  1. Thanks for the reply, the version thing totally slipped my mind when i wrote the topic and for some reason i just assumed the celeron wouldn't support ECC. Thanks for pointing that out.
  2. So I'm doing research into building a unRAID box with the idea of getting something bare bones put together now with the potential for improvement later on. The reason I've gone with this server grade MB is because I'm after IPMI, because at least 50% of the reason for building this is to learn stuff about servers, enterprise, virtualisation, networking etc. So the idea is that i initially pair the E3C236D4U with a Celeron G3900 as its about the cheapest thing i can put in there, and later down the track upgrade to a Xeon E3-1230 down the track as i need more power for more virtualisation/ECC. My question is, will the system even POST if i put ECC memory with the Celeron, or will i have to buy non-ECC ram now, and buy ECC memory with the Xeon later? The ASRock page says it supports both Xeons and Celerons and also ECC and non-ECC but I'm wondering whether they are cross-compatible. 3. As far as I'm aware a Spdif output works the same as any other audio device, and as a user of a 5.1 HT setup I can vouch for the fact that almost all games have really good surround support. I believe this is due to the fact most games outsource their audio handling to an audio engine like Wwise. As for OP, id take a miss on the sound card. Spdif carries a digital signal, which means that the soundcard would simply be taking the digital signal from your pc and handing it off to your home theatre system without touching it. Just plug the HT system into the Spdif on the motherboard. As for the Headphones, if you can, hook them up to your home theatre via a headphone port or something or just settle with the on-board sound. If you simply must have something else, get an amp/DAC recommended by any one of the more knowledgeable people on here. A sound card being inside the case is subject to the same noise the on-board is anyway, and therefore doesn't offer much use these days.
  4. Regarding the 300W power supply, it pulling 375 from the wall sounds totally reasonable to me. once you factor in the 80% inefficiency your left with only 15 watts more inefficiency OR headway.
  5. doesn't solve the hotplug issue, all the boards I've seen need to be powered down to accept a new drive.
  6. Hey guys, So the idea is that I hook up something similar to an external USB SATA dock but to the inside of a 5.25 inch bay hard drive dock. I've already got the bay dock but its hooked up to a regular SATA port and I'd like to free that up for another hard drive I have lying around. All my other SATA ports are taken and there's no room for a PCIe card. I can adapt the USB connector to a free USB header and was hoping there'd be a USB SATA controller with molex or sata for power. Something like this but hot-pluggable and with a Molex or SATA power jack instead of a barrel. Unless someone knows of some adapter I can use to adapt a Molex to a barrel connector. Most of these boards just use 12V so it should work fine right?
  7. Favourite Item is the cooler because im using stock Intel and it sucks.
  8. Favourite thing about the Z2 is definitely the front facing speakers combined with an amazing camera. dbrand. What can I say. Regardless of what happens I'm buying a black metal skin for something. (Favourite thing is the black metal skin.)
  9. The 3 hours of use on such a powerful machine is definitely the highlight for me.
  10. The pixel density is by far my favourite thing.
  11. What I appreciate most about audio in games, is when it has great surround audio. I game 99% with a 5.1 surround sound pc speaker setup and have my surround speakers strapped to the sides of my chair. Yeah the audio quality isn't audiophile, buts it is really really good and I find amazing for "adventure" gaming. Two games that really stick out as taking advantage of 5.1 is skyrim and surprisingly minecraft. I can tell where literally everything is in that game.
  12. Id really love the expandable storage.
  13. I have a total of 4 drives in my system. 1 x Intel 120GB 330 boot SSD that i got as a birthday present from grandma (cool grandma right?) 1 x Seagate 2TB barracuda for cheap bulk storage of movies music etc aswell as a monthly clone of the SSD - now full 1 x 750GB toshiba thing from my old laptop that serves as my dedicated Steam hard drive - now full 1 x 320GB WD laptop drive that I scavenged from a broken laptop that is used for origin and uplay - nearly full so i only actually paid for the 2TB seagate and now desperatly need to expand my storage Facebook share: (https://www.facebook.com/infernap12/posts/718550061495700) Twitter share @infernap12: (https://twitter.com/infernap12/status/380873236872851456) Steam Community share infernap12: (http://steamcommunity.com/id/infernap12/status/1379642492)
