  1. So I'm an incoming freshman in college, and I'm trying to narrow down my choices for a good laptop. It doesn't necessarily need to be ultra powerful (I've already got a decent gaming rig at home), but it does need to be portable, well built, good looking screen, and I'd like it to be touchscreen for note taking. I don't necessarially want to spend over $1000, but if the price is right, I'd be willing to go a little over. I'm l pretty much looking for something that will get me through the next 4 years. I've found two pretty good deals online already, one for a Dell XPS 13 9370 with the 8th Gen i7, 8GB DDR3, 256gb SSD, and the 4k touchscreen, for $1199. Ive also found the Lenovo Yoga 920 with the same processor, SSD, and memory, but it's only got a 1080p panel. The 920 is $1000. So I'm curious to hear if anyone here has experience with both of these notebooks. I've heard a ton of good things about the XPS, but I'm not as familiar with the Yoga. I'd love your advice, or if you have any other suggestions for other laptops, I'd love to hear them. Thanks!!
  2. It's definitely noticably better than my old monitor. I don't really have much to compare to since it's only my second monitor ever, but they definitely pop. The whites are really "white" likewise with the blacks, and it's just more vibrant overall.
  3. I'm coming from a 5ms TN monitor. I did some reading online and I don't think it's THAT big of an issue. I can already tell the increased refresh rate, but I haven't noticed any ghosting or anything.
  4. Oh it is. The stand is completely metal too, which is a plus I guess.
  5. It's pretty damn thin. It's a completely flat screen, no plastic bezel around the screen, but there is a buffer of probably 3-4mm from the edge of the monitor to the screen.
  6. Actually just bought this last night, and can vouch for it. My BestBuy did list it on the tag as 60Hz, but I plugged it in and was able to achieve 75Hz after changing the setting in Windows. Either way a 1080p IPS monitor for $85 is a good deal any way I see it. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo-li2264d-21-5-ips-led-hd-monitor-black/5203101.p?skuId=5203101
  7. So I'm building my sister a PC, and I'm selling her my monitor as a reason to get a new one. I'm hoping to get an IPS one this time, as I just bought a cheap VN monitor for my first build. I went to my local BestBuy, and their prices seemed to outmatch Amazon due to a sale they have going on. I narrowed my choices down to 2 monitors, but that isn't set in stone yet. 1) Lenovo - LI2264D - It's the same size of the Acer I have now, and that's been pretty good for me, but an inch or two more might be better. What really stuck out to me was the 75hz refresh rate. I think that would pair nicely with my newly acquired RX 480 and i5-6600k. The only issue I see is the 7ms response time. I have a 5hz monitor right now, would I notice a difference? 2) Acer H236HL BID - It's a 23" monitor, a size I'd like to go up to. I saw this one in the store, and personally it looked better than the other monitors they had on display. I didn't see the Lenovo. It's got the 5ms response time I'm used to, but the refresh rate is still at 60hz. The glossy screen might be an issue at some point, but I tend to work in a pretty dark room. It's $15 more expensive than the Lenovo. I'm just wondering if any of you have experience with either of these monitors, or if you could recommend something better for around the same price. Thanks, and Happy Holidays!
  8. I see. Never worked in small cases before (especially with powerful processors), so I didn't even consider case temps. I'll have to clarify what size case he wants, but either way it's shaping up to be a real sweet rig.
  9. Damn that's actually looking really nice. Never really occurred to me that he might be able to get an i7 for that much. Thanks, i'm definitely going to consider this. Maybe just do 2x8gb instead of 2x4gb RAM for future proofing. Also, since he's not going to be overclocking, why the AIO watercooling? Is it a hot-running processor?
  10. That looks better to me as well, but the only thing is that I'm not really comfortable with overclockihg someone else's computer, and the actual person I'm building it for isn't going to overclock anyway. I don't want him to spend money on something he isn't going to use. Also, he said that he would want to take the PC over to friends houses occasionally, that's why I had the Micro ATX case and motherboard.
  11. So my mom's friend's son needs a gaming rig. She said that she was about to buy a prebuilt for $2000, so I offered to build her one for $1000, including monitor and OS. I guess her son has been gaming on Xbox and wanted to get into Pc Gaming. I don't think he's too tech savvy, he just likes his games. So I didn't plan for overclocking, and included a Hybrid Drive so it would be faster in general, and so he wouldn't have the hassle of managing multiple drives. I also didn't go too overboard with powerful components, just because I don't assume he really wants or needs anything over 1080p on Ultra. I planned this out on PCPP, I'd just like some input. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Vsqwyf
  12. Took me an hour, then a little extra for cable management and Windows install. That person might've been adding in time he took planning out what parts to buy, or maybe he was doing something really sophisticated like custom water cooling, or case modding. But seriously, it's really not hard at all. You need a philips head screwdriver and maybe some zipties. That's basically it. Linus has a bunch of videos on how to do it, just look at one of his build guides.
  13. Xbox One S + Battlefield 1 + 3-month Xbox Live Gold subscription = $210 (USD). For my 10-year old brother's Christmas present.
  14. I was looking at the 8GB 480. The issue is that I've got a B85 board which can't overclock, so I might as well just switch to Skylake at that point, but then I wouldn't have the money for a new GPU. That's why the Xeon is looking quite intriguing. It works with my board, overclocking isn't possible with my motherboard anyway, it's more powerful than the non-K Haswell i5s, but isn't i7 expensive.
  15. This is really intriguing me. To my understanding, it's basically a 4690 but WITH Hyperthreading, so basically an i7 at that point, but without integrated graphics. Sounds like a really good deal. Any objections?
  16. My budget is around $450, maybe push it to $500. That's for both the CPU and GPU together
  17. So 2 years ago I built my PC with an i3-4150. It's come time to upgrade that CPU, and probably my GPU (270x) as well. I've noticed my CPU has been lagging behind, as I mainly play CPU intensive games like Civ 6 and Cities: Skylines. I'm not sure where to start on a new one. I definitely want to step up to an i5, but I can't decide on staying with Haswell, or upgrading to Skylake. I have a B85 chipset motherboard so I can't overclock a new Haswell right now anyway, and that's something I'd like to start trying out, but it isn't a must have. I don't have the money to get everything I need to switch to Skylake (CPU, Motherboard, RAM) and a get new Graphics Card. So I just need some advice on if I should wait on Skylake, get a Haswell i5 as well as a new GPU (was thinking about the RX 480), or get a Skylake chip, mobo, and ram, but wait on the GPU. Thanks a bunch!
  18. The thing that gets me the most is all the people who are ignorant to the different views of different Christian religions. Most people think we're all anti-gay and anti-immigration and think we follow the Bible like a history book. I'm Catholic, and I go to a very progressive (liberal) church. Our Priest is extremely focused on others. Our wine and cheese after Mass is sponsored by the LGBT community, and we accept everybody for who they are. We don't shun Gay people, divorcees, or non-Catholics. We welcome them into the whole. We don't follow the Bible like it's etched in stone. Our Priest teaches that a lot of the Bible is metaphor. No, 2 people named Adam and Eve most likely didn't take a bite from a literal apple and then God punished all of humanity for it. It's a metaphor for how we should live our lives, and how we should follow God. Christianity and Science can coexist peacefully. So many people think that all Christians are traditional Southern Baptists (nothing against them, but you know what I mean) and we're not. Pope Francis is one of the most progressive Popes ever, and honestly, it pisses me off that so many non-Christians profile all of us based on a small group who aren't cooperating with modern-day views and rights.
  19. I really used to like Leafy. When he used to do stories and genuine good content, and not clickbait drama shit. I prefer Luna now adays. Never heard of or seen iDubbbz. Filthy Frank, I haven't seen his newer vids, but his older ones I used to watch, and they were funny as hell.
  20. He's not my next door neighbor, but he does live in my neighborhood. So we have an invisible fence for our 2 French Brittanys. They stay in our yard, and don't wander off. So this guy, he always walks his dogs right by our house, and always on our side of the street. He literally just stops in the middle of our driveway with his dogs, and demands we put ours inside. By this time our dogs noticed his, and they started barking and going crazy. But this piece of shit just won't stop. He just plants himself right in our drive until we corral the dogs back into the house. And he isn't nice about it. I mean he started full on yelling at my 8 year old brother to get the dogs in, and started pretty much screaming at my mother. We've explained to him so many times that WE HAVE AN INVISIBLE FENCE, THEY WILL NOT GET AT YOUR SHIH TZUS! It would be ok if he just kept walking, maybe mentioned that he doesn't like our dogs, but he just halts in our yard and becomes a real nuisance until we get them inside. The worst part, is that some idiot let the guy on the HOA board, so he potentioal has the power to really put us in deep shit. He'll even go "yeah you wouldn't want anyone to mention this to the board, would you" But every fucking evening, at 6PM sharp when all the kids and dogs are outside playing, he just comes on walking down the road and we have to get the dogs in as fast as we can, so that another situation doesn't arise. Always the same route, always our side of the road. What a dick, this guy.
  21. Was really tired one night, but decided that it was time to install Linux alongside Windows. While installing, I accidentally erased my entire Windows partition. Not just on my main drive, but also on my secondary hard drive. Yeah, maybe shouldn't have tried that at 3am xD.
  22. So this is the final act of my mom's iMac debacle. She literally just fixed it. For almost $200, she replaced her 8 year old iMac's power supply. I'm truly at a loss for words. I thought I might be able to get through to her. Just last night I managed to get her precious pictures off her external drive, and backed it up on my PC. The guy at the store even said the part was really expensive, and it might not be worth it to fix. Again, it's got 2gb of RAM, some old Core 2 Duo, and a mere 250gb of storage, 90% of which is already full. I'm sorry I'm ranting, but im a Scrooge. Price/performance is EVERYTHING in my eyes. But she's the one with the money, and "She likes her Mac". But again, I may have gotten a job out of it. I told the owner of the store that I'm working on my Cisco/MTA certs, and he offered me a summer job. So maybe it was worth it, but it still really pisses me off that she fixed it xD. I just wanted to share this.
  23. So it's a lost cause. She took it in, because like I said "She likes her Mac". She doesn't want to "spend my whole tax return on a new top of the line PC I sell her". On the up side, the dude at the computer shop offered me a job xD. I mentioned my certs and how I've been troubleshooting this PC for a while now and he offered me a job over the summer xD. I guess some good came out of it after all!
  24. The hard drive is like 99% full from all her pictures, so I'm sure that is a factor. But she leaves tons of applications running at all times, and it can't handle all of it.
