  2. Have been wanting to rebuild for X99 for ages, this would be an awesome head start! Multitasking ftw! Good luck all
  3. airdeano is right, mine was laing branded. Its the DDC design in general that failed here, not the manufacturer or reseller. Haha thanks, yeah well I had to be up and running right away, so I found a way. Mine was actually right behind my front intake fan, but I think having it sitting on dampening foam was not great for keeping it cool.
  4. I've seen something like that before but never though about using it myself. Looks like I should have... My new pump is a d5 (xspc d5 photon 170 pmup/res combo). I'm glad to get away form the ddc as it was loud too... I'm installing the new pump right now actually
  5. I've been in contact with the manufacturer, looks like I'll be sending them the pump so they can inspect it to see if there was some fault. The pump is 2.5 years old though and out of warranty so I'm not fussed about getting a replacement, but I wont complain if they give me one!
  6. Hi guys, a short story for you; Last week I took my desktop with me to do some on site web development in a town a few hours away. I've hauled my desktop around with me a lot in the last few years (having been at university) so I had no problems packing it or during the trip. After I got there I promptly set up my computer and screens and turned it on, then went into a meeting. (a note; my pump is a DDC with and EK x-res top) About half an hour later (still in the meeting) we noticed an electrical / plastic burning smell. We search around for a few minutes and narrowed it down to near my computer. The smell seemed to be stronger down near my computer to I pulled off my side panel just in time to see a plume of smoke shoot out of the side of the pump! I quickly ripped out the power cable and then everything else and grabbed my case, rushing to a table outside. With the side panel still off, more smoke was coming from the pump. Luckily I had a drain valve installed, so I opened it up and just let the water run out onto the table outside. I ran back inside looking for something to get the pump out of my system (now smoking even more furiously). I spotted a kitchen knife, grabbed it and ran back outside. The knife was surprisingly sharp so it didn't take much to cut through the tubing either side of the pump. The pump was secured to the case with double sided foam tape so I just grabbed onto the res, tore it out of the case and threw it into the back yard. After another couple of minutes the pump had stopped smoking, so I went over to it to inspect; The base of the pump case was melted a bit (you can also see some smoke in the top right of the photo below). I then opened up the pump case. Close up of the area that was burning. Case; Pump; I needed to get back up and running asap and as there was no local pc shops, closest one was 5 hours drive away, I decided to head down to the hardware store and grab a pond pump and some more distilled water. I got both for $40 which was cheaper than I thought. As pond pumps usually require being submerged, I filled a container outside the case with the water and attached the pump. Although there was not much flow it worked very well. The bottles in the container are filled with tap water and are there to raise the level of the distilled water above the top of the pond pump. Edit: I forgot to say that luckily everything else survived. So has anyone else had something like this happen to them? PS. New pump is here so the re-build log coming soon... Cheers Charlie
  7. Favourite part: buttons on the back, I tried the G2 and loved it!
  8. I'm pretty sure the UP2414Q I linked in the original post is IPS.
  9. Oh, I didn't realise the Samsung wasn't vesa compatible, thanks for bringing that to my attention. I haven't looked at any viewsonic monitors at all, the VP2772 you linked looks great. Having a quick look at some reviews it seems to be excellent. I am very tempted to go for that option, I just dont know if I will resent not getting 27" if someone brings one out.
  10. Thanks dizmo! I knew LG did consumer monitors, but wasn't aware they did pro grade too. I'm looking at their stuff right now and they seem to have 2 options that i would be interested in; Both 27" 1140p; 27A38 ($1199) and the 27A83R ($899). Of those I would go for the 27EA83R. But until I read some reviews of them I would prefer the Asus or Samsung options. I've been searching around for ages and can't seem to find a 27" 4k colour accurate one anywhere... No demand so no one has made one yet I suppose.
  11. Hi all, I've just posted this thread about what to upgrade and I've decided to get two new monitors, so I though I would post about it here, and close the other thread. I do very casual gaming so I'm no looking for a gaming monitor at all. My main work is programming, and with that I do some photo, video and sound editing. I have 2 - 2.5k to spend, I'm in Australia, and I'm not really sure what to get. I prefer colour accuracy over refresh rate, but I dont want a 30hz panel, I run a 7970 so have 2x Mini DP. I would even be happy to sell the 7970 and get something else so I could run 60hz 4k on both displays (not in games though). I'm also not sure whether to go 24" or 27" or 4k or 1440p? These are my options; I would ideally want 27" 4k colour accurate, something like the Dell UP2414Q ($1274) but 27". I can't find any 27" 4k displays that are colour accurate though. I think my second choice would be to go with the Dell UP2414Q and a nice stand like the SilverStone ARM22SC ($259). My third choice would be to go with a 27" 1440p, probably the Asus PA279Q (1089) or the Samsung S27B970D ($979). So what does everyone else think? Does anyone know of any colour accurate 27" 4k displays? What option do you think I should go with, keep in mind that I don't care about gaming at 4k at all, but I would much prefer a 60hz panel over 30hz. Cheers Charlie
  12. Thanks for the suggestion Student, I'll look into a nas some more soon but at the moment I think I've decided that I want to go for some new monitors. creativename, I have been looking at the Asus PA279Q, I dont think its quite what I'm looking for though. I'm going to create a new topic in Displays to try and figure out what to get. - Charlie
  13. I do nearly no gaming, so 120hz dosent really interest me, I actually have another 128gb 840 Pro that I'm yet to install as I dont really need it at the moment, so was thinking about selling in on. Haha yeah, I really do want some new monitors, I think that that is what will probably come of this . Do you have any suggestions on 1440 / 4k in the 1000 - 1200 range. I would prefer colour accuracy over pretty much everything else. 60hz is a must though.
  14. Hi all, I've been wanting to upgrade some things for a while but I'm really not sure what to do. I have a few options in mind. I would like to get a smaller case (possibly matx which means new mb, and probably cpu too) or maybe build / buy a nas or some new monitors, I've been wanting new ones for ages. I don't want/need to do all of these things right now, I'm happy to do just one, if it makes my experience better. My current setup is; System 2600k @ 4GHz 16gb Corsair Vengence ASRock Extreme7 (Z68) 128gb 840 Pro 2TB WD Green 1.5TB WD Green Essence STX 7970 AX850 Bitfenix Shinobi Loop Watercool Heatkiller CPU Block Watercool Heatkiller GPU Block XSPC AX360 Rad Laing DDC Pump with EK Res top Desk Ducky Shine 3 Year of the Snake Mech Keyboard (Cherry Brown) Aluminium Ducky Leather Wrist Rest Logitech G9x Corsair SP2500 Audio-Technica ATH-AD700 Zalman ZM-MIC1 Lav Mic 2x LG W2343T (sh*t old monitors in other words) More on the upgrade options I have in mind; Smaller Case I really like the idea of a smaller case and going matx, which If I were to do I would need to get a new MB and probably CPU as I'm still on Z68. I love the look of simple sleek cases, I can't stand things like the Haf series. I would like to fit all of my current watercooling stuff in there (I dont mind if I have to get a new rad though, maybe a thicker 240 or a 280). NAS / More Storage I am running out of space and I do think I need a more reliable storage solution, I currently just have a couple of drives. I would prefer to build a NAS over buying one, but it must be very low power (is WOL a possibility?). I am also happy to just get some more drives for the moment and move them to a nas later. Monitors I've had the same two crappy 1080p TN panels for over 4 years now, and I'm sick of them. I think that this is probably what I would most like to upgrade as it would be most noticeable. I would like to go 4k if I could find some 24" colour accurate(ish) ones at a reasonable price, otherwise 1440p would be good (max 1000 - 1200 each, I haven't seen anything 4k around this price). I would also get a stand, perhaps the Silverstone ARM22SC that linus just reviewed. 1. Budget & Location $2k, possibily more, Australia 2. Aim I just want a better overall experience (I know that not a very good answer, but that is pretty much it). Currently this system is used for; Web design and developmentA lot of code Some photoshop A small amount of video and sound Run a local server for dev work Very casual gaming, mostly will try out stuff on humble bundles and upcoming indie dev games, but like to have graphics on max 3. Monitors I two sh*tty old TN things that I want to get rid of. 4. Peripherals Got all I need. 5. Why are you upgrading? I want a change, its fun getting new things and I'm sick of what I have. So what I want to know is, what does everyone think I should do? What to upgrade and suggestions on components/products? Cheers Charlie And some pics of current setup (phone... sorry);
