Kc7vwc reacted to Ottoman420 in Power Delivery Cable Only
there are many cables that dont support data and only charge.

but you can use a "data" usb cable to charge from a power brick or wall outlet with no risk of data being taken from your phone.

I belive android wont even activate the data side of the usb connection unless the phone is unlocked when connecting it to a pc so im not really sure what you are concered with.

    Welcome btw

Kc7vwc reacted to jaslion in Idea: Watercooled wireless charging.
Its because it keeps the battery healthy.

Cooling your phone whilst fast charhing does not help lessen battery wear much as the heat is still being generated inside the batteries core.

So simply put to keep a healthy battery you keep the amps low and have a bit of patience (like even a 5v 2a charger charges almost any phone in under 2 hours)

Kc7vwc reacted to ccnow in Will Samsung S23 prices fall when S24 is released in a few days?
The price will drop on trade ins and used sites quickly, but not super significantly. Retail outlets will likely still list them at MSRP until the new units are in stock.

For instance, I was shopping for a foldable, when the Z Flip5 was announced, Z Flip4 prices stayed the same at Best Buy. When the 5 hit shelves the 4 was discounted by $100-200. A few weeks later it went to -$300, then the week after Christmas they held a fire sale discounting the base Z Flip4 to $229 to get rid of the remaining inventory.

Keep in mind that the S23 is still an excellent phone, and retailers know that. They'll price it just right so that people who can afford the S24 will buy it, but those that can't will buy the S23. Don't expect a fire sale right away.

The app stores are weeding out apps that don't support newer OS. So this really is a non-issue for 99.999999999999% of users.

Isn't flash a huge security and resource issue? And that is when it still was supported many years ago.

Kc7vwc reacted to Commodus in Best time to buy a new phone is now...
I'll be honest: I don't think it's realistic to expect mobile OS developers and phone vendors to support apps and technologies nearly a decade old. So much has changed since then, and maintaining compatibility that far back is a technical nightmare.

Besides, Steve Jobs was right: mobile Flash was a performance hog, buggy and insecure. Obviously modern phones wouldn't have as much of a problem handling it, but there's a good reason Flash died and was replaced by a combination of HTML5 and native apps. Even Adobe urged people to move on years ago.

There's also a philosophical element here. If you insist on holding on to apps or features forever, you miss out on new apps and features you might really enjoy. You hurt yourself by refusing to let go. And I've seen this story play out before. The folks who refuse to buy a phone without old feature X or Y seldom get the industry to bend to their will — they just become That Person holding on to a dying seven-year-old phone, making themselves suffer while they wait for the change that never comes.

Sounds to me you are making a big deal out of something that isn’t. If you are using an application that was only complied for arm instead of arm & arm64 that means it’s hasnt gotten updated since 2014 and will most likely stop appearing on google play due to SDK limitations google introduces.

They did? I personally never saw someone who made that statement.

Kc7vwc reacted to Commodus in [CANADA] Is there any phones on plans with no notch/punchhole, an sd card slot, and a headphone jack?
To add to what dizmo said:

Part of why you don't like the bezelless design is the particular implementation on the Galaxy S9. It's curved at the edges, so you're more likely to brush the screen without a case and to have trouble reaching the edge when there is a case. Flat-screen phones like the Galaxy S22/S22+ (not the Ultra), iPhone 14 series and regular Pixel 6 tend not to have these problems.

On storage: while bumping up to a comfortable level of storage isn't always cheap, it's not hard to get a phone with, say, 256GB of space that can easily hold your music and most everything else. The days of needing a microSD card to keep up with storage needs are largely over.

You're not going to have great options for your exact criteria if you need a phone bought through a Canadian carrier. Their selections tend to be pretty similar outside of a handful of low-end models. And I'll be honest: I don't want you to be That Guy who holds on to an old phone (or buys a mediocre phone) because he's waiting for the industry change that never comes.

Instead of resisting all change, learn to adapt to it. You don't have to be thrilled with a camera cutout or a headphone dongle, but they're really not the end of the world, either. Until I went wireless, I just left an adapter connected to my favourite earbuds; I've long stopped caring about the notch on my iPhone 13 Pro, or the holepunch cam on my Pixel 6. This doesn't mean you should simply take whatever the industry gives you... just realize that it's not worth punishing yourself in pursuit of the 'perfect' phone.

Time for GPUs to not become power hogs in a day and age where we should be heading towards energy efficiency to consume less electricity overall and deliver more performance. Instead, more performance needs more power but hopefully AMD continues this trend [of needing less power and delivering more performance] with RDNA3.

depends on the use-case, but 6 cores are enough for most things nowadays and will be for quite a few years.

You can't say that unversally. That also depends on the generation of the CPU

I suppose there are no good solutions here. Are you more comfortable with Apple having your data instead of Google? That's pretty much the only difference realistically speaking... Besides, there's a good chance that Google already has your data so you'd kind of be willingly sharing it with another giant corporation 🙂

Your only non-negotiable problem is the battery requirement.

An example I have a Samsung S3 Frontier has lasted me 4 years now and still going strong. Battery only lasts about 40-48hrs per charge but I have found it worth the purchase. Battery has not degraded any that I have noticed.

On battery life, I'll put it this way: I have an Apple Watch Series 5. It's only now, after three years of heavy use (we're talking 45-60 minute workouts three times a week, loads of Gmail alerts, etc.), that I'm noticing the battery running uncomfortably low on occasion. Someone with more moderate use could probably get another year or two more. If that's still too short I'll understand — I just think it's important to note that even high-powered watches like the Apple Watch or Galaxy Watch can still last a good while.

The Garmin watch is what your daughter will want for the features you're looking at. Both devices have solid sleep tracking, but the Withings model is basically a conventional watch with some nice health features tacked on; it won't help much if there's an incoming text, and you certainly can't use it for meaningful notifications or music.

I have two Synology NAS. Both are using Seagate IronWolf 5400rpm drives. Can't hear a thing, and both are on a shelf about 4 feet away from my bed.
One NAS is a dedicated Plex server, and it has 2x 6TB drives.
The other is dedicated to family photo backups, and it has 2x 2TB drives.

I've had the 2TB drives for about 4 years now.
The 6TB drives will be 2 years in February.

Nah, this isn't some sinister conspiracy on Google's part. Don't let frustration cloud your judgment; sometimes, bad things just happen.

Most likely, this either reflects battery wear from three years of use (the chip may have to throttle to avoid spontaneous shutdowns) or simply some OS hiccup that's affecting everything. Have you tried a factory reset to see if that helps?

Kc7vwc reacted to LIGISTX in I need help killing my iphone battery
You realize apple only charges 49 bucks for a battery replacement on that phone, right?

I would advise instead of being wasteful and using electricity strictly to destroy something, next time let it be what it is, and when the battery is to low to be useful for you, spend a few bucks to get it replaced. Batteries drop off quickly in the beginning, but the time it takes for a phone to naturally go from ~90% to 80% is YEARS. My Xs dropped down to low 90’s within about 2 years, and now I’m at 83%, and I have used my phone a lot more in the more recent years (I got this phone day 1 launch).

I understand not wanting to have a battery that doesn’t hold much charge, but this is just wasteful for the sake of being wasteful.

Kc7vwc got a reaction from Lurking in What are the chances of Pixel 6a and Nothing phone (1) being good
    This is flat untrue.
The physical connector is type-c, but the capability of the USB standard going through that connector is always innovating.
There's already been 3+ updates to USB3 since the type-c port was implemented. And it's backwards compatible when needed. My last Motorola was USB-C, but wired for the USB2.x standard.
Yes the new naming is wonky, but the innovation can't be denied.

HDMI - same physical connector, huge innovation since launch.
Ethernet RJ45. Same connector, orders of magnitude better speed, bandwidth & dependability.
    PCI Express.
    Displayport.
Hell, look at USB-A! It's the single port that has been here since the beginning of USB. Yet that same port is fully backwards compatible, and still contains all the current tech.

Kc7vwc reacted to venomtail in What are the chances of Pixel 6a and Nothing phone (1) being good
Yea no dude. The "nO iNnOvAtIoN" argument is weak and overused. Apple has had 11 years to innovate on a new connector but they haven't. Why? Because the money cash cow that is licensing out the lightning port is just too much for Apple to pass up. Apple itself is making the market worse and stifling innovation because of pure greed. There's a reason why all the wall plugs in your house are of one design.

And all connectors are weak. Drop id on the floor while plugged in and just about all of them will break.

Your phone is probably bugging out. You are probably in more trouble with the neighbors that are going to pick fights with you for jamming their network. Please rethink this, if you are really scared, factory reset your phone.
