  1. One's discontinued so it's discounted. Get the savings.
  2. What drive is it? Do you know what failed? If it's external there's a good chance that there's also a USB connection as well as the firewire. Even so, opening up the case will give you a plain sata drive. Try it bare in a system. If the drive is gone, there are tools that can get you a recovery.
  3. This pissing contest is idiotic and really shows how infantile both countries are. On top of that it also shows how out of touch the American movers and shakers are with reality. 50 years ago these sorts of embargoes had teeth. Not any more. Where do AMD and NVidia, both fabless, get their chips made? TSMC. The largest third party chipmaker in the world. Does anyone remember what the T stands for? Yep. Taiwan. You know, the Chinese "protectorate" just off the coast of China. So yeah, don't "sell" to the very people that are making the chips. Guess where several Intel fabs are? Yep. There too. Indonesia is close by as well. It's a joke. Told by clowns.
  4. Almost everyone in this thread is obsessed with the gpu and cpu as if that's where this "proofing" is going to happen. It's the least problematical part of futureproofing anything. None of the current state of processors or gpu's will be obsolete in 5 years. Things are not progressing that fast. Buuuut, new, faster protocols will be available that you won't have. NVMe anyone? BIOS changes that will allow larger drives. More connectivity. Better networking. O/S that will not work with your current system. Video connectivity. It's endless and unstoppable. You can't "futureproof" any of that. It's pointless to try and spending a lot of money trying to is a mugs game.
  5. Nice Podcast. Oh well. Both the sync and Luke's mike. I think that Luke needs to go over to Linus' seat. When he stood up or leaned forward the sound drastically improved. Austin was great. He's a great sub for Linus. Well prepared and brings the energy. Hopefully you'll do something with him soon again.
  6. This is a joke right? Do all of you know that both Gigabyte and ASUS sub out their manufacturing to other vendors, especially their high end, low volume boards? Yeah, the vaunted "quality" boards are probably made by Foxconn. Both brands. While the architecture of each is different, the actual manufacturing is identical. Quality is job one, you know!
  7. Try to update the driver for the (Atheros) wireless card with the driver from here . Older versions of this driver are apparently notorious for being highly unstable.
  8. The other thing is "underpowered". Not all watts are the same. A high quality "underpowered" unit is far superior to a cheap "acceptable" power unit. Read the reviews that JonnyGURU does. All those tests mean something. Power stability is far more important than pure output. That's why it pays to put up the money for a quality unit and why people put such faith in things like Japanese caps. Component quality and circuit topology play an important part in why one psu is better than another. So if you have a Seasonic based 550W unit vs a cheap 750W unit and your gpu says you need a 600W unit, I wouldn't worry and keep the 550W. It'll do you better in the long run than the cheap unit ever could.
  9. A good looking non traditional colour case is difficult without it looking garish. I think my 230T in Rebel orange works but that's rare.

  11. You have to look at the total system. If you're pairing old components against premium new there might be some problems particularly on the power side of things. Something like a Titan X needs good power, from both the psu and the m/bd and bandwidth. The older the board the less likely that it will go well. So to go into the real world, a good, reasonably aggressive new card like the 280 or 280x might have issues with an older board that might be only running PCI 2.0 because the cpu can't handle more. Until you actually try it, you won't know for sure.
  12. There's no comparison. XP 64 is crap. XP 32 is memory bound to less than 4 gb of memory. Win 7 64 is the only way to go. As soon as I typed that I had a thought... it hurt. What drivers do you have. These are laptops. If all you have is XP drivers you have no choice. XP only.
  13. Damn it! I know I shouldn't post when I'm tired. I knew that. I have no idea why I conflated the two. Anyway, the main point still stands, the Be Quiet! fan is superior to the CoolerMaster fan. Not hugely, but it is better. Now, if you go up in class to the Dark Rock or Noctua class fans then that's a home run. Those fans blow everything else out of the water.
  14. CFM's only mean that the fan is louder. Both Noctua and Be Quiet! have the engineering down where a slow fan can cool as well as or better than a higher rpm fan.
  15. Check your clearances. Bigger is not better if it doesn't fit. The Be Quiets have a tendency to overhang the dimm slots.
  16. No. There's far better for the money and there's even better for less money. The G2 for instance.
  17. EVGA G2 units are what you need. Forget everything else. Price to performance is unbelievable.
  18. It'll be tight. If worst comes to worst just put the fan on the other side in a pull config. That way you'll have clearance for the ram. What ram are you using? Does it have tall spreaders? On my ATX board I lost two dim slots but I have Corsair Dom Plats which are huge. Shorter, more compact modules would work just fine.
  19. I've seen it for better at Canada Computes. $129.99. Reds for as low as $119.99. Quite frankly tho, I'd stay away from the K70. For the price it's just too flakey. Bad LEDs, simply dying yadda, yadda, yadda. Looks and feature wise it's a killer kb, but the QC is terrible for the price.
  20. No, you're using the wrong cable. The CPU cable should be a 2+4 connector and it should be labeled CPU and plugged into that socket. It will be beside the 24 pin socket on the PSU. There are 4 PCI cables which are 3+1 connectors and should be labeled PCI.
  21. Icon Derelict. Probably a wagon. It's all about the character. Be unique!
  22. Check your cable connections to the m/bd. You could have dislodged the power button from the case to the board.
  23. Just think how fast we could go through the city if we didn't have to stop at all those intersections! It would be so convenient. There's a reason why the architecture is designed the way it is. The ATX m/bd has been refined over generations. It's pretty damn good.
  24. I would invest in a good UPS before the new unit comes back. And make sure you get a UPS, not just a surge protector.
