Also ngl, kinda felt the need to post this as a reaction to @VegetableStu's status update about a wallet prototype.

Call me a Gen Z(er) BOOMER but I actually wouldn't mind a dedicated thin and light electronic device in a phone form factor, substantially thinner and lighter, basically a device used exclusively for mobile payments which uses open source code and OS, and is a Corporation neutral approach and supports all digital payment methods including bitcoin, and you use it just like Apple Pay or Google Pay. No privacy issues or tracking BS.

So basically I'm thinking a Galaxy Alpha type of form factor device, running custom Linux or custom Android supporting a custom mobile payment system using NFC etc, and lock it down to only support acting as a dedicated wallet device and make sure it gets updates for 5-6 years. Make the screen Plastic OLED with no glass so that it doesn't need fixing much. And make the MSRP $199.

I'd actually buy that. Especially if running custom Linux.

And yes I know I just described the Pine Phone minus the software and mobile payment system parts that would be required.

That would be a great wallet replacement for 2020 2030 since in the UK at least a large amount of businesses accepting cash have added support for card and mobile payments.

@Pascal... No not a physical card. A physical card when used contactlessly is less secure than a mobile payment made contactlessly.

A mobile payment can also be made above £45 vs £45 limit on a physical card's contactless feature.

Not to mention PINs are annoying to remember and you can just use fingerprint to authorize a mobile payment.
