Status on the 3D printed split 60% keyboard:

  • A very simple 3x4 key macro pad has been printed out. This will be the proof of concept. I will make sure I know how to make the keyboard matrix, and I will check how QMK works. The switches will be the Cherry MX Blues I desoldered from my G710. The other parts will be shared with the 60%. $0,00
  • The diodes and the stabilisers have arrived. €1,00, £6,99
  • Two Pro Micros have been ordered. 2x $3,76
  • A 4 key Aliaz switch tester has been ordered. This will let me get a rough idea of the different weights, and the noise. $4,00 + $5,00 shipping
  • An HDMI cable has been ordered. This will be to connect the two halves together. £1,29
  • The keycaps from a spare G710 will be used for most of the keys.

Parts that have yet to be 3D-printed:

  • The 60% case
  • OEM profile keycaps for the ones that won't work from the G710

The only parts that hasn't been ordered yet are the switches, some foam, some sorbothane, some lube, and some paint and primer.

The total cost so far has been $28,50 (according to Google's currency calculator). The switches will add another $37, and the paint, primer and clear coat will probably be another ~$36 (might not get these). That's for the keyboard itself. For the silencing, the foam will be ~£6, and the sorbothane will be ~$16. I will probably buy the sorbothane later, if I decide that I want to silence it more.

The total cost without the painting supplies and sorbothane will be about $75. That's fairly reasonable, imo.

    That's one comfy cat. ❤️

Also, how durable will the 3D printed case will be? 3D printed stuff is new to me.

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    It's new to me too.

Should be fairly sturdy, as long as the infill is appropriately high. And it's just a keyboard, so it should sit on a desk when I'm using it.

It's not my design, I found it on Thingiverse. Here are the links to Thingiverse and the creator's Geekhack thread.

And I'm planning to wire it up like this.

The switches are just mounted to the case. It serves as a plate.
