in the latter group. I would like to get this community's to cents on it whoever may care. Currently I'm sporting a PSU which has lasted me for 6-7 years constant use trough multiple computers. CHIEFTEC GPS-500AB A How does age affect a PSU? Is it capable of delivering less power over time? So... should I upgrade the PSU or not? As you might see, this is a hefty upgrade to my current GPU so power draw difference could be big

I have had a 2500k since they were first released, overclocked it to 4.8GHz, there is no more I can do with it. I have the money to buy a z97 and 4790K but Broadwell is so close to coming out with Skylake coming hopefully some time this year. I want more power now though:( I might just buy a EVGA G2 850W just to scratch the itch(it's the only thing left for me to upgrade) How do you guys deal with the itch? I have noticed that after checking online my CPU was running unusually hot while idling so I checked in CPU-Z and my multiplier is either at its maximum value, overclocked to 40 or its minumum: 16. I can't remember seeing this before and am having trouble finding answers in google (all of them just explain turbo boost) so any help is much appreciated. Specs: MB - Gigabyte P67X-UD3-B3 CPU - Intel 2500k GPU - EVGA GTX 970 Superclocked AC2.0 RAM - 8GB Crucial Ballistix Elite Cooling - Corsair H100i Case - Fractal Design Define R4 And just for reference my idle temps are at about 40 degrees Celsius which seems high considering the moderate overclock and the mere 1.2 volts being applied. System Specs- 2500k @ 4ghz, Asus p8p67 LE 16GB DDR3 1600 r9 290 @ 1100/1250 750w Corsair Bronze PSU First of all my motherboard really limits me to overclocking my 2500k. The last time I tried to OC it I got it to 4.3Ghz and lasted through Prime95 for about 1.5 hours before it bluescreen. Temps were no issue but the board's VRAM may have been getting toasty which may be another reason. Though I was watching a twitch stream during the run so maybe that caused it. Anyways. Basically over time and as I updated my drivers I feel my performance has decreased. When I did a fresh install of Windows 8.1 and AMD 14.3 drivers I averaged on Battlefield 4 on Ultra with no AA or AA deferred around 105 ~ 120+ fps. I capped it at 120 because that is what I set my refresh my rate on the monitor to. The last time I updated my drivers I believe was 14.7. This driver caused a lot of stuttering and so I went back to 14.3 but it just wasn't the same. I always use Display Driver Uninstaller to uninstall old drivers. I recently updated to 14.12 and now I still have stutters and even less average frames with frames dropping all the way down to 55. That has never ever happened. I am using Mantle. A few months ago I tried to play Bad Company 2 and even when I had 100% 120fps steady it still was not smooth. It felt like 60fps and was stuttering. And here I am now playing Battlefield Hardline with stutters. I also noticed that my GPU usage is never stable, that shit is literally all over the place. Here is an example of what it looks like, except worse. What could be happening? Could my CPU be holding me back? I plan on getting a 390x when it comes out but I don't want to be limited by my CPU if that is the case. I am really trying to wait till Skylake comes out to upgrade my CPU and motherboard.
