Just call it a draw, the 390 pulls ahead more in performance but the 970 has Nvidia features.
    I'd say this.
390: More performance, more VRAM, better in higher res.
    970: Nvidia features, Power Consumption.

    @spwath

    Couple of questions for you:

    1. As dumb as it sounds, is you cpu block in the loop the right way around? even after adding a gpu block.

    2. Did you add and more rads to the circut? or anything that may cause any kind of restriction.

    3. Does it still leak if you take the gpu block out of the loop?

I'm gonna get flamed for this, but here it goes.....

Xeons: Pending on the model / version / core count etc, it will perform as good as any of the Intel i series of cpus in most cases. The difference, well, I'm not sure anymore due to some of the later Q2'15 Xeons like the Intel® Xeon® Processor E3-1265L v4 which has on board Iris pro 6300. The only difference I can see is higher memory bandwidth up form 25.6 GB/s to 29.8 GB/s for the Xeons.

i3/5/7: hyperthreading for the i3/7, i5 with out. Lower cost, lower bandwidth cpus compared to the Xeons, not much to say really, pick the socket, mainboard to suit, and correct ram and get building. I would only really look at higher end i3  or K series for the i5/7 (thats my opinion). The onboard is OK, but don't try and game on it, doesn't cope too well.

What you really need to figure out is:
    1. Is it a working station computer, with little gaming on the side?
    2. a gaming rig?
    3. very light gaming, mainly internet surfing, HTPC, etc?
    4. a home or game server?

Options 1 & 4 I would recomend a Xeon over anything else. This is due to more often a higher core/thread count, and higher over all memory bandwidth, and the more likely hood of multithreaded applications running.

And i series for 2 & 3 due to lighter single to dual core or threaded workloads (gaming and trolling on the interwebs).

Truth of the matter is, What ever the cpu you have, it will perform all the tasks you ask it to do. How efficently it does it, is something else.

Using a dedicated PC for hosting online gaming over a dedicated connection.

That way when you can have Zero impact on the gaming for the other users connected to it. Down side is that you require a seperate PC for daily use.

This is not really down anymore since most ISP's run gaming servers and there are companies that will host servers at a monthly cost etc. Was mainly used pre 2004 or earlier, when people had to make thier own servers for gaming, and LAN parties was still a real  local community thing.

5 - Final (For Now) Pictures!

So here's the build as she stands currently, sorry for the jump, since the last set of photos I routed, soldered and joined the pipework, added the temperature probes, made the drive bays (not seen, they're underneath the main platform) and filled the loop!

I will remove the strix sticker, I needed the backing paper and just stuck it wherever temporarily, but didn't remove it before the photo haha

So still quite a bit to do! I will be hoping to engrave some of the wood with a Victorian steam era style, finish some of the 'cosmetic' pipework, polish a few things and add more woodwork to hide the small amount of cable on show! But for now, I'm at uni for the next 9 months.

2 - The Blasted Reservoir Fabrication

This is probably my favourite part of this build, I originally had the idea to make a full-metal brass reservoir, until the 'whole-room-watercooling' conundrum of Linus's left me thinking otherwise. Essentially did the same thing as I was going to, except wrapping the brass around an acrylic tube to stop any corrosion mishaps.

First off, I knew I wanted a domed top on the tank, after having already bought the 90mm OD acrylic tube and the disc to plug one end, I had a limited market on buying brass domes with a radius of 45mm. This actually soon turned out to be NO MARKET WHATSOEVER. So I bought more sheet brass plus a mild steel cannonball, a quick lookup on planishing and metalwork and about 4 trial attempts, blowtorch burns and ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD I started getting what I was after:

That one component probably takes the lions share of time spent on this thing - I don't have a photo until it's actually combined with the other brasswork but getting a complete hemisphere is hard work.... Anyway, after that I tarnished the section of brass I had for the body with the blowtorch and bent that into a tube to give the general shape of my reservoir:

Working on the retaining rings and other flanges:

Before combining them with the main body of the reservoir, cutting down the brass to show the clear acyrilic (I liked the 'leyton jar' look) and soldering and polishing up the metal. Final thing was to add the return tube and various fittings to give the effect I was after:

Overall I'm pretty happy with this part, it was a lot of fun to build (even if at times I just wanted it to end) and it taught me a bunch of skills I never expected to learn! But the results where rewarding, so building your own reservoir: 8/10 would recommend.

That's that for today, love to know what you think so far!

Maxwit44 reacted to Whaler_99 in New Build Log - Whaler Quiets His Work Area... or Green Machine Update... or You Pick
Well, the time has come for changes. As some of you may know from some of my twitter posts and my blog, I have a nice, large desk out in the living area of the basement. Around this desk I have my gaming / folding system along with about 4 other systems I use. Pretty much everything else is stashed away in the crawl space.

The problem has been some of the machines are ageing and make more and more fan noise and my main system, I am running the fans pretty high to get some cool temps. I keep the GPU's in the low 40's and the CPU in the low 50's.

So, in an effort to quiet things up I am attacking this two fold (get it? ).

First, I am moving the gaming/folding system to a new case. I picked up a Thermaltake Core X2. As this sucker comes with native support for 3 x 360 radiators, this will be perfect, along with a 240 in the front. With room for push/pull on my thick rads, I should be able to keep the same temps, or even a little better, and only run the fans at low speeds with that much rad coverage. Yippee!

But, in order to FIT the bloody cube on my desk, I need to move things around, so I am converting all my physical boxes into VM's to run on my unRaid server. If you haven't checked out unRaid, you really should.
Then I can pull out the computers, monitor, KVM, etc. Voila. Space.

So, as things go, I will update this... this build log will cover off some items on folding, watercooling and just in general how to screw everything up. Along the way I will get a mini review of the Core X2 done up (if I don't burn it down in the build process). The other thing pushing this, I noticed some black junk in my res. Probably residue from the rads so yea, need to drain it all, so perfect time to rip everything apart.

    Ahh, fun times....

I chose the Xeon because it was recommended for video editing. i7 doesn't make sense like you said. I might go with skylake, or this. I'm not sure yet.
    I'll change the SSD.

I'm going to be blunt, you're talking out of your ass.

Overclocking does dick-all for performance in 99% of the cases and not everyone can attain a high OC to begin with. It's not "less efficient for tasks like gaming" because it's the same exact thing as an i7 just without the iGPU. It's better for multi-threaded use where you may have several programs open, where an i5 just can't compete. Period. Skylake is marginal performance improvements over Haswell, literally a few percent, or negligible difference.

For a few dollars more, having hyper-threading is a no-brainer. Anything else is either not knowing facts or being delusional. Not to mention the added cost of 1151 boards and DDR4.
