also, have you inspected the mains cable for any damage and tried a different one. the psu isn’t truly “on” until minimally the paper clip test is performed.

this is wholeheartedly agree with. if your mains cable is damaged CUT THE CONNECTORS AWAY for the safety of others and throw them in the trash.

Just saw this, if you are getting an RTX 3070 please upgrade to at least a quality 850w unit like a Corsair RM850x, especially with your CPU

its ok for low end systems, wouldn't in good faith recommend it for any decent mid range and above. it may work fine but generally go for one with good reviews, good warranty policy etc.

I'm assuming you've never seen beater PSUs shooting sparks before

Had a relative's pc running on a cheap no name psu. power surge, no power on after. only parts that made it was hdd and cpu, motherboard 0 response on another psu, ram, unable to post on known good systems. So yes. poor power supplies with little no protection can take parts out with it.

I believe the D15S will still result in the ram rgb being blocked, a single fan would be more than enough for the 5700x. That is just the reality of using a large air cooler.

B550 boards should all be ryzen 5000 ready, but you could easily save alot of money by going with an MSI B550-A PRO (about 60 Euro). This money can be put to trying to fit a higher end CPU like the Ryzen 5700x in which is about 80 Euro more.

If you want to do it 1 button, KVM Switch is your answer. But one that can preserve the 165Hz at 1440p is going to be pricey. I'd just run 2 DP cables from the gpu to monitors and 2 more HDMI cables from your macbook pro with im assuming adapters you already have to your monitors. Switch both monitors inputs as needed, I believe some dell monitors allow you to set custom settings where pressing a button switches the input immediately to a preselected one instead of going through the menu.

Keyboard Mouse Situation can be solved with a USB Switch.

I'd put a simple 5 port switch to split the 1 ethernet cable into 2 and plug them directly in to save the hassle.

Yup I second that, Adobe far favors Nvidia for GPU acceleration. Honestly most programs do. For non gaming applications there are very little situations where I would recommend an AMD card over Nvidia

Adobe programs really like Nvidia in lots of GPU acceleration workloads, so I wouldn't really get an AMD card for that, CUDA is just so widely used instead of OpenGL.

Depends, More RAM allows for more caching and faster scrubbing through complex Ae Sequences. People who use Ae heavily can never have enough ram

Game developers have never properly developed game engines to work well with SLI as the setups aren't very efficient. The cycle continues, little people run even dual top end GPU SLI Setups as little games support it, and eventually GPU makers realise it isn't worth investing so much in a technology not many are using.

As I run Unraid instead of Freenas, Can't say much on what to do on the software side.

Motherboard and CPU doesn't support ECC, just use your old ram.

Freenas does software raid, so don't worry about motherboard hardware raid (do not set it up there, that i know)

Do NOT cheap out on your sata controller. Used Server HBAs don't cost much. I personally use an LSI SAS 9211-8i flashed to IT Mode, Dell H310 is the same thing just Dell branded. Flashing it to IT Mode doesn't take much time or effort, took me about 15mins total including research on how to do it.

The LSI 9211-8i is a SAS card so you will need to pick up a pair of SAS-4xSATA breakout cables which will only cost a couple bucks each.

This will effectively just give you 8 extra sata ports passed through cleanly when in IT mode.

I'm not particularly clear with the model you attached, but below is what I'd recommend
    https://www.amazon.de/-/en/KALEA-INFORMATIQUE-Controller-2-0-SATA-Technology-Microsoft/dp/B01H56NNBE/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=lsi+9211-8i&qid=1650222694&sprefix=LSI+9211%2Caps%2C244&sr=8-3

Flashing it to IT mode is pretty simple, guides for how to do it on an LSI 9211-8i are abundant, below is one.

ECC is nice, I run it, but you can’t use ECC with that mobo or CPU… so if you decided that was worth while to you (it’s not required), you would need to step up to a xeon and server mobo.

Correct, you can’t add storage once the ZFS array is built (unless you add more vdevs or replace drives 1 at a time with larger drives).

Motherboard RAID support doesn’t matter at all since it will all be handled by Freenas ZFS. Don’t set up any RAID on the mobo.

Do more research. Go on the truenas forum and read, read a lot.

Don’t use a jank sata card. Get a used sever hba. I have mine listed in my sig, it’s a SAS card. SAS can break out to SATA. You will need to make sure the card is in IT mode so it transparently passes the drives through to Freenas - you don’t want the RAID card doing ANYTHING, IT mode makes it work how you want it to.

This one already is in IT mode looks like.

Ram is good, PSU is good.

Though since you are doing a new build I usually like to get all the bother of setting up put away at one go, try to squeeze in at least a 500gb NVMe boot drive if you can. Otherwise it'd be a pain to install an M.2 drive especially on your chosen motherboard, as I see that one of the M.2 slots is directly below the CPU socket. The large air cooler (NH-D15) will cover it and you'd likely have to remove the cooler in order to install the drive.

berberries got a reaction from Nvidix in -
    1. Missed out storage (reusing old storage perhaps?)
    2. NH-D15 unless you are getting it for absolute silence in your machine, pretty overkill. stock cooler will do for a 5600x. But if it's there to go for silence, carry on.
    3. Try to bump your ram up to a 3600MHz kit from your current 3200MHz kit if you can. Cost difference shouldn't be much, in my opinion worth the few % gains in performance
    4. I'd overspec the PSU to maybe an 850w model if possible, straight power 11 is a pretty good unit.

Otherwise, pretty nice build overall. Happy building!

yup it's about balancing the pros and cons of whether its worth spending the cash on. In that case I'd advise you look for a Late 2018 model, most are going for $500-600 (why) but i see some i3 models on auction on ebay for $300 or so with only a couple hours left. Maybe you could take a crack at that. a Late 2018 model will probably get you a few more years of support compared to a late 2014 model.
