Fetzie got a reaction from jagdtigger in CableMod to recall all 12VHPWR angled adapters
More to the point, your home contents insurer might take a dim view of you continuing to use a device that has specifically been recalled due to the risk of overheating and melting things if yours actually were to cause a fire, and refuse to cover the damage. Could end up costing considerably more than the 1200 bucks/euros for a new 4080.

No one disagrees with that at this point . Infact all i see at the moment is nitpicking over how wrong linus is . Not to mention people looking for an apology on an unproven allegation .

THat said there is a minority here who really want to watch someone's reputation burn to the ground . They are trying to get staff to speak out and making claims of guilt because of silence . They are not helping the situation at all .

SO getting back to facts this is what we have .

Employee calls out steve and hardware unboxed in a video claiming claiming knowledge of how they do testing . This comments should have never been made as they know nothing of the inner workings of weather channel .  Billets labs prototype gets auctioned off . Was never meant to leave the hands of LMG . Otherwise it should have been sent back . A bad communication caused this issue .  Steve finds out about the comments made by the LMG employee and got information on the billet labs prototype . Decides to do a factual pieces on it and LMG's inaccuracies in their videos . Content was factual in all aspects . Linus makes an emotional rant in the LTT forum . In a Braindead emotional rant call out Steve for his journalistic practices . For the most part Linus tells the truth but never once took ownership of the mistakes made by his company while he was at the helm .  Community starts to fire back at LMG and linus more aggressively .  GN does another article about linus and his post . This time with anger Steve doesnt hold back .Though steves  billet lab prototype comment on been SOLD while technically accurate , it wasnt a 100% true statement .  Linus goes quiet as the community demands and apology . Video apology goes up on floatplane first then youtube a short while later .  In the apology they Stated exactly what they are doing and going to do .  YouTube community is pissed that LMG's paying customers see it first . Some of the community can't accept it . It was scripted , monetized and so on .  LMG respond to clarify the video was not monetized and they remove the usual LTT store links . Instead linked to the forum for the community to discuss . They also gave their reasons for the jokes . Maddison's allegations come to light and another tirade begins within the community , LINUS and TERREN both made very public statements about the alleged abuse . They clarified they will be an independent investigation as well . Not only that they will publish their findings .  So far what linus , Yvonne and Terren said they were going to do seems to be happening .  I think i have the facts covered there for the most part . I know LMG would wants to do something for the FloatPlane crowd who directly pay for their content . However that would be an unrecoverable PR disaster .  So to floatplane guys out there please be patient . They can't give you something and ignore the majority of the community . As for the rest of the community its time to put down pitchforks and stop making ridiculous demands after getting the apology . THe only things linus and LMG owes us now are as follows . THey stick to their word and make changes internally for the better .  Get back to make factual entertaining videos and finally publish what they stated they are going to publish .

Now can we get on with making suggestions on how LMG can be more transparent in the future and change for the better . I am tired of  reading almost 60 pages of toxic infighting with no real suggestions to help LMG improve to our benefit  .  SO i am going to start by reposting some of what i already posted and add to it since i have had time to think about things objectively .

Suggestions for LMG going forward .

    FOR THE STAFF
Every employee should have access to a code of conduct set by the company from now on . It should be plainly written so even an idiot can understand .  Employees should not by any means make comments about other channels  outside of LMG . Especially when they dont know the inner workings of those companies . Everytime a new hire comes in they should be immediately be brought in and given all relevant information needed . This should include a pamphlet with who to contact in the case of workplace abuse . Phone numbers , emails etc.  With the coming out of emily  , the abuse claims and the sheer pressure of workloads your staff have . Maybe it might be time to have someone for mental health available for staff . Be they an outside source or employed as a councillor .  Regular meetings between staff and managers in every department to gauge if workloads are magable .     This one is for Linus . You need to treat your company and employees as an investment . You can still have friends and have a fun work environment . You need to act more like the owner of the company .   All at LMG need to look at criticism objectively . While its O.K to get emotional , it is not O.K to shrug off your responsibility as a member of LMG  crew . That should go without saying from the lowest ranks to the top brass . Take a page out of toyota book for the production line . Toyota get staff input on how to stream line things . Its tested out and  suggestions that works from a staff member should be given a bonus . Use the talent you have and incentivise them to help improve the company and your processes .    FOR THE COMMUNITY

Get the labs website started . Even if its only one page with testing methodology present so the tech community at large can scrutinize it , and make suggestions to better the standards of testing .  Get the hardware benchmarking suite into the public domain so it can be scrutinised . Again can be done via git hub . However the general public need to be able to find it easily . So posting a link via the LTT youtube page for now will do . WHen the labs site is up have a dedicated page to it which is also easy to find   I think a video needs to be done on the changes you are currently making to the company to improve things .  Yearly updates on the LMG as a whole and changes you would like to make going forward . What you still need to work on and what has worked and not worked .    When the labs changes testing procedures you need to notify the community . Adding information from other tests , changing games and other software and the reasoning behind it . This also should include any changes to the coolers used on test benches .   Get involved with other creators in your space and discuss testing with them . Get an idea on how you all do it and make it better across the board . No point in trying to be the best in this space if you cant uplift your fellow creators .  THis one is for use the community . While 15.5 million are subscribed here . Stop using LTT as your only source of information . You need to cross-reference their results with others so mistakes made by one doesn't lead you down the wrong path with a purchase .  Mistakes will be made at some point . Depending on one source will always lead to trouble .  Be more open about problems within LMG . Although the attacks here have been brutal . The community is more forgiving if you show your woulds rather than trying to hide them .  Suys feel fee to add or change anything i suggested here . This is what the conversation should be about . Whats happened chant be changed . However we can make suggestions that might make things better in the future

Fetzie reacted to LAwLz in Backblaze: SSDs might be as unreliable as disk drives
Yep, exactly what I thought too.

For those who didn't read about it, Backblaze used to post "reliability reports" or something along those lines for drives. The problem was that their sample sizes were all over the place, and they were running drives way outside of their intended use.
For example they could buy a 100 dollar external hard drive, rip it out of the enclosure, put it into a rack with vibrations from a hundred other drives, and then subject it to a ton of read/writes and then they went "look at how poorly this Seagate drive did in our test".

Sometimes they had a sample size of like 20 drives and 1 of them died, making the failure rate 4%. Meanwhile, they would put that up against a drive where they had 1000 and 40 of them died.

That's why their reports were always soooo out of line with other stats such as RMA rates. For someone like Newegg their drive RMA rates were like 1%. Meanwhile, stats from Backblaze showed failure rates like 10 times higher.
It's like if I started using smartphones as hammers and then reported on "reliability of modern smartphones" based on that.

As long as Backblaze has such varied sample sizes and run their drives outside of their intended uses, I can't take their statistics seriously.

    Edit:
    Read the full report now.
For those wondering, yes, their sample size for SSDs are way smaller than the HDDs.
They have had 7 SSD failures and 551 HDD failures, and somehow they think that's enough data to extrapolate what the numbers will look like several years into the future. They only had a handful of SSD models, one of which they only had 49 drives of and one of them died so they put the AFR of that at model at 2.82%.

And before anyone asks, yes, they still use consumer grade parts in their server environment. That SSD they only has 49 of? That's a Seagate BarraCuda SSD which is no longer sold, but I found an old listing for it that seems to indicate it was a $80 drive that was "perfect for laptops and desktop PCs".

For crying out loud they even list "DELLBOSS VD" as one of the "drives" they use. The problem is that "DELLBOSS VD" is not even an SSD. It's a PCIe to M.2 expansion card. So we have no idea which SSDs they even put in that.

    Edit 2:
As @wanderingfool2 pointed out here, the full report" I read was not actually the "full report" they used as the basis for the article.
For example the 551 HDD failures vs 7 SSD failures I quoted were measured over the course of 7 years. Meanwhile, the HDD vs SSD article only uses a subset of that data when it draws their conclusions.
I still think it's a really shitty article full of holes and irrelevant data, but it's not as out of whack as I first thought.

I don't know if it is EU law, but at least in Germany software cannot be locked to specific hardware and, for example Microsoft, has to let you use your Windows 10 license on another PC.

It would be an interesting test case if somebody were to challenge a TPM hardware id ban in court over here.

Assuming you keep the aperture the same:

Let's say you take a photo at 1/1000th of a second at 2000 ISO.

If you increase the exposure time to 1/500th of a second you can halve the ISO to 1000 and get the same overall exposure. If you drop the speed to 1/250th you can halve the ISO again to 500. 1/125th of a second -> 250 ISO. 1/64th of a second -> 125 ISO.

Of course, at some point you'll have a shutter speed that is too slow to freeze motion and get a sharp picture.

To be honest, I wouldn't consider any lens longer than 200mm without some kind of active stabilization. It makes so much of a difference (my 300PF feels like it's on a gimbal when VR is on). It's hard enough keeping a moving animal in frame at 50+ metres as it is, you don't want to have to contend with even more erratic movement from camera shake on top of that, along with having to run at 1/4000 and 3200+ ISO in broad daylight to compensate for it.

If he wants to get into bird photography then a pair of decent-but-cheapish binoculars will help him find them (it's a lot easier to scan for wildlife than through the camera viewfinder, especially as you get your natural depth perception). I have a pair of Nikon Prostaff 7s, great binoculars for the price (~200 euro), waterproof, light, good colours.

Also, he'll want a tripod. Everybody thinks they don't need one, until they try taking photographs of things that are a long way away and can't get them in focus or sharp. Because they're not using a tripod and at those distances even a millimetre of camera movement is enough to make a bird jump halfway across the sensor.

I wouldn't say that with complete confidence, the D500 has some features that the Z50 doesn't have and some that it simply is better at. For example:
2.4 million dot back screen (Z50 has 1 million) 1/8000s max shutter speed (Z50 only goes to 1/4000) Headphone port (Z50 doesn't have one) Flash sync port (Z50 doesn't have one) NFC (Z50 doesn't have it) Top LCD panel (Z50 doesn't have one) 15 autofocus points at f/8 mean you can use teleconverters and keep AF (Z50 has none IIRC) Two card slots (1 XQD, 1 UHS2) (Z50 only has 1 UHS2) means that you have an essentially endless frame buffer on the D500 even at 10 FPS), and you don't lose all your pictures if one card dies. Illuminated buttons can be a life-saver in the dark, very underrated feature IMO The battery life is much better Things that are better about the Z50:
The Z50 can obviously use the optically superior Z-mount lenses in addition to adapted F lenses, and it also has more focus points (209 instead of 153). It's also cheaper, so there's that too.

The electronic viewfinder gives you WYSIWYG exposure controls which is, IMO, the biggest reason to get a mirrorless camera (no need to do finder-shots while dialling in manual exposure settings, and it also helps you remember you're still in "dark environment exposure" settings after moving outside which has never happened to me 😉).

The Z50 also weighs quite a bit less. The D500 weighs nearly twice as much as the Z50 which will be noticeable, in particular on long hikes or longer photography sessions. This does, however, move the centre of gravity towards you which helps position the camera correctly while hand-holding or when you have the camera on a free-moving tripod/monopod head, especially when using a super-telephoto lens like the 200-500 f/5.6 or the upcoming 200-600 (probably also f/5.6) S lens for the Z mount, so I'm not going to give either camera points for that.
