But why don't you host it yourself if it's only for a couple friends? Doesn't Minecraft even have this feature natively?

Yes. We tried hosting it ourselves but the latency was painful and also one of us has a CPU which can't handle hosting it and playing it at the same time.

Cos we're doing modded stuff it requires more resources than vanilla

I use my file server for it. Works fine. Run dynmap. 1.13 and 1.14 are just trash for lag though, if you're having problems consider an older version, most servers haven't switched for a reason

A lot of servers haven't switched because the modding community beyond 1.7 is not as big as it was before 1.7 . A lot of modmakers either quit because of their opinions of Microsoft or otherwise.

Also, it's not exactly super easy to make mods because, despite Mojang's alleged commitment to creatingmod api/plugin api, their primary focus is on Bedrock Edition with micro-transactions and recurring revenue although PC also recurring revenue through Realms. Unfortunately, Bedrock Edition has become too much of a cash cow with it's marketplace.

Java Edition used to be the main focus but now Bedrock edition is the main focus with Java Edition still around to please the more serious and less casual players.
