Today is the 11th of November 2018. This marks exactly 100 years since the ceasefire that ended the First World War. The agreement was signed at a little past 5am, on the 11th of November 1918, and the hostilities were to end 6 hours later. Meaning, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month 1918. 11:00 11.11.1918.

This was the war to end all wars, it was supposed to be so horrible that another one wouldn't happen. This was wrong, as just over 20 years later, Germany invaded Poland.

I have only ever remembered a single poem by heart, ever, and it's called "In Flanders Fields".

It was written during the war, and it's the origin of the remembrance poppy. The poppy was the only thing that was able to grow in no man's land, in Flanders Fields.

Here's the first two verses of the poem, copied from Wikipedia.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders fields.

However much we enjoy entertainment based on war, we must remember that actual war is always a bad thing. And here's some videos about WW1.
