So I just downloaded the evaluation copy of WIndows 10 and I love it! I just thought I'd let anyone know who's deciding weather or not to try it that it's really good. The user interface is so good, and it's not annoying to use like WIndows 8.1 was. I was also still able to update my graphics driver despite the new OS, and I'm pretty sure other programs will work for it too. I just selected Windows 7 64 bit for the options. Overall Windows 10 is great! You have the start menu back and you can select the apps you want to appear beside it. All of your music can be played using the Windows Xbox music app which is actually quite cool to use. The whole OS appears really clean and works well despite it being an early copy. I got to keep all my files and the installation went perfectly. If anybody has any questions feel free to ask!

I was planning on trying windows 10 (32 bit) on a WM, the WM I wanted to use is Oracle VirtualBox, the Issue I am having is the whenever I try to launch the WM even to just to try and get to installing an OS it will open the WM window, and a second window that says "Initializing processes for Virtual Machine 1/2" This however never gets above 0%, also the WM window doesn't respond to any input, I have to close it through task manager. Additional Information: Host OS Windows 7 hope premium SP1 Host computer (in sig) Allocated virtual disk size = 20GB WM motherboard settings. Acceleration settings If you think more info is required just ask. I just want to know if I need to change some settings for it to work, for some reason the Wm is behaving completely differently as opposed to the inferior PC is used at school. I am trying to get the WM to work of my D drive (C has no space for it) Could this cause an issue? Or do I just have the wrong chip-set selected.

This may not be the best place to ask this, one of the only forums I have an account on, but I believe it's relevant. I have had Sony Vegas 10 for several years now, 3-4, and used it 9-10 over those years. I just recently started a let'splay/gaming channel on YouTube and I've been using Sony Vegas 10 to edit and render my videos to .mp4. I have made 35-40 videos over the past several weeks and have had no problems. Until all of a sudden, every time I render to .mp4, it gives me the "unexpected error occurred" pop up. It only does this when rendering to .mp4, nothing else. I have a couple hundred gigs left on my hard drive, so I know that's not it. Since I'm using Sony Vegas 10, there is no render with GPU option, so it is not that. It normally runs into this problem somewhere between 75%-99% render completion, not at 1%. My videos normally take 1-2 hours to render, so it's insanely frustrating to re render it, and again it fails. I have changed absolutely nothing, no settings have changed, did not even change my project or render settings. I have also cleared the cache which did nothing, I've uninstalled it and deleted all files associated with it, nothing. Opening another window and copying the tracks over does not work. If I render to .wmv and try to re render that video to .mp4 it still fails. This has come out of no where and I have no clue what to do. I am asking here becuase researching the problem has not helped. I have no clue what to do.

Okay, this is my first review, and I will be doing it for Windows 10... When the WAN show archive went up yesterday I wanted to become a Insider. So I did, and here are my first experiences. The thread will be updated if I didn't cover something and will be updated for some older game benchmarks. So, lets tune in, shall we? THE INSTALLATION The Installation via USB was hard enough... Now you wont see the (Press any Key) message pop up... A normal Windows 8 logo will pop up or your manufacturers logo, depends... Don't take your USB out! You will know if it's booting into the installation because it will take longer than normal boot in your current OS! (If you have already installed version of Windows 8) The installation starts and you do the same steps as in 8 or 8.1, but weirdly it doesn't ask for the code they provided you... if you're on USB and it does a first reboot reboot, let it reboot, go into BIOS and change the boot order back from USB to HDD, or you will just loop the installation which can corrupt your boot loader. This time there will be a black screen for a longer time, and a Windows 8 logo for a longer time... When it boots it will setup things and then you need to type in your email, and this time you can't bypass this (I couldn't) This makes sense, when you go into Hotmail you need to provide them another email address from now to use it (for backup purposes) and they even ask you a mail you provided in the Hotmail for activation purposes.... Activation goes like this! 1. Email here 2. Password here Click next 3. Secondary email you provided in Hotmail while becoming a insider Click next 4. Code they will give you on your secondary email PUT HERE! Click next It should activate everything now, and you're ready to go... It automatically installs a generic NVidia or AMD driver in your system FILES, FOLDERS AND NEW UI! When you boot up after installation, you will be presented with the same desktop as on windows 8... But, HOLY CRAP, THERE ACTUALLY IS A START MENU which reminds more of XP! I won't provide any pictures, if you wanna see you gotta do it for yourself If you already had Windows 8, even if you don't click upgrade in installation (because you want to dual boot just like I did), they will give you the same wallpaper you got on Windows 8, on your desktop... Also the Metro interface still exists, but you need to enable it... To do so: Right Click on taskbar -> Properties -> Start Menu tab -> Uncheck first option... There you go... There is also a search icon, it just does quick searches on bing, when you first use it the message will pop up: "Why didn't you use the Start Menu?" Which made me laugh as hell Third Icon on taskbar manages your opened windows, and HOLY CRAP! WHOLE DESKTOPS... Yes, you can add those... When you add them it just duplicates the first one you have, but you can customize the second one, and leave the first one alone! On your taskbar will also be pinned: Internet Explorer, File explorer that was renamed to "home", Store app and nothing else Everything else is pretty minimalistic... And did I say that the Metro apps (now intergraded in the start menu) don't have to be full screen? You get everything you got with 8.1, but it also suggest what you should install based upon your last OS, which is nice! Also there are animations which are actually cool looking (slight and smooth gliding when opening windows), so you won't need to turn them off! Also the Window borders are thinner which you can notice from my other photos DRIVERS, HARDWARE DETECTION All the hardware is properly detected, drivers for them are preinstalled, but the newer ones seem to be working fine... SPEED In daily use I noticed that it is a bit faster than normal, but, I will also have to do some light gaming on this (pretty weak laptop) INTERNET EXPLORER It is very fast, and sturdy, good for watching videos, playing flash games, but the software from this forum doesn't cope well with it... In fact I'm using it right now and you cant Quote, change the size and color, but everything else tends to be fine! DUAL BOOTING Dual booting is nice and in fact you can dual boot 8, 8.1 and 10 no problem, but it uses either 7 or 8 boot loader... (7 uses ASCII and 8 uses actual GUI) Even tho there is one weird thing, it says (recovered) next to the name of the older OS... EDIT: Dual boot menu doesn't always appear and can't find a possible solution for the problem... So multiple restarts required for 8 or Techinal Preview boot... GAMING This section is coming soon... Okay, had some time with the new Windows, and gotta say, the gaming performance is pretty good... And another thing i noticed is that heat output of the laptop is so much less defined... I currently tested on games like: CoD4 and Burnout: Paradise City. We all know that the new games will run well on the New Windows, but the older games are always the problem... The FPS was better... Before Windows 10 I had 10-30 FPS but now I have from 30-60 with drops to 15 when multiple cars are crashing and such... CoD4 was never hard to run... Mod on custom mods like Zombies and Deathrun with custom or not custom map I always keep above 30 FPS, but most of the times I get 250 lock if playing Deathrun servers... Next games to test: GTA: SA MW3 or COD2 TF2 NFS WORLD... For now, my grade would be 8/10, speedy, sleek, nice... But it all comes down to gaming, or it will be the same thing as the old pal windows 8, except with start menu BUGS AND GLITCHES The new Windows has some bugs! It will sometimes freeze, and the Explorer will sometimes glitch, requering a whole restart of computer or ending the bugged process, things sometimes don't open, but it almost never crashed, which is nice since it's only in Beta! Windows will automatically provide you with questions for feedback which you can answer on the fly... If you are experiencing a glitch just report it to Microsoft, still this is a very nice OS!

So I am running windows 10 and I keep getting this error when I try to install google chrome. According to an artice from pcworld.com (link=http://www.pcworld.com/article/2690724/why-windows-10-isnt-named-9-windows-95-legacy-code.html) by Ian Paul Microsoft skipped Windows 9 due to compatability issues in legacy code "To save time, some third-party Windows desktop developers used a shorthand to check the version name (not number) of Windows they were installing their app to. Instead of coding apps to check for Windows 95 or Windows 98, developers coded instructions to check for "Windows 9."as Ian Paul said. "That made sense since there were only two versions of Windows that had a nine in their name to that point. It was simply an easier way to figure out which version of Windows the program was dealing with" A java code example (full code link here https://issues.jenkins-ci.org/secure/attachment/18777/PlatformDetailsTask.java also mentioned in the article) "class PlatformDetailsTask implements Callable<HashSet<String>, Exception> { /** Performs computation and returns the result, or throws some exception. */ public HashSet<String> call() throws Exception { final String arch = System.getProperty("os.arch"); String name = System.getProperty("os.name").toLowerCase(); String version = System.getProperty("os.version"); if (name.equals("solaris") || name.equals("SunOS")) { name = "solaris"; } else if (name.startsWith("windows")) { name = "windows"; if (name.startsWith("windows 9")) { if (version.startsWith("4.0")) { version = "95"; } else if (version.startsWith("4.9")) { version = "me"; } else { assert version.startsWith("4.1"); version = "98"; }" (more code https://searchcode.com/?q=if%28version%2Cstartswith%28%22windows+9%22%29) "Microsoft may have looked out at the vast catalog of legacy code and decided the easiest way to avoid an annoying rewrite for all those programs was just to skip Windows 9 and head straight for Windows 10. Accommodating legacy code may sound ridiculous, but it's certainly a plausible explanation and, if true, it's a smart move by Microsoft to not upset its developer base or potentially mess with customers happily using legacy software. Trying to create a buisness file server with RAID 10
MegaMasher825 posted a topic in Troubleshooting
So i am planning on creating an office file server for multiple windows computers to share, i know NOTHING about Linux. The Server would most likely be wired via CAT6 Ethernet cabling to the other computers. This will be purely a server and is not ment to be use as an actual computer. My plan is to put it into a RAID 10 with 4 2TB hardrives but i am running into trouble since ive never done anything like this before. I checked out Ubuntu but once again, i know nothing about Linux. I also didnt see anything online suggesting you can use RAID 1,0 in Ubuntu Server. Even if it was possible, i know nothing about Linux. Im a windows guy through and through. Any help or tutroials you could lead me to? I actually checked out a tutorial on how to set up an Ubuntu server and i understood it but idk how to make a RAID 1,0 out of that. -
Short Introduction This is a short overview over the EVGA 750 G2 since i couldn't find anything about it when i bought my new psu. I got this powersupply after RMAing my NEX650G, also from EVGA. I am currently using my old CX500M. Also, don't tell me that 750 watts is to much wattage, but this unit is not available in lower wattages. Don't expect any professionalism! I am taking pictures with my D5100 with an Sigma DC 18-125 1:3.8-5.6 HSM. I apologize for my bad english skills, I am not an native english speaker. Packaging & accessories In the box there is included: - the powersupply packed in nice soft foam. - a bag the psu is in. - an manual which i actually really like! nice illustrations and step by step installation guide.- all the modular cables which use different types of twist types which i find weird. on the NEX650G they were held together with velcro strips with an evga logo which i liked more. - a molex to floppy connector. - a bag for all the unused cables. - a power cord. its a power cord. its 1.5 meters long. - some delicious silica gel. - a 24 pin jumper. this is quite handy in my opinion, no more paperclips! - four black screws. in the manual q&a they answer the question why there are more than four screw holes but only four screw holes but there are actully only four screw holes which is a little bit funny. - four cable management velcro strips. The powersupply I really like the overall look of this powersupply. The finish is very textured and looks great. They rounded the edges and removed the handles from the last generation. They also improved the fan grill which was screwed on the last time which would have probably made it easier to replace the fan but it did look worse. I am also not sure how much airflow this design allows and how much air turbulence it will create. The modular interface is pretty self-explainatory, looks great and it very functional. I think it uses pretty standard plugs, that means that you could probably buy normal vga connectors, remove the clip and make you own cables from scratch this way. Also the zero fan mode is great too see, also the switch is pretty handy, but this needs to be tested in the next few days. The cables The main reason why i got my 650G was the cables. So is it for my 750G2. All the cables are black, including the connectors. On the 650G the vga cables were red, I liked it but i think not everybody does so i think this is the better solution. But the cables are not flat, they are sleeved with pretty high-quality sleeving. The heatshrink and the cable ties used below it are not really optimal, but it keeps down cost and doesn't look too bad. The advantage of these cables are that they are easier too cable-manage imo and if you want to you can sleeve them yourself later on. Mini-Conclusion This is kind of a mixture between the 650G, the 1300G2 the 1500 Classified and all the other psu's in EVGAs line-up. I think for around 100€ this i a psu, i would recommend. It is not perfect, but if you need the features it offers it is the psu for you! If you have any questions on it, ask me i will try to answer them as good as i can! And: Dear Linus Sebastian, Please review this unit. I would like to know your opinion on this. @LinusTech

Hello Guys, I've been having problems with my phone not entering deep sleep and when it doesn't sleep it stays awake and uses a lot of battery. I installed Wakelock Detector to find a probable cause, but only this seem suspicious to me: If you know anyone that has had experience with this or a different forum that has had experience please link them to this post.

I need some safe storage for my music and movies and thought RAID 10 woud be useful since it is safe and somewhat faster than a single HDD. So I wanted to hear your thoughts on the Western Digital Red Drives because they seem to fit my build which should be silent oriented. My OS and games/programs will stay on my SSD. (Also first topic, feel free to give some tips for my next one )

Currently looking for a 6 to 10 channel fan controller that can fit in the 3 available 5.25 inch bays on the 750D. (Non bay controllers are okay as well. I have searched online for fan controllers but i'd rather have a community suggestion on what would work best (get images if possible please) Real reason is because i always prefer to have manual control over the fans. Corsair Link is horrible and so is the 'EasyTune' 6 Gigabyte software. EDIT 23:43 GMT 01/07/2014: Bought a FC5v3, love the display on it and should have ample power for all fans.

I searched (or at least tried) and didn't find this. The question is about form factor of tablets. What do you prefer? 7"-8" or 9"-10"? I personally prefer 9"-10" because the difference between that and a phone is much bigger and (for me) it holds "more better". Discuss.

So i've been planning my computer build and i've planned to have a raid 10 array of hard drives to act as a storage array. I'll have a seperate SSD where my OS will be installed and applications. Having said that, my games will be installed on the SSD so i'll be recording to the raid array since recording to the SSD would just kill it. My main concern is whether or not the raid array will be able to keep up with the recording... I intend to record at 1080p @ 30fps at most. From what i've seen around the web that will mean i'll need around ~180MB/s write speed, though i'm not too sure though. The drives i've initially been planning on using are the WD 3TB red drives. But for fraps i think i'd need the WD Black drives for a better chance of keeping up with recording. Even so, would having 4x 2TB WD black drives in raid 10 be fast enough for recording with fraps in 1080p at 30fps without any frame drops or general issues? On an unrelated note, would it be a better idea to get an external capture card like the Live Gamer portable (i don't want to use an internal one) and use that to record gameplay?

So I log into the forums and I click the donate button. I add a credit card to PayPal and I donate $10. I even have the receipt showing I donated $10 to Linus Media Group. Did I do something wrong because it has been about a week since I donated and I don't have the First Blood Bronze Badge. Thanks

I was wondering how much faster the latency is on ram between CAS 9 and CAS 10. Will it make a difference in gaming?

Hi guys, Let me preface this with the server specs: AMD Opteron 6212 Interlagos 2.6GHz 8-core CPU SUPERMICRO MBD-H8SGL-F-O ATX Server Motherboard Wintec Server Series 64GB (4 x 16GB) ECC Registered DDR3 1600 Four 4TB Western Digital RE 7200RPM Hard Drives in (what I assume to be) RAID 10 Kingston HyperX 3K 120GB SSD for L2ARC/ZIL (NOT INSTALLED YET) Two Supermicro AOC-USAS2-L8E 8-Port SAS 6Gb/s Internal Raid Adapters (two 4TB drives attached to each) So, imo, this thing should be pretty darn fast in terms of read/write speeds. Relative to normal storage systems. Here's the thing, I'm getting 20-25MB/s copying from the RAID 10 to the same RAID 10 (moving files from one volume to another on the RAID). I don't understand why it's so slow. I feel I would get faster speeds on a single drive by itself. I know it's in RAID 1, but RAID 0 should help that. Note the "what I assume to be" RAID 10. The GUI isn't clear how it goes with setting up RAID volumes. It was a 2x2 square, so I assume each column represents a mirror and each period represents a stripe. I mean what else could it be? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Vitalius P.S. I noted the 120GB SSD for the L2ARC and ZIL because I'm not sure how it will affect performance. Hopefully a lot.

http://www.humblebundle.com/ The newest Humble Bundle has arrived, this time it brings to us To the Moon, Joe Danger 2: The Movie, Papo & Yo, and Runner 2. $1 or more will get you Steam keys, but if you pay more than the average you will also get Reus and Surgeon Simulator 2013. If you pay more than the average you will also get the games that will come to the bundle later. All games are cross-platform (Windows, Linux, OS X), include soundtracks, and they are also DRM-free, assuming you use the direct downloads instead of using the Steam keys. This looks like another good bundle; I already own Surgeon Simulator 2013 and Runner 2 which are both great games. I had already planned to play Reus at some point so I will be picking up this bundle and I'll get to try out the other games that come with it as well. http://www.humblebundle.com/

Hey guys, as the title says I'm searching for a rather cheap tablet running Windows 8. I don't want to spend more than 250€(~$340) and it should not be the Surface RT. I want to use it for my stuff at university and watching video (HD - 720p) on it. I already have a netbook but the battery dies quite fast and it's integrated graphics can't handle >480p. Since I also got a Android 4.0 smartphone (Panasonic Eluga - 4.3") I figured that another Android device won't be as effective as a Windows based one. I'd really like to be able to use some of my programs on a tablet and so I decided on Windows 8. But I can't really find anything that isn't reviewed as junk like the Acer Iconia W3-810. Any suggestions? If it should turn out that I'm better off with another Android one, then I have the Nexus 7 in mind but I'd prefer Win8. Thanks in advance! Kind regards, Trek
