  1. Hello everybody, So here's the situation and what I'd like to have happen. hopefully you can offer some advice. I'm a student living in a dorm, with a desktop and a laptop. The campus is all WiFi covered, and the connection in the dorm is pretty great, so I've been using that for both my devices. The ethernet works in my room, but is slow in comparison and each device has to be registered and stuff and I see no benefit. I would like to have an ethernet LAN present in my room, to enable file sharing between devices as well as the occasional gaming session with a few friends. I have a run-of-the-mill 5 port unmanaged switch and cables, as well as a single crossover cable. My laptop has an ethernet port, and my desktop has two NICs. All are Intel gigibit. I have used the crossover cable to some success between the two devices, but it is not very reliable and I often get a "cannot access --devicename--" error when trying to connect. I have also tried using standard patch cables from each machine to the switch, giving the same result. Assigning static IP addresses for each machine for the wired connection did help, and they connect consistently when the other network adapters are disabled, but once I re-enable the wireless adapter on whichever machine I'm trying to access the other one from I usually get the above error. So I'm figuring there are IP address confusions going on or something, I'm not really sure. I'm pretty new to networking and stuff, and don't know much about how all this works, so help would be appreciated. I read another thread here about setting up a LAN for a LAN party at a school using a switch, but that network wasn't required to be connected to the internet plus I'm sure the ethernet situation was different. Pretty much I just want to be connected both to the LAN for file sharing and all and also to the wireless network for internet. Thank-you all!
  2. My favorite part is definitely the removable battery and extra storage options!
