LeChef reacted to will0hlep in AI Pause Called For By Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, and other tech leaders
I actually take a slightly different viewpoint. I believe the argument “we’re all going to lose our jobs” has been kinda correct in many occasions already. It’s just that when it has been correct previously, there has been the creation of lots of new jobs. I realise it’s kind of semantics, but it does better fit the pattern in some ways.

In the industrial revolution, the number of jobs for labourers, ect. dropped like stone. Almost everyone lost their jobs, but new (and better) jobs appeared.

when the computer became wide spread, the thousands of people employed as computers suddenly found their jobs were gone. But new (and better) jobs appeared.

That is the difference here: it’s coming for every job, even those that don’t exist yet (and not just some subset). The end game of AI research is building something that is multi purpose and efficient. Capable of outperforming a human at any task.

I’ve always believed that, since human’s are imperfect, anything we can do, something else can do better. I’m pretty certain it will happen. Until then all we can do is make sure the world is ready. (Like you say, universal basic income ect.)

LeChef reacted to LAwLz in Solid State Active Cooling at CES 2023 - innovation or a fancy gimmick?
Are you saying that the laws of thermodynamics does not allow for the claims this company makes to be true?
If so, can you please show the calculations using the laws of thermodynamics that disproves their claims?
Sorry for being pedantic but I don't like when people go "the laws of physics doesn't allow it", when the person saying this doesn't understand the laws of physics, nor have actually checked if said thing is possible or not.  "It's the laws of physics" is not an automatic "I win" statement unless you can actually prove that the laws of physics agrees.

Anyway, I feel like my knowledge regarding cooling is too limited to comment on how big of a deal this is. The "removes 10 watts of heating" at 1 watt of power doesn't sound that good, but at the same time I don't know how many "watts of power" various fans removes.
This company has apparently gotten investments from Intel and Qualcomm, so I assume that if those two companies believes in them then their product probably has a market.

I hope something good comes out of this. It seems like it has the potential to be a very big deal, but I have concerns about reliability over time (what if dusts gets into it?), performance (will it only be able to cool chips with 10 watt TDPs? If you add more to increase cooling, how does it scale? What's power consumption like compared to other coolers? Lots of questions waiting to be answered.

Ultimately it's everyone who participates and operates the network. They can essentially vote no to the charge and reject it and then Ethereum will stay as it is, PoW. Or they could split off as a subvariant Etherium coin still with PoW and try and use their influence to get everyone to use this instead of Ethereum PoS, which is actually rather unattractive to the masses as it's very costly to have the minimum 10 Eth coins to participate in the network and process transactions.

The developers and maintainers of Etherium can only propose changes, it's up to at least 50% of the network to agree to those, accept and install the Etherium software with the change in it.

    Without getting too political here...

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is himself under criminal indictment, and has been for years, on a felony fraud charge where he allegedly persuaded people to invest in a certain company without disclosing he would get paid from them doing so. It hasn't gone to trial yet because of fights over what court it should be heard in, etc.

So I am willing to believe Zuck and company got up to almost any kind of shit. But if Ken Paxton told me the sky was blue, I'd double-check to verify it. And I'm especially skeptical in this case because of the way many people from Paxton's party/faction have dishonestly targeted social media companies for their own cynical political ends in recent years.

For once, I hope the Internet does shift its massive rear-end and crushes NVIDIA on this. This kind of tactics of attempting to force reviewers to focus only on the things you approve of should not be allowed to pass and NVIDIA definitely would deserve to land in a torrent of hot water over this.

Alas, with the above in mind, I expect this will just be covered by LTT with...a brief mention in a Techlinked - episode and then forgotten about.

Not sure why this would make you smile. It's just another example of over-regulation. These laws are way too strict and unnecessary.

A company should be able to offer just about any product or service they want with a few stipulations such as the product being clear as to what it is and it not causing harm to anyone against their will or knowledge. It should be left up to the consumer to choose whether or not they support it. If you don't like loot boxes, then don't use them.

Gambling should be legal anyway. I'm an adult, if I want to play a game with loot boxes, I should have that right. The government shouldn't be stepping in because of parent's who can't parent and gamers who just want everything without having to take personal responsibility and deprive themselves of playing a game.

Basically brings FP32 to the tensor cores, sparse networks manipulations, sub-allocation of GPUs up to 7 sub-units, DGXs using AMD CPUs, and nvidia targeting the HPC networking marketing with their new Mellanox products.

Since I mostly care about those for compute-related workloads, both the improved tensor cores and GPU sub-allocation stuff is really nice for me, since it means that I'll be able to rent 1/7th of a A100 for cheap.

I wonder if it'll be possible to virtualize those sub-units, it'd be nice to have up to 7 VMs with nice virtual GPUs whilst having just a single GPU in your system.

For those wondering about gaming products, the A102 chip (which will probably be the new Titan/3080ti) should be about 70% of what the A100 has.

From JBL to Denon, Everyone these days makes and creates Bluetooth speakers and now.....IKEA as well?
Yes that's right, The same furniture store with confusing names and some times hard to follow instructions made a Bluetooth speaker.
Now for those who where in the know, IKEA did announce that they would be collaborating with a Swedish company called Teenage Engineering 2 years ago.
Now introducing the Frankenstein love child of a marriage that was never meant to be but turned out ok at the end : The FREKVENS
    A moduler type of speaker(s)
This is what i would consider as the '' big mama ''  :
Smaller version that i would consider as the regular portable in yellow:
    Comes in red too:

When you wanted smaller and extra portable:

Now This isn't just '' another speaker '' duuhhh, Whats so special?
Well, i'm glad  you asked, See, the IKEA-ishly named FREKVENS isn't just another Bluetooth speaker, Its a LINE of items that either compliment the speaker OR
IS a modular for you to attach to the speaker itself, Kinda like the AIAIAI TMA-2.

The whole picture of the line/ collection comprises of 27 modules, here is one picture of the collection:

Below are the individual pictures of the modules.

The LED multi  - use module that flashes and lights up according to the music or the animation:

A normal LED lamp that just bounces to the music, Turns on and off according to the bass or the kick

Whats that sparkie? It looks Dull? The red and the yellow ones?
Well good thing that IKEA has some MORE attachments to spice up the looks even more of the regular portable speaker:

    For the red one:

    For the yellow one:
Heck, there is ANOTHER LED module for the regular portable speaker:
Well, what about a stand for those speakers?

I'M SORRY, DID YOU SAY TRIPOD? ( LED lights and modules can be attached, Do not know about the speakers )

Now, there are more pictures and items in the same name as the speaker(s) but this post is getting long as it is and you can check the other items out in the links below.
Now time for you to meet one of the mad lads who is behind this:
