  1. I have also been slightly nervous about motherboards because as I was browsing it seems like a lot of 1151 motherboards have reviews sayings they have been DOA or have died shortly after etc. As well as issues with memory and various things on the boards being defective. Are there more issues than usual with 1151 motherboards?
  2. Hey again everyone. I have always enjoyed PC hardware and doing builds for myself and others. I have done quite a few different builds in the past. My last couple builds have been documented on here. Most of my builds have been based around fairly standard mid or full tower chassis, with the exception being my personal system from last year which was based in a Silverstone SG08 cube case. I enjoyed my little Silverstone cube PC and I think the small form factor concept is interesting. I have always been intrigued by Lian Li, even when I was very young. So I decided that this time I will build a system based on a Lian Li chassis. I looked at what they have to offer and a few of their newer cases caught my eye. The PC-Q37 tempered glass mini ITX case is appealing to me, since it combines the "cube" form factor that enjoy with "dual chamber" which I also like since it will enable some nice cable management (if anyone saw my corsair 650 you will know that I also enjoy meticulous cable management). The only thing that I don't like about the Q37 is that it only accepts SFX and SFX-L power supplies. Then I started looking at the PC-08, another dual chamber glass cube but this supports ATX motherboards and PSUs. and when I looked at the dimensions it isn't actually THAT huge (about 16.8 inches tall). I also think case is even nicer looking than the Q37 in some ways because the entire front is glass and there are 3 fans that sit behind the glass at the front which I think looks really nice. and it has some LED strips and a controller. I have mixed feelings about LEDs in PC builds but I think for something like this it really is nice for lighting up what you have in there. Drawbacks of these glass cases are dust build up, fingerprints, they are breakable and heavy. and fairly expensive. Although I am prepared to pay a premium for quality in this build because I want something really nice. Then I considered a third option which would be something extremely minimal and understated with no windows, LEDs, no IO of any kind at the front. Just plain aluminum with powerful hardware inside. I took a look at Lian Li's offerings that fit this and I found a couple products that fit. The Q25 is a tiny mini ITX case from a few years ago thats very plain, but I decided that this was a little too small for what I wanted this time. Then I saw the M25 which is a similar layout, but for micro-ATX and it is a bit larger so it has some more room inside. Now both of these cases seem to be designed for use in NAS/server type applications because they both have a bunch of hard drive bays with hot swap bays. But I don't care about that too much because there is no window in the M25 so it doesn't matter too much what the layout is inside. I feel I could build a really nice high end system in the M25 and the fact that it is so minimal is appealing to me. So I have not decided what case I will go with for this build yet. Any opinions are welcome. On the one hand I like the idea of being able to see all my hardware but I can also picture the thing loaded with dust and then it won't be so beautiful anymore. The minimal no window design is also appealing to me. Any options on this are welcome. The Q37 is not available yet but I hear it will be available around Oct 24. The M25 is available but only in black, and the silver is the one I would really like, but I would go for black. This will probably serve as my main home system so I am going to put some good hardware in it. I have one Dell P2715Q 4K monitor right now, which I got for really cheap at an auction a couple months ago, so I would like to be able to run games at a playable framerate in 4K. My 970 that I had would play all games in 4K at high detail settings but the FPS would drop pretty low in some cases. I plan to put a 1070 in this system but maybe even a 1080? Here is what I have in mind for hardware. these things may change a bit depending on the case. Intel 6700K GTX 1070 or 1080 -- I like the white cooler Asus 1070 "dual" 16GB of 2666mhz memory (maybe 32GB later) Kingston HyperX ASRock Z170M Extreme4 (if MicroATX) not 100% sure what I would get if ATX but I'm open to suggestions. I think the Gigabyte Z170X Designare is nice looking. Seasonic 660W Platinum PSU Samsung 850 EVO 500gb or 1tb
  3. thanks! i am really happy with how the small case worked out. this is pretty much a setup and forget thing for my - i only pay games a little bit and i just want something that will be ready to use whenever i feel like playing. i really like braided cables too but i am definitely not doing it myself.
  4. thanks for the info! i am leaning towards the dell just because i think it looks really nice and it is on sale right now.
  5. I have doing some thinking and some more looking and I think at this point I am looking at either the Asus PB278Q or the Dell U2715H. I think these are fairly similar specs wise. The Dell is reg $850 on the CA dell website, but it is on sale for $599 right now until July 31, and the Asus is on NCIX for $569 right now. In terms of looks I think I like the dell a bit better. it has a very slim bezel on the top and sides which looks really nice to me, plus it is black and silver which will match my Apple display a bit better, but I also think the Asus looks good. The Asus has a dual link DVI + display port which is fine for what I need, and the Dell has a mini display port and a full size display port which is also fine for what I need. Anyone have any reasons to go with one vs the other here?
  6. Hey guys! here is a video update. I'm shopping for a monitor and also a keyboard. I am most likely going to pick up a Filco Majestouch 2 Stealth.
  7. Oh okay, cool! thanks for the info. The PB278Q and the Dell 27" both look nice to me. I will have to think about it more and figure it out!
  8. I'm looking at the specs here https://www.asus.com/us/Monitors/PB278Q/specifications/ and it is saying PLS panel / In-Plane Switching? anyway it does look good. I dont really know how good/bad the scaling is with windows but Im not really opposed to trying it. Mainly I just want to try something that is larger thats why I was really interested in the BenQ.
  9. currently i have a 2012 retina 15" mbp GTX650 1GB /16gb mem. i may sell that and get a current gen mbp. hmm that is interesting? i would have thought they would support 10 bit... the other thing that is a priority is the stand has to be fairly nice and strong etc. I had a look at the PA 24" in the store the other day and the stand was really nice on that. the only thing that i dont like about that is the resolution and the size. thanks for the suggestions. the PB278Q does look pretty nice except I was hoping for an IPS. I was looking at the U2715H and i really like the look of it. the thin bezels look really nice and the stand looks great on that. I was also looking at the P2715Q too but the only thing is I am not sure if I want to go with a 27" 4K just because the pixel density might be a little too small to use without scaling and I kind of want a larger display like a 32" just for gaming and movies etc. no, it will be used mostly for photography and other things on the mac side. i have the gaming pc but i dont play games a lot. i am only looking at IPS monitors.
  10. Hey guys, I am looking for a second display (currently I have a single 27" Apple LED Cinema display for my mac). I will be using this display for my mac in addition to the cinema display, as well as a display for my gaming pc. Right now I am trying to decide between a very high quality 27" 1440p display (so this would match the resolution and size of my cinema display) like the Asus PA279Q, or a larger 4K IPS display like the BenQ BL3201. On the one hand I like the idea of having two nice monitors that are the same size and resolution (and the Mac will be able to run both of these at their native resolutions fairly easily), but on the other hand I also like the idea of having a larger 32" display with an even higher resolution (I have always wanted a 30"+ display). Right now I mainly use the PC for games and the Mac for most other things, so the 4K monitor would have to be scaled, but I may sell the Mac soon and upgrade it to a newer one that does support 4K resolutions. Any suggestions which way I should go here? Thanks!
  11. love it. i think the silver interior actually suits this.
  12. Sounds really good! hopefully we will see a thread about this soon! I'm planning on posting some benchmark screenshots from this build soon. I have also been doing some folding with this system for the Linus folding team. And I'm sure I will do a video on the case and the system soon as well.
  13. Wow this looks amazing! I will definitely look more shortly.
  14. thanks guys i think there was a little too much thermal paste on there the first time. when i added the 92mm fan i cleaned the cpu and the base of the cooler then reapplied a smaller drop of paste. not sure what makes the most difference the new paste or the 92mm but the 92mm does blow directly onto the CPU base area so it makes sense that it helps. it's not too loud, either. if you leave the fans on PWM they are practically silent most of the time. the curve for speeding them up as the temps go up is pretty mild. even with both fans at 100% its not bad. what kind of a case are you using for the new build? the be quiet looks nice. reminds of of a mix of the C12 and C14. cryorig looks good too. and you can't really go wrong with noctua.
  15. i was curious myself how the L12 would perform with the 92mm fan installed, so i went and added the fan. i had to remove to L12 to get the 92mm fan on since there was not enough space to get it on when it was installed, so I reapplied thermal paste while i had it off. here is OCCT temps at stock CPU settings with 1 fan and with both fans. stock settings 1fan by Andre Vautour, on Flickr stock settings 2fan by Andre Vautour, on Flickr i think it looks alright with the 92mm installed. the Y splitter fan cable does add extra length/bulk to the fan cables though Untitled by Andre Vautour, on Flickr
  16. hey, thanks! i was just wondering how it would be with the bottom fan. i will probably put it in to see how much difference it makes. 970 temps are okay. it usually is around 75-80 during gameplay. it will get to 85 if you run fur mark. update: temps for GPU are more like 70c in game now with the new CPU cooler
  17. My Noctua NH-L112 arrived! here's some pictures from the installation process. Out of the box it comes with the 92mm and 120mm already installed. I decided to try it with just the 120mm first and see how the performance was, because I dont really want the 92mm. DSC05621 by Andre Vautour, on Flickr Noctua gives you a kit to install the cooler without the backplate, for miniITX MBs that don't support backplates, but i was able to install the normal Noctua backplate on this board. DSC05623 by Andre Vautour, on Flickr here it is setup for the way I was orignally planning on setting up the cooler, but as you will see that way did not really work out DSC05622 by Andre Vautour, on Flickr here is how much memory clearance there is. the memory shown here is patriot viper 3 and that is 41mm tall. Noctua says you have 43mm of memory clearance with this. I see about 5-6mm between the top of the memory heatsink and the fins of the cooler. DSC05624 by Andre Vautour, on Flickr if you install it this way you will get the most amount of space between the GPU and the cooler. DSC05627 by Andre Vautour, on Flickr but it also overhangs over the edge of the motherboard on the memory side. this is what caused an issue for me because this part of the cooler was too close to the PSU. DSC05629 by Andre Vautour, on Flickr here is my cables for the front panel buttons/LEDs. on the SG08 the reset switch is on the back, so if you want to connect that you will either have to find a nice way to route it, it just have an extra cable coming from the back. DSC05634 by Andre Vautour, on Flickr this is the way I ended up installing it. with the ends of the heatpipes facing down at the GPU. there is less space between the GPU and the cooler this way, but overall there is a more even amount of space on all sides of the cooler in the SG08. DSC05635 by Andre Vautour, on Flickr DSC05636 by Andre Vautour, on Flickr this is what i originally did with the restart cable from the back. i just routed it straight down the back of the GPU and then under the motherboard. for some reason I was thinking this might be too hot, so i changed it to routing along the bottom of the GPU instead of the top. DSC05640 by Andre Vautour, on Flickr So, here it is - a view from the top with the top fan removed. 18. hey guys, i have not installed a CPU cooler yet (i ordered an NH-L12 and it should be here on monday or tuesday) but i did spend some time tiding up the cables. i will have some better pictures of the entire build when i get the cooler installed and i think i will do a video talking about my experiences building in this case as well.
  19. hey guys, I am going to tidy up the cables a bit soon and install a CPU cooler, but for now heres a few pictures of the outside and grpahics card side of the case. and here is a video. i will probably do another better video when i get the cooler installed and cables tidied up.
  20. thanks, guys. I know what you mean with AIOs and small paces. I was just thinking about the the noctua l12 because it provides airflow to the motherboard, and the AIO does not. also i have always had good experiences with noctua quality and I've seen a few AIOs with annoying pump noises.
