So, before I start this of I wanna say that I am a networking noob, but I am the only person that will actually has some basic idea and will do something in this family but i don't have a lot of time to learn about all that stuff besides work and university so some of my questions might be stupid.. Let's cut to the case. I live in Austria, we have a crappy isp with a crappy modem/router/wifi ap combo to go along with it. Because the wifi is so crappy we have a cheap tp-link 841n router to handle it. Lately wifi has been very unstable and slow, often to the point where i can't load a basic webpage, the wired connections are fine though. My guess was that the poor tp link is beeing overloaded by the huge amount of wifi devices, but i don't want to just run out and spend 100€ on a new router, so i wanted to make shure its actually the problem. I installed dd-wrt on the router to get some better look at the resource usage. Here comes the actual problem: After trying to set everything hback up i didn't manage to access tge routers gui and the modem's/the internet at the same time. So I can go on the internet through wireless but can't access the router settigs unless i disconnect it from the modem and restart the pc. My guess is that there is something with the DHCP servers but after all timely possible research i still aren't any smarter. Also with the original firmare there was never any problem. The network setup is:
Modem, connected to phone line
To modem connect:
TV box from isp, only works when connected to modem (I tried running the modem/router in modem only mode and let the tp-link handle everything, but the tv box wouldn't get any signal
My Dad's PC (can also connect to Tp-Link with no diference)
Tp-Link Router, one LAN port to WAN port
To TP-Link Router connect:
At any given time at least 2 PCs (one running plex media server), 4 phones, 1 tablet, 1 media center pc for plex media center and netflix (everyhting wireless)
The modem has 10.0.0.138 as IP and The TP-Link 192.186.1.1; When internet over WIFI is working, ipconfig reports 10.0.0.138 as standard gateway.
I hope that somehow makes sense and that maybe someone has some sort of Idea what could be the problem
