OK, not all of it. Some new features are improvements on old things. Some are features Android already has. "Put your phones together and send things like contacts to each other." Hmm you mean like NFC that has been first able to do this on Android (and Windows phone back thn) since 2010? Otherwise, the standby screen basically for when your phone is docked seems alright. Allowing good tracking to let someone know you got home safe is nice. Idk, it's features that have mostly been around, just tweeked, updated, or finally brought to Iphone. Some stuff Android has had.

I have upgraded my budget to $2300 CAD, I whittled down a list of laptops I like, but I have no idea if they're any good compared to what's out there. Any suggestions or feedback would be much appreciated. EDIT: Preferably 17" because this will probably be a desktop replacement until next gen comes out again. I will be using this for university in the fall for computer programming/rendering and gaming as well. https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B08TTD87PK/ https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/15264483 https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/15464219 https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/14931584

Large display laptop for terrible eyesight
steinarey posted a topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
Hi everyone! Due to poor eyesight I've always had to have the larger 17" display on my laptops (the day fold-able 24" OLED becomes a thing on laptops will be a great day). That has been fine by me since those computers are often powerhouses so I can game and more on them. However, I'm going for my postgrad in computer science (AI and ML) in September and need to upgrade my laptop and this times I need a change. I'll probably be moving around a bit and not always with a convenient plug nearby. The laptops I've usually had have the battery life of a horror movie flashlight and the weight of Mjölnir. So my question to you guys is this: Which laptop offers the best balance between power, battery life and weight? The LG Gram 17 has caught my eyes and might be *the one* but there might be something better that I'm not aware of. It even has a thunderbolt connection so I could connect an external GPU if needed. Requirements/non-requirements: Budget: Max $2500ish Needs: 17" display, backlit keyboard Doesn't need: Dedicated graphics card (I'll have access to those at the Uni. for my ML work and I'll probably don't have much time for gaming :/ ) Any suggestions would be helpful, thanks! -
I'm in the market for a new gaming laptop. I'd like to stick around 17" display, and if I can swing it, a 2080. I'd like to keep it under $2k USD. I don't care about weight, bulk, portability etc. I'm never far from an outlet so battery doesn't matter to me. I recently posted asking about a Lenovo legion, and realized maybe I should've just asked about general recommendations instead.

Hi guys, I currently have an ASUS ROG g751jm ---> https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834232383 and I'm shopping around for a 17" laptop in the $2k price range. Little back story. I used to love my HP DV6 then DV7 (if I recall correct) but I always had a hinge break and eventually the screen would go. The day before my last deployment, the hinge went on my DV7 and I needed something in a hurry, so I went down to my local best buy. Had literally no idea what I wanted, didn't do any research, and pretty much just grabbed the "best" thing they had considering I was leaving the next day for the better part of a year. I've actually really enjoyed this machine, and it's held up well considering I purchased it early 2015 and it's survived both being tossed around in a back pack, and I lug it back and forth to work daily. Through my work we sometimes get some decent deals on select brands, so I've mostly been looking at Omen, Dell, and Acer (only 3 brands listed on our benefits page), but I'm curious what everyone else suggests. This laptop was by far the most expensive I've purchased at around $1,500, but it's also held up about 4 years. I don't mind paying a little more if it means better longevity. Considering before this I was getting about 2 years out of my laptops.. granted, I wasn't as careful with my things in my younger years.. ? I've also considered something lighter with an external gpu, but up until this year I really hardly knew anything about the PC world so I'm not sure if that's even reasonable, or if that would become an annoyance with how frequently I'm playing games on it. What's everyone's thoughts?

Hey, I'm a big fan of the Omen X 17 laptop that came out last year. It's got all the specs I want along with a great bang for your buck. The only thing is, it still has 7th gen processors. For the length of time I'm planning on using this laptop, I need the extra CPU power. I can use and eGPU and upgrade ram and storage, but not so much a CPU. Does anyone have any idea when or if HP is going to release a refresh. I thought it would be release at Gamescom like the original Omen X was but they released the Obelisk so... Thanks in advance

Hello interwebs, Listen a Friend bought a "dead" Alienware M17X R3 for 100$ Core i7 2620QM 16gb DDR3 (4x4) 128gb ssd 500gb hdd, GTX 460M 1.5gb , that the seller stated that it was dead as it didnt want to power on and all it did was Beep 5 times, well, he bought it and send it to me, after googling a while i found out that those beeps were related to a dead CMOS Battery wich was changed and the laptop booted no problem 5 months after, my Friend bought a GTX 770m (wich is indeed supported and sold as an upgrade kit on official stores like Eurocom) but right before the card arrived the laptop began with thoose 5 beeps again, we tried the new card and its the same did ALL the mandatory trouble shooting ETC, even tried brand new CR20 batteries, but still the computer does those 5 Beeps, OR, just Boots into the bios with no image at all not even to an external monitor (and it does with both gpus and igpu) so.. we also tried a different cpu ram hdds etc, any insight?

I got an Alienware 17" R3 when it came out. I bought the non-SSD one but I had no idea it would be this slow? Or is something wrong with it? I'm not sure what is up with my laptop I talked to Dell countless times and all they say is that its this slow because it has no SSD in it. I don't think that is the case. my warranty is over and I still have no idea what is wrong with it. The games are so slow, frame rate drops so low, Google chrome takes up to 2 minutes just to open... I hope someone can help me with this issue.

Hello Guys, i'm in charge of searching for a new laptop for my mum and until now I haven't found anything that suits perfectly. To make it short: -The laptop never leaves the living room so no weight limitation (a charger is also always near) -Most usecases are; light excel work, e-mail and web surfing/streaming My suggestion would be something like this: Display: 17" FHD or better Processor: i3 or i5 (equal amd is fine) Storage: SSD only with about 500gb (4 year old laptop has used about 320gb) Dedicated graphic card is not necessary Price up to 700€ = 860$ All the laptops i found started at 1000€ so I hope for a few suggestions from you Thanks in advance Felix

I currently game on i7-4790k 16gb memory 1kw corsair PSU Asus GTX1080 ti I have a 1440p 144hz monitor that I like to see at 144hz as much as possible. ----------------------------------------------------- I am looking into upgrading to a threadripper and need some clarification. 1st, how is the gaming performance in cpu intensive games like rainbow six siege (my i7 runs at 90% on this game) 2nd, Are the issues with games that common? 3rd, Will the cpu bottle neck most games under 144hz? ----------------------------------------------------- I understand threadripper is overkill. I'm not asking for your opinions, I want solid facts/benchmarks. Money isn't an issue, but I can't value buying an i9 or multiple 1080tis. I don't want to just throw away tons of money to have hardware to brag about. I am buying this because I would really love to get back into live-streaming and I don't have a wonderful internet connection to do that. Encoding on slower presets are critical for me to maximize the little bandwidth I have. I will be using this new CPU for gaming, streaming, video editing, unreal engine, blender, server hosting, and a wide array of other things. But I want to prioritize the best streaming performance I can. I do know about the new elgato capture card, but I tried to HD60 and it's really finicky to make work, and requires HDMI sound, which I don't have. I just don't see capture cards being a good solution for me personally.

Hello everyone, So, i have a laptop hp zbook 17" first generation that is around 2 and a half years old by now and i recently installed windows 10. specifications: processor: 4 th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-4700MQ (2.4 GHz, 1600MHz, 6 MB L3 cache, 4 cores, 47W) (no vPro support)* Up to 3.40 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost Technology graphics: NVIDIA Quadro K3100M with 4 GB dedicated GDDR5 video memory Microsoft DirectX 11.1 (Shader Model 5.0) and OpenGL 4.2 capable RAM: 8GB Memory: 1TB of hdd. BIOS version: L70 Ver. 01.36 (last update. 26 sep 2016 / unable to update) The first problem started when i was playing a game and i saw some screen tears , so i updated the GPU driver and it seems to has fixed it as apparently windows 10 didn't even installed any driver after updates. Secondly after i turned my laptop off and tried to turn it on again the next day it gave the notification that my pc needed to be repaired and it did it on it's own. But these would fail, so it turned into an endless loop of trying to repair, failing at repairing and restarting. Third time the option that i thought there was, was installing windows 10 again from the UEFI, this seemed to have worked, I installed all drivers and updates and restarted my laptop. Till that point all seemed fine. Then i thought it was fine, turning my laptop on and using it for a while ,installing few games to test it out. Fourth problem came up the next day again when i tried to turn my pc on and had the exact same problem with the endless repair loop, this time i was able to enter the troubleshoot menu. where is shown the options of resetting , which all 3 don't work, if I were to chose one it would always say: "Unable to reset this PC". So later factory reset did work suddenly where I hoped it would go back to windows 8 and be fine. This didn't happen. while resetting pc to factory settings it stopped working at 39 % and crashed. this point I tried to install windows 10 through the UEFI again, and magically worked. FIFTH PROBLEM Next day I turned my laptop on again and getting now the screen of "recovery failing" with option 1 "Press Enter to try again" = when pressing this, nothing happens. option 2 "Press F8 for start=up Settings" = when pressing this, nothing happens. option 3 "Pres esc for UEFI Firmware settings" / when pressing this i do get the UEFI option menu. In there I tried to do all the system test and the test that loops until error, which always said everything passed. when I try to reset the PC it says: "unable to reset this PC". It also says that its missing a partition , and error code . 0xc000000f Right now It's doing a loop of turning on giving this error code and turning of. Please help me, I hope i didn't made it worse by trying some things on my own. All help is much appreciated.

So I have been reading posts in the sub forum for the past few hours. I am looking for a laptop for gaming. I do not play any AAA titles, honestly most of the use will be for MMO's such as World of Warcraft, Diablo 3, Final Fantasy ect. RPG's are my thing. Skyrim I guess would be the hardest on the computer. I don't have many specifics that I am hard set on. 17" screen a must, prefer newer intel chipset. I would like a SSD,,, and that's about it. After reading a bunch on hear I am not any closer to a decision then I was 3 hours ago... Marbe worse. I kinda like Clevo's but I don't know much about them and people either love or hate them. I like MSI's but again no clear cut goods or bads. Im priced out max at 1250 give or take, 1300 wouldn't be a deal breaker.

Day 17: I am still without a working PC. MSI has yet to even unload my mobo off their RMA truck and scan it in despite receiving it 4 days ago. I hope that if and when it comes I will not run into the same problems I encountered before. One of my USB 3.0 header's pins were bent so I sucked up to MSI in a letter included with my shipment. I have been stuck on a 2014 Macbook Air provided by my school. I have already exhausted time-wasting options like watching all four seasons of House of Cards and have been continuously refreshing Newegg for the EVGA GTX 1080 FTW. I have not eaten any FPS since the day my beloved was taken away from me. I worry that when I return my membership to the PC Master Race will be honored. Send help. Sincerely, bill

Hi everyone, I am having real problems procuring laptops specifically non gaming 17" intel i5 specs. I am buying in the UK, and I need the website to be able to provide me with quotes. Scan.co.uk is one place that can do this for me although their selection of laptops with the above specs is almost non existent. Can anyone direct me to a website that has a decent selection of laptops matching 17" and i5, and also provide quotes? I'm doing this for a local charity so that they can get grant funding for new equipment. Many thanks in advance for any advice! philjo

Hey, I need a backpack for uni and general purpose travelling that fits a predator 17", which is pretty damn large.. I bought a wenger 17" pegasus, but it was too small to close the laptop compartment So I returned it and got a wenger IBEX 17", which is slightly larger, but due to its tapered off top end it's really difficult to close the latch and the corners of the laptop will probably get worn out (also the fact that my k70 is too long to fit in the second compartment. Soooo I need something bigger Any recommendations? Or should I just go with the acer proprietary one (even though I'm really not a fan of the GIANT predator logo on the back... I tried posting in mobile devices, but 0 replies. Also searched the forum, couldn't find anything from the first few posts. I live in the UK. Thanks.

Hi Just about to start my first build, I haven't bought any parts yet but the case I have chosen supports a 120mm radiator. My build: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/bW9Dt6 My question is, Is a 120mm radiator big enough to cool the 4790k? Its clocks at 4.0 so I'm not looking to overclock it, I haven't done much overclocking and I don't see the point right now at the cpu will be quite a step up. I like the look of these coolmaster neptune 120xl https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/cooler-master-cpu-cooler-rln12x24pkr1 silverstone T03 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Silverstone-Tundra-Water-Cooler-2x120mm/dp/B00DH9DUDA Done anyone have any experience with these at all? I think I am leaning towards the coolmaster at the moment. Cheers Andy

Hi, I'm looking for a laptop of 17, and I'm looking at alternatives, my main use will be as software development, big data and financial systems (such as Calypso tools they need to start 4-6 ram ) and usually work in virtualized environments (max 3 normally 2 simultaneously (99%)). The truth is that I'm going crazy for two models and don't not what to choose. the first one is the thinkpad p70 with XEON 1505M and 16 GB of RAM in 8 * 2 (16gb is the least I would need ) or new models Dell Precision 17 7000 both with same configuration. But now, I don't know how much it would be an advantage or not the difference in price between the Xeon E3 1505M processor with ECC memory and i7 6700HQ or 6820HQ without ECC for my usage. Moreover, if the ECC XEON not really offer me any significant advantage and opt for the i7 6gth what differences would have to Alienware 17 or Asus rog 17 g752vt 6gth i7 both with and DDR4 memory expandable up to 64GB, but with a price much lower compared to the workstation. I don't use graphic, and don't play games, I only work with the laptop connected to 2 monitor + laptop screen. What recommend me? What are the difference between Dell precision and thinkpad (same specification), or between MSI, CLEVO or any other... Sorry for my english, I'm from Spain...

So after several years of being out of stock, the unique maingear Pulse 17 is back with many improvements. The Pulse 17 is one of the slimmest 17" gaming laptops on the market at 0.75" thick, competing against the MSI GS70 (0.86" thick) and Razer Blade Pro (0.88" thick). With prices starting at $2200 it is nearly identical to the equivalent spec GS70, while nearly $1k cheaper than the blade pro. For those $2.2k bucks you get a GTX970m 3GB vram, i7 6700HQ (yes that's a 4 core 8 thread i7), 16GB ram (upgradeable to 32), and a 256GB Samsung 950 pro NvME SSD (upgradeable to 512GB) With a custom automotive paint job, webcam, subwoofer, 1080p IPS display, and other features this is one of the best valued (and best looking!) slim gaming laptops. The battery life is rated at 5 hours of regular office use. browsing the internet, documents, etc... which is not outstanding, but definitely enough considering this laptop is one of the thinnest 17" notebooks in the world. Personally I am very excited that it is back, and will definitely be on my list of considerations for when I upgrade from my XPS13.
