  1. Hi, I have an AMD PRO 5965WX. It’s a long story, but I originally purchased an Asus WRX80 Creator 2.0 but soon after got a free Gigabyte WRX80-SU8-IMI. I can’t return either motherboard. Does anyone know which one is a better motherboard to use and which one to sell on eBay slight_smile: light_smile  I already have 256GB (8x32gb) DDR4 3200Mhz ECC ram. I plan to run Proxmox and Unraid on this system. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hey David!  The Seasonic Focus PX-850 is a quality PSU and should do just fine for the 3090.  It does like to spike a bit in power but there are plenty of people running 3090 with an 850w.
Check this one out, its quite an interesting video.  I know its the 4090 but it shows how good and overspec quality PSU's actually are.

Hi, thanks for the quick response and the link to the Linus video.   This really puts my worries at ease 🙂

  3. Hi, about two years ago I built my parents a desktop with an AMD 5900X and an MSI Ventus 3x RTX 3080 TI with a Seasonic Focus PX-850.   I want to swap the video card it out with an MSI GAMING TRIO RTX 3090.   The RTX 3090 was my old card before I upgraded to the RTX 4090.   My dad plays Microsoft Flight Simulator a lot and read that the increased VRAM and bus size can increase the performance in that type of game at 4k.    The Seasonic website says I need a 1000w PSU, but the specs say it's only an increase of 30 watts of power over the RTX 3080 TI.  The MSI website recommends 750W.    Can I get buy with my current PSU, or is it safer to just upgrade to a 1000W?   Any advice would be greatly appreciated!   Thank you in advance.

  4. Hi, I am considering getting the WD Ultrastar DC SN640 server NVMe drive for my desktop as data.   They are considerably cheaper than the TLC NVMe drives of the same size ($250 for a 3.8tb or $399 for a 7.8TB new).   I think all you need to get is a m.2 to U2 adapter.   I was wondering if it makes sense or if I'm missing something obvious about why people don't buy them for consumer use.   Can Windows or Linux automatically detect them easily?   I know they will probably be slower than the customer versions, but I would just use it as storage and not for my apps.   Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Be careful, I had terrible issues with that exact CableMod one on my RTX 4080, although mine is a FE. The screen would randomly go black, the fan ramp up to 100%, but everything else keeps working in the background and I had to hard reset the PC to stop it. I've since swapped back to the Nvidia one and it's been solid since.

    Edit:

To directly answer the question the cable should be of sufficient quality wire to handle the full power of the RTX 4090 on just 3 plugs as I've seen some companies (Corsair) even just doing 2x 8 pins for 600w cables and people having no issues provided the PSU is capable of driving the power.

Ok, thanks.   I think I'll return it and eventually putting that money to a PCIE 5.0 ATX 3.0 that has a 12VHPWR port.   I don't risk damaging my card.

  6. When I bought my LG 37.5” 21:9 QHD+ UltraWide from B&H Photo a few years back, they said they usually sell the "B" versions to OEMs and are a little higher quality.    I don't know if they told me the truth, but I haven't had any issues with my "B" model.  If they sell them cheaper to OEMs, I would think they would use a little less quality parts, but I don't know.   They say it's the same panel.   I have the same question as you. 🙂

  7. Hi, I have a MSI RTX 4090 GAMING X TRIO 24G and a Seasonic FOCUS 1000W power supply.   The graphics card has a 12VHPWR to 3x 8-pin PSU plug adapter.   I wanted to clean up my case and bought a Cable Mod 12VHPWR cable that connects directly to the PSU.    I bought the 3x 8-pin version.   They also sell a 4x 8-pin version.   I already bought the 3x 8-pin version, but does it make sense to get the 4x 8-pin version of the cable?   Would it increase either safety or performance?   Also, is it a good idea to use this after-market cable?   Thanks!

So reliability not speed.  In windows you just make restore points.  Also there’s OneDrive.you can also have a “back it up every 24hs thing setup so you don’t even have to think about it.  Iirc the standard is 3 sets of backups. One on the drive, one with you but not in the machine, and one off site (so likely some sort of cloud thing these days). Backup one seems to be the nvme.  Backup 2 could be a usb stick and backup 3 could be cloud.  Chances of failure get statistically very very small when you do it that way.  It depends on how important and unrecreatable the data is though.

Thanks for the suggestions.   I should have clarified how I back up my OS drive.   I use Acronis True Image (or whatever it's called now).    After it's saved to a local disk, it automatically clones the image to my UnRaid server.  I have been using this process for years and have been happy with it.   It's really simple to restore the OS if I need to. I'm not a big fan of Windows restore points.    I have it not worked in the past when I really needed it to.

Also, I forgot to mention I have a dual boot with a Ubuntu partition, so Acronis takes care of the whole OS drive in one backup.   It also allows me to restore specific partitions in case I just need one OS reverted back on a certain day.

I was just looking for a cheap big scratch disk for the initial backup and data I want to keep locally.   I just use OneDrive for my documents and an extra copy location of important photos so I can access them on multiple machines.

    Thanks again,

  9. Hi, I'm considering upgrading to a new LSI card and purchasing larger hard drives for my UnRAID server.   I believe two of my current drives might be going bad.   I want to go down from eight 8GB drives to no more than six 12GB or 14GB hard drives.     I currently have the 9207-8i, which has eight 6 Gb/s SATA + SAS total connections.   I have been looking at the LSI-9300-8i, which has the same connections but at 12 Gb/s.   I am also considering purchasing SAS drives instead of SATA but was concerned about the noise.

Is there a significant noise difference between a 7200RPM SATA drive vs a 7200RPM 12 Gb/s SAS drive?   I read that SAS drives running at 1500RPM are read loud for home use, but I could find much information on the noise for a 7200RPM SAS drive.   Also, if SAS drives make sense does it matter between Seagate or Western Digital?   Currently, new SAS drives appear a little cheaper than SATA.

I hope this makes sense.   Thanks as always for any suggestions!

PS I don't know if I should mention I have a few SSD drives for the UnRaid cache.

I'll suggest neither and I'll instead do my usual simp of the Teamgroup MP34. ~3,500MB/s read and 2,500MB/s write, DRAM cache, 2,400TBW endurance, and the price is lower than both (at least in the US).

    I've got a pair of MP33's (a 128 and a 256GB) as well as a 4TB MP34 and they've all been perfect so far.

Sorry for the delay.   Thanks for the suggestion.   I'll check the drive out.

  11. Hi, sorry for the delay.   I have been on travel.

Both will be multiple times as fast as that hard drive (as well as a LOT more expensive) the standard pricing for NVMEs seemed to end at 2tb

some dramless drives are OK, because they use system ram instead. The drives I hear about that with though are a lot smaller than 4tb.  What is your use case for this?

Hi, sorry for the delay.   I have been on travel.  I primarily want to use the drive as data storage for nightly backups of my OS drive (Intel 905 480 GB Optane) and temporary downloads folder.   I already have a 2tb Samsung 990 for my games and other apps.   Thanks.

  12. Hi, I'm looking at getting a 4TB SSD to replace an old failing hard drive.  It will mainly be used for data I don't usually use daily and nightly backups of my Intel Optane 480gb OS drive (which is usually about 200gb full) with Acronis True Image, so speed isn't really an issue   I'm looking at either the 4tb Crucial P3 Plus NVMe or the Crucial 4TB MX500.   The P3 is, of course, faster but it is dramless and is QLC and has 800TB TBW, while the MX500 is 3D TLC with 1000TB TBW.   I have a 2TB Samsung 990 for games and VMs.

I read some people say dramless QLC SSDs are perfectly fine while others say stay away from them.   Both drives are similar prices, and I have space in my desktop for either one.   Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

There are two things you can do to get it to have lower power consumption.

    1. Manually underclock and undervolt it until you get to the power target you want.
    2. Manually set the power limits in the BIOS to whatever you want them to be.

You should be able to impose a 65W TDP if you really want to or even lower.

Thanks for the reply.   I'll go through the manual and check the settings.    Will it help to disable some of the cores?

  14. Hi, I am running Unraid with a Z590i motherboard.   Currently, I'm using my old I7-11700K from my desktop that I upgraded.   The TDP is listed at 125W, but it can, of course, spike up.    Is there a way to detune it so it has a lower TDP?   I want to use a smaller CPU fan to make room for other peripherals in my case and use less power.    I have a power meter connected between the wall and PSU, but I couldn't find any settings to lower it that much.

If it's impossible, I will replace it with an i3-10305t which has a TDP of only 35W.

I don't plan to run any VMs.   I have a separate Proxmox server for that.   I use Unraid for my NAS, a couple of docker containers, and Plex.

    Thanks,

    David

  15.  Hi, I'm building a new Unraid server and want to use as low power as I can.   I was looking at getting a i3-10100T or i5-10400t.    Is this CPU power enough, or do I need the regular 65W versions?

    I plan on running:

LSI Controller for 6x 10TB HDDs using breakout cables

3x SSDs connected to the motherboard SATA ports

    1x SFP+ 10GB NIC

    Docker containers:

    Plex

    NextCloud

    PiHole

    No VMs.

I'll be using an Asus Z590i.   I know it's overkill for a I3, but I was able to get a really good deal on it 🙂

Thanks for any suggestions on this CPU and if the 25-35W version of the 10th gen I3 or I5 can handle this configuration.   I prefer the I3 if these CPUs are sufficient since it's $35 cheaper.

  16. Hi, I have a Gigabyte X570 Aorus Master motherboard with a 5950X CPU.   I want to install a dual SFP+ network card in the bottom slot.   It is a PCIe 2.0x8 device.   The bottom two slots of the motherboard is listed as:

    Integrated in the Chipset (PCIEX4/PCIEX1):

        1 x PCI Express x16 slot, supporting PCIe 4.0/3.0 and running at x4 (PCIEX4)
        1 x PCI Express x1 slot, supporting PCIe 4.0/3.0

Is it possible to install this PCIE 2.0x8 network card in the x16 slot running at PCIe 4.0x4?   Thanks for any help!

  17. Hi, I hope this is the correct sub forum to ask this question.    I am trying to create a ZFS pool with 3 drives.   I would like to use 2 drives and have the third one as a parity.   When I try to create the zpool it just stripes all three drives.

    I am using this command:

     zpool create -f -m /mnt/zstorage zstorage raidz /dev/nvme1n1p1 /dev/nvme0n1p1 /dev/nvme2n1p1

    I also tried 'raidz1'

and when I do a 'zpool list' I get this outut

NAME SIZE ALLOC FREE CKPOINT EXPANDSZ FRAG CAP DEDUP HEALTH ALTROOT
    zstorage 5.45T 226K 5.45T - - 0% 0% 1.00x ONLINE -

If anyone can tell me what I am doing wrong that would be very helpful.  Thank you!
