  1. Hey guys, So I have been using my current laptop since 2012. It is a Lenovo G570-4334. I have repaired it so many times it is now held together with Super Glue and Epoxy. For example, the screen hinges broke. Initially I was able to fix it. Then that fix failed when the hinge mount on the chassis broke off. So I epoxied it to the chassis and it was good. Then the hinge mounts stripped so the screws dont stay.....I epoxied the screws and hinges together. Then the fan grill broke off and the frame near it cracked. Super-glue fixed that. I had been taking it apart and putting it back together so much nearly all the screw holes were stripped. Also it seemed that every time lately, 1 or 2 screws would go missing even when putting them all in a magnetic container. The thermal paste is Noctua NH-1. I upgraded the RAM to 8GB Crucial DDR3-1600 CAS-9. The chassis is not being opened any more outside of the doors on the underside for RAM and CPU. The chassis has been epoxied together with an extra sealant on the outside of super glue by Gorrilla Glue. As you can probably tell, this laptop has been in service for a while and unfortunately has seen some dangerous times. It usually rides in my backpack at work and is pulled out to update service tickets in the field or to assist with Router and Switch maintenance. The specs are a Sandybridge Core i3 23xx something I think. 8GB Dual Channel DDR3 1600. 1x 120GB Kingston HyperX 3K SSD. It runs Linux as Windows sucks hard on this machine at this point. Yes I tried 10 on here and NO,,,,,Hell No. So, I am here asking for assistance as I have been looking through my options and am going insane. The requirements I have are simple but sound. No, this is not a gaming computer. I do not game on a laptop if I can help it. I would be fine if it could game at the same time but I primarily watch streaming video, read E-Books, maybe Blender Modeling but also use for work in the field. I use Linux so keep in mind that I will most likely be wiping that virus of an OS (windows 10) off my machine. It needs to be friendly to Linux aka works OOTB with all hardware BT/Wifi etc Must be charged over USB-C/Thunderbolt - I am sick and tired of replacing the barrel port or replacing barrel dongle power bricks. USB C is supposed to have a longer life and stronger port. Should be 15.6" or smaller. At the smallest of 13". 13 or 14" is preferred but 15.6" is acceptable. Touchscreen is optional (not preferred) but if it is touchscreen, it needs to be able to fold over like a tablet so Im not poking at a screen like an idiot but instead using it like a tablet before I flip it back over and use the laptop like normal. I Prefer a Matte screen so I dont have to deal with glare from the sun at work. 1080p or higher -- at Most 1440p. NO NVIDIA graphics - Nvidia's drivers on Linux Suck hard. And when they dont, they are a beotch to install and break as soon as you update the kernel. If dedicated graphics are in it, they must be Intel or AMD (preferably of the Vega series aka Intel's Vega M iGPU series or a Ryzen 7 series or RX Polaris chip like the 580.) Intel or AMD - If AMD - Ryzen 2700U/2500U with Vega 10/Vega 8. If Intel - UHD 620/HD620 or Vega M (ex: Intel Core i7-8809G) Wireless AC Bluetooth 4.1 or higher at minimum 8GB of RAM. Preferably 16GB. Ability to upgrade RAM would be ideal. SSD - m.2 nvme is preferable. DVDRW - not necessary Not heavy - this sucker is riding in my backpack with all my tools. I dont need any additional weight if I can help it. Sturdy/Durable materials able to take it and keep ticking. Max price ~$1800. Newegg. I use my Store card. I do not have an Amazon card at this time. So please keep it to Newegg. i have 12 months 0% APR on every purchase over $500. I have not had any issues with Newegg since I started using them in 2008. ***I would like to clarify this: I am not specifically looking for a 2-in-1 as I am less likely to use it as a tablet. I am also not specifically looking for a Kaby Lake-G. I am however specifically looking for USB-C Charging. I would like to be able to find one with a Ryzen chip like the 2700U. Or, an Intel 8th gen chip. Based on what I can find, Ryzen 2700U Vega10 is better than Kaby Lake-G Vega M. I am less likely to use touch screen than most people seem to think. I have never need to before and didnt really desire the option. The way I see it, if I want touch pad stuff, Ill get a WACOM writing pad. *** If it has the ability to have a WWAN card added for mobile computing, that would be nice to have so I dont have to tether my phone. But again, not a requirement. My laptop has been running into issues more and more as time goes on and I fear that it will break soon in a way that I can not solve at the office. I am Lenovo, Dell, HP certified for computers. HP has been on my watch list but as long as HP stays away from joining the FWUpdate group for Linux firmware updates (Dell and Lenovo are part of that group) then HP unfortunately is not in the running. FWUpdate allows you to upgrade the firmware from the Linux OS automatically like you are installing software packages. No more downloading either an ISO or booting to a Windows USB or partition just to install a BIOS update or something like that. I do like to Blender render from time to time. Here are a couple of examples of things I have made on that laptop over time. As you can see, I make the most of what I have. When I do game on this old laptop, I am playing games like Breach & Clear, Company of Heroes 1 & 2, and other top down RTS games like Warzone 2100. Not super demanding but they work. Hence my request of it being Vega graphics or at the least AMD RX Polaris series like a 580. Not simply because of gaming but also because I can use it for Blender Rendering. Can you imagine making the stuff I have with 5000 samples on a i3-Sandybridge chip? It takes HOURs to render.
  2. there are several AV tools on Linux that will scan a Windows partition for viruses. As previously mentioned: ClamAV Also available on Windows and MacOS. Other options: Sophos Antivirus for Linux - Detects, Blocks and removes Windows, Mac and Android malware. Works with Web Servers, NFS servers, FTP servers or desktop Linux. Really any Linux works just fine. Current supported platforms include: Amazon Linux, CentOS, Debian, Mint, Oracle, Red Hat, SUSE, TurboLinux and Ubuntu. ckrootki / rkhunter Lynis ISPProtect Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Linux/Endpoint Security for Linux Avast Security Suite for Linux ESET File Security for Linux / FreeBSD Bitdefender for Linux
  3. Fedora is a good choice too. If you really like something interesting, try Fedora 29 SilverBlue Beta. Or Fedora 28 Silverblue (for a released version). Silverblue is a renamed Atomic Workstation. It uses OSTree for the OS and updates. All software is either Layered, Flatpaks or Docker containers. You can also install and use Snap packages. t is interesting to point out that Linus Torvalds does not use Ubuntu or Mint. IIRC, it is Fedora that he uses.
  4. a Linux server distro for one. (usually $0). Then get a used 100GbE card, the inifiniBand cable and a switch that can handle it.
  5. I completely agree with your statement about running this on Linux instead of Windows. RedHat has had this since I believe 2013 at least? https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/7/html/networking_guide/ch-configure_infiniband_and_rdma_networks And even if Linus went with Mellanox, the least he could have done is run it on their Linux Distro OpenFabrics Enterprise Distribution with built in RDMA. Or, he could have taken example from Mellanox's Linux Switch which runs InfiniBand as well. I know Linus is just serving the masses with running Windows and such but when he gets into the technical stuff like this, he really should switch to the platform using it by and large. If he has to, bring Wendell in to demo it off. I am sure no one would blame him and Wendell really brings all the "techs to the yard" as it were ^_^.
  6. Gsync can suck on a Popsicle for all I care about that tech. OpenSource is the way I play.
  7. I am looking to treat myself for my upcoming 32nd b-day. I shop on newegg as I have a store card with them so that is where I want to get my parts. My current rig is: CPU: Intel i7-4770k CPU-Cooler: Coolermaster Hyper N520 Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD3H RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix 1600Mhz GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD Dual-X 7970 Boost (aka Ghz) 3GB Sound card: Soundblaster X-Fi Titanium PCIe Chassis: Corsair Graphite 600T PSU: Corsair HX750 Gold Monitor: Hanns-G HZ281 27.5" 1920x1200 Drives: DVDRW 3 x SSD 2 x HDD 1 x External HDD Keyboard: Coolermaster StormTrigger (CherryMX Blue) Mouse: Logitech G502 Proteus I am looking to upgrade my GPU, Monitor and CPU cooler. For resolution, I want 1440p High-refresh, low response time. IPS Prefer Matte display GPU should be able to push games well on it. I play Escape From Tarkov, Battlebit, Ylands, Neverwinter, Elderscrolls Online, Black Desert Online, Star Citizen, S.T.A.L.K.E.R series and STALKER Online, and many other titles to give you an idea. I also dabble in Arma from time to time if I get the urge. I feel like I probably should get a Noctua NH-D14 or NH-D15, which ever is compatible with AM4 as I want to eventually switch. But I am willing to consider a GOOD, RELIABLE AIO cooler. NOT a Corsair H100i as I already had one crap out on me. I dont want to spend bookoos of cash if I dont have to so please try to keep the parts as close to MSRP as possible. I have been happy with AMD so far (since 2012) GPU wise. But, I suppose I am willing to give team green a try even though I DESTEST the GPP crap that is going on and some of their other business practices.
  8. I meant Zen. Zen is the Architecture of the AMD Ryzen platform. Hence Ryzen is made up of Ry and Zen. Second generation Zen cores are referred to as Zen 2. And so on. If Ryzen passthrough is a pain, I will do Threadripper but according to Wendell, it is not.
  9. Nope. Purchased on 2/14/2018. Too late to return. All I can do is replace. It is new, unopened if I can find someone who wants to buy it Ill do it that way I guess. One way or another I am switching one of my machines to Zen. Either my server (at this point not likely) or this desktop (more likely ( 1700X/2700X)) Where I will most likely run KVM/GPU passthrough setup.
  10. neither was the transcoding being done on my current APU's CPU. I was using the hardware transcoding of the iGPU on the APU. I use the VAAPI/VDPAU library with Emby for transcoding. And I plan to switch to OpenMAX if I can use the CPU I already own (2400g).
  11. Well, the SSD cache is for the transcoding. And how is a G4560 supposed to handle the load of 5-6 machines pulling from the server at the same time? not all of them are transcoding of course. The server handles the entire household. All the TVs and computers connect to it. I don't believe a dual core chip can handle that load. I have considered switching to a Ryzen 5 1600 or 1400 chip and mATX setup. But I chose the 2400G as it has 4 cores and 8 threads versus the A8-3850's 4 cores / 4 threads. It also has the Vega 11 iGPU on it. Which should, once Kernel 4.17 drops work wonders since AMD's transcoding methods have been shown to be able to handle 4 or more streams simultaneously.
  12. I bought a Ryzen 5 2400G to use for upgrading my aging ECS FM1 Socket AMD A8-3850 based media server. I want to make sure that my new CPU will work with Kernel 4.15 prior to purchasing the motherboard and RAM. Then, I will need advice on which motherboard has the best support for Linux and the Ryzen 5 2400G OOTB. I am kinda on the fence about selling the 2400G and buying a Synology NAS or going Intel (very expensive option), or just finishing the build. The server will be mainly headless. The OS is currently a toss up between Fedora 27/28 server and FreeNAS (depending of course on which has better support for the chip). I prefer team Red for my Chips whenever possible. Ive been using the current board and processor since 2011 almost nonstop as a media server. I need the transcoding power too. I plan to leverage any m.2 drives as caching drives. If I can get a mITX board, and the APU works, Ill have an open PCIe slot for either a PCIe Tuner card or an expansion RAID/SAS card (though I prefer soft-RAID or ZFS-RAID).
  13. Wow, in Australia, you are screwed. Just get a decent pair of headphones and snag a modmic.
  14. I like Avast and MBam but on business machines, I usually recommend ESET NOD32 or their SMART version.
  15. still waiting for RockBand to come to PC so I can have fun without a console. i would play with RockSmith if my guitar did not require over $300 of repair work.
  16. I second the Headphones and Modmic 4.0 Uni-directional. I am currently rocking a pair of Samson SR850s with a Modmic 4.0 Uni-Directional mic attached. It works wonders. Great audio and mic while at the same time, if someone wants to ask me a question locally (same room) I can hear them and respond as the Samson SR850s are Semi-Open backed headphones. Cost a good deal less than the "good" Gaming headsets. The SR850s were ~$35 and the Modmic was ~$40.
  17. So, I have had my CM Storm Trigger Mechanical keyboard with cherryMx Blues for a couple years and have never been able to figure out how to setup TS3 to use the M-keys like TS3 can use G-Keys on a Logitech keyboard. Anyone have a good solution for this? I have also tried to do this with a Logitech G600 mouse. I see function scripts and such for the G600 but nowhere in the LGS software to actually put the script. I play alot of Arma 3 (almost 1k hours so far) and use TS3 combined with mods like TFAR or ACRE2. Since those mods usually require you to have PTT enabled on TS3, there are 2 different buttons used for in-game comms. PTT through TS3 is used for the direct chat and the CapsLock (standard VON PTT for Arma 3) is used for Radio comms. Ideally, I would have either an M-key on the keyboard or one of the G-number buttons on the G600 for the TS3 PTT but I can not figure out a good, reliable way of doing this. I am aware I can keybind to the M-key or G-key but that requires selecting a button on the keyboard that will never be used by games or mods. I have been currently using the ScrollLock key but that tends to cause games to crash when activating PTT to talk in TS3 when a game is loading or in Arma 3, when joining a server and the server is loading. In Arma 3, i could use the Y or U key but then I run into the issue where if I am logged into a server as Admin, the Admin menu is often loaded with Y or U.
  18. It is not pay to win. Everything you can buy with real currency is just cosmetic with maxed out specs. You can get the same gun and upgrade it yourself. It just wont have the same color scheme.
  19. I take it he never played STALKER then? And how long ago was it that he played anyway? Ive been playing since the Closed Beta. Seems fine to me and the graphics are just fine. I have had no issues with the "tedious" mechanics or bugs.
  20. Are there any LTT Survarium players here?
  21. I would personally recommend Fedora 23 Workstation. That is what I run. I use LibreOffice for Office Blender for CAD/Modeling Atom for Coding (Github Atom) Streamtuner2 for Spotify type stuff Here is a list of Inno alternatives: INNO ALT
  22. I take it you can't be bothered to remember or read your previous posts. Intel is commonly used for Enthusiast grade builds. Not Budget. That is traditionally AMD's turf.
  23. ummm. you don't have to overclock an 860K to get great performance. I only brought it up because you mentioned that he should grab the 4690K so that in the future he can OC it for more performance. He wants to save money and still get good performance.
  24. Intel is still a better option. An AMD CPU by comparison is around $400 for the CPU, Motherboard and Cooler. The 8320 is capable of gaming and recording/streaming and should do me well. What should I go with? FX 8000 series (6 cores) or an 6000 series Actually, the AMd Athlon X4 860K is the better option. He can still OC the hell out of that chip with decent cooling. Have fun dong that with the Intel chip on stock cooling.
