DigitalHermit reacted to zMeul in simple analysis of World of Tanks API switch from DX9 to DX11
about a week ago, popular multiplayer team based tank shooter, WoT, got an engine upgrade that switched from a DX9 render path to DX11
I took a quick look of the performance changes gained (or lost) from this engine upgrade

    system specs:
    Intel Q9550 2.83Ghz 8GB DDR2 GTX970 G1 from GigaByte W7 x64 GeForce 365.19 drivers game settings:
resolution - 1080p maximum detail preset 3D render resolution - 100% dynamic settings - off AA - off tests were conducted in the battle training tutorial - yes, I know that might not representative of actual live gameplay, but having a similar run after game patch is not possible

    CPU usage with DX9:

    CPU usage with DX11:

while there is a lower usage of core 0 and 1 in DX11, the overall CPU usage across all cores is negligible:

let's move the the graphics performance starting with GPU% utilization:

on average, WoT's DX11 API implementation shows aprox 20% increase in GPU usage over DX9

and the most important part, framerate:

DX11 render gains roughly 34 FPS average over DX9 and ~40FPS gain in minimum FPS:

the solid gains in minimum FPS that DX11 render offers are quite substantial and welcomed; it makes for a much smoother play experience

DigitalHermit reacted to iamdarkyoshi in iamdarkyoshi's Substantially Less Deadly Powerbank Capacity Tester
So I made this... thing... a while ago.
    http://www.eevblog.com/forum/chat/iamdarkyoshi's-highly-dangerous-(but-extremely-simple)-powerbank-capacity-tester/
    https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/602435-iamdarkyoshis-highly-dangerous-but-extremely-simple-powerbank-capacity-tester/

And then I had an idea. My bench supply counts mAh. Why don't I just discharge the damn powerbank and then charge it with my bench supply? Then I can very precisely measure the capacity without dealing with the output converter circuitry in the powerbank.

    So here is the setup:

I made a very chunky USB lead that can handle over 2A without dropping much voltage. My new powerbank (my white 5 cell one) can charge at over 2A perfectly fine with this cable. I set the voltage to 5v and the current limit to 1.5A. I know this particular powerbank only charges at 1A.

So I plug the discharged powerbank into it

And I watch the numbers rise.

See that value in the bottom right? That is how many mAh I have put in so far. Once the powerbank finishes, I will know its capacity.

I could also use this to check my tablet and phone, provided I discharge them first and leave them switched off (as leaving them running will draw power, which would be measured)

The powerbank listed here is from BayValleyParts on ebay. The one I bought is out of stock. http://www.ebay.com/itm/131497508451
The bench supply can be found here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/DC-DC-Programmable-Switching-Power-supply-60V-5A-300W-/231579926529
Not sponsored by either of these sellers.

Anyway, I should have results in about 10 hours or so...

Well, I don't know how uni body cars work, but I'm assuming the Lynx is uni body and not body on frame, so if you can put the jack where ever you want, slap it in the middle of the car, Jack up one side, pull off both tires, and move the back to the front. If you can't do that and can only jack one corner at a time, you can jack up the rear, pull the rear tire off, put the spare doughnut on, go to the front, pull the front tire and replace it with the rear, then trade the rear doughnut with the front tire, then take the doughnut and do the same thing on the other side. Not being able to Jack up one whole side creates a lot of work.

I've done the whole side thing before and it's a little sketchy but honestly if you're not crawling under the thing you don't really need axle stands even though they're a super big convince

on all of our cars, which are unibody cars, they have certain jack stand points, so as not to damage anything.

sorry for just vanishing off of the face of the earth but i return with some good news!
i went to japan and won a 1969 nissan skyline pgc10 at a japanese car auction and i bought an rb26dett (going to do a swap to make the car easier to drive as well as add some performance to it)
    here are some pictures:

(i know that the engine looks rough but i will give it a full rebuild, the complete engine and transmission was "only" 3500 us dollars so it is worth a shot)
and last but not least, my beutiful 1969 pgc10!

Ps: if you go to japan to buy a legendary engine, pick`n pull yards are great places to look!

im getting a miata one way or another. I've only driven one car so far (the nice one). Best car i've ever driven and I fit in one perfectly (an NB anyway). I am going look at the cheap one today. decision will be made around 4-5pm today.

quite exciting to know I will probably have a miata of my very own in the driveway this evening.

of course. Have you not seen me take care of my corolla over the years? haha. I like to keep my cars as perfect as possible, even though it aggravates my parents since im so picky lol

I don't like the ND as much either. It's smaller than the NC, but the skyactiv engine ruined it for me, isn't as simple as throwing on a turbo anymore if you want more power and expect to have a reliable car.

The left hand side is really messy so i will get a picture when he gets that cleaned up but the right hand side is next to empty and just has the 8c in it. sorry for the bad quality i tried to touch it up a bit but he just took it with his phone.

this is why i lock my room when mine comes. ive got like 4 monitors and all this shit that has to be cleaned specific ways. last time i let her in she tried to clean the inside of one of my servers.. WITH WINDEX!!!! SAYING IT WAS GOOD FOR ELECTRONICS!!!!!!!!! WHAT THE FUCK! thank god there was just an old motherboard in there at the time. which was broken beforehand. otherwise i would have really flipped shit.on the newly cleaned floors. i explained it to her and she didnt do it again but after that i clean my own room. i dont trust people to clean my shit.

Then there was the week i was paranoid (this was a week after the server incident) because i had a bunch of bare components on my desk while i was building the server. ... that was a stressful week
