Prime95 is just absolute trash. Rather use Intel XTU, Aida64 or similar for stability testing. Somehow Prime95 really fucks around with some automatic overclocking/stability tools and mechanisms in some manufacturers BIOSes, once you overclock your chip. I found that to be especially true with Gigabyte and Asus mainboards. I had an incident in which my overclocked 4770k suddenly started pulling way too much voltage and running scorching hot, but only when I ran Prime95 for testing. All other programs I used behaved just fine.

Asscreed Unity is a shit game nobody should be playing or at the very least nobody should be using as a frame of reference.

BF1 is the only game that truly takes very noticeable advantage of an i7 and beyond. It helps some other games at 1080p high refresh gaming.

But future proofing? That's just not a good argument nobody knows when are more multithreaded games going to become the norm. You keep just encouraging people to spend more money than they have to and then constantly move the goal posts: Oh wait for DX12...no not the first DX12 games wait some more....no probably not those either keep waiting and waiting and waiting....

No just get an i5 it's perfectly fine for 1080p 60 FPS and higher resolutions that bottleneck the GPU.

True, but with AC Unity you picked a especially bad optimized example, like you said. I think if the developers got their shit together allready and started optimizing their games a bit better we wouldn't have to buy new hardware every other year...

Silver47 reacted to Princess Luna in Is the i5 still enough for gaming nowadays? (1080p)
It mostly certainly is, and Intel is to blame some for that, they have numerous offerings that are pointless, the g4600 g4620, i3 7300 i3 7320 i3 7350k... all these Kaby Lake processors offer little difference in performance for extra costing and they really do no good, all it is more options to mess up with the buyers choice.

The 1600x is a very good pick for the money if you need multi-tasking and multi-threading, and it will still be able to game, I would honestly pick it over the i5 however I still hold to my suggestion that locked i7's are probably the general best picks.

Hopefully we're not far from the day the flagship i7 becomes 6c/12t and when that day comes then we'll know what is the absolute best for the money hehehe

    cheers!

Okay now you're pushing a bit too far, go render a 4k video on a 1800x and on a 7700k and see who finished first, we gota remember the Ryzen was born for workstation purpose... but for gaming? then yes a purely gaming rig, even if you want to stream the 7700k (using quicksync) is by all means superior [:

Sorry, you are right. Since the thread is about gaming I meant gaming performance ofc. In multithreaded apps the 1800x would of course kick a 7700k's butt.

Silver47 got a reaction from SSL in Is the Logitech Z150 a good first speaker?
I suggest they are not. Otherwise they wouldn't cost only about 20$. Compared to other 2.0 Speakers in that particular price range they should be ok, but overall these inexpensive types of speakers are far from decent...
If you can spend another ~5$ I'd seriously suggest getting some 2.1 speakers like the Logitech Z213 or the Creative A120. They aren't any good either, but at least both of them come with a sub, which allows them to cover a much wider range of frequency.

If you OC the 4790k to 4.5GHz it will be almost equal to stock 7700k in performance.
Haswell is still kicking strong for another few years.

You basically paid $150 for something that is worth at least $350 and probably $400.

Here's what I want to do, help me fix anything.
IT LOOKS LIKE A LOT BUT ALL I REALLY NEED TO KNOW IS IF THE BUILD I'VE PLANNED IS GOOD, CAN IMPROVE, AND IS WORTH IT OVER WHAT I CAN SLAP TOGETHER (sorry caps)
Goal: run 4K at 100fps for 100hz pg348q 34" asus monitor in for honor and others on ultra.

    build:
•reuse level 10gt white full size case
•asus Maximus code z270 mobo OR OTHER! (see questions/concerns)
    • i7-7700k (open to others!)
    • SLI dual 1080 goal, single 1080 FTW for now (see questions/concerns)
    • ddr4 16gb 3600 ram
    • multiple hard drives, see below (questions/concerns)
    • corsair h80 CPU cooler
    • corsair 850watt gold psu (6/7 years
    old but still kicking it!)
    • hopes and dreams

    QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS:

    •  I've got an older (700s?) Samsung SSD, a very old, less than 100gb SSD with windows 10, and a 1tb hybrid for now. M.2 soon. Is this a total waste with the new Intel mobo tech for RAM And data swap-page? Should I dive into m.2 right away?
    • Currently can take the FTW acx3.0 I got in January out of razer core as I'm going desktop. Can buy other brand and still SLI. Just can't go 1080gtx and 1080ti, has to be SLI 1080 gtx for now.... unless I buy a ti and wait to SLI with another.... only founders edition is available now too I think?
    • re ASUS MAX CODE: is formula worth it if not running open loop? Should I run open loop?). I wish there was a high end WHITE mother board.....
    • case tech: my tower is old, but will be cleaned up well (it's always been pretty clean, so no issues), it had great airflow for it's time, wondering if new case tech (like all these corsair box setups, or cool looking clear case by TT) is worth the spend?
    • budget constraints: I've got 810-1000 in store credit to microcenter, depending on what I return.... so..... I can PRETTY MUCH only afford 1400 right now MAX, and would love to keep it at 1000. That means I can only get CPU, RAM, mobo and have them do the swap cause I'm lazy and don't want to be responsible for fucking it up, it's been so long...
    • is this even worth it? I could just go buy another 1080ftw and run it on what I have with a CPU bottleneck I'm sure. Would it be worth it to go all out yet? See current rigs
    • would I be better off running the desktop with the 1080gtx and repurposing the laptop for what it should be used for (work)?
    • DO NOT AMD RYZEN ME, I WONT HAVE IT! Lol

    current rig(s):
•i5-2500k oc'd comfortably at 5ghz, can go quite a bit higher I bet....
    • 780gtx EVGA SC or 1080 GTX FTW acx3.0 (it's in a razer core, which I'm giving up on that as a desktop replacement)
    • 256gb Samsung evo older gen ssd
    • weird and random LESS THAN 128gb SSD for windows 10 pro only
    • 32gb (I think, it's been awhile) corsair vengeance ddr3
    • asus z77 sabertooth mobo (I loved this thing!)
    • corsair h80 single fan CPU closed loop "water cooler"
    • corsair (I think?) 850watt gold power supply
    • level 10GT snow edition full size TOWA POWA
    • ASUS ROG STRIX 34" pg348q ultrawide 100hz OC curved beast-of-a-monitor running a GOOD 3ft display port cable or HDMI (booooo)

    WHAT I'VE BEEN USING

razer blade 14" late 2016, 1060 gtx, i7-6700hq, 16gb ram, QHD touch display, coolermaster cooling mat, razer core with 1080 GTX FTW on t3, above monitor,

    Periphs if curious:
all the mech keyboards (I have to pick a favorite, the ASUS claymore I tried was a lemon, replaced with a lemon: x40 das, k95 platinum, k70 speed switches, 68key fun boards, CM rapid fire TK, etc) and an ASUS SPATHA wireless mouse with razer mamba wireless as backup (just fun to share periphs)

Hey guys, I am definitely new to this forum and relatively new to PC building. However, I really want to build a PC for myself for gaming and normal use. I have a list of parts that I picked out for this build. I just wanted to share it with everyone to see what the more experienced people think about it. I am from Canada and I have a budget of $1200 CAD for this build, so if anyone can help me reduce the price anywhere that would be SUPER! I have not added any peripherals and I am approximately at $1320 CAD. So yeah, heres my list.

    CPU: Intel Core i5-7600K 3.8GHz Quad-Core Processor

CPU Cooler: Corsair H60 54.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler

Motherboard: Asus Z170-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard

    RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory

Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive   AND   Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

GPU: Asus Radeon RX 480 8GB ROG STRIX Video Card

Case: Corsair SPEC-02 ATX Mid Tower Case

PSU: Corsair CSM 550W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply

    Thanks,

Thats a really well balanced system so far, but you could save quite a few bucks here and there.

Don't get an AIO liquid cooling system at all This should save you around 130$ alone. Get something like a Coolermaster Hyper212 Evo instead and three Corsair ML120 120mm PWM fans, or similar ones, for good case airflow and cool looks.

Get a i5 6600k instead. Virtually the same performance, but up to 30$ cheaper. Also since the 6600k is a Skylake part you won't have to update your BIOS (,which is kind of near damn impossible to do without a cpu that runs off of your chipset out of the box).

Scratch the SSD. Sounds like pretty bad advice in the year 2017, but hear me out. If you only get the mechanical harddrive right now, not only will you save yourself about 100$ but you also won't regret buying such a small-capacity SSD later. I'd say save up some cash and buy a 480gb or even 960gb Corsair Force LE SSD later down the line.

You might want to consider buying the Asus RX480 DUAL 8GB instead. The DUAL cards are a bit cheaper than the STRIX ones and they are white, so it would also fit your color-scheme

While its a good thing not to max out the wattage of a powersupply you could easily get the slightly cheaper Corsair 450w unit and still be fine.

Most of your stuff is still very viable I'd say.
Your PSU most likely is a generic 460W Dell unit. They used to be manufactured by Delta, and their quality is actually sufficient for most normal application scenarios.
True, you won't be overclocking a Haswell i5 with locked multi anyways, so there is really no point in getting a different mainboard.
A GTX 1060 6GB is a fine choice. If you plan to stick to 1080p for your main monitor resolution it absolutely suffice your needs for now. You could also look into buying a RX480 8GB. Most RX480 models are quite a bit cheaper than a 1060 6GB cards, while only being marginally slower. If you plan to step up your monitor game to lets say 1440p I'd recommend buying nothing less than a GTX 1070. While still being able to game in 1440p with a 1060 you won't be able to max out your games or hit 60fps most of the time. Getting zhe right GPU always is a tough choice, it heavily depends on the games you play and your attitude towards graphics in general.
Agreed. Don't upgrade from your Haswell chip just yet.
If you only play games and don't use resource-intensive apps, like Cinema 4D, Blender, SketchUp, etc. 8GB will be fine.
This absolutely depends on your budget... But I'd always recommend the Bitfenix Shinobi Core. Roomy with good airlfow and a lot of cable management options. If you want to spend under 50$ I'd recommend the Sharkoon S25-S.

I'd blinldy recommend the Logitech G403 mouse and the G610 keyboard.

    Hello community!

Only found LinusTechTips a few weeks ago and I am completely hooked, hooked to the point where I want to build a PC again. I am 34 yrs old and haven't built a PC in a long while, used to do it all the time. Since I am working from home more these days I need to beef up my PC as I do video editing, 3d rendering etc.

I have recently purchased a MSI GTX Aero 8OC 1080 (ugh much to my disappointment when the Ti came out!). I have noticed that I am loosing about 10% - 15% performance in benchmarks with the same card others are using.
So I think it is time to upgrade.

What I have at the moment, dont laugh! Its an old Lenovo Razer which has had a few upgrades down the road.

    Specs are:
Generic Lenovo 90AV000YUK Haswell board (I said dont laugh!  )
    Core i7 4790 (3.6Ghz)
    32 GB DDR3 Kingston KHX1600C10D3 (800Mhz Edit: 1600Mhz)
    2 x 1 TB Samsung EVO 850 SSD
    1 x 2 TB WD Black Series
Nvidia MSI GTX 1080 Aero 8 OC
    Corsair RM850W PSU

I am thinking of upgrading to:
Corsair CC-9011098-WW Crystal Series 570X Case
ASUS LGA 1151 MAXIMUS IX HERO Intel Z270
    Corsair CW-9060025-WW Hydro Series H100i V2 240 Cooler
    Intel Core i7-7700K 4.2 GHz
    Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (4x 8GB)

Most of these have been inspired by Linus and Luke as they seem to trust these brands

Accodring to information obtained by german security and technology news site heise.de the new AMD GPUs are coming in April.

The scheduled release of the RX 570 and 580 are allegedly April 4th and the lower end RX 550 & 560 are set to be released a week later on April 11th.

But, the RX500 series is rumored to be only rebrands and no new chips, as some may have hoped.
AMD promised to release Vega in the first half of 2017, so they still have until June 30th. The news site sees Computex as a possible release date for Vega. (30th May to 3rd June)

Thats what you call a bottleneck. That poor little Athlon X4 can't deliver data to that mighty RX 480 fast enough. You might get better results once you overclock your CPU by a substantial amount, and maybe you should also give your RAM a slight boost. 70 fps is indeed ridiculously low if you own a RX 480. With an actually good CPU your system should generate above 240 fps with ease, depending on your settings of course.
