    So a progress update.

    Alot of work done

I decided to scrap the idea of putting an aluminium block alongside my copper and nickel, so the water cooling section of the mosfets and chipset, so i went for an EK Block

A few screws for the backplate

    The naked beauty...
Out with the old and in with the new.

I mounted the motherboard and placed a few fittings on, added the cpu block

Those with a keen eye will notice that i had to move the res, forgot to think about rad push pull clearance....

After mounting the rads in the top with a 480 and another 480 in the basement with a 240 next to the power supply.

Decided to go ahead and put the ek terminal on the graphics cards now for some test fits.

Time to do some test layouts in the case and figure how the hell i get water through the rig....

Got a bit carried away and did the whole tubing... a few bits I will change after the drain.

    Setting up the leak test

So after filling the loop, the 6 hour wait begins....

I will post back tomorrow with the hopeful end result.

Last week I promised a small build log of a keyboard since a friend had just bought one off of me and wanted a few modifications, well here it is. Also sorry about the dim under exposed pictures I actually had really good lighting but my LCD screen somehow got set to one step brighter than it should have so I got my exposure off.
If you have any questions ask away and ill do my best to answer.
    1) This is the PCB that every thing will be built off of. It is a Filco TKL v1.2 and has been taken from a older Filco which youll find out is important later.

    ____________________________________________________________________________________________
    2) Here is the plate which is also from the salvaged Filco as without the bent edges it doesnt properly fit the case. This Filco seemed to have gotten a bunch of use so the top of the plate was sanded and painted to clean it up and better match the build.

    ____________________________________________________________________________________________
    3) Here we have the 87 Green switches that are going to be used for this build that my friends selected. He choose them because he was looking at blues but I mentioned I may have some greens and he was willing to pay the additional upcharge.

    ____________________________________________________________________________________________
    4) Here are the initial switches going in. It is important to only put a few in initially and spread them across the board so that you get the PCB flush on the switches and flat in relations to the plate. Doing to many in one area will pull the PCB tight in one area before its secured in another. Also if you put them all in the plate your going to run into align it with the PCB in one go. I also included some cool pics that I snapped when my friend was checking to make sure they were all soldered.

    ____________________________________________________________________________________________
    5) I didnt happen to have any MX Grey Clicky (nor have I ever) for the spacebar and esc (esc is not standard but my preference). So I grabbed some extra clear spring I had and swapped them in. I took some close up pictures of the process because I dont think many of you have seen the inside of a switch much less taken one apart yourself. in the last picture I compare the green spring versus the clear one. The green on is the on the left with the green stem above it.

    ____________________________________________________________________________________________
    6) Here are all of the switches soldered in. They are not the best but not bad at all, especially for my friend who had not soldered a keyboard in over a year.

    ____________________________________________________________________________________________
    7) Now here is the part that makes this "The HID Liberator". The standard Filco TKL controller has been swapped for a HID Liberation device which makes this keyboard fully programmable. This daughter board was designed after the Phantom as a much cheaper way to bring programability to the very popular Filco TKL chassis. Earlier I mentioned that the revision of the PCB mattered as this has been designed for and tested on the 1.1 and 1.2 PCB's as the traces had to be mapped to make this work correctly. If you look closely I had to clip the corners of the controller. This is because the aluminum case has a very tight fit and wouldnt close otherwise. This is likly because it was designed off of the filco case or possibly some restriction working with metal vs plastic.

    ____________________________________________________________________________________________
    8) Finally here is the red milled aluminum case that the internals are going to be wrapped up in. It is a original Vortex aluminum Filco case (pre color availability and actually came raw) that has been anodized in a quite stunning red. Cabinet liner has been added to the inside to tighten up the fit just that much more and to stop sounds from resonating.

    ____________________________________________________________________________________________
    9) Finally here is the last update! The keyboard has been completed and tested. The new caps are the majority and are a red on white PBT double shot set. The silver aluminum spacebar is also new bit the F row and Alt's have been pulled from his previous board, as have the WASD 40A-R orings in red (that you cant see). The red orings are from before they were made in blue and just needed a nice cleaning before being reused.

You want to do something like this, assuming you want to print to a single line
import timeimport sysfor currentChar in "I have been waiting for you": sys.stdout.write(currentChar) time.sleep(.05) sys.stdout.flush()

If you and your friends would never spend this much money on a computer, that's fine, but that certainly doesn't apply to this community as a whole.  If this thread was about a gaming rig with Tri-SLI 780s and custom water cooling and case modding, most of the community would be drooling.  I mean just look at PBaines's desk build, which probably cost multiple times what this build here cost.

And again, why is the OP stupid because his system doesn't line up with your ideals?  You dismissing the OP's rig as irrelevant is no better than console gamers dismissing PCs as irrelevant.  If you don't like the feeling of your investments and hobbies being insulted, why reciprocate that?

And in what way does the build not suit the need?  Virtual machines and video production (the OP may not speak perfect English, but this was pretty clear).  Anyone running multiple virtual machines is going to want some fast storage, and video rendering is one of the few areas in which sequential write speeds matter.  It may not be optimal - a 2011 processor would suit video production better, and the RAM won't run at rated speeds - but imperfect does not equal stupid.

In general, I'm not so concerned about the criticism, but more about the classless way in which the criticism was delivered.  Everyone is so quick to call this a "waste of money" and insist the OP "should have bought x and y" instead of actually making an effort to help the OP design a better system around the massive storage array.  This isn't everyone, of course, and a few of the members here are genuinely trying to be helpful.  But as a whole this thread delivers a terrible impression of the community to the OP.  Hell, if one of my first posts on this forum received such flame-fanning reactions, I'd be gone.

Tech Things You Dont Know But Are Too Afraid To Ask

So, everyone has one or two things that they dont know and are to afraid to ask because they think it will make them look dumb.
So, what are yours? Post them here and hopefully someone will help you out, maybe even link you an article that helped them, maybe Linus and or slick can address it in the live stream, maybe linus and slick have something they dont know. As i said before Everyone has something they dont know and I think we need to learn more than we know already and what better community to do that in that this one?

So post what you dont know and maybe someone will tell you and If someone posted something that you where wondering too dont repost unless you still dont understand or need more questions answered.

    My Questions:

What are RAM timings and why are they important?

What exactly is cas latency? and what does it affect?

How do you know what voltage to set your CPU at when overclocking?

    How do you overclock RAM?

So post away and remember no question is a stupid question.

+1. Posting progress pics is kinda the point of a build log. Not everybody can have
fancy cameras and/or perfect lighting, and that's ok.

Here is a pic of the backside:

I've taken some more pics while building it, but their quality isn't that good (bad lightning & phone cam :<).
But I can post it if you are interested.

    Yeah, a kindred spirit! :)
The Umnumzaan has been my EDC for the past few years and I really love it, it's just an amazing
piece of workmanship (albeit ridiculously expensive). Even after several years of use, the lock
and hinge on the Umnumzaan are still in excellent shape, no wobble at all. I also have an Extrema
Ratio MPC for the heavier work when I do outdoorsy stuff (built like a bloody tank).
I do need to get a replacement thumb stub for the Umnumzaan though, one of them has fallen out
and been lost (the knife still works, but it's not ideal of course).
    Thanks! :)

Hey alpenwasser. I just have to mention the Chris Reeve Umnumzaan in your first picture. Knifes and computers is a rare combination but I'm into those two things as well. Also your build is kinda awesome so I'm really looking forward to the finished product !!!!
