Installing Ubuntu on an old PC
Burusutazu replied to I am an SSD's topic in Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows
Mint will not run on 256mb of RAM, even with XFCE. I thought I would mention that you can easily invest 10$ on 2x1gb sticks of ddr ram if you really want to breath life back into this pc. -
a distro to utilize all my resources?
Burusutazu replied to biotoxin's topic in Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows
Primary RAM usage in Linux comes from the gui though, and KDE is pretty thirsty. I honestly don't know any way to use 32gb of RAM in Linux through daily use. -

KDE is the desktop of choice if you have the extra RAM, it's well known for putting features before being lightweight. I myself never really saw the difference in features between KDE and say, Gnome, though. From my experience it becomes difficult to max out 8gb on Linux (ubuntu, gnome desktop) I have to be doing a very hard workload for it to push 8gb. -
So I've had my Dell Inspiron 13 for over a year now and I love it, I use it daily for my college work and thus I carry it around in my backpack. I don't ever toss my backpack down and I'm pretty careful when im taking it off but somehow I've damaged my laptop near the usb ports. The port still works and the damage is purely cosmetic but it's an ugly reminder that I failed to keep my laptop in near perfect condition. So I wanted the opinions of the people here. Should I turn in my 2-Year accidental damage warrenty to have the damage repaired or should I hold out till the end of my warranty gets closer. The warrenty expires March of next year. Heres a photo of the damage.

TL;DR: I Fucked Up
Burusutazu replied to steezemageeze's topic in Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows
I would read up on Fedoras package manager so you can easily install software like on Debian. Debian/Ubuntu use apt, and I beleive Fedora uses DNF. https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Dnf -

I use my extra pc as a Linux tester, but not everyone is into linux. -
Recommend me a distro
Burusutazu replied to steezemageeze's topic in Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows
Never heard of Chapeau, a quick look and it seems both are based on Fedora. The biggest difference is that Korora has their own theme, but Chapeau seems to have more pre-installed software. It comes down to how comfortable are you installing software, and which one you think looks better. -

Try Korora, it's based on Fedora and has a beautiful UI that also has a Gnome selection. https://kororaproject.org/discover/gnome -

Using a 5 year old PC is really sad according to Apple
Burusutazu replied to Sevilla's topic in Tech News
Buying a new computer that has comparable specs to my current one is too expensive, not to mention what a waste it is not to get the full life out of what you buy. (usable not literal) -
I never use a screen protector on my Moto X (2nd gen) unless im going to the beach, then I slip on a cheap screen protector from Amazon.

This is not a laptop competitor. This is a small form factor pc, which is more powerful then most other desktops you can buy or build in this form factor. The people who buy this know very well that the cpu cannot be upgraded. Also, from what I understand thunderbolt 3 does not bottleneck graphics cards the drivers are what need to improve.

Looks pretty good to me, the HDD is only 5400rpm so it's going to be what holds the system back. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/dell-inspiron-15-6-touch-screen-laptop-intel-core-i3-6gb-memory-1tb-hard-drive-black/4815400.p?id=bb4815400&skuId=4815400 -
What Linux distro to use?
Burusutazu replied to aneil1998's topic in Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows
I use Ubuntu Gnome on both my laptop and desktop, but I have plans to return to Unity or to Elementary when Loki releases. It really comes down to looking around, testing the waters of a good variety of them and settling down on one that gives you a good impression. -
The funny thing about this is the fact that implementing uefi support costs nothing at all and only requires the distro to sign their isos with a uefi supported key. I have never heard of Canonical paying to get uefi keys. Now if this is about the Microsoft tax on companies that offer alternatives to Windows then totally this is a thing. The company that created and maintains Ubuntu. Ran by Mark Shuttleworth.

There is absolutely a reason, support. This laptop comes with guarenteed parts and support from Dell on issues. Why do you think companies like System76 are still up and running? And why Dell has sold these Ubuntu laptops for years now? You have to search for this laptop, it won't show up otherwise.

Probably the cheapest office PC you can get honestly. Especially since it can run a full version of Ubuntu Mate. You could probably make a pretty good NAS with it too.
