In general for unmanaged switches... no. There is nothing as a dedicated "uplink" port. All traffic needs to get everywhere. The switch doesn't care if two of your lan devices are communicating with each other or one lan device is communicating with the router, which "forwards" the traffic to a server.

There are switches where some ports can be faster than others. But that is mostly not the case in normal consumer devices ("8-port ethernet switch" sounds like a standarrd switch).

You will need a wireless card, this board does not have onboard wifi

You can try ZeroTier. ZeroTier is a peer-to-peer vpn that basically adds a virtual network interface to every device that you need to interconnect. It uses "udp-hole punching" so there is no need to setup port forwards.

You just need to create a free account and install a small software on every device. Your devices will find each other through their servers. But the actual data is transmitted directly between your devices.

I havent tried Zerotier in double-NAT enviornments, but it worked very well for me in the past.

Knonf reacted to Pesukarhu in How can I use my laptop speakers to play phone audio
Plug the phone into the laptops line in or mic port, if the laptop has a combo jack you will need an adapter. You can use a 3,5mm audio cable (male to male). If you dont have a microphone/line in port on your laptop at all, you can get a cheap USB soundcard (couple bucks on eBay) and use that instead.

After you have connected the phone go to windows sound manager (right click the speaker icon in taskbar -> recording devices), select the device your phone audio is coming through -> properties -> listen to this device

If the audio is low make sure the headphone volume on your phone is at max.

To be honest, you're best getting a decent audio headset and then using an Antlion ModMic. Most gaming headsets are really quite poor and have a premium on them by their nature of being marketed for gamers.

    I recommend AudioTechnica ATH-M50X.

You might need to go into the sound settings and set the headphone as the default audio device.

7.1 headphones are a gimmick and marketing bs. There is no reason to have more than 2 channels for headphones

    what amp do you have?

Just use the red and white. With stereo, music and games use phase changes to make it sound like the sound if comming from different locations.

Went a bit over budget but I see no point in your build going Z97 for an i3. H Chipset is fine for an locked cpu.

Maybe you want to take a look at this.

If you are getting him an i3, no need really for z series board. Why not go with an H? They are a little cheaper and anyways.

As of now, I think this is your suggestions? Do you want us to try and help you build a PC for around the 300-400 mark?

If so, I'm sure some people will help you out

Then you should be fine. Just make sure you configure your RAID setup as expandable, otherwise you would have to backup all data, configure new RAID array and then restore all data on it.   Captain_WD.

Hey chris3196,   The parts list looks good. The memory and the CPU should be enough to cover your needs. WD Red are great drives for NAS/RAID environments. How many drives are you planning on putting in the future (since you mentioned 6 SATA ports)? Also what type of RAID are you going for?   I would suggest switching the USB stick with a small SSD to handle your OS and have it plugged in internally to avoid accidentally removing the OS storage device.    Captain_WD.

Are you ever planning to expand beyond the 2 HDDs in your NAS?  If not, are you going to mirror them or just roll the dice on availability with your data?  For this small (capacity) of a NAS I don't think ECC memory is worth it.  Are you planning to use ZFS under FreeNAS?

What about the SilverStone DS380B for a case?

I prefer HGST drives over WD but that could be its own debate.  I opted for the HGST 4TB NAS 7200 RPM drives in my current new NAS I built.

i have a Western Digital Elenements HDD 3tb external. i find the fact that i have to use USB ports and a connection on my power output to use it, so i removed the plastic case like in the video i linked at the bottom (i have not removed the logic/control board). placed it in my case and connected it, but my computer cannot find it. i can feel on the HDD that the disk are spinning but it can't be found whatsoever not even in disk management. the HDD itself is model wd30ezrx

It's a bit difficult. There are 3 cases:

    1) Some apps are designed for ipad AND iphone/ipod touch. So you can use them on ipad and iphone at same time, if you are logged in with the same apple ID on both devices.
    2) Other apps (for example "tweet bot") have a specific iphone and a  specific ipad version. So you have to buy both versions to use the app on both devices. ( The ipad app appears in the app-store often as "HD" Version.)
    3) A lot of apps are only available for iphone OR ipad. - If it is only available for iphone you can use the scaled-up iphone app on your ipad.

Can we have a brief youtube video show up before people make polls on this site?

I can count on my fingers the amount of times I've seen a correctly done poll.

This already looks polarized (ba-dum tss) by having two practically "yes" options and a "no, lolkek" option

why does nobody know how to make a poll ffs
all this is short of is a potato option and it's a typical poll I find here, next to useless.
